Welcome to Our Term 2, 2017 Course Guide Welcome to our Term 2 Course Guide. The year is passing by so quickly. I hope you have been enjoying the wonderful weather we have been experiencing this autumn. This term many of our popular classes will return with computers proving very popular once again and the Monday afternoon class is practically full already. We have some new courses in beginners sewing classes with Maree and over the cooler months that would be a great option to do. Or maybe you would like to learn how to crochet or knit ,then now is the perfect time of the year to do that with tutor Andrea to patiently guide you. We have been asked to have more pastel art classes, polymer clay jewellery and easy bread baking so I have included these workshops again this term due to those requests. The Monday night Haddon Quilters will be return in Term 2 after the school holidays, so if you love sewing, patchwork and quilting then why not come and join this friendly group who love to help, share their expertise and support each other with their projects. Our very popular courses "Introduction to Horticulture and Permaculture” “Introduction to Animals” will be available again this term with students reporting these are the best short courses they have done with wonderful knowledgeable trainers. So please book early to secure a place. This will probably be the last time the Introduction to Animals will be on this year as Indi is now super busy for the rest of the year and our next one will be held in Geelong. And don’t forget to keep up to date with the latest news on courses and events by checking our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/HaddonCommunityLearningCentre/ and our new website at http://haddonlearning.org.au/ Wishing everyone a happy and safe Easter break. And also we hope to see you after the ANZAC Day service for light refreshments. And we have some special activities in the open week from Tuesday 9th to Friday 12th May . The Haddon Quilters Groups will display some of their beautiful quilts. And on the Tuesday we will have an introduction session on researching your family history online with Andrea. You need to book for the history online session by calling us on 5342 7050. But come see us for a cuppa and a chat during that week. History of Crochet We call it crochet, and so do the French, Belgians, Italians and Spanishspeaking people. The skill is known as haken in Holland, haekling in Denmark, hekling in Norway and virkning in Sweden. Other forms of handwork - knitting, embroidery and weaving - can be dated far back in time, thanks to archaeological finds, written sources and pictorial representations of various kinds. But no one is quite sure when and where crochet got its start. The word comes from croc, or croche, the Middle French word for hook, and the Old Norse word for hook is krokr. According to American crochet expert Annie Potter, "The modem art of true crochet as we know it today was developed during the 16th century. It became known as 'crochet lace' in France and 'chain lace' in England." And, she tells us, in 1916 Walter Edmund Roth visited descendants of the Guiana Indians and found examples of true crochet. READING, WRITING & NUMERACY FOR ADULTS These classes will provide students with the opportunity to improve their literacy skills in a supportive environment. This allows many to become more engaged socially and develop their capacity to pursue further education, undertake volunteering opportunities, or gain employment. Some lessons will have particular learning objectives around a theme, for example writing a short email, or writing a story about their weekend. While writing is the key there will most often be the need to assist students with basic grammar, vocabulary and how to frame their work. Some students will pursue projects in keeping with their interests. Others will enjoy using special PC programs and even games that built their confidence and skill level. DATE: June 6th (7 sessions with break for holidays) DAY: Tuesdays ~ other days/dates will be available upon sufficient requests. TIME: 10.30 ~ 12 pm. FEES: $50 concession / $90 non-concession
