ONCE UPON A SHIRE The Golden Plains story is one of rich history and fascinating native heritage, and will be one uniquely retold by specialist artists and their incredible gifts. Once Upon A Shire will be a beautiful book of history, bringing together an author, illustrator, papermaker, bookbinder and aboriginal storyteller. These specially appointed creators are part of an exciting community arts program where Council has partnered with Regional Arts Victoria to engage artists to share their skills and spend time with local community groups, schools and kindergartens. The artists will work with community groups interested in learning more about a skill or craft. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn directly from amazingly talented and successful specialists before they focus their energy into Once Upon A Shire. For more information on artist availability, or if you are part of a group that would like to participate in a workshop, please contact Shannon Fielder, Council’s Arts and Culture Officer on 5220 7212 or sfielder@gplains.vic.gov.au.

August 2014 marked one hundred years since the commencement of the First World War (WWI). As part of the Victorian Government’s Anzac Centenary program (2014-2018) a free community roadshow - Victoria’s Journey of Remembrance - has been launched. This program encourages and supports Victorians across the state to learn more about their WWI history, to research their own personal connections, and to work within their local communities to commemorate the Anzac Centenary. The program will be delivered at secondary schools and also to community groups. If you require any further information, please contact a member of our Victoria’s Journey of Remembrance team on the website at journeyofremembrance@dpc.vic.gov.au or (03) 9651 2028(03) 9651 2028. (excerpt from the website: and media release at: http:// anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au/journeyofremembrance). Community Event Program The 90 minute community event is an extended version of the program and concludes with light refreshments and the opportunity to share stories with other members from your community. If your organisation or community group is interested in hosting the roadshow, please fill out the Community Event Expression of Interest Form. Please note, you must have a minimum of 50 attendees and provide a venue. Find the form on the website at: http://anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au/community-expression-interest-host/ Gallipoli Of all the events in Australia’s history, the battle at Gallipoli in World War I stands out as having defined the spirit of our nation. Although Gallipoli represents different things to different people, the story of the ANZACs who fought at Gallipoli is one of perseverance and courage in the face of failure and despair. After four months of training in Egypt, the ANZAC troops left for Gallipoli. At dawn on 25 April 1915 they landed at a beach now known as ANZAC Cove. The landing was nightmarish; the beach was at the bottom of a steep slope, meaning that the ANZACs had a tough and dangerous struggle to climb up the beach as the well-organised Turkish troops rained shells and gunfire down onto them from the top of the cliff. Here is the failure and the legend of the ANZACs: they had landed in the wrong position. They had meant to land on a flat beach where they would have had a better chance of reaching the shore to attack enemy troops. Instead, the ANZACs and the Turkish troops reached a deadlock, with neither able to take any new ground for months. The ANZACs began evacuating on 20 December 1915. The Australians had spent only eight months in Gallipoli, but in this short time had suffered 25,000 casualties, including 8700 deaths. The bravery and endurance of Australian troops in the face of death is what turned this horrific event into a legend that has helped to shape our country. (Australian Education Resources www.forteachersforstudents.com.au) Local Celebrations 2015 - Haddon The organisers of the 2015 Anzac Service at Haddon anticipate a great turn out for this morning. In preparation for this very special commemoration local Haddon identity, Chris Rigg has asked for any of our readers to submit details of any relatives that they may have of servicemen, or women in the area to please contact him so that they can be included in the Haddon service next year. Chris wants to talk to anyone about their proposed involvement and he can be contacted on: 5342-4800, or 0427-742-177. If he misses your call please leave a message with your contact number so as he can phone you back. And if you are a relative, close or distant, of any of the below known, local fallen in conflicts that Australia has been involved in, then please contact Chris as he would very much like you to be involved in the remembrance ceremony. 1914-18 ~ W.T. Beaton, Leslie Thomas Carland, W.M. Dunston, John Herbert Leopold Gilbert, James Leslie Greenbank, W. Hogan, A.P. Martin, George Victor Osborne, R. Sayers. 1939-45 ~ J. Nunn Vietnam ~ A. Flynn Chris and the Haddon Community Learning Centre are also seeking anyone who may have memorabilia from WW1 and who can supply anything to display on the day of the service at the Haddon Community Learning Centre, Haddon. It would be nice to have the centre have some displays for this special event for those who attend the service to view after the usual brunch after the service.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT THE SMYTHESDALE GARDENS? BBQ SHELTER The old shelter which was badly damaged by fire earlier this year has now been demolished. We are currently finalising plans with the Golden Plains Shire to enable us to build a new structure. The previous shelter was insured by the Shire and they have been very supportive of our desire to undertake the rebuilding ourselves. We hope to commence construction soon. THE CLIMBING TREE The large cypress tree near the BBQ shelter and other buildings is one of the best loved of all the trees in the Gardens. Well over 100 years old (possibly 150 years) it has been a favourite climbing and play feature for generations of visitors. Talk to any local resident of Smythesdale and they will tell stories of watching their children playing in this tree just as they and their parents and grandparents did. Sadly this wonderful old tree is reaching the end of its natural life and is becoming a danger to visitors. We need to face the reality that the climbing tree must come down. BUT WAIT! Because of its history we plan to retain most of the lower trunk structure and with the aid of a chainsaw sculptor convert it into a feature children’s play space. With a bit of imagination apparently you can see a ship! COMMEMORATIVE GARDEN BENCHES Many years ago the Progress Association organised for many older families in the Smythesdale area to be remembered through a collection of commemorative garden benches. These benches each have a plaque containing details of families who have contributed to the community life of the Gardens and the Smythesdale community over the years. These have been located around the Gardens usually under the many fine trees that were planted in the heyday of the Gardens. Again our history is meeting the modern day head on and many of these trees are also getting old and unsafe. So we are faced with the decision that most of these benches may need to be relocated to other areas of the Gardens. We have enormous respect for their significance to the families involved and none will ever be removed completely from the Gardens. If required we would relocate them to areas of the Gardens that would be safer and enable them to continue their contribution to the overall beauty and amenity of the Gardens. If you have any concerns about this issue or any other matters concerning the Gardens please do not hesitate to contact Bill Mac Neill on 5342 8752, or Brendan Kelly on 5342 8611.

ENROLMENT We take enrolments Tuesday to Friday between 10 am and 3.30 pm.

Welcome to the Haddon Community Learning Centre Term 4 Program Guide Cannot believe I am already having to book in somewhere for our Christmas breakup! Well the year is just flying by and here is the last term guide for 2014! So what do we have planned for term four? I am very excited to have Prue Simmons coming to conduct a workshop in ‘Japanese Saori Weaving’ this term. Prue has always had a fascination with Japanese culture after learning the language in school. It was whilst she was living in remote villages in Japan for a couple of years, she stumbled upon a town of traditional handicrafts in the mountains of Honshu. She fell in love with the expressive form of weaving known as “saori.”"It's almost like painting a picture but using threads instead of paints and the loom becomes the canvas," Prue says. Prue was featured on an ABC video. So if you want to join in one of her workshops you will have to move fast as places are limited to five. Prue will also be conducting a workshop for children as the craft is suitable for all ages. So phone to book your place now! We have some fantastic art classes with Janette again, from paper dresses, to mini sculptures! Also Nicole is continuing her beginners drawing classes that have been very popular in term three. If you ever wanted to learn to draw then Nicole is the one who can gently guide you. And don't forget we have a very special workshop with Pauline (aka the “Gadget Queen”) from “Quilters World,” Queensland coming for a four hour workshop of fabulous tips and tricks. So if you are a quilter, patch worker, or sewer, than come join in for this very special ‘one off event 'don't miss it! She will make it look so easy, and it is when you know how! There are too many class highlights to mention here; with some favourites returning, such as our great computer classes, to more “Zentangles!”Take your time to read through and call me if you have any questions. And don’t forget it is the last few months for free NBN training for those eligible, so make sure you don’t miss out on this opportunity before the year is finished. Have fun and happy learning and we look forward to seeing at the centre very soon. Cheers! “If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.” Thomas A.
