Joshua Frawley, is a local artist in Haddon who loves to create smiles with his art. “I have drawn for almost as long as I can remember, after I was given a ‘how to draw book’ by my grandmother, and I became hooked on creating my own pictures.,” says Joshua. “I honed my skill by copying anything I could lay my hands on, particularly Disney designs, before settling on my own style, which is my own form of graffiti/street art. According to my mother, I have always drawn and painted on any surface I could get my hands on. This includes my bedroom wall!” “In 2019 I completed my VCE, which led me on to studying a ‘Bachelor of Communication Design’ at Ballarat Federation University. As part of my VCE, I had to complete an assignment which involved designing and writing a
children’s book, and then having it published. The result was part of the Next Gen Exhibition at the Ballarat Art Gallery in March this year.”
“I have had some amazing opportunities so far in my career. My whole family are Collingwood ‘tragics,’ and it has been my absolute dream to design football boots for Chloe Molloy (Collingwood AFLW player) and for Josh Daicos from Collingwood. I have also designed shoes for Adam Ludewick, the mulletted finalist in this years “The
Voice”. “On top of that I entered and won a competition to design helmets for the Victorian Sheffield Shield cricket team to be worn in a game next year. The helmets will then be donated to raise money for a charity of the teams choice.” “I hope that through my work, I can inspire young people to believe that anything is possible if you are willing to put your mind to it. SENIORS MOVE IT GENTLY PROGRAM

At the end of last year the Haddon Community Learning Cente applied for a grant via Musculoskeletal Australia to reach out to and engage with older members of the local community and adjacent areas to help them understand the benefits of regular physical activity and in so doing improve their health and wellbeing. Musculoskeletal Australia (MSK) were successful in securing an Australian Federal government grant through the Sport Australia ‘Move it AUS- Better Ageing’ initiative. This ‘Active Neighbourhoods for Older Australians’ project aimed to:

Class members were ringing each other to check that all was well, share recipes, frustrations, and catching up on any news they had to share. The classes are specifically for people over the age of 65 and have consisted of walking the rail trail, some Pilates, chair exercises and Hatha Yoga. The classes are being conducted by Alana Rushton, and the exercises have particularly targeted strengthening muscles and balance. Most injuries in the older sector of the population are caused by falls, and they can take a lot of recovery time. These classes aim to strengthen and stabilise muscles to help to prevent falls from happening and also aid any recovery process. They also consist of teaching how to regulate breathing and meditation, which all help
sessions. The good news is that the centre will continue on with these sessions next year even though funding has finished much to the delight of the participants. They have reflected that they are looking forward to living a long and hopefully healthier life with what Alana has taught them. Term 1, 2021 HADDON RECREATION CENTRE CELEBRATES ITS NEW FLOOR The new floor at the Haddon Recreation Centre was officially opened on December 2nd with the new Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Helena Kirby joining Michaela Settle MP, Chairperson of the Haddon Recreation Centre Committee and member of the Haddon Badminton Club Adam Liversage, and Haddon Primary School Captains Georgina Draffin and Hamish Mansell, and their grade six peers for the cutting of the ribbon for the facility’s new floor. The project was funded by the Victorian Government, and cost $220,000. The new floor replaced the old, broken floor with a new spotted gum sprung floor, with a subfloor ventilation system and line-marking for a range of indoor sports from basketball to badminton, as well as the installation of a new scorers bench and basketball backboards, protective padding and floor matting.. The Golden Plains Shire Council also completed external drainage works and installed new roof sheeting, to ensure the longevity of the new floor. The Haddon Recreation Centre is a popular facility for local sport, recreational programs and services for the Haddon community. It is home to the Haddon Badminton Club, and students from Haddon Primary School regularly use the stadium.
LEARN MYCOLOGY AT HADDON COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE TERM 1 2020
The new stadium floor opens opportunities for local basketball and netball to grow with community groups also able to use the facility for a range of community activities. These works have revitalised the Haddon Recreation Centre and returned a valuable asset back to its full potential for the community’s benefit.
In term 1 the Haddon Community Learning Centre will be conducting a number of workshop events with MYCOmmunity Applied Mycology who are a community organisation that aims to increase awareness about the importance of fungi to the environment, human health and in sustainability. They also provide resources and training in various aspects of mycology and working with fungi in the community. MYCOmmunity is also involved in scientific research, particularly around ecology and conservation. Currently they are involved in the ‘Wild Fungi DNA’ project which is developing tests that citizenscientists can use to look for the DNA of rare and endangered fungi in the environment. They are also raising awareness about weedy and invasive fungi and ways to slow their spread. Workshops that will be held with the organisation in 2020 will include learning to grow mushrooms, using microscopes to identify fungi, a foray to learn to identify mushrooms in the field and foraging for edible mushrooms. We will also be running an extensive course on mycology, fungi and land management. POWER 2 PEDAL PROGRAM - COMING TO BALLARAT Power 2 Pedal is a new 4-week bike riding program for children aged 5 – 12 with autism. The program will offer participants the opportunity to learn to ride a bike in an inclusive and supportive environment. Orange ping pong bats Favolaschia calocera by SMcFish
Article by Ema Corro. The Orange Ping Pong Bats fungus or Favolaschia calocera is an invasive 'weedy' wood decomposing fungus that has been spreading rapidly in Australia since the 1990's. It is a threat to diversity of indigenous fungi as it has a broad range of substrate from twigs up to large logs and out competes native wood rotting fungi that help in nutrient cycling. It is able to live in the canopy of wetter forests so airborne spores can spread widely and away for paths. It has spread across much of southeast Queensland, southwest WA, and eastern Victoria. There are isolated patches in NSW and and northern Tasmania. Importantly there are National Parks and areas it so far hasn’t reached. For example have been no reported sightings in the Wombat Forest or the Grampians in Victoria. Hygiene to prevent spread into new conservation areas is important.

EASY SALMON AND CHEESE
POTATO SALAD
QUICHE
4 medium to large potatoes 3 hard boiled eggs 150g diced bacon 1-2 sticks celery Mayonnaise
1 x 225g can of Salmon 3 eggs, beaten 1 cup milk ¼ cup grated tasty cheese Parsley and chives, chopped 6 Cruskit biscuits Preheat oven to 200C (400F). Crush Cruskits finely, then add all other ingredients. Mix well. Pour into greased flan tin or dish. Bake 20 minutes, until golden brown. Crabmeat or shrimps may be substituted for salmon if desired.
DRESSINGS FRENCH DRESSING Pinch sugar Black Pepper and salt to taste 3 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon white vinegar Chopped parsley Put sugar salt and pepper into a bowl, beat oil in gradually, then beat in vinegar in slowly. Stir through parsley just before serving. SALAD DRESSING 1
2 eggs 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon dry mustard 3 tablespoons vinegar 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter Salt and pepper to taste 6 tablespoons milk Beat eggs well, add all the other ingredients with the milk last. Pour into a saucepan, stir over a moderate heat until thick. SALAD DRESSING 2 1 egg 2 tablespoons vinegar 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon butter 2 ½ tablespoon cold water Pepper and salt to taste 2 tablespoons sugar Beat egg, add remaining ingredients, mixing well. Stir over heat until thick. Will keep indefinitely in a screw top jar in the refrigerator.
Chop potatoes to about 2cm cubes, and cook in boiling water for approx. 10 minutes or until tender. Drain and cool. Roughly chop the hard boiled eggs and add to the potatoes. Cook the bacon until crisp. (This can be done in the microwave between sheets of paper towel. Takes about 3 minutes, but every 30 seconds stop and stir the bacon or else it will stick together). Add to potatoes and stir the ingredients through. Finely chop the celery and add. Mix through mayonnaise to taste. Recipe can also have other additions like corn, peas in place of the celery if preferred, capsicum, parsley, whatever suits your taste. LEMON TART 1 unbaked shortcrust pastry shell 1 tablespoon butter ¾ cup sugar 1 egg 1 lemon 2 tablespoons soft breadcrumbs 2 cooking apples Cream butter and sugar, add egg and beat well. Add grated rind and juice of lemon, breadcrumgs and finally peeled and finely chopped cooking apples. Pour into pastry case. Bake in hot oven (220C or 400F) for 10 minutes, reduce heat to moderate (180C or 320F) and cook for further 20 to 30 minutes. Serve warm or cold with cream. SNOWBALLS 30g gelatin 1 cup water 1 cup hot water 500g sugar Vanilla 1 egg white Coconut CHOCOLATE COATING 1 cup cocoa 2 tablespoons icing sugar Warm water Soak gelatin in 1 cup water for 5 minutes. Add hot water and sugar. Boil 20 minutes. When nearly cold, add vanilla and stiffly beaten egg whites. Beat until very stiff. Drop into holes made with an egg in deep dishes filled with flour. When set, lift out and cover with chocolate coating. Roll in coconut. Allow to set. CHOCOLATE COATING: Mix cocoa, icing sugar and warm water to make thin covering.

Food Safety Training now has two components: a series of questions to assess the student’s knowledge and an assessed workplace practical skills assignment. The workplace assignment is completed on the job, in a real or simulated workplace environment, and observed by a suitably qualified 3rd party observer. CHEESEMAKING AT HOME Cheesemaking is a simple skill anyone can learn. Labneh, Ricotta, Camembert and Halloumi are easy to make in your own home. It only takes a little knowledge to become a master and the superior handmade flavour will impress anyone. Each participant will take three cheeses home as well as recipes and your own cheese mould so you can make many more in the future. You will never waste yoghurt again once you know how to make Labneh. Ricotta can be made in five minutes and is delicious drizzled with honey. Age your Camembert in your own environment to create a cheese that is as unique as yourself. Once you eat Halloumi crafted with your own hands you will never bother with the rubbery, inferior ones from the supermarket again. A light lunch of spanakopita and baked camembert will be provided and we will taste test ricotta and halloumi once it’s freshly made. Please bring with you - 3-4 containers to take your cheeses home and an apron and a cooler bag if the weather is warm. (Some spares will be available if required). Because of the constraints of social distancing due to COVID-19, and in the interests of public safety, we have to adopt a cap on attendees. The places will be allocated on a ‘first come’, ‘first served‘ basis and bookings are essential. These will need to be confirmed by the previous Tuesday at 1.00pm. Our first meal back is planned to be February 18th, and will continue to be on the 3rd Thursday of the month. The cost will be $12.00 per person. Summer Sundays are Back in Ballarat
in 2021 The City of Ballarat’s popular Summer Sundays is back in 2021 with an awesome line up of artists and a very different format.Live and local, over three weekends in January, Summer Sundays is partnering with three of Ballarat’s major attractions, Sovereign Hill, Kryal Castle and the Ballarat Wildlife Park to deliver the popular live music events. Each Summer Sunday concert will be live streamed via @summersundaysballarat Facebook page showcasing Ballarat’s attractions and promoting Ballarat as a perfect Summer destination to an expanded audience. Featuring headline acts including Clare Bowditch, Ella Hooper and the Ross Wilson Trio, along with local artists, the 2021 program will appeal to a broad audience. It’s not often jazz, pop and rock concerts are presented in the company of kangaroos and koalas, jousting knights or amidst the hustle and bustle of an 1850s township! Deputy Mayor, Cr Amy Johnson says the pairing of Summer Sundays concerts with Ballarat’s local attractions is part of the City’s concerted approach to encourage people to visit and support Ballarat businesses this Summer. "Moving the event from the Ballarat Botanical Gardens allows the artists to perform in a controlled COVID-safe environment," she said. Music played a big role on the goldfields and Sovereign Hill is delighted to be hosting one of three Summer Sunday concerts. “We're energised by that same rebellious spirit and innovative vision of locals that founded Sovereign Hill 50 years ago,” Mark Hemetsberger, Head of Marketing and Design said of the different format this year. Haddon Community Learning Centre New Seating Installed Thanks to David Collins, the Golden Plains Shire Coordinator Environment & Sustainability officer the centre has had some much needed garden works at the entrance to the
centre and a new bench seat and a table and seats added as well. More works have been undertaken at the rear and other additions are in the works including extra seating that will be funded by the Learning Centre. Hopefully it in the early part of the new year these areas will be much more inviting and useful. We cannot wait!
