Duties

The commissioner, as the head of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, is responsible for promoting the agricultural industry, fostering environmental stewardship, and ensuring a safe food supply.<ref=about/> Duties of the office include, but are not limited to:[5]

  • Executing the laws and rules relating to agriculture, horticulture, farm products, the transportation and distribution of food, and weights and measures;
  • Aiding the promotion and development of agricultural resources and the improvement of the conditions of rural life. This also includes the promotion state-based agricultural goods;
  • Investigating the cost of food production and the sources of food supply for the state;
  • Providing for holding the New York state fair; and
  • Ascertaining the names and addresses of producers, importers, and distributors of food.
