Welcome to Our Term 1 2019 Course Guide Well we hope you had a lovely festive season and New Years celebration and we want to welcome you to our first program for 2019. First of all we have great news! We are very pleased to welcome wonderful Alana back on Wednesdays for Yoga sessions after the birth of dear baby Hunter. So you have two options. Morning classes at 9.30 am or an evening session at 6.30 pm, both

an hours duration. We also have delightful Glenys available for Mums yoga sessions on Mondays at 1 pm - but you don’t have to have a baby to join this class, it is available to everyone.

We have some fantastic new courses on offer for you this term. We have an Introduction to Conservation and Land Management course that will be very hands on, with field trips in the local area. We are very excited about this course and to be able to help you learn more about our local environs with Cherie. There are the new “Web Health Check” sessions with Morgan Williams of Designscope; a must for every business with a website and a new “Websites for Small Business” course in the evenings. Other great new offerings include, a “Sew with Confidence” course that will run for fourteen weeks concentrating on skills for personal use, or for starting up your own business. We also have on offer sewing drop-in sessions that will be for anyone to come in and do their own projects, or Maree can help you with any of your ’sewing’ problems if you are having trouble with anything in the sewing line. And we have a lovely “Introduction to Massage Workshop” on offer for the first time. You could learn to do this to help yourself, or family members, or gauge if you want to embark on a career in massage and pursue further studies. In our art and craft offerings this term we have the lovely Carolyn Elsworthy back showing you how to do “Indigo Shibori Dyeing”, some new pencil drawing techniques with Marita, and a workshop especially for children to make origami shadow box cards with the very talented Judy. And don’t forget to look at the “Wilton Cake Decorating” course with Sue from Le Kitchen. Would be fabulous to do and you get a certificate on successful completion of that course. Our most popular courses from last term will be returning. We have great computer classes for all ages and

held unless fees are paid or a deposit received and payment plan arranged. Payments due at least one week prior to course commencement. Refunds cannot be given once a class has commenced or at least 5 business days’ notice is provided as we are committed to pay course costs. Refunds will be given if the class is cancelled for any reason. Prospective students should be aware that some courses/ activities may not proceed if there are insufficient numbers to cover operational costs. Concession rates apply where indicated and only on presentation of a current concession card.

 Notification will be given only when classes are cancelled or rescheduled. Please assume that the course will proceed unless otherwise notified. Exploring Computers *FLEXI LEARN ESSENTIAL COMPUTERS This course is designed to provide flexibility with learning options for you. It can be done fully in class, partly, or all online in your own home when you want. Topics can include computer essentials, cloud applications such as "Dropbox," Google Drive, Microsoft programs, and/or photo editing programs; useful for personal, business, marketing and social media platforms such as Facebook. This course allows flexibility to give time to cover topics where you may need extra help with, or that you specifically want to cover, so give us a call to discuss! DAY:

Come for one or two sessions or however many you need. We can offer help with individual Microsoft Office programs— from simple functions such as setting up a Word template to sorting data and creating graphs in Excel, editing, inserting and formatting photos, research via the internet, and getting the most out of your email—you tell us what you need and we will work out a plan to help. It explores options for creating a web site using free web site building platforms to promote a small business and to interact with potential clients and/or customers Learn how to get started on website creation platform Word Press to build an online presence. Accredited Certificates and Short Courses INTRODUCTION TO CPR AND DEFIBRILLATION A qualified first aider can’t be guaranteed to be available in every emergency so it’s a great idea for everyone to know how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator. These sessions are designed to give you the information you need to be able to know what to do in an emergency if a trained first aider is not available. The first part of the session will cover CPR while the second part will introduce defibrillation. Please note: You can attend just the CPR section if you wish but if you want to attend the defibrillator section, you MUST do the CPR session first. At the CPR session, learn about: 

Following changes to national training rules, assessment for online Food Safety Training now has two components: a series of online questions to assess the student’s knowledge and a assessed workplace practical skills assignment. You can do your certificate online and start any time and also have the convenience of finishing it in your own time. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can complete this part of the course in the Centre’s computer lab. The workplace assignment is completed on the job, in a real or simulated workplace environment, and observed by a suitably qualified 3rd party observer. The observer needs to hold a food safety qualification that is at an equal or higher level than the course you are taking. Your certificate will be emailed to you when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. The cost will depend on the level of certificate and whether you need to use the Centre's kitchen as a simulated workplace with an assessor. Call us fore details. The DRSABCD action plan and responding to emergency situations; Managing unconscious casualties, and the basic steps for performing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - chest compressions, duration, etc.

The defibrillation session will cover: How a works; How to use a defibrillator When to use a defibrillator and How to access a defibrillator at a worksite or other location. Trainer MaryLou Cartledge has extensive experience in teaching first aid to students. In many courses and she is well placed to give you an excellent basic grounding in these important skills. So don’t miss out on this opportunity to gain what could be lifesaving information.    

Special Interest Training Courses *LET’S TRAIN THE TRAINER Do you have a skill that you could teach but lack the confidence or knowledge in how to do that? Or do you need to learn what skills you need to be able to teach at our centre or other education centres? Then this course can help you learn to plan and design a basic effective training course. Learn how to communicate effectively and gain techniques to be able to provide encouragement , coaching and evaluate your learners and your own performance. NOTE: You can study the Introduction to Permaculture, or the Introduction to Horticulture separately or do the combined course and save money. We can also organise specialised sessions so give us a call to enquire.

INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE & HORTICULTURE Learn basic principles of “Permaculture & Horticulture” with hands -on learning. This full course provides you with work-related skills relevant to these sectors and leads into accredited Horticulture, or Agriculture certificate courses. It’s great for those who are returning to study as mature age students who may be thinking of undertaking further studies on this subject. Pre-accredited courses are gently paced and ease you back into study in a fun way. Give us a call if you require any further information, or if you need assistance to decide what is right for you! The combined course starts on Thursday February 7th and costs only $130.00 for ACFE funded qualified learners (concession $115.00). Please see the full details below of all the sessions and dates. INTRODUCTION TO HORTICULTURE Gain first-hand practical experience in horticulture, landscaping and gardening. It is a great starting point for people thinking about turning their passion into a career in horticulture, or simply for home food growers who want to learn more. Working as a team with fellow participants, you will gain a broad overview and practical, hands-on experience in plant recognition, propagation, planting, soils, climates, environmentally sustainable work

INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE Are your interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle? Permaculture could be the answer for you. It is a practical design concept that enables people to establish productive environments that provide food, energy, shelter, material and non-material needs, as well as the social and economic infrastructure that supports them. This course will teach the basic principles to help you to learn how you can incorporate the principles at home, regardless of whether you live on block or a bigger property. Free Informational Services DELWP MIDLANDS MOBILE DESK Call in and catch up with Trish Young from the Midlands District of Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFM Vic). You can talk to Trish about any FFM Vic activities in our state forests. You can view the current planned burning program, talk about firewood coupes or recreation activities or weeds and pests on public land, or how to apply to become a Project Fire Fighter. FFM Vic is part of the Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning and Trish can connect you to the appropriate person in the department to address any queries. Environment *INTRODUCTION TO CONSERVATION AND LAND MANAGEMENT COURSE The course will introduce "Conservation and Land Management" topics, with emphasis on practical flora, fauna and habitat knowledge, identification and data research and collection. You will enjoy field trips with a hands on approach to learning. Do the course to increase your knowledge of the local environment where you live, or as an introduction to further tertiary courses. The course will explore the opportunities for you to undertake further study, or to pursue paid or unpaid work in the industry. You can gain knowledge to be able to go on to study a Certificate II, III, IV or Diploma in Conservation and Land Management. Or you can explore options for other environment/outdoor education related fields with opportunity to gain experience and further skills by working and volunteering with local groups ‘BEN’ or Landcare community-based conservation programs. Do you lack confidence, want to buy a new machine or overlocker but don’t know what to choose or how to use them? Or do you just want to make one special piece or item for yourself or a gift? Then come see Maree and she will help you with all of these issues. ORIGAMI SHADOW BOX CARD MAKING WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

LET’S DRAW WITH MARITA REYNOLDS Come join in another of our lovely drawing workshops with Marita. You will learn to draw this bee on a flower. Bring a friend and share a few hours of fun and relaxation together. BEE ON A FLOWER Our friend the bee is an interesting subject to do in coloured pencil. By using popular pencil techniques you can create a life like image. Marita supplies the coloured pencils as part of the workshop. ELEPHANT IN GRAPHITE WITH MARITA - TERM 2 COME and learn, how to work with graphite pencils to create this elephant. Marita will take you through a step by step process, where you create your own elephant image. Enjoy learning to produce creases, wrinkles and folds with graphite pencil. Have fun creating your special origami card with some simple folding. Can be used for any occasion: birthdays, Mother's Day, Friends, etc. This workshop is suitable for all ages although younger ones may want the help of an adult .A second kit can be started at the workshop or taken home. Special Workshops INTRODUCTION TO INDIGO SHIBORI DYEING Shibori is not a simple tie-dye but in fact a centuries old Japanese technique of manipulating fabric by folding, twisting, binding, twisting, clamping, stitching and compressioning cloth fabric prior to dyeing. Indigo dyeing was most popular in the early Edo period in Japan when lower class people where forbidden from wearing silk and it is found in mummy tombs in Ancient Egypt. It is an intriguing natural dye form that reacts with oxygen and sunlight. DAY: DATE: TIMES: COST: TUTOR:

Cake Decorating SPECIALITY CLASS - WILTON CAKE DECORATING COURSE - INCLUDES CERTIFICATE Learn how to professional decorate cakes. Course 1: Decorating Basics. Your skilled certified instructor will teach you: how to make:, colour, flavour and understand, and know of the consistencies of professional buttercream icing. You will learn various piping techniques. The kit alone for this course costs $100.00 and is yours to keep, so this course is great value. Special Interest Groups HADDON QUILTERS GROUP ~ MONDAY NIGHTS This lovely group has been enjoying getting together and working on their projects. They also make quilts for the cancer unit in Ballarat. So come join in, enjoy the company and if you don’t know how to quilt then learn from the group. Enjoy some time to chat, sew and share your enjoyment of quilting. Join any time during the term; you will be made very welcome. Tea, coffee and bikkies provided. Well Being, Health & Exercise YOGA - SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS - ALL AGES YAY! ALANA’S BACK! After the birth of her newborn boy ‘Hunter’, Alana is back to teach yoga - and gently get fit with you as she guides you through the many health, mind and body benefits. Hatha style yoga is gentle movements to music and includes a relaxing meditation at the end of class. Stretch, strengthen, balance and unwind. Please bring your water, your yoga mat if you have one, and wear comfortable clothing. Alana has a few spare yoga mats if you don't have your own. Alana can cater to any fitness level from beginners to the more experienced. Music UKULELE FOR BEGINNERS - AFTER SCHOOL CLASS It’s fun, portable, cheap, and very musical! Let Bill show you how easy it is. You don’t have to have any musical skills. You will learn the basic techniques to get you quickly playing the ukulele: fingering chords, simple strumming patterns and some nifty tricks to make you sound like you an expert musician. Traditional as well as contemporary tunes will be used to explore these techniques. DATE: Starting February 25th DAYS: Mondays (other times may be available) TIMES: 4-5 pm COST: $15.00 a lesson - GST inclusive (6 lessons) You will need to bring your own instrument - if you don’t have one and want to learn just give us a call as we may be able to organise one or two. Maximum 10 students.

Children's Programs Little Woady’s - Swing, Sway, Laugh, Play Little Woady’s is an exciting program for pre-school aged children (0-5yrs) and their parent or carer to engage in positive experiences together that enhance the parent/child relationship.

Gift Vouchers ~ Make a great gift Gift vouchers are available for any amount and they will cover the tuition cost of any course we run at the House – a great gift idea for someone who has everything! Please enquire at the office. NB: Voucher doesn’t cover cost of materials fees.

Library The Community Learning Centre has a library of pre loved books, videos and DVD’s available to borrow or swap. Take some, leave some, or relax and have a read, while enjoying a coffee in the lounge area. We also have a collection of LARGE PRINT, and TALKING books, for those who are vision impaired or just prefer this type of book. Donations of good quality books and magazines are always gratefully accepted. Please note we are unable to accept educational texts or instruction manuals.

Playgroup No child is too young for Playgroup. Playgroup is for all children from 0-5years including babies. Haddon Playgroup is held on the second Wednesday in the month during the school terms.
