Term 1 Course Guide See inside

Alison Ware moved into the area in July last year, and loves the rural feel of the area. She is so glad she didn't go to Ballarat as she is seeing all the development there. She moved up from Port Arlington into a house that was built in the early 1900’s but was transported up here about 20 years ago. She spent the Covid lockdowns doing extensive renovations

to her house, including installing her life long dream of having an Aga stove. Alison loves looking out over her neighbour’s paddock to the ‘borrowed’ view. She enjoys trying to identify the local bird life, and so far she has identified more than 20 species that visit her home. She was particularly fascinated by the call of the Bronzewing. At this stage she has not had a lot of opportunity to explore all that Haddon has to offer, and this is why she was particularly thrilled to receive the ‘Welcome to Haddon’ pack, as it provides her a starting point to explore some of what the area has to offer. This project was funded by the Golden Plains Shire Council in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative (CASI). The Haddon Community Learning Centre applied for a community grant under this program and were very grateful to be awarded funds to compile “Welcome” packs to be given to new residents in the area. Thank you to the great businesses in the area who provided some lovely vouchers; the Haddon General Store, Michael Unwin Wines, Rustic Edge Café, Haddon Community Learning Centre discount voucher and giveaways and to the many others for their promotional materials. The Community Centre has a few packs in reserve so if we have missed delivering to you, please let them know and we will reserve you one.

Situated on the edge of Ballarat in Smythesdale this rustic café has a variety of delicious savoury and sweet options to satisfy your cravings. At the Rustic Edge Café and takeaway, they have created a clean and relaxed atmosphere with a fully renovated space to

welcome all customers to either dine in, or takeaway. The café is a family owned business by locals who have lived in the town for twenty-five years, and seen the potential that this space can offer their community, the shop has had a complete overhaul. Brand new kitchen area and equipment with a beautiful, relaxed dining space decked out in rustic woods and tin, with cosy pellet heating in winter, and air conditioning in summer. It can sit 12 people indoors, and 6 outdoors presently. Their menu includes fish and chips, burgers, pizzas, pastries and sweets, with seasonal changes made to the menu as required. The fresh meat is supplied by ‘Tarna Valley Butcher,’ also local, and our

bakery needs come from ‘Ballarat Bakery’ daily, so they can provide the best quality for their customers. They have a team of experienced cooks who supply everything fresh daily, and suppliers who make it possible for them to serve you the best quality. Their beverage list includes milkshakes, thick shakes, frappes and smoothies as a delicious sweet treat on a beautiful summer day. Oh, and you can’t forget their coffee that is locally blended in Victoria. The coffee has become a huge success. ‘Calico Jack’ is a mild sweet blend with a delicate flavour supplied by friends at ‘Koffee Pirates,’ and it is really a hidden treasure. Paired with locally produced ‘Inglenook Dairy’ milk, and made by barista trained staff, you have a coffee that you will make you want to continually return.

Katie says they are continually looking for ways to better serve their customers and make your time at Rustic Edge café a talked about experience, so you will return again and again. So come on in all locals, tradies or passers-by to Rustic Edge Café and Takeaway and meet the friendly staff, grab a drink and something to eat, and enjoy the experience of what they have to offer. - Katie Tuohy

Haddon Community Learning Centre are pleased to announce that their partner organisation MYCOmmunity Applied Mycology has opened up its own laboratory space in Melbourne. For the last three years they have been providing citizen scientists with training and access to equipment. Having their own laboratory will mean they are able to provide much greater access and regular in-person training for the community. They will be sharing space with mushroom based biofabrication and recycling company ‘Fungi Solutions.’ Fungi Solutions uses waste streams such as agricultural and paper wastes to make environmentally friendly packaging, building and materials. This means that we will now be running new exciting Melbourne -based pre-accredited courses training people in biology, laboratory skills and in biofabrication techniques. Greater access to lab equipment means that we can also look at doing some shorter workshops on these topics at Haddon in 2022. So keep an eye on our Facebook page and websites for details on courses starting early February 2022. https:// myco.org.au https:// haddonlearning.org.au/ Photos Ema Corro

SUMMER GARDENING

LATEST NEWS FROM THE CFA During winter and spring most of Victoria has received above average rainfall. This has resulted in a later start to the fire season than in previous years. The current climate forecast for summer indicates above average rainfall in some parts of Victoria with generally warmer conditions in the west of the state, and average conditions in the east. The delayed harvest due to the recent rain has heightened the fire risk associated with cropping, and normal fire potential is expected in grassland and dry forests. Short duration fires are still likely to occur under the right conditions – hot dry windy days. It is critical that if you live, work or move to new areas, that you understand the fire risks near you. Know where you can go to get good information to make good decisions. Stay informed over summer – listen to information and warnings and be ready to enact your bushfire plan. We live in one of the most fire prone areas in the world, and even a normal fire season presents the potential of high risk. We urge residents to prepare their properties, and keep on top of fast growing grass. Grass fires can travel faster than you can run, they jump highways, and you may need to activate your plan even before a fire starts. It is not only people in rural areas that need to be aware of grass fire risk, but those on the urban fringe could also be at risk. In that situation, if a fire starts, walk 2 streets back into the urban area, and wait for emergency services to arrive. If you live more than 2 streets back, stay indoors with your doors and windows blocked by towels and turn off your air conditioning.

We all need to work with emergency services to prevent fires from starting. Unattended campfires are the cause of more than 10% of all Victorian bushfires, and are completely avoidable. It takes only one stray ember to cause a destructive fire, and grassfires can spread dramatically in just a few minutes, endangering communities. It is also important to remind people that fire trucks are very large, and they have to have clear access to properties in order to defend them. Over summer it is vital to know where you can get good information to make good decisions. There are a number of sources in Victoria: The VicEmergency app, emergency.vic.gov.au ABC radio or other emergency broadcasters including local community and commercial radio SKY TV

The VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226 and VicEmergency on Facebook and Twitter. FIRE RESTRICTIONS: Fire restrictions come into force on December 13th in the Ballarat and Golden Plains Shire, but as we go to print they are yet to be announced for Pyrenees Shire. Sign up to MyCFA to get local information on how to plan and prepare for fires and other emergencies in your area. SNAKES FOUND ROUND BALLARAT

The four most common snakes found around Ballarat are the Eastern Brown, Tiger, Copperhead and the Red Bellied Black. It is important to remember that though these snakes are all highly venomous, they are all protected by law and should not be killed. If the snakes do not go away on their own, they should be captured and released by a professional snake catcher. EASTERN BROWN SNAKE These snakes can grow up to about 2.4m in length, but are more usually around 1.5m. They can exist in almost all areas except for really dense forests. It is the 2nd most venomous snake in the world, and accounts for more than 60% of snakebite deaths in Australia, even though it has smaller fangs than most other snakes. They are often confused with other snakes because of the variation in their markings. They generally have a smaller head than other snakes, which is generally very dark to black, with a lighter brown body. They are a solitary snake, and even the mothers will leave juveniles to fend for themselves. and are generally most active during the day On days with soaring temperatures, they may come out at night. They generally eat small rodents but have been known to eat small birds, and other reptiles such as skinks. They generally find shelter around rocks, logs andin rabbit burrows or the like. They will also be found in piles of building materials and piles of firewood. Eastern browns are generally most active in mating season from early October through to about Christmas, but can be seen sunning themselves during winter so long as the sun is out and the temperature is over 14 deg C. TIGER SNAKE This is a highly venomous snake found in the southern states of the Australian mainland as well as Tasmania and offshore islands. They are really varied in colour, some with the vivid striped patter associated with this

snake, others are almost jet black, some brown and some with a very pale stiped pattern and their colour may vary according to the seasons. They are often mistaken for other snakes because of this. Tigers are the most tolerant of cooler temperatures, so are often the first snakes of the season to be seen. They are common in coastal areas, but also thrive in wetlands and around streams. Because of this their diet consists of frogs, skinks, birds and they are not opposed to a bit of cannibalism. A female Tiger Snake gives birth to around 20-30 live young in summer. COPPERHEADS Like the tiger, the Copperhead has adapted to more cooler climates. There is little difference between snakes in their colouring. They are generally black or dark grey on the top with a much lighter underbelly. Like the tiger, they also have live young (2-10) in the middle of summer.. They live in grasslands and open scrub, never travelling too far from water. They like to shelter around rocks and fallen logs, but are commonly found around human creations, such as compost bins and fire wood piles. They become active as soon as the weather starts to warm, and are generally noticed from August to May. People are not as opposed to having Copperheads, as they eat Tiger Snakes! RED BELLIED BLACK SNAKE This is the most commonly seen snake in our area, even though they are very timid snakes. They also have a very strong scent to them, and some people seem to be able to smell them out. They are easily recognisable for their shiny black back and red to pink underbelly. Even though they are venomous, it is a less potent venom that most of our other snakes, and there has never been a recorded death from the red-belly. Doesn’t mean it should be played with, as it can still make you very sick. They can generally be found around water, as in dams, creeks and other waterways, as well as swamps. They are great swimmers and are often mistaken for sticks as they float by. Because of their colouring, they absorb heat more readily than other snakes, so on really hot days, they hide by day and come out at night. Red Bellies also give birth to live young, but they are born in a membrane sac, which the young have to find their way out of shortly after birth. Red Bellied Blacks consume frogs, other reptiles, other snakes and are also fond of cannibalism. Because of their strong swimming skills, they can even consume fish underwater. Unfortunately for them, the Red Bellies favourite habitat is also the type of place that

humans want to live in, and they are losing their habitat because of this. Their numbers are said to be in decline. They are also easy food for kookaburras, other predatory birds and feral dogs and cats. So if you live in an area with snakes, please remember:

 

If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area. Don't attempt to capture or harm snakes. Instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher. Maintain lawns and clean up around your house, as snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, and building materials. Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately.

Photo: Moonies Dam. Remember snakes catchers charge fees to remove snakes, there is no free service. If you

call a licensed snake removal, or snake catcher to come to your home to catch a snake for you, the cost of the service fee and snake removal can be around $200 - $500 depending on location and other factors. Local snake catchers:

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A VAST SPACE EXHIBIT ST ARNAUD RAIL STATION - RAILLERY HUB

On exhibit until January 30, 2022 Australia has thousands of parks and Dunolly artist, Val Wilkinson, has explored, photographed and painted over 600 of them. In her radically modified 60-Series Landcruiser Val ‘ticked-off’ the parks on a state-by-state basis during what she describes as ‘the best decade of my life’. Many of the most iconic parks are very remote. Access tracks can be badly corrugated, impassable when wet, and a long way from roadside assist even if there was a phone signal which often there was not. The largest work in the exhibition, a diptych entitled 'Moonrise over Karlu Karlu', is based upon a watercolour completed Val’s last night camped at the Devil’s Marble’s Conservation Reserve. Also on show are four ‘en plein’ air sketches produced earlier that same sunny, but chilly July day in 2016. www.facebook.com/naudRailleryGallery

Mayor’s Message ~ FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK - December 2021. It is my great honour to be elected Mayor of Golden Plains Shire for 2021-22. I have a genuine passion for this Shire - its environment, its people, its diversity and its potential. And I feel excited about the possibility to achieve great things for our community over the next year and our Council term. I thank my fellow Councilor colleagues for their endorsement as Mayor, with special appreciation to Cr. Helena Kirby, for her commitment and dedication in this role for the first year of our term. I congratulate Cr. Kirby for her election as Deputy Mayor and look forward to continuing to work together this year. Last year, our group of new and returning councilors enjoyed visiting many townships and meeting residents across the Shire, which was valuable engagement into our Council plan 2021-2025. Our second year is sure to be busy, too, as we move forward on delivering on these commitment for the people of Golden plains and advocate for the Shire in the upcoming Federal and State elections. Following a challenging year with the COVID-19 pandemic, I join council in wishing all residents a very Merry Christmas and a happy, relaxing New Year. On behalf of the Councillors, we look forward with excitement to meeting more of the many outstanding people who live in our Shire and working together to represent all residents in the year ahead. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble.
