Emerging evidence suggests that pain sensitization plays an important role in pain associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA). This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the evidence for pain sensitization in people with knee OA and the relationship between pain sensitization and symptom severity. A search of electronic databases and reference lists was carried out. All full text observational studies published between 2000 and 2014 with the aim of investigating pain sensitization in humans with knee OA using quantitative sensory testing (QST) measures of hyperalgesia and central hyperexcitability were eligible for inclusion. Meta-analysis of data was carried out using a random effects model, which included results comparing knee OA participants to controls, and results comparing high symptom severity to low symptom severity. Fifteen studies were identified following screening and quality appraisal. For the meta-analysis, pressure pain threshold (PPT) and heat pain threshold (H...

Background: Projected beliefs of doctors may contribute to poor adherence to guidelines and influencing patients' beliefs. In the Republic of Ireland (ROI) general practitioners (GPs), orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, pain consultants and rheumatologists manage the majority of patients with chronic LBP (LBP). However, unlike the UK, where GPs attitudes and beliefs have been determined, 1 no previous research has been undertaken in the ROI, hence the need for this study.

Background: General practitioners (GPs), orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists and pain consultants manage the majority of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) in primary and secondary care settings in the Republic of Ireland. Little is known about their attitudes and beliefs to CLBP, although the existing literature highlights a range of factors influencing such beliefs including: past experience, education, time and resources 1. This study aimed to investigate factors influencing attitudes and beliefs of Irish doctors to the management ...

Background: General practitioners (GPs), orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, rheumatologists and pain consultants manage the majority of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) in the Republic of Ireland. However, little is known about their attitudes and beliefs and the factors that influenced them. This study aimed to investigate factors that influenced doctors' attitudes and beliefs to CLBP. Method: A cross-sectional questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of GPs (n= 750; 35%), and all orthopaedic surgeons (n= ...
