Welcome to Our Term 1, 2018 Course Guide The coming break will be welcome to most people after a hectic 12 months —time to catch one’s breath and make some plans for the year ahead. If you (or a family member) are looking to improve your employability skills, we have some great courses to consider in 2018. We also have some exciting new courses for anyone who is wanting try something different in the way of leisure activities or hobbies, as well as some repeat courses that proved very popular in 2017.

HOW TO ENROL  In person at the Haddon Community Learning Centre office 396

The hospitality industry is a big employer in the Central Highlands region. Consequently, we’ve found that our Café Skills course has proved invaluable to local people who want to gain the skills and expertise needed to work in the sector. The next course starts on Wednesday March 7th and runs for three weeks. In 2018 we’ve added an extra day (to be agreed) where participants will be able to concentrate solely on getting an insight and some hands-on experience in what it takes to be a barista. You can find out more on page 15 of the Herald.

 Fees become due at the time of booking. Places will not be held

The ability to use technology confidently and efficiently is a vital employment skills these days, as well as having become so important in communicating between family and friends. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by smartphones, iPads and technology generally, we can help, so check out our computer courses on page 13. An exciting new offering is a weekend of Sustainable Agriculture workshops on March 24th and 25th. If you have completed Horticulture and Permaculture course, this weekend will help you move to the next level. The workshops will teach you how to integrate three main objectives— a healthy environment, economic profitability, and social and economic equity—into your work. I’m also pleased to announce a special quilting workshop with guest tutor Yan Pring, the queen of colour herself. Over two days (April 23rd and 24th), Yan will help you design your own quilt to suit either king, queen, or single bed sizes, runners or tablecloths. We need 12 students for this workshop to proceed so please book early. And finally, I’d like to draw your attention to a special day in Term 2—not the start of the year by any means but I wanted to give plenty of advance notice so artistic readers can plan to attend. The pilot “Let’s Make Art “ workshops teaching coiling and pencil drawing proved so popular, I’m happy to announce that a full program of workshops is scheduled for May 2018. Marita Reynolds will be conducting another pencil drawing workshop, concentrating on drawing a realistic chook this time. The other three workshops will cover book making, paper making and watercolour painting—please see page 5 for more information about the workshops and page 4 for a profile of Marita and fellow workshop tutor Lyn Dickson. Remember, you can keep up to date with the latest news on courses and events by checking our Facebook page and website. Season’s Greetings and a safe and happy New Year to you all.

Cheers, Joan, Manager
