This book has the BEST atmosphere, the snowy small town in Alaska with vampires was everything? I loved it so much. I also loved the idea of the vampires in this book and how they existed in the same world as the humans, and how the protagonist specifically works as a detective that investigates crimes that involve vampires. It was all so cool and unlike anything I've ever read. But I feel like this book has sooooo many characters that it got to be a little confusing. And the writing style wasn't my favorite -- I don't typically enjoy detective fiction because I find detective POV's to be so boring and they read so clinical, and unfortunately this one was no different. But this one had all the potential to be a new favorite.
I 100% get why the girlies are obsessed with this. I don't read paranormal romance often, I'm more into the vampire stuff than the werewolf stuff, but this was a fun read! I was kind of bored by the werewolf / vampire politics, I feel like a lot of that went over my head and I just didn't care that much. But the romance itself was so CUTE. I was shipping it so hard, I read part of this at the gym and it had me BLUSHING it was so steamy and adorable. So I was HERE for the romance, it was everything else I just thought was okay.

It was a bit out of my comfort zone with the historical fiction aspects, the writing was really gorgeous, but also really slow for me at times. I was really invested in the story and the romance at the beginning, but as the story progressed I got annoyed with how much romance was in this book. I wanted more of the vampires and the creepiness. I'm not sure if I would classify this book as horror, to me it read more like a historical fiction drama with a lot of romance and a little bit of creepiness.

This guy, the love interest in this book drove me absolutely nuts, he has such an old school way of thinking that I didn't find attractive at all, he was pretty obnoxious in my opinion. The female protagonist wasn't much better, it bothered me how she ignored so many red flags when it came to this guy and excused some of his annoying behavior so easily. This book was trying to be fun and campy, and at times it worked, but most of the time I didn't enjoy myself reading this, it just wasn't for me.

Way more than I thought I would, it's a top favorite of the year for me. This book has great characters who I actually cared about, a great spooky atmosphere, I could easily visualize this creepy larger than life New York apartment building, and the New York vibes were great too!!!! I didn't even think I liked vampire horror that much, but this book really has me re-thinking that. I actually cried at the end of this book, the last few pages and then the author's note at the very end really got to me, and it made me emotional!! I think this book does a great job with showing the true horrors of motherhood and dealing with postpartum depression and how scary that can be, it just really struck a chord with me. It reminded me of Salem's Lot by Stephen King because of the vampire vibes and the creepy window scenes, but then it also reminded me of Lock Every Door by Riley Sager because of the creepy rent-free New York City apartment building and I loved that about it!

It has such an interesting and complicated mother/daughter relationship at the center of this story, and I cared so much for our protagonist, Mia. I also loved the desert vibes and the way we learn about this vampire virus; it was so fun and unique! Also LOVED the sapphic relationship happening throughout the book. It was such a slow burn book with unsettling and disturbing moments, and then the very end was so chaotic and intense, I loved it! Can't wait to read the next book!

I’m usually not the biggest fan of reading about vampires, but this is legit one of the most gorgeously written books I’ve ever read. I had to stop and reread certain lines again because I thought they were so beautifully written.
“I wanted to dash myself against your rocks like a wave, to obliterate my old self and see what rose shining and new from the sea foam. The only words I had to describe you in those early days were plunging cliffside or primordial sea, crystal-cold stars or black expanse of sky. I dove down deep into your psyche, turning over every word you gave me like a jewel. Looking for meaning, seeking out the mysteries of you. I didn’t care if I lost myself in the process.”
I am usually hesitant to read horror that also involves romance, cause usually I feel like the balance between romance and horror is never great, but I absolutely loved the romance in this book. I loved that there were so many queer relationships in this book. I also loved the way this book is basically written in second person, how the protagonist is writing to you, as if you are Dracula. It was such a fascinating writing style. I also tend to get squeamish whenever there are scenes about blood or sucking blood, and there were quite a few scenes in this book where I felt so disturbed and disgusted hahaha.
“You seemed to me a fire burning in the woods. I was drawn in by your enticing, smoky darkness, a darkness that still stirs memories of safety, of autumn, of home.”
So yeah I’m super impressed with this writing, I’ll definitely be checking out anything this author writes in the future....more

I do think the villain Charlie Manx is really interesting and he’s well-written and creepy, but he was the only interesting thing about this book for me. If I wasn’t reading this for a video I might have DNF’ed it. ...more

I read all 4 books when I was in middle school so that's got to count for something. I know, looking back on it now that this story is absolutely ridiculous but when I was younger these books meant something to me. I even think these books might be the reason I got into reading books in the first place, so for that I will be forever grateful....more
