3 Ways to Get the Most Out Of Mendeley References Manager

Mendeley Reference Manager has been designed with a variety of features that simplify your referencing workflow and help you stay organized and fully focused on your research. Here are a few of our major features that can help you get the most out of MRM.  

Minimise windows with the inbuilt reader.  

In Mendeley Reference Manager you can read any reference that has a PDF attached within the application. Additionally, you can highlight any key phrases and leave comments/annotations so you can always bookmark your thoughts. Simply select a reference and click on “Read”, or “Get PDF” to retrieve the PDF file.  

Eliminate clutter with the inbuilt notebook.  

Mendeley Reference Manager helps you keep your references and notes in the same place, so you don’t have to keep track of them both. And you can easily export your notes if you need to share your wisdom beyond MRM. To access the notebook: 

  1. Find the notebook icon in the left-hand side navigation bar or,  
  1. Select a reference and then select notebook at the top of the right-hand side bar. 

Collaborate and share your knowledge with Groups.  

This is a feature that allows users to create private groups and invite their colleagues to join. Users in the group can also highlight text and add annotations that everyone in the group can view.

How to add your Mendeley Advisor certification to your LinkedIn profile

A LinkedIn profile is popular way to organize and showcase your education and career experience. This is also a great platform to add any licenses or certificates you achieve, like your Mendeley Advisor status.  

In this quick guide, we’ll help you add your Mendeley Advisor certification and badge to your LinkedIn profile.

First things first

Please make sure you have successfully registered as a Mendeley Advisor by visiting our Mendeley Advisor Community page, clicking “Register as an Advisor” and filling out the form.

Get started

  1. Sign into LinkedIn with your existing account, or if you are new to LinkedIn, create a new account for free
  2. Navigate to your profile and scroll down to the Licenses & certifications section
  3. Click the “+” icon to the right to add a new entry
  4. For new accounts, you may need to select Add profile section, click Recommended, and select Add Licenses & Certifications.

In the new window, enter in your details:

  • Name = Mendeley Advisor
  • Issuing Organization = Mendeley (choose the first Mendeley result with the red logo that auto-populates)
  • Check the box next to “This credential does not expire”
  • Enter in the month and year you achieved your certification (this can be an estimate if you don’t know your exact date)
  • Leave credential ID blank
  • Credential URL = https://www.mendeley.com/advisor-community
  • Add at least 1 skills in the skills section.
  • Click “save”

And you’re all set. Now your Mendeley Advisor certification is proudly displayed on your LinkedIn profile for all to see. Congratulations!

Supporting the movement toward gender equity in STEM

Diverse faculties are vital. In research, they bring different perspectives to bear on projects, supporting innovation and discovery. In education, they foster a greater range of young minds thanks to their broader understanding of marginalization and privilege. While some advances toward gender equity in STEM faculties have been made, women remain greatly under-represented, particularly women of color.

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) recognizes the serious long-term impact of this lack of diverse perspectives in research and education. They’re working toward equity in STEM, and this year, they’ve launched an exciting initiative to further that crucial goal: the ADVANCE Resource and Coordination (ARC) Network Community. It is intended to bring together diverse audiences, including scholars, educators, practitioners and researchers, to collaborate on, discuss and implement change.

At Mendeley, we firmly believe in the goals of the AWIS and are proud to be supporting them. We have created a new dedicated online group for the ARC Network to help members from across the globe connect. They can share both ideas and resources, including reports, articles, datasets and videos, as well as organizing online events and learning opportunities.

In addition, Elsevier’s preprint service SSRN will host a dedicated STEM First Look series to support the initiative. This will be a quarterly digest of STEM equity content and early-stage research, including presentations, white papers, videos, podcasts and webinars.

Mendeley and SSRN are designed for connection, sharing and collaboration, and that’s exactly what the ARC Network needed when they approached us. As Dr. Heather Metcalf, AWIS Chief Research Officer and ARC Network Principal Investigator explains, “with the online research collaboration tools generously provided by Elsevier, the ARC Network will facilitate the early adoption and implementation of promising practices and sharing of new research findings. Providing these opportunities broadens our collective impact on STEM equity in unprecedented ways.”
