ABSTRACT: Allelopathy is the term used to define any process involving secondary metabolites produced by plants and microorganisms that influence growth and development of agrobiological systems. Currently, it is sought to find allelochemicals of interest and know how to apply them in bio-herbicides to combat weeds. In this study, the effects of the crude leaf extract and fractions of Machaerium hirtum (Vell.) Stellfeld were analyzed on Euphorbia heterophylla L. (wild poinsettia) and Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O’Donell (morning glory), as well as the occurrence of morphoanatomical changes. For this, 0.04 g of the crude extract and fractions were solubilized and diluted (50 mL) to concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g L-1 (m/v). Initial growth tests were performed on Petri dishes containing two paper sheets and seedlings of weed species with the respective treatments, being maintained in a germination chamber for 48 hours at 25 oC. Distilled water was used as a control. Shoot ...

Weeds pose a problem, infesting areas and imposing competition and harvesting difficulties in agricultural systems. Studies that provide the use of alternative methods for weed control, in order to minimize negative impacts on the environment, have intensified. Native flora represents a source of unexplored metabolites with multiple applications, such as bioherbicides. Therefore, we aimed to carry out a preliminary phytochemical analysis of crude extracts and fractions of Miconia auricoma and M. ligustroides and to evaluate these and the isolated metabolites phytotoxicity on the growth of the target species. The growth bioassays were conducted with Petri dishes with lettuce, morning glory, and sourgrass seeds incubated in germination chambers. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, isolated myricetin, and a mixture of quercetin and myricetin. The results showed that seedling growth was affected in a dose-dependent manner, with the root most affected and the seed...

The acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL) are compounds used in intercellular chemical signaling processes by Gram-negative bacteria in a phenomenon known as quorum-sensing. This process makes the microorganisms able to sense and respond to stimuli of individuals of the same species, or even cause physiological changes in the surrounding bacterial populations. In recent years, there is a growing interest in the effect that these compounds might have on higher organisms, such as inter-kingdoms communication mechanisms or physiological and morphological changes in host. In this regard, the study of the effects of these metabolites in plants has gained particular attention. Recently, it was shown that N-(3-oxo-octanoyl)-HL is present in the extract obtained from the leaves and stalks of sugarcane cultivated in Brazil, and that this compound can stimulate the growth of roots and shoots of the plant at low concentrations. Interestingly, it was found that both enantiomers (R) and (S) can acceler...

The phytochemical study of the leaves, roots, and flowers of Palicourea rigida led to the isolation of the triterpenes betulinic acid (1) and lupeol (2), the diterpene phytol (3), and the iridoid glycosides sweroside (4) and secoxyloganin (5). These compounds were identified using NMR 1H and 13C and comparing the spectra with published data. We studied the antiedematogenic activity of crude extracts from the organs, and of different fractions, in mice and found that the n-hexane fraction of the leaf extract significantly inhibited the ear edema resulting from croton oil administration. The crude extract from leaves was not acutely toxic to the mice.

Allelopathy is analyzed as an alternative to herbicides due to the inhibitory or beneficent activities of its compounds with other organisms. Current paper discusses the effects of Aeschynomene fluminensis Vell. fractions on cultivated plant species, Lactuca sativa L. and Glycine max (L.) Merril, and on weeds, Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O’Donnel and Digitaria insularis (L.) Fedde. Aqueous fractions at 0.80; 0.40; 0.20 and 0.10 mg mL-1 concentrations were employed for initial growth tests. Seeds were pre-germinated in distilled water and transferred to petri plates with separate fractions at different concentrations. Plates were maintained for 48 h in a germination chamber at 25°C for L. sativa and I. grandifolia and at 30°C for G.max and D. insularis. The length of hypocotyl (LH) and root (LR) was measured and LR and foliar length (LF) were taken for D. insularis seedlings. Parameters were employed to calculated inhibition percentage. Plants with morphological changes were fixed a...

Abstract Orchidaceae are one of the largest families of flowering plants. In this work, the first phytochemical study of the non-flowering parts of the South American species Stanhopea lietzei (Regel) Schltr. is reported. It led to the isolation of nine compounds, including the rare dimeric compound 2,2′,7,7′-tetramethoxy-4,4′,6,6′-tetrahydroxy-(1,1′)-biphenanthrene (1). This compound was tested for the first time against HeLa human cancer cells, with IC50 16.9 ± 0.9 μg/mL. Biological assays against neotropical parasites, virus and other human cancer cell lines are also reported. Finally, the relevance of biphenanthrenes, flavonoids, and C-glycosylated phenolic compounds for chemophenetics relationships within neotropical species of the Cymbidieae tribe and Oncidiinae, Maxillariinae, Cyrtopodiinae and Stanhopeinae subtribes was also discussed.
