moreAbstract A large plate like structures can undergo some severe ruptures because of the stress created by the mass and shape. Ruptures are regularly started by surface cracks. For this aim, it is important to evaluate brutality of the noticeable cracks, by constant nondestructive assessments. In this work, a novel method for surface crack depth estimation based on Rayleigh waves by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) is introduced. The method is based on a position-time (P-T) graph for direct transmitted Rayleigh waves between fixed transmitter and uniformly movable receiver on surface of the specimen. The process is repeated on different center frequencies both in the experiment as well as in two-dimensional finite element method simulation on steel plates. One of the specimens was without crack while the other one holds surface cracks with the depth ranging from 3–6 mm. Results obtained from simulation and experiment were significant to estimate crack depth with a maximum error of 7.5%.

moreBaiji thermal station supplied by heavy fuel HFO from Baiji refinery, while the gas station is operated by heavy fuel HFO and light fuel LFO, the first unit operates using LFO, the third unit operates using HFO. The results showed that the specific fuel consumption is reduced by rising the load, when the load is reduced to 20Mw s.f.c almost 0.765m3/Mw.hr this rate start to fall to become 0.35m3/Mw.hr when the unit operate near its maximum capacity for LFO, while the heavy fuel increases by 15% for the same number above. It’s correct that LFO is good but it is expensive which costs 1000$ per imported ton , in order to cover the load of 8000Mw for one year itcosts 1.92E+10$ for imported LFO ,9.6E+10$ for the local LFO, and 2.8E+9$ for HFO, the difference is obvious which is ten times the total cost. Also the studied performance of the gas units showed that the net is experience from a downturn of frequency along 24hr except in the let hours at night, while the allowed frequency is 50...

moreBackground Pain, inflammation and fever are serious conditions that are associated with various disease conditions. In modern medicine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids together with corticosteroids have been considered to manage algesia and inflammation-related conditions. However, these conventional drugs are not affordable, not readily available, particularly to people living in rural areas in developing nations. Besides, they are associated with undesirable pharmacological actions. Generally, medicinal plants have been employed to manage various ailments. In Northern-Nigeria, the leaves of Culcasia angolensis (Araceae) are used traditionally to manage pain, fever and inflammation. However, scientific data validating its folkloric claim in treating pain and inflammatory-related abnormalities are not available. Hence, the current study aims to validate the antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic potentials of the methanol leaf extract of Culcasia ...

moreThis paper investigates the short-run and long-run relationships between three main macroeconomic variables in Oman using the Johansen multivariate co-integration techniques as well as the stationary VAR for the period between 1971 and 2013. The results indicate that there is a long-run relationship between these three macroeconomic variables; the real GDP, the real government expenditure and the real oil revenues. The estimated coefficients for the real oil revenues and the real government expenditure are correctly signed and statistically significant at 5% level. Both variables depict positive relationship with GDP which are 0.672 and 0.872 respectively. The impulse response functions and the variance decomposition from the stationary VAR show that these variables are very important to the short-run dynamics of the Omani economy. Overall, government expenditure appears to be the main source for economic growth in long-run, and in short run variations in government expenditure are ...

moreThis paper investigates whether a country’s level of income matters to the effectiveness of institutions in fostering economic growth. The institutional variables are represented by democracy, corruption levels, and armed conflicts. The countries in the data-set are divided into high-, middle- and low-income countries based on the World Bank criteria. The overall results indicate that institutional variables have offsetting effects on economic growth. The performance of these variables appears to have been influenced by the countries’ level of income. Labour, capital and human capital are found to be positive and significant variables for economic growth, irrespective of whether the countries are in high-, middle- and low-income groups. On the contrary, corruption affects GDP negatively in high- and middle-income groups, but positive, although insignificant in low-income countries. Democracy has a mixed effect on economic growth and largely negative in high- and low-income countries...

moreThis study tries to discuss the relationship between sectoral developments and economic growth. To be more specific, by examining a panel of the regional data in Indonesia (province level) over the 26 years time span (1983-2009). This study investigate whether the specialization in certain sector facilitates economic growth and whether the specialization (in a particular sector) contributes to regional economic development. This study finds that specialization in sectors such as agriculture and services has a negative impact on economic growth. However, specialization in manufacturing has a positive effect on economic growth in Indonesia. Furthermore, local specialization in economic sectors has different effects. Local specialization in agriculture and services sector will harm regional development. On the other hand, local specialization in manufacture has positive impact to economic growth. Our findings suggest that for a balanced regional development, the policy authority should...

moreETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The plant Combretum hypopilinum Diels (Combretaceae) is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea and other diseases in Africa. Previously, the antidiarrhoeal activity of its methanol leaf extract was reported. However, the mechanism(s) responsible for this activity is yet to be evaluated. AIM This study aimed to elucidate the possible mechanism(s) of antidiarrhoeal activity of methanol leaf extract of Combretum hypopilinum (MECH) in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Phytochemical screening and acute toxicity study were conducted according to standard methods. Adult mice were orally (p.o) administered distilled water (10 ml/kg), MECH (1,000 mg/kg) and loperamide (5mg/kg). The probable mechanisms of antidiarrhoeal activity of MECH were investigated following pretreatment with naloxone (2 mg/kg, subcutaneously), prazosin (1 mg/kg, s.c), yohimbine (2 mg/kg, intraperitoneally), propranolol (1 mg/kg, i.p), pilocarpine (1 mg/kg, s.c) and isosorbide dinitrate (150 mg/kg, p.o) 30 minutes before administration of MECH (1,000 mg/kg). The mice were then subjected to castor oil-induced intestinal motility test. RESULTS The oral median lethal dose (LD50) of MECH was found to be higher than 5,000 mg/kg. There were significant (p<0.05) decrease in the charcoal movement in the mice treated with the MECH (1,000 mg/kg) and loperamide (5 mg/kg). The pretreatment of the mice with naloxone, prazosin and propranolol each significantly (p<0.05) reversed the antidiarrhoeal activity produced by MECH. CONCLUSION The results obtained in this study suggest the probable involvement of opioidergic and (α1 and β)-adrenergic systems in the antidiarrhoeal activity of the methanol leaf extract of Combretum hypopilinum.

moreThe aim of the present study was to assess the effects of a hyperlipidic diet set before puberty in male Wistar rats' gonadal weights and testicular functions. Males rats were used for the study, they were randomly distributed into 2 groups: Control Group (CG: standard diet (normolipidemic) and the second: Intervention Group (IG: hyperlipidemic diet), after 7 days of experimentation , 3 rats were sacrificed per week, blood samples were collected and level of HDL, LDL and triglyceride were analyzed. A significant reduction (p<0.05) in testicular weight in the control group was observed compared with the hyperlipidic diet group, triglyceride levels showed a consistent change over the weeks of the study, HDL levels showed a consistent change during the 5 weeks of the study, Photomicraphie of the testicles of Wistar rats in the hyperlipid diet group for the first week showed Sertoli cell hyper-plasia ,during the second week microscopic examination showed significant testicular hypertrophy the microscopic examination during the fifth week showed hyperplasia of the seminal vesicle characterized by an increase in the number of glandular epithelial cells. The proliferating epithelium may form papillary structures with supporting stroma and with extension into the glandular lumen and total absence of sperm cells. Obesity is associated with many metabolic abnormalities. It has been found that these metabolic abnormalities induce disorders of spermatogenesis. Our results show that the hyperlipidic diet affects the gonads significantly with hypertrophic testes, the presence of hyperplastic seminiferous tubes, as well as a fine basement membrane.

moreThis article describes the dataset for the elucidation of the possible mechanisms of antidiarrhoeal actions of methanol leaves extract of Combretum hypopilinum (Diels) Combretaceae in mice. The plant has been used in traditional medicine to treat diarrhoea in Nigeria and other African countries. We introduce the data for the antidiarrhoeal activity of the methanol leaf extract of Combretum hypopilinum at 1,000 mg/kg investigated using charcoal meal test in mice with loperamide (5 mg/kg) as the standard antidiarrhoeal agent. To elucidate the possible mechanisms of its antidiarrhoeal action, naloxone (2 mg/kg), prazosin (1 mg/kg), yohimbine (2 mg/kg), propranolol (1 mg/kg), pilocarpine (1 mg/kg) and isosorbide dinitrate (150 mg/kg) were separately administered to different groups of mice 30 minutes before administration of the extract. Each mouse was dissected using dissecting set, and the small intestine was immediately removed from pylorus to caecum, placed lengthwise on moist filter paper and measured the distance travelled by charcoal relative to the length of the intestine using a calibrated ruler in centimetre. Besides, the peristaltic index and inhibition of charcoal movement of each animal were calculated and recorded. The methods for the data collection is similar to the one used to investigate the possible pathways involved in the antidiarrhoeal action of Combretum hypopilinum in mice in the research article by Ahmad et al. (2020) “Mechanisms of Antidiarrhoeal Activity of Methanol Leaf Extract of Combretum hypopilinum Diels (Combretaceae): Involvement of Opioidergic and (α1 and β)-Adrenergic Pathways” (
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jep.2020.113750) [1]. Therefore, this datasets could form a basis for in-depth research to elucidate further the pharmacological properties of the plant Combretum hypopilinum and its bioactive compounds to develop standardized herbal product and novel compound for management of diarrhoea. It could also be instrumental for evaluating the plant's pharmacological potentials using other computational-based and artificial intelligence approaches, including predictive modelling and simulation.

moreExploring the non-dispersive property, the fundamental shear horizontal mode SH0 can be widely used in the detection and monitoring of defects in plate like structures. To combine an approach of ultrasonic guided waves and a tomographic technique by adapting a reconstruction algorithm for the probabilistic inspection of damage (RAPID) using a double-turn coil omnidirectional shear horizontal wave magnetostrictive patch transducer (OSH-MPT) with three different kinds of array arrangements is presented here for imaging. SH0 can propagate in a composite material through bonding double-turn coil OSH-MPT. To get the information about a damage, RAPID can be utilized based on direct wave of SH0 mode. It is advantageous to monitor a composite plate where the velocity of direct waves depends on the propagation direction. In this paper, a surface simulated defect, using a small cylinder, in a composite material is quantitatively evaluated by using shear horizontal mode tomographic approach. Using modified approaches, to eliminate the effect of uneven probability distribution of the array (UPDA) in RAPID, imaging is obtained. Three different array setups of transducers have been tested to monitor the influence on the images. It has been presented that the image generated by the proposed approach with the optimal transducer array and shape factor, β, calculation method has great influence on the real defect shape. To improve the imaging results threshold is selected based on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The proposed approach can be used to detect, locate and image the surface defects in plate like structures.

moreSurface crack in the plate like structures is one of the initial indication for its degradation. This indication could be very critical and requires some serious maintenance because this continuous exposure will lead to a severe damage to the safety and even to environment. To evaluate the structural performance and safety, a regular monitoring of such cracks is needed. A quantitative characterization method is utilized for the estimation of surface groove width instead of depth or length, which is previously done by many researchers, using Rayleigh waves in pitch-catch mode using electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). The method employs the experimentally determined reflection coefficient and transmission coefficient of Rayleigh waves scattered at a surface groove by a number of varying widths, which are compared to the reference curves, obtained from two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM) simulations for the same groove width as used in experiments. A good relation ...

moreHandover (HO) technique in LTE networks suffers from Ping-pong movement. Ping-pong HO can reduce the quality of the mobile user’s connection and increases the numbers of handovers which in turn raises the network load and generally degrades the network performance. The work aims to present a novel approach to reduce the undesirable effects of ping-pong HO in LTE Mobile Networks using timer. The study focused on the ping-ping phenomenon taking into account maintained the dropped calls rates at lowest levels. The optimal timer values are determined based on the width of overlapping area, user velocity and type of eNodeB. Analyzed results showed that the changes of overlapping area directly affect the timer values of the proposed algorithm. Optimal timer value should be selected precisely according to the width of the overlapping area, user velocity and timer value in order to reduce the ping-pong HO.
