Excellence gaps in education are defined as the differences in rates of advanced accomplishments between various groups, which violate notions of equity. For example, despite having equal talents, only four women have won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1.8% of 219 awarded). Other excellence gaps exist in many fields between social classes, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and many other groups. Indeed, excellence gaps in education are supposed to exist in all areas of learning and across all domains, age groups, and educational levels. They appear in a variety of forms, for example, as disparities in top performances, participation in advanced courses, enrollment in prestigious educational institutions, recommendations, scholarships, and awards.

John Rawls’s strict theory of perfectionism would have more appeal if it were reconstructed by balancing it with moderate cultural perfectionism. In his work, A Theory of Justice, John Rawls framed the modern idea of legal perfectionism. In his thought experiment, Rawls gave different players various theories of justice that contrast with his “original position,” in which principles of justice are decided from behind a veil of ignorance. The first of the theories, strict perfectionism, argued society should be structured in a way that produces the utmost levels of excellence in someone, but not everyone. The second theory, moderate perfectionism, asserted that society should be arranged to achieve excellence, but not at the expense of meeting society’s basic needs. Rawls created these theories solely to be rejected, rejecting them primarily because of the controversies inherent in defining excellence. Rawls endorses political liberalism, which pursues the good through an overlapping consensus while avoiding the trappings of the controversy he sees in perfectionism. However, there is no reason Rawls’s preferred method of pursuing the good be applied to a reconstructed theory of perfectionism. Rather than relying on a comprehensive definition of “the good,” excellence can be defined by an overlapping consensus promoting both social and personal maximization, allowing “the good” to be encompassed by a set of pursuits toward excellence.

This chapter presents an account of an angrily virtuous, or patient, person informed by research on emotion in empirical and philosophical psychology. It is argued that virtue for anger is determined by excellence and deficiency with respect to all three of anger’s psychological functions: appraisal, motivation, and communication. Many competing accounts of virtue for anger assess it by attention to just one function; it is argued that singular evaluations of a person’s anger will ignore important dimensions of anger that bear on virtue and vice. Thus, possessing excellence with respect to only one function of anger is insufficient for virtue. The account is also extended to the characteristic vices of anger: wrath and meekness.

A globalização da economia fez com que a atividade turística tivesse um crescimento significativo nos últimos anos, ocasionando uma revolução social e econômica em âmbito mundial. Com isso, a entrada de redes hoteleiras internacionais, no mercado nacional, fez com que houvesse um aumento na concorrência, tornando a busca pela excelência, uma questão fundamental para a sobrevivência no mercado. O objetivo da presente investigação é analisar a influência que a criação de parcerias causa no desempenho dos hotéis localizados no Brasil, sob a ótica de seus gestores. A pesquisa possui abordagem quantitativa, sendo aplicada-através do instrumento questionário eletrônico-em 52 gestores de redes hoteleiras. Os resultados alcançados demonstram a existência de lacunas com relação ao gerenciamento da tecnologia de informação, produzindo subsídios relevantes, que podem auxiliar as redes hoteleiras objetos de estudo, no aumento da sua competitividade.

Las transformaciones sociales, políticas y económicas ocasionadas por la globalización ocasionaron un significativo crecimiento a la actividad turística y la gestión en el segmento del turismo pasó a cumplir un rol fundamental en el desarrollo del mercado, considerando los cambios de comportamiento de los turistas y el aumento de la competitividad entre los destinos. En este sector la hotelería se ha destacado como la mayor generadora de empleo. Con la llegada de redes hoteleras internacionales creció la competencia y la búsqueda de excelencia se tornó fundamental para sobrevivir en el mercado. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la influencia de los criterios liderazgo y estrategia en el resultado final del desempeño de los hoteles de Brasil. La investigación es cualitativa y cuantitativa. Se realizó un análisis de la información obtenida mediante la aplicación de cuestionarios electrónicos en 52 redes hoteleras. Los resultados son optimistas en relación a la excelencia en la prestación de servicios y la información puede ayudar a las redes hoteleras de este estudio a mejorar sus servicios y aumentar la competitividad.

study of architecture and thus to identify the most original structures in process of
architectural creativity, which in turn will lead to a redirecting in the educational
process of architecture. Research started from question of which structures related to
architectural talent have a direct link to structures related to learning architecture.
Answer to this question was tried by Architecture Department students at University
of Duhok as a special case study. Thus, the possibility of redirecting teaching of
architecture in initial stages according to quality of- the structures of talent of
applicants- to study architecture through exploring these structures. A test design has
been adopted that demonstrates possibility of a quantitative index of excellence based
on the talent test.

El artículo expone desarrolla un modelo de indicadores de verificación de la excelencia en la gestión responsable de las Administraciones Públicas con las personas con discapacidad en todas sus manifestaciones; trabajadores, proveedores, usuarios y ciudadanos en general. Para que la Administración Pública trabaje hacia la excelencia, optimizando sus procesos en favor de sus resultados y siguiendo criterios de responsabilidad social, debe de someterse a la autoevaluación, seguimiento y control de sus políticas, para comprobar el logro de los objetivos y/o en el caso de ser necesario, rediseñar sus políticas de forma que sean eficientes y realmente efectivas. Cuatro millones de ciudadanos y ciudadanas y sus familias engloban una población suficientemente numerosa como para condicionar un modo de hacer gestión pública inclusiva y así representar a todos los ciudadanos.

This article presents a model of verification indicators of excellence in the stewardship of the government with people with disabilities in all its manifestations; employees, suppliers, users and citizens in general. Public Administration to work towards excellence, optimizing its processes for their results and following standards of social responsibility, must undergo self-evaluation, monitoring and control of their policies, to ensure the achievement of the objectives and / or if necessary, redesign their policies so that they are truly efficient and effective. Four million citizens and their families encompass a sufficiently large population to determine a way to make governance and inclusive and represent all citizens.

This article is concerned with the macro-cultural ideal or institutional myth of excellence as defined and used in the evaluation of academic staff as part of an institutional logic. Such logics ‘prescribe what constitutes legitimate behaviour and provide taken-for-granted conceptions of what goals are appropriate and what means are legitimate to achieve these goals’ as stated by Pache and Santos Insead. In the case study university, this logic is reflected in the identification of ostensibly objective, gender-neutral key performance indicators of excellence. Lamont suggests that evaluation is necessarily subjective. Drawing on 23 qualitative interviews with those involved in such evaluation, this article looks at variation in the definition of excellence and in the evaluative practices in decision-making fora. It raises questions about the implications of this for gender inequality and for the myth of excellence and ultimately for the legitimacy of the organisation.

We often understand institutions as some kind of durable structure that transcends human lives and their intentions. The walls of the institution protect its inhabitants from the dangers of the outside world, but at the price of immobility of body and mind. Institutionalization is not merely a wall that separates the inside from the outside; it also guides the way we think and act. The university is perhaps the modern institution par excellence, and its walls are crumbling fast. ‘Excellence’, the main qualifier of academic activity today, has little to do with old academic ideals of reason or Bildung. It is a self-referential system that has posited its own success as its primary goal. The protecting walls surrounding universities are now seen as barriers to developing forms of useful expertise that fit the demands of the knowledge economy. This open issue continues ephemera's engagement with the crucial theme of the changining nature of the university. It specificially explores new forms of academic institutionalization as well as attempts to escape from them.

Adult performance of high ability individuals has seldom been researched. Current results suggest that adult excellence occurs at lower rates than high ability individuals identified in their infancy or youth, with few cases of high intellectual abilities among adults that yield excellence products. This paper focuses on the analysis of the relative frequency of biographical traits that are associated with high ability as well as to the opportunities that allow building particular knowledge structures that are non-conventional and support innovation in people who excelled. A retrospective biographical analysis was performed on a sample of 120 individuals that generated renowned excellence products, in different fields, in the XXth century. The paper develops a new model of the essential factors required to be a top business school in the world for the benefit of schools recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan. Globally, top business schools are those that excel in research, attract strong faculty, and successfully foster student development. With the aid of computer technology and students’ firsthand experiences, the Transnational Classroom (TC), a pilot innovative project created and developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was implemented in the summer of 2002 for a duration of three and a half weeks. The participants were two groups of students from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures: a study-abroad group in Costa Rica and a Spanish class on the U.S. campus. The main objective of the project was to give the U.S. campus students the opportunity to participate in the foreign culture through their peers’ experiences and thereby to raise their desire to participate in a study-abroad experience themselves and to continue studying Spanish. A study on the public relations deparments of universities in Turkey within the framework of the theory of excellence in public relations

The basic subject of this dissertation is to determine whether state and foundation
universities in Turkey comply with the criteria of excellence and to confirm their
application differences in the context of Grunig’s “The Excellence Theory in Public
Relations”. The research question of this study is: “Is there a difference between state
and foundation universities in Turkey in the application of excellence criteria in public
relations to increase the success of perfecting universities?” While the universe of the
study consists all the universities in Turkey, the sample consists the most successfull 20
state and 15 foundation universities included in the 2009 URAP report of METU. The
field of the application of the research is limited to the heads of Unit of Press Public
Relations of the universities mentioned in sample, its method is a pattern of
simultaneous qualitative and quantitive mixed methods design in which survey study
and semi-structured interview are used together. As the result of the analysis of
qualitative and quantitive research data, this study found that there is no difference in
the application of excellence public relations criteria in state and foundation universities
in Turkey, universities use excellence public relations elements, and there is no
difference in the rate of compliance with the excellence criteria between state and
foundation universities. According to the research data that does not fit the criteria of
excellence, this study demonstrated that state and foundation universities in Turkey
make public relations works focused on promotion, female managers and employees of
public relations units are not exposed to gender discrimination, the unit of public
relations is competent and efficient as much as the value given by executives, the head
of public relations has a vision of managing and structuring according to his/her field of
expertise, and foundation universities have a view of “educational marketing” in public
relations.
