The New Mexico Secretary of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources is an appointed state executive position in the New Mexico state government.
As head of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, the secretary is responsible for making the state a leader in energy development, protecting the environment, managing sustainable forests, and improving the state park system.[1]
Current officeholder
The current New Mexico Secretary of Energy Minerals and Natural Resources is Melanie Kenderdine (nonpartisan). Kenderdine assumed office in 2024.
Authority
The secretary's powers are derived from Chapter 9, Article 5A of the New Mexico Statutes.
Article 5A, Section 5:
A. The administrative head of the energy, minerals and natural resources department is the "secretary of energy, minerals and natural resources", who shall be appointed by the governor with the consent of the senate and who shall serve in the executive cabinet.
B. An appointed secretary of energy, minerals and natural resources shall serve and have all of the duties, responsibilities and authority of that office during the period of time prior to final action by the senate confirming or rejecting his appointment.[2] |

Duties
The secretary of energy, minerals and natural resources serves as the head of the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources. The secretary provides policy direction for the department and handles its communications with the governor, state legislature, and other state agencies. The secretary also provides administrative oversight for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the Game Commission, the Youth Conservation Corps, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Transportation Safety Coordinator.[3]
Additional duties also include the development of a watershed restoration strategy for the state focused on the removal of overabundant woody vegetation, particularly non-native species, and the restoration of the state's natural ecology.[4]
