LEARN LOCAL CELEBRATES LAUNCH OF NEW WEBSITE AND AWARDS PROGRAM Learn Local organisation, Haddon Community Learning Centre today celebrated the launch of a new website for the Learn Local education and training sector, as well as the opening of nominations for the sector’s annual awards program. Centre Manager from Haddon Community Learning Centre said there are over 300 government-registered Learn Local organisations right across Victoria that work tirelessly to help over 110,000 learners achieve their learning goals each year. “Learn Locals help people to return to study, improve their reading, writing and maths skills, gain a qualification, get a job or learn something new,” Ms Coker said. “The flexible, approachable and welcoming environments created by Learn Local organisations are the ideal setting for many people to return to, or start afresh, on their learning path. “The new Learn Local network website at learnlocal.org.au makes it easy for people to find a Learn Local organisation in their community and start their learning journey. It also includes other features such as learners’ stories, news and events and an easy way to browse study options.” The new website also includes information about the Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board’s annual Victorian Learn Local Awards which provide an opportunity to showcase the remarkable achievements across the Learn Local sector. Ms Coker said the Awards are a great way of paying tribute to the inspirational efforts of learners, practitioners and organisations from across the state. “The Learn Local Awards are just one way of showcasing the amazing work done every day by the dedicated staff, volunteers and learners in the Learn Local sector. With over $50,000 available for winners and finalists it makes sense to submit a nomination.” Nominations for the Learn Local Awards close on 6 June. This year’s categories are:

Outstanding Pre-accredited Learner

Outstanding Practitioner (Paid or Volunteer)

Outstanding Pathway Program

Excellence in Creating Local Solutions

Innovation in Digital Literacy

Learn Local for Business

LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE PERUVIAN PASO HORSES Ten years ago my husband Len and I, then city slickers, decided with approaching retirement for a country life change.Since I was a small (disabled) child I had loved horses. My husband Len was a successful working dog trainer and trialer. He had been researching Peruvian horses and their history for many years and was fascinated with their amazing gait, temperament, and brio. I promptly fell in love with these wonderful creatures also. Hence our quest for a small herd of these horses began. We were lucky to meet Christiane Yeardley of Narrawin Stud and we commenced a program to obtain the best mares we could in Australia. We purchased Cortesana NS, Carisma NS, and Caliente NS, all of whom have strong bloodlines. During this time, we went to Peru to get up close and personal with more of these horses, and went on a mini tour with a human dynamo called Mimi Busk Downey of Crescent Moon Ranch in Canada. We developed a strong relationship with Mimi who had been breeding these horses for about 30 years, and she also takes tours to Peru, exploring the horses, culture and history. Mimi offered to look out for a good colt for us to import with impeccable blood lines to breed to our mares. After corresponding for six months Len and I had a reality check and realised we were novices at this “Stallion” business, we couldn’t possibly handle a green young stallion. After much soul searching Mimi then made us a most generous offer of her Senior Stallion RTP Casino. And we are eternally grateful to her and Dale. This horse has done it All!!!! And so easy to handle, (our friend likened him to a child’s pony). Casino arrived in May, and has settled in very well. He is presently serving all our mares and is producing fine quality foals, some of which may be for sale to selected homes. We have also purchased from Narrawin Stud two more brood mares, one being the best brood mare presently in Australia. So we definitely in for the long haul. Casino was successfully introduced at Equitana in 2008 and we are hoping to get a group of people (aficionados) together who are as enthusiastic about these treasures as we are, and will continue promoting these horses when we no longer can. We now have a Registry for the Peruvian Horse here in Australia, their numbers are small in comparison to other breeds, but considering they are the SMOOTHEST riding horse in the world, we believe they will be a welcome addition to the horse world (especially for the older riders who seek a softer smoother seat) We have recently moved to the Haddon Area, and would be pleased to share these amazing animals with anyone interested in learning more,. Check out our Facebook page Gunspring Peruvians 437 Racecourse Road Haddon.

Visual Arts Exhibition commemorating 175 years of settlement at Snake Valley

Artist Nicole Fox Humber in collaboration with Elders of the Gundijtmara People, worked with the students of the Woady Yaloak Primary School; Snake Valley Campus to record on canvas the history of 175 years of settlement in the Valley, with a focus on acknowledgement of heritage and recognition of the Indigenous peoples of the area. The project focused on the “Gundijtmara Dreaming Creation,” their meeting places, dance, hunter gathering and song-lines linking the Gundijtmara people to land/country; through to the coming of Europeans and the establishment of the Snake Valley Township. Throughout the project Nicole instructed the enthusiastic students in the techniques of colour, tone, texture and form; Nicole and Dianne spent many hours behind the scenes with preparation and completion of the works. The students have had the added benefit of learning about the Indigenous connection to the district along with the contribution of white settlement. There is also a connection with John Flynn (Flying Doctors). The final works of Art; and exhibition was opened on Saturday March 8th at the Snake Valley Campus. The project has been made possible via a funding grant from “Regional Arts Victoria”. For more information about Nicole’s work go to http:// www.artstrail.com.au/ artist.php?id=190
