Camp Australia “Before and After School Care”

Operating at Haddon in 2019 In 2019 Camp Australia will be offering a Before and After school care program in Haddon. The service will operate in the Haddon Community Learning Centre starting in Term 1, 2019. Many families have expressed concern regarding the transporting of the children into Happy Jacks, Ballarat to participate in the service. In addition there have concerns relating to the delay in the collection of students that occurs due to the pickup from other schools. Happy Jacks will continue to offer their service and parents will have the choice of either provider. Families will be pleased to hear that the cost of Camp Australia is to be $22 in the afternoon and $16 in the morning with rebates this will be a very minimal out of pocket charge to parents. The Primary School Early Birds program will be phased out and students requiring early drop off will access the before school care through Camp Australia, again this will attract a very modest out of pocket charge to parents and will be available at an earlier time. Before School Care will operate from: 6.30 am-8.45am and After School Care from 3.30 p.m. – 6.30 p.m. Students will be escorted across to school in the morning and collected at 3.30 pm. Casual positions will be available. The school has expressed their delight in having the support of the Haddon Community Learning Centre to host the program and the centre is very happy to be able to enter into this great partnership with the school. School “Pupil Free” days will offer a program from 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. More information will be coming out soon with enrolment packs available from the primary school for families keen to access the program.

QUILT RAFFLE WINNER

WHACKY AND WILD CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

The raffle winner of the Haddon Quilters beautiful child's Dr Seuss quilt, sewn by Barbara McKay, was Tracey Steiner from Ballarat. Tracey was so thrilled to be the recipient.

ICELAND - A lovely Christmas tradition in Iceland is that people will often exchange books on Christmas Eve, then spend the rest of the night reading them and eating chocolate. The tradition is part of a season called Jolabokaflod, or “The Christmas Book Flood.” Because of this tradition Iceland publishes more books per capita then any other country and sells most of them between the months of September and November. Garry Mann

Congratulations Tracey and enjoy your lovely quilt!

Sounds like a great tradition to adopt! https://greenglobaltravel.com/christmas-traditions-around-the-world/

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED BALLARAT and the Ballarat Agriculture Society The Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society visited the weekly rally of the Riding for the Disabled Association recently. This was held for the first time at the brilliant facilities on Creswick Road, Mt. Rowan. The A&P have been very strong supporters of the RDA for many years, but with space at a premium at the old Showgrounds, the two committees combined to reassure the riders that they would have a fantastic day at the alternate venue. On the day, the A&P thanked the riders for a wonderful display, and followed up with news that the group would be able to return to the showgrounds next year, and that A & P would continue to supply all the ribbons and support the RDA. The event started on the Thursday and involved setting up the arena, with Caroline Doodt supplying three ute loads of potted plants to beautify the courses. On Friday, Mr Bill Rinaldi arrived at 7.30am with fourteen ponies and horses. Bill has looked after the group every week of the year for the last forty years! The RDA is very grateful and extend their thanks to the Rinaldi Family for their continued support in supplying all the riders with these brilliant ponies. The Ballart Riding for the Disabled has a large band of volunteers, without whom this group could not exist. RDA Centres provide suitable horses, trained volunteer helpers, accredited RDA coaches, riding and safety equipment to run a range of equestrian activities including: structured riding classes, recreational horse riding, mounted games/competitive riding, vaulting, carriage driving, dressage and equestrian camps Ballarat RDA Chairman Bob Bath thanked everyone for their continued and invaluable support. It is not at all surprising that Bob and his committee enjoy their involvement and that the volunteers eagerly roll up every week for they enjoy the fun and friendships they have formed. The kettle is always on, and morning tea is always enjoyed by all. For information contact Bob on 0427 322 657 Contributor: Glenn Drake MAKE FOR CHRISTMAS BERRY AND MERINGUE ICE CREAM SLICE Great for Christmas or for a summer dessert and super easy. Artists Profile – Judy Anderton Over the last eight or so years I have been enjoying my card making for family and friends. The craft is enjoyable, soothing, satisfying and a wonderful way to socialise and meet new people. It is a craft that can be done at home as well as being easily transportable to other crafting venues around Victoria and even aboard a crafting cruise! I love being able to make a special card for a particular individual. I have been enjoying card making for about eight years now. It is lovely to be able to create a special birthday card especially for a particular person. I enjoy making a large amount of Christmas cards for all my friends and family and a variety of other types of cards. My card making craft has connected me with a wonderful group of friends which grows by the

day. I meet up with like-minded people at scrap n card days, weekend papercraft retreats around Victoria and for my special birthday last year joined a South Pacific crafting cruise where I met a a lovely group of ladies from around Australia. Judy will be conducting a children class at the Haddon Community Learning Centre on April 13th with an Origami Shadow Box card workshop so check out the course guide for details in the middle section of the paper.

The Fisherman A Short Story by Jeanine In the early evening he wanders down with some slices of bread and fish food pellets which he throws into the dam to try and entice the fish to the surface. He sits on the jetty; a lonely figure contemplating the world. His companions are his little dog, exploring the edge of the dam for new scents and the ginger tabby, who sits on the bench next to him purring her contentment. The cat harangues him until he lets her have some of the pallets then she is content to just keep him company. He watches as large fish slowly swim to the surface and suck in the treats offered. He can only assume they are carp but how they got into the dam is a mystery. Smaller trout and perch, which he has introduced, can also be seen feeding, jumping about above the surface. It took a lot of years to build that jetty; only working on it bit by bit for as long as his body let him continue. Now all that work was worth it. As the evening cools and the sky darkens with the dusk it is his sanctuary. He practices his fly fishing technique; casting, retrieving, casting, retrieving and casting again until he gets the fly far enough across the dam to his liking. Occasionally he will catch a tree behind him and curses his misfortune but then he retrieves the fly from the tree and starts again. Now and again his wife walks down and joins him. Sometimes she’ll just sit and keep him company and sometimes she’ll drop a line into the water as well. They sit in companionable silence; listening to the different birds calling to each other; watching the surface of the water and the antics of the fish or will chat quietly about events of the day. It doesn’t seem to matter what they try to temp the fish with; whether its lures or plastics or flies, the fish don’t seem to be interested in anything but the bread and fish pallets. At times he is sure the fish are toying with him. Where ever he places his fly they stick their heads up in the place he has just left. The lowering sun reflects off the water, lengthening the shadows of the trees. A little wood duck swims back and forward across the reflection causing the water to ripple and shimmer in her wake. As the dusk deepens the kookaburra babies sit on the branches above growling at him that they are hungry and that it is well past time for them to be fed. He winds in his line and as he trundles up the hill towards the house the babies fly from branch to branch just to make sure he is aware of their presence then sit patiently while he goes inside to get their meal. One night as he is pulling in his line he feels a tug and a bit of weight at the end of the line. As he reels it in he gets his wife to grab the net and lift up his catch. When he sees what he has caught he curses his luck. It’s one of the little trout; not what he wanted to catch. It has swallowed the fly making it impossible for him to retrieve so he cuts the line and releases it back into the dam fully expecting to see it floating belly up, but it swims back down into the murky water alive and well. A couple of weeks later he manages to catch one of the perch and again curses his luck; still not a carp. After he sets another fly on his line, he sits back down and starts again. The carp again rise to the surface seemingly mocking him but he just patiently casts, retrieves, casts, retrieves, casts and retrieves again knowing that one day he will get one of the big buggers.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS - Saint Nicholas Day is observed on December 5/6 in Western Christian countries and December 19 in Eastern Christian countries. It is the feast day of Saint Nicholas and celebrated as a Christian festival with particular regard to his reputation as a bringer of gifts, as well as through the attendance of Mass or other worship services. In Europe, especially in "Germany and Poland, boys would dress as bishops begging alms for the poor. In Ukraine, children wait for St. Nicholas to come and to put a present under their pillows if the children were good during the year. Children who behaved badly may expect to find a twig or a piece of coal under their pillows. In the Netherlands, "Dutch children put out a clog filled with hay and a carrot for Saint Nicholas' horse. On Saint Nicholas Day, gifts are tagged with personal humorous rhymes written by the sender." In the United States, one custom associated with Saint Nicholas Day is children leaving their shoes in the foyer on Saint Nicholas Eve in hope that Saint Nicholas will place some coins on the soles. The American Santa Claus, as well as the British Father Christmas, derive from Saint Nicholas. "Santa Claus" is itself derived in part from the Dutch Sinterklaas, the saint's name in that language. However the gift giving associated with these descendant figures is associated with Christmas Day rather than Saint Nicholas Day itself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas_Day

LET’S CALL INTO SPROUTS SWIM HOLE In my very youthful years, my family owned a farm just out of Drysdale (near Geelong), and my father used to recall a story involving several young men who were working on district farms. After work on a very hot summer’s day, they decided to have a swim in the local waterhole at Sprouts Reserve. It was situated 2 miles out of Drysdale on Drakes Road. It was named by several families who had arrived from England to take up farming on the Bellarine Peninsula. Sprouts was a very popular place to cool off after a hard days’ work, but the men on this occasion were in a hurry and did not take the time to collect a change of clothes. They were not expecting any witnesses to their “dip” in Sprouts Dam. It was not until they spotted Phyllis, a very good-looking local girl, riding down the dirt road, that they knew they were in trouble and that they would be discovered. After working all day cutting asparagus in Drysdale, Phyllis would have known these young “skinny dippers”. They called out to their visitor saying that she could join them, and that it would be more enjoyable than out there on her “treadly”. Phyllis said she would join them, but instead of getting out of her clothes as they had hoped, she gathered the men’s clothing from the bank where they thought they were safe and tucked them into the basket on her bicycle. She then hopped back onto her bicycle and took off up the road heading to her parents place. The enthusiastic young men took off after Phyllis, but unfortunately, they were not gaining any ground in catching her. So one intrepid young man took a short cut across the paddocks trying to save the day. A neighbour who was being thoroughly entertained by the spectacle, yelled to the young man taking the shortcut--- “WATCH OUT FOR THE FENCE! THE TOP IS BARBED WIRE AND THERE IS A BULL IN THE PADDOCK!” To the farmer’s surprise, the young lad stopped in his tracks, and returned to the old dirt road, from where he had come. Another neighbouring farmer also engrossed in the happenings knew the young man and called out to him, “Hey Mick! There is no barbed wire on that fence!” “I know that” Mick replied with a laugh. He was obviously more concerned that there may have been a bull in the paddock. And in his urgency to retrieve his ‘runaway clothes’ he had missed seeing that there was a gate open, so there could not have been any bull in the paddock. The ‘skinny-dipping’ episode provided the local townsfolk with a big laugh for several weeks, especially as the truth of the story was greatly exaggerated in the retelling. Also the erstwhile young men were named and shamed to everyone’s delight. This is a true story as my father was the Mick in the story, and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and the retelling of the tale, and Phyllis was his niece. She managed to make it home without being caught and she hid the men’s clothes at their property’s waterhole. She was too embarrassed by the episode that she never told her parents, and asked her Uncle Mick not to spill the beans. I think she was more embarrassed than the skinny dippers were. Eventually the truth did come out, but it was a great joke Phyllis!!! - Contributed by Glen Drake.

CHRISTMAS IN FRANCE How lovely is this decorative idea with the teddy bears? So cute! My pen friend in France sent these photos to me. The other is of a local Christmas market. She lives in Rambervillers. They rarely get snow there though. Would be lovely to spend Christmas here don’t you think?

Solution page 26 WHACKY AND WILD CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Norway: Perhaps one of the most unorthodox Christmas Eve traditions can be found in Norway, where people hide their brooms. It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. To this day, many people still hide their brooms in the safest place in the house to stop them from being stolen.

The observer needs to hold a food safety qualification that is at an equal or higher level than the course you are taking. Your certificate will be emailed to you when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. The cost will depend on the level of certificate and whether you need to use the Centre's kitchen as a simulated workplace with an assessor. Call us fore details. NB: ALL ACCREDITED COURSES REQUIRE A USI NUMBER. WE CAN ASSIST YOU WITH THAT IF YOU REQUIRE.

Term 1, 2019 The Woady Yaloak HERALD is published each term as a project of the Haddon Community Learning Centre. Registration No. 12494

Mayor’s Message December, 2018 It was my great honour to be elected Mayor of Golden Plains Shire for 2018 -19 and I look forward to working with the new Deputy Mayor Cr Joanne Gilbert and the Councillor team to have a productive, successful year for Golden Plains. In November, two of Council’s grant applications for road projects awarded significant funding from the State Government. First, we secured a $500,000 contribution for vital safety upgrades on Teesdale-Lethbridge Road and second, another grant of $943,000 will partner with Council’s $472,000 investment to widen, replace and seal Tall Tree Road in Lethbridge, the next step in delivering the Golden Plains Food Production Precinct, a key economic project for the region. Road safety is a priority of Council and we will continue to lobby and invest in improving our large and diverse road network. Thank you to the 1,200 residents who shared their ideas in the community engagement process for Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy. A draft Strategy is in the works and will be back out for comment in April 2019. Also, keep an eye out for the draft Communications and Marketing Strategy, open for comment in late December. I hope you all have a memorable Christmas and safe, happy New Year.

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey TWILIGHT MARKET BANNOCKBURN

The Golden Plains Twilight Market will return on Thursday 20 December, from 4 to 9 pm, following the success of last year’s event. Generously sponsored by Powershop and Bendigo Bank, the Twilight Market will feature farm-fresh produce, handcrafted gifts and artwork, live music, craft beer and a wine and cocktail bar. The Voice star Johnny Rollins will entertain the crowd and there will also be food vans and lots of fun for the whole family.

STAY FIRE SAFE THIS SUMMER

CHAT N CHEW LUNCHEONS HADDON Fire restrictions are now in place in Golden Plains Shire. All residents are responsible for maintaining their property to the fire prevention guidelines so if you’re heading out of town, make sure your home is prepared. If you’re staying at home, review and restock your emergency kit and remember to confirm your home emergency plan with your holiday visitors. Council has completed its first round of Fire Hazard Inspections and the great news is there has been a 50% drop in noncompliant properties compared to last year. If you have questions about your Notice, call the Council’s Environment Services team.

The Chat and Chew luncheons will continue the third Thursday of the month (except January) at 12.30pm. We are pleased to announce that the Haddon Community Learning Centre will be taking over providing the local luncheons so that these popular community get togethers can continue to operate. We hope regular and new community members will come along and join us for a “Chat and Chew” very soon. Please note we will require an RSVP so as we can know numbers for catering and therefore cut down on any over supply and wastage. This will help us to be able to subsidise the cost of the meals provided. So come and join us in December. We would love to see you there. Don’t forget to please phone 5342 7050 to book your place.
