Une histoire authentique, telle qu'elle est retracée dans les lettres de la famille Crenneville N INTÉRÊT considérable s'est depuis longtemps développé autour de Caroline Esterházy, la « certaine étoile » de Schubert, sa « flamme poétique » 1. De nombreux romans ont extrapolé sur la nature réelle de son rôle dans la vie de Schubert et, en particulier, sur les causes de l'échec désastreux de son mariage, en 1844, à Carl Folliot de Crenneville. Le dernier ouvrage de ce type, Franz Schuberts Liebe. Eine Entdeckung, par Robert Widl (publié en 1990), raconte comment Caroline se serait enfuie de chez Carl au cours de sa nuit de noce et, à la consternation de sa mère Rosine, serait retournée à Zseliz 2. La réalité, dépassant les fictions de cet ordre, est restée cachée dans les documents privés du frère de Carl, Franz Folliot de Crenneville (1815-1888). Ces documents, d'une grande importance au point de vue politique (Franz servit pendant plusieurs années l'empereur François-Joseph en qualité d'adjudant-général et de grand chambellan) sont conservés dans la Haus-, Hof-und Staatsarchiv de Vienne. Ils n'ont été rendus librement accessibles au public qu'en 1987. Ma découverte, parmi ces documents, de lettres révélant la nature du « secret » du mariage raté de Caroline a été annoncée dans le numéro de juin 1993 de Schubert durch die Brille 3. Ces lettres connaissent à présent leur première publication dans les Cahiers F. Schubert. L'histoire du mariage de Caroline se trouve racontée dans la correspondance privée entre Franz Crenneville et sa fiancée, Herminie Chotek de Chotkowa et Wognin (1815-1882). Leur correspondance débute dans les premiers mois de 1844, alors que Franz était au service de l'empereur Ferdinand I er au palais de Schoenbrunn, à Vienne, en tant que chambellan, et qu'Herminie résidait sur le domaine de sa mère, Henriette Chotek, née Brunswick (1787-1857), à Korompa, en Hongrie. Leur mariage fut célébré à Korompa le 14 mai 1844, une semaine après que le frère aîné de Franz, Carl (1811-1873), épousa Caroline Esterházy (1805-1851), le 8 mai 1844 à Presbourg. Il était naturel, compte tenu des liens familiaux et de l'étroite proximité dans le temps des deux cérémonies, que Franz et Herminie ressentissent un vif intérêt pour la destinée conjugale du couple le plus âgé.
