HADDON COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES We had a great turnout to the special free arts day at the centre provided with funds from the Golden Plains Shire. In the morning sessions the children designed and made bowls and 3D figures. The bowls were stamped and aren’t they just fantastic! In the afternoon the session consisted of designing and drawing with waxed crayons that were then ironed on to pillowcases. All in all a great day of fun and inspiration!

The Ballarat Environment Network is holding a planting activity at the Haddon Racecourse Reserve, Racecourse Road, Haddon, on Sunday 27 th July 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of National Tree Day activities. Everyone is welcome to come along. The Network is particularly keen to have Haddon residents involved with the care of the reserve, especially now that there is something worth looking after. Over the past 10 years, the Network and supporters have been transforming the reserve from a gorse-infested nightmare into a really pleasant place to visit. Planting indigenous plants has been a key part of the work. Last year more than 200 trees were planted along the western boundary and despite the horrendously dry and hot summer conditions, close to 80% have survived and are growing very well (supplementary watering got them through the summer). Species such as the silver banksia that were removed during the goldrush provide excellent habitat for important species such as the striated field wren. Waterbirds are always plentiful on the old goldmining dam and the plains brolga is often seen in the reserve at this time of year - a pair was resident in the reserve for some months during late 2013 and early 2014. All plants and equipment will be supplied. Come warmly and ruggedly attired for the outdoors, with rainproof clothing handy. Solid and waterproof footware is essential and good, solid, hardwearing gloves too, although we will have a supply available. Bring water; again, we will have a supply but it’s always good to have your own. The reserve is little more than a kilometre from the Haddon roundabout and is located on the northern side of Racecourse Road. The small car park accommodates 4 cars; if we need more room (we hope so!), cars should be able to park inside the reserve. Cape Clear 150th School Reunion In 2015 Cape Clear PS will be celebrating 150 years of education. HADDON PRIMARY NEWS Congratulations to all grade 5/6 students who represented Haddon Primary School in the ‘Football Lightning Premiership.’ The day was a big success for both the boys and girls teams. The boy’s team won 2 out of their 3 matches, unfortunately just missing out on making it through to the semi-finals in a very competitive division. And the girls’ team completed a very impressive and successful day, also winning 2 out of their 3 matches and qualifying for the semi-finals. In convincing fashion the girl’s team won their semi-final and went on to play in the grand final against ‘Ballarat Grammar.” Scores were level up to half time, but in a very close finish the girls’ lost by 7 points to finish runner up in their division. Well done to all the students who showed tremendous leadership on and off field on the day.

CLASSROOM LIBRARIES DONATIONS OF BOOKS Haddon Primary is seeking donations of books for their classroom libraries. They would like parents to search their bookshelves at home for good quality books that their children have moved on from, but are too good to throw away. Picture story books, paper back, fiction, non fiction suitable for students in years Prep -6. Older siblings in the family may longer be reading the books they once loved and these can now be enjoyed by the next generation of book lovers. All donations can be left in the box in the ELC or on the table outside Ms Carrigan’s office.

Are You A Descendant of a WWI Veteran? Between 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. The Anzac Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians. The First World War helped define us as a people and as a nation. During the Anzac Centenary we will remember not only the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women. The Anzac Centenary Program encompasses all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved. The Program aims to give all Australians the opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have worn our nation’s uniform, including the more than 102,000 who have made the supreme sacrifice. It also aims to encourage all Australians to reflect upon and learn more about Australia’s military history, its costs and its impacts on our nation. Excerpt from the website: http://www.anzaccentenary.gov.au/ This year the turnout for the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WW1 of the local people at the Memorial Park at Haddon showed that the people of the area appreciate the sacrifice of the men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives for us so that we may live in a free Australia. The organisers of the 2015 Anzac Service at Haddon anticipate a greater turn out for that service. In preparation for this very special commemoration local Haddon identity Chris Rigg has asked us to relay a message to any of our readers to submit any details of any relatives that they may have of servicemen, or women in the area to please conta ct him so that they can be included in the Haddon service next year. Chris wants to apologise for having too much on his mind at the ANZAC Day service to remember the names of those who came up to talk to him about their proposed involvement in the service next year, and to please phone him on 5342-4800 or 0427-742-177 so as he can record the names and details. If he misses your call please leave a message with your contact number so as he can phone you back. Also the names of the known local fallen in the conflicts that Australia has been involved in are as follows: 1914-18 ~ W.T. Beaton, Leslie Thomas Carland, W.M. Flynn If you are a relative, close or distant, of any of the above fallen, a request is made to you to contact Chris RIGG on 5342 4800 so that you may be involved in the remembrance ceremony April 2015. Chris and the Haddon Community Learning Centre are also seeking anyone who may have memorabilia from WW1 and who can supply anything to display on the day of the service at the Haddon Community Learning Centre, Haddon. It would be nice to have the centre have some displays for this special event for those who attend the service to view after the usual brunch.

HADDON PRIMARY 25TH ANNIVERSARY In 2015, Haddon Primary School will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the new school building. Planning is in the very early stages and we would love to hear from anyone who might be willing to help in the preparations for the 25 year celebration. All members of our community, past and present, are invited to form an events group which will focus on collecting, collating and displaying memorabilia from both the ‘old school’, as well as the current Haddon Primary School 25 year history. The group in consultation with the staff and school council will also decide on the date for the back to Haddon Primary School 25 year celebration and the format of the festivities. We would also like to track down memorabilia from school life over the years – old photos, books, uniforms, sports trophies etc – to be used in a ‘ 25 years in the new building display’ at the school. If you have any items that might be of interest, photos of the ‘walk down to the new school’, photos of the old school please let us know. We are happy to scan photos while you wait so they can be returned directly to you. A meeting will be held on August 27 at 2pm in the Carpet area of the Haddon Recreation to start the initial planning of the event. Welcome to the Haddon Community Learning Centre Term 3 Program Guide Term 3 is almost upon us; hard to believe isn’t it? So here we are again welcoming new readers to the program and returning regulars ! I hope you will be able to find something to tempt you into the centre for we have another jammed packed program of activities that I hope you will find something to enjoy. We have some new courses and workshops on offer and of course some old favourites returning, and remember if you have an idea for a course or workshop then let me know and I may be able to offer it next term. Our special class for permaculture is finally ready to start on Fridays from July 11th and it is not too late to book into this very special offering. The course has been a year in planning. It is a rare opportunity to learn from the experts, so if you have been thinking about it, don’t delay and call us now to secure your place. And take a look at the NBN courses because if you are a business/ group/organisation you can have 4 hours training for free but this funding is slated to finish in August so you have to call me now to take advantage of this great opportunity before it is too late! You can have 4 hours private mentoring if you prefer, or be part of a group for longer sessions; I just need to have a minimum of four people from differing groups/business book in to a class for the group sessions to proceed. DON’T LEAVE IT TILL IT IS TOO LATE! Some of the other exciting new courses this term are: construction induction white card certificate and a hospitality package (a great way to get to do five courses at once; a digital bookkeeping course a great introduction to floristry (great price!). For a more relaxing offering try the wonderful ‘Zentangle’ introduction or the chocolate delight r bake croissants and Danish worskshops or learn how to sew or draw! I think there is something for everyone!

Places will not be held unless fees are paid or a deposit received and payment plan arranged.   Refunds cannot be given once a class has commenced or at least 5 business days notice is provided as we are committed to pay course costs.   Refunds will be given if the class is cancelled for any reason.   Prospective students should be aware that some courses/ activities may not proceed if there are insufficient numbers to cover operational costs.   Concession rates apply where indicated and only on presentation of a current concession card.   Notification will be given only when classes are cancelled or rescheduled. While all effort is made to proceed with advertised activities it is not always possible if enrolments do not generate the funds required to cover the costs of tutors and room hire. ANAPHYLAXIS

Do you require upgrades or need to undergo first aid training for your job? Then we are conducting several courses in first aid at the centre this term. You can undertake all necessary training required in a one day session or undertake separately those sessions you need to update. Sessions available include:

This course is designed to provide the knowledge to identify Anaphylactic Shock and the skills to manage an emergency with the use of an adrenaline Auto-Injector. The use of risk assessment tools and the development of risk minimisation strategies are explored. This course is needed for those working in Children’s Services and Education. Details of classes and individual prices: APPLY FIRST AID CERTIFICATE This course covers all the necessary skills & knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(ies), the incident & other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. This unit incorporates the content of units HLTCPR201B Perform CPR and HLTFA201B Provide basic emergency life support. Please note we need a minimum of 10 students for this course to proceed. PERFORM CPR - HLTCPR211A This course covers all of the skills and knowledge required to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. At the successful completion of this course participants will be issued with a statement of attainment valid for 1 year. Course 2.5 hours. ASTHMA This accredited course is designed for you to acquire competency in the risk assessment and management of asthma emergency in the workplace or home. The knowledge and skills will enable you to minimise the occurrence and manage an asthma attack which in turn will sustain life and minimise the consequences until professional help arrives. FOOD SAFETY LEVEL I CERTIFICATE -SITXOHS002A Accredited course fulfils the requirements for those needing this qualification for their workplace or for their role as a volunteer. FOOD HANDLERS ONLINE COURSE You can alternatively do your certificate online and start anytime and also have the convenience of finishing it in your own time. This course can be done online or by correspondence delivered by the registered training organisation, “CFT International.” You print out your qualification certificate when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. Cost online - $95.00.

CONSTRUCTION INDUCTION WHITE CARD (OH&S) All persons carrying out any type of work on a construction site, including, but not restricted to builders, supervisors, trades, apprentices, labourers, cleaners, engineers, architects, surveyors, sales persons entering buildings still under construction and even schoolchildren on work experience must have a “Construction Induction card” to work onsite. $27.00 Fee inclusive in course cost will cover the Worksafe registration fee. Each Participant must provide Photo ID, Please enquire for the brochure which outlines documents that can be used as proof of identity. DUAL CERTIFICATE II IN AGED CARE & HOME & COMMUNITY CARE You can work in the growing health and aged care field with this nationally recognised dual qualification. CHC30212 Certificate III in Aged Care CHC30312 Certificate III Home and Community Care There is an ever-increasing demand for employees to enter the aged care sector. Certificate III in Aged Care / HACC will be run over a minimum of twenty six weeks consisting of two days per week training. A work placement towards the end of this period will be sourced and facilitated by Advanced Career Training. This course provides participants with a fantastic opportunity to gain two nationally accredited qualifications in one, as well as hands on work experience that will support them in gaining the career in the aged care and home & community care industry. Farming in the 21st Century Pyrenees farmers attended the 'Farming in the 21st Century' workshop in February 2014. The workshop was facilitated by technology guru Chris Elliott and covered the applications and technology used to manage farms more efficiently. He also introduced farmers to the Twitter site 'AgChatOZ'. The presentation included the 'DEPI Crop Disease' application with explanation on how this app was created. The app provides quick access to current disease resistance ratings and an extensive disease image library to assist farmers with these sometimes troubling times. PHOTO PRINTS AND DRAWING Using your photos, computer photo editing, transfer printing and traditional drawing materials you will create a wonderful piece of art!. CRAFTS PAPERCRAFTS WITH KAZ On thee first Friday in the month ‘Craft Club’ is held, Come join these fantastic workshops & find your inner creative goddess! SPECIAL QUARTERLY CRAFTERNOONS Our popular ‘crafternoons’ are back for this year. Special regular quarterly ‘crafternoons’ will be held on Sundays throughout the year. The next one is Sunday July 20th Lunch is served from noon - with delicious varieties of pancakes cooked by Vince the ‘Pancake King.’ Crafting starts from 1pm. HISTORY OF ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER TEXTILES Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make a variety of objects from animal and plant fibres. Their skills in basket weaving, knotting and utilising animal skins are evidenced in everyday tools such as baskets for collecting food, nets for fishing and skin cloaks for warmth. They also make ceremonial items such as headgear.

Little Woady’s is a program for preschool aged children and their parent or carer to engage in positive experiences together that enhance the parent/child relationship. LIBRARY The Community Learning Centre has a library of pre loved books, videos and DVD’s available to borrow or swap. Take some, leave some, or relax and have a read, while enjoying a coffee in the lounge area. We also have a collection of LARGE PRINT TALKING books, for those who are vision impaired or just prefer this type of book. Donations of good quality books and magazines are always gratefully accepted. Please note we are unable to accept educational texts or instruction manuals.
