Candidate Connection

Dr. Kyle Horton participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Dr. Kyle Horton's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Reviving the American Dream with an economy that works for all and rewards hard work instead of hoarded wealth

2) Saving and improving our healthcare as a right and not a privilege in the US
3) Protecting our water including clean drinking water and our oceans, which should never be for sale to the highest oil and gas bidder[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

As a doctor, I’m concerned about healthcare and Veterans healthcare in particular. I believe every American has a right to quality care. I will fight for practical solutions that put the needs of our families first, and not those of pharmaceutical and insurance company lobbyists. In caring for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans in the VA post-deployment clinic, I near tragically lost patients to delays in care. The 20 stars in my logo are to symbolize the estimated 20 Veteran lives lost everyday to suicide. These are patients, friends, family, soldiers, and heroes to me. As part of my Hippocratic Oath to “do, no harm” I feel a moral and ethical obligation to fight to defend our Veterans. I will reject efforts to privatize the VA and instead fully fund and resource the agency. We must ensure Vets have access to timely, quality, veteran-specific care that fulfills our sacred obligation to care for those who bravely served.

I’m passionate about protecting our Atlantic Coast from the dangerous prospect of offshore drilling as someone who lost an extended family member in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. Offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous, and our oceans should never be for sale to the highest oil and gas bidder. Instead, I believe we must protect our workers and promote policies that move us toward clean, healthy, rewenable energy sources to ensure our long-term energy independence. Also having graduated high school in Flint, MI; I feel personally connected to the tragedy and have a profound commitment to protecting clean water as a right. In my home district, we are facing a potential cancer-causing agent, among others, which is creating a crisis. Our kids should never be guinea pigs at the hands of corporate polluters. I’m committed to strengthening basic protections on clean drinking water, and fully funding the EPA to create a framework to hold corporate polluters accountable.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Dr. Kyle Horton answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Representative John Lewis has shown himself to truly be the “Conscience of the US Congress” and we must honor his years of commitment, nearly losing his life, in the fight for civil rights. I would like to harness any fraction of his courage, conviction, and consistency to bring that spirit to Capitol Hill in the heart of a female doctor to fight for our healthcare, defend our Vets, and preserve our democracy.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, authenticity, honesty, and a commitment to public service are all critically important in elected officials.[4]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
As a former VA doctor, I’m deeply committed to serving on the House Veterans Committee to address the tremendous challenges and bureaucratic hurdles that are leading to tragic delays. We are failing to live up to the sacred obligation we have in this country to care for our Vets. It needs to stop, because Veterans deserve more than flag pins, parades, and photo-ops.[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor independent, nonpartisan redristricting because voters should be picking their politicians and not the other way around.[4]
