CAPTAIN COMPOST VISITS HADDON We had a visit from Captain Compost in May as part of Compost Week who showed the children how to build and maintain a worm farm. Thank you to Jayne for all the work you did in getting and supplying lots of resources. Visit Captain Compost on Facebook, or check out the recyclingrevolution.com.au website for more information about composting and scheduled workshops. Above photo: Kirsty Lucas (with Summer Lucas) who won the first green drink bottle during the quiz questions. The children learnt a lot about caring for their environment as well. Laughing and learning by all participants was the theme of the day. There will be a follow-up visit by Captain Compost in the coming months.

NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE WEEK Photos above and on right are some of the Tuesday and Friday sewing class ladies who were very busy as usual on different projects. ALL RAMPED UP TO SKATE IN SMYTHESDALE An eager group of young skaters undeterred by the cloudy skies were the first people to officially take to the redeveloped Smythesdale Skate Park at its opening on Friday 31 May, 2019. Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey and Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle MP officially opened the skate park, joined by Woady Yaloak Rec Reserve Committee of Management Chairperson Bronwyn Cranny; Golden Plains Shire Deputy Mayor Joanne Gilbert, and Crs Des Phelan and Helena Kirby; Member for Western Victoria Andy Meddick MP, and an enthusiastic group of local families to celebrate the impressive new facility in Smythesdale. The significant redevelopment of the Smythesdale Skate Park at 55 Heales Street includes a big blue half pipe, several new ramps and skate elements, sheltered seats, and a basketball ring. New landscaping works have completed the community facility. The project was funded by $150,000 from Golden Plains Shire Council and a $100,000 Sport and Recreation Victoria grant from the State Government. Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said the redeveloped skate park is an impressive recreational facility for families living in the north of the Shire. “Golden Plains is a large Shire and we are pleased to deliver this impressive recreational facility for our growing population in the north of the Shire. The redevelopment was designed for all ages with ramps and elements to suit all abilities and cater for all wheels – skateboards, roller skates and scooters. “The young people who turned out to participate in free skate clinics on opening day had a blast. The single-digit temperature and drizzling rain didn’t bother them at all and seeing their excitement made opening day a real community celebration. “It’s a significant investment for the redevelopment of an existing skate park, but Council is committed to delivering top quality community facilities and we thank the State Government for supporting this wonderful project. It’s a great location near the primary school and recreation reserve, and we’re sure the new skate park will be a popular destination for young people of Smythesdale and all the surrounding townships.”

SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS Making the decision to move you or a loved one into care can be an emotionally stressful time, and any help and guidance that can be given can help ease this burden. Our aim is to support people in regional Victoria, to access the aged care solutions that will best meet their needs. With more than 20 years’ experience in the aged care sector, we have the first hand experience to help take the emotional strain out of the need to place a loved one into care. We do this through: Face to face meetings to work out what is important to you, what will best suit you and your family’s needs, and help to guide you through the process. We will short list available accommodation, and accompany you to visit and review these options. We will help with the completion of paperwork involved, including Assets and Income assessment. We can also help with negotiating payments and daily fees. We can also give advice on what can be taken to the new accommodation. Contact us to discuss how Seamless Transitions can help you. You can do your certificate online and start any time and also have the convenience of finishing it in your own time. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can complete this part of the course in the Centre’s computer lab. Your certificate will be emailed to you when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. The cost will depend on the level of certificate and whether you need to use the Centre's kitchen as a simulated workplace with an assessor. Call us fore details. Woady Yaloak HERALD ~ Your Local Connection

Term 3, 2019

JUST F0R FUN ACTIVITIES Lots of people, big and small, love a llama. Llamas come in a wide range of colours—from pure white through fawn, brown and grey to jet black. It’s even possible to get spotted llamas. They are called Appaloosas, just like spotted horses. In the Andes, the local Indians decorate their llamas with colourful tassels in their ears and lovely, bright saddle cloths. Our llama Loretta is decked out for Christmas in July so let you paints, pencils or crayons run wild and see how colourful you can make her.

After a busy campaign, the Federal Election is over and the Coalition has been re-elected to lead the Federal Government. As a fast growing regional municipality, Council is always seeking more government investment to deliver projects and program for our local people. During the Federal Election campaign, we were enthusiastic in lobbying both major parties, seeking strong bi-partisan commitments in our Shire. With more than $4.6 million committed to the voters of Golden Plains by the Coalition, Council will be working with the Federal Government to support the timely delivery of these four valuable projects:

$3.2 million to build a new roundabout at the entrance to Bannockburn

DEADLINE FOR TERM 4 ISSUE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2019

$832,000 for female friendly change rooms for members of the Golden Plains Soccer Club at the Bannockburn Soccer Facility; $500,000 to upgrade the club rooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex; and $100,000 for lighting at the Lethbridge Recreation Reserve; and All these commitments were made in the marginal electorate of Corangamite and many of our townships did not receive election commitments, however the good news is that every dollar assigned to deliver key infrastructure saves Council money, and those funds can be redirected to deliver more projects across the Shire. We look forward to working closely with the federal members of parliament representing our electorates to make sure the people of Golden Plains remain front and centre in their minds and their decisions when they’re in parliament in Canberra. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO KYOKUSHIN KARATE (SHINKYOKUSHIN) The martial arts of Asia are often many centuries old so it may come as a surprise to learn that Kyokushin style of karate was founded as recently as 1964. Koreanborn Japanese Masutatsu Oyama developed this style of stand-up fighting after studying judo, boxing and Okinawa and Goju-Ryu karate. Starting in September 1947, Oyama decisively won the All-Japan Open Karate Championship. This was followed by many victories in different martial championships and tournaments with dissimilar rules and regulations. Many times, he challenged masters from different martial arts, but always ended up as the clear-cut winner. In this way, he practiced and perfected his special style o karate. Masutatsu Oyama opened his first dojo in 1953 in Tokyo. Many of his apprentices were practitioners of different martial arts, and Oyama compared their styles and forms with his style of karate. He adopted the best techniques and concepts and incorporated them in his training to found Kyokushin Karate. The formation of the world organisation began in 1960, and it was officially open in July 1965. It was named the International Karate Organisation, later to become the World Karate Organisation (WKO). It was at this time when Oyama introduced the name for his style in karate – Kyokushin (the ultimate truth) – and began spreading it all over the world, creating one of the biggest martial arts organisations on the planet. Because of his contribution to the development of karate, Oyama was awarded the honoured title “Sosai”. Kyokushin karate proved to be the hardest and most aggressive style of karate. Kyokushin fighters were noted for their exceptional strength and high fighting spirit, leading to its recognition in wider martial arts circles. Today, “WKO – Shinkyokushin” is the biggest organisation in full-contact karate, with more than 12 million members in 93 countries. Its popularity is constantly increasing, so much so that it will become an Olympic sport in 2020 when Japan hosts the 32 nd Summer Olympic Games. Techniques and training One of the goals of kyokushin is to strengthen and improve character by challenging one's self through rigorous training. Kyokushin training consists of three main elements: technique, forms, and sparring. These are sometimes referred to as the three "Ks" after the Japanese words for them: kihon (basics), kata (Imaginary forms of fight), and kumite (sparring). Kata is a form of ritualised self-training in which patterned or memorised movements are done to practice combat manoeuvrings. Sparring, also called kumite, is used to train the practitioners to apply the various techniques in a fighting situation. Sparring is usually an important part of training in most Kyokushin organisations, especially for experienced students at the upper levels. In most Kyokushin organisations, hand and elbow strikes to the head or neck are prohibited. However, kicks to the head, knee strikes, punches to the upper body, and kicks to the inner and outer leg are allowed. In some Kyokushin organiations, especially outside of a tournament environment, gloves and shin protectors are worn. Children often wear headgear to lessen the impact of any kicks to the head. Speed and control are instrumental in sparring and in a training environment it is not the intention of either practitioner to injure theri opponent as much as to successfully execute the proper strike. Tournament fighting under knockdown karate rules is significantly different as the objective is to down an opponent. Full-contact sparring in Kyokushin is considered the ultimate test of strength, endurance, technique and spirit.
