This paper presents three ostraka discovered during excavations at Otranto conducted by the British School at Rome in 1978. One of the ostraka is very interesting and is discussed in detail. Incised on the body sherd of an amphora probably dating to the 10th or 11th century and of likely local origin, it mentions the angel Arlaph and regards a magic/medicinal formula apparently aimed at protecting the health and life of a newborn child or its mother, more likely both, against the nefarious actions of a demon. The formula also refers to the curative properties attributed to the plant Meum athamanticum or spignel and lead, which effectiveness would have been enhanced or made possible solely by divine mediation.

A pesquisa sobre A Agricultura de Base Ecologica no COREDE Vale do Cai (RS) buscou identificar os fenomenos presentes no espaco agrario ocupado por agricultores familiares – AF – ecologicos e de AF orgânicos. Procuramos entender como se organizam estes AF em suas Unidades de Producao Agricola – UPA – e nas associacoes, organizacoes e cooperativas nas quais participam. No desenvolvimento da pesquisa alcancamos a compreensao da viabilidade socioambiental e economica da agricultura de base ecologica praticada nesta regiao. Nosso trabalho analisa e oferece uma visao geral da producao orgânica dos AF estabelecidos no COREDE Vale do Cai (RS), em que detalhamos: as quantificacoes e especificacoes dos agroalimentos orgânicos; as redes de distribuicao solidarias ou comerciais convencionais e a certificacao de produtos orgânicos dentro das normas estabelecidas para o setor.

O objetivo dessa tese é investigar a relação entre matemática e filosofia em três obras de Platão: o Mênon, o Fédon e A República. Busca-se com isso esclarecer, primeiramente, a influência da matemática no desenvolvimento da filosofia, e, depois, o efeito desta na evolução metodológica daquela, principalmente no que diz respeito ao método analítico, ou hipotético. A pesquisa é norteada pelos testemunhos de Proclus em seus Comentários ao Livro I dos Elementos de Euclides, onde o nome de Platão é associado ao método. Em seguida, verifica-se a descrição dos métodos da análise e síntese feita por Pappus de Alexandria em sua Coleção matemática, a partir da qual são procurados nos diálogos os elementos precursores. A interpretação dos trechos matemáticos dos textos platônicos apoia- se nos testemunhos e fragmentos de Hipócrates de Quios, Filolau de Crotona e Árquitas de Tarento, elaborando assim um quadro geral do estado da arte das ciências matemáticas nos séculos V-VI a.C. O seu intuito foi o de contextualizar as principais questões da matemática que teriam atraído o interesse de Platão, levando-o a valer-se da matemática como paradigma metodológico e heurístico a ser adaptado à filosofia. Apresentando uma inovação didática envolta por problemas da imprecisão da linguagem, Platão reformula as doutrinas pré- socráticas combinadas ao pensamento matemático, cujos desdobramentos são essenciais à organização aristotélica e à formalização Euclidiana. (The objective of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between mathematics and philosophy in three Plato's work: the Meno, the Phaedo and the Republic. Searching with this to clarify, first, the influence of mathematics in the philosophy‟s development, and then, the effect of this one on the methodological development of that, especially with regard to the analytical or hypothetical method. The research is guided by the Proclus testimony in his Commentary On The First Book of Euclid’s Element, where the name of Plato is associated with the method. Hereupon, is checked the description of the methods of analysis and synthesis made by Pappus of Alexandria in his Mathematical Collection, from which is searched the precursor elements on the dialogues. The interpretation of the mathematical passages of the Platonic texts are based on testimonies and fragments of Hippocrates of Chios, Philolaus of Croton, and Archytas of Tarentum, thus elaborating a general picture of the mathematical sciences state of the art in the centuries V-VI BC. Its scope was to contextualize the main issues of the mathematics that have attracted the Plato‟s interest and that led him to avail himself of that science as a methodological and heuristic paradigm to be adapted to the philosophy. Featuring a didactic innovation surrounded by the imprecision of language problems, Plato reformulates the pre-Socratic doctrines combined to the mathematical thinking, whose developments are essential to Aristotelian organization and Euclidean formalization.)

ABSTRACT A manuscript at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America contains the first five chapters of a ten-chapter Hebrew treatise on alchemy. Although Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (1591–1655) is named as the author, the treatise’s intimate connection with Arabic sources, especially the later Islamic alchemy associated with the work of Aydamar al-Jildakī, raise serious doubts about the attribution. The argument is made that even though Delmedigo could indeed have mastered Arabic, the ascription remains questionable. Highlights of the tract are presented. Publication of the text, with English translation and notes, is planned for some future date.

While researching my grandmother’s grandfather, the venerable poet Amir Minai, I came across the writings of the Harvard professor Annemarie Schimmel mentioning this last of the Urdu formalists as “the high-sounding Amir Minai (1828-1900) who continued the Lucknow tradition.” I got curious and soon was reading more Annemarie than Amir. She had co authored a monograph on Islamic Calligraphy that I encountered at the same time as another scholar had included me among the contemporary artists that she was planning to present at this conference. As indeed it is a rare experience to both present and be presented, I decided to propose a paper at the same conference. The paper examines an unnamed image on an unnumbered page in a 56 page article by Annemarie Schimmel and Barbar Rivolta titled “Islamic Calligraphy”copiously illustrated with 67 images in The MOMA Bulletin, 50: 1, (Summer, 1992). More accurately the article has “1+3-56” pages and equally 1+3-67 images, as it is bookended with two pairs of unnumbered leaves, each consisting of a large image that remains unnamed, un-cited and un-referred to in the main text; the paradoxical logic of the parergon: neither work nor outside the work. The paper proposes to read one of the four images: a word inscribed four times in rotation, drawing our attention to its wordless centre.

Conjuntar los niveles educativos, los niveles de conocimiento y los momentos de abstracción del conocimiento puede constituir un verdadero Aleph, en el sentido manejado por Jorge Luis Borges en sus ficciones./In this essay we aim to emphasize the link between educational levels and levels of knowledge, the root of which is found in the work of scientific-philosophical methodology. Additionally, these links can be approached at three points of abstraction: subjectivization,
practical-objective, and critical-objective. Combining the educational levels with the levels of knowledge and points of the abstraction of knowledge can constitute a true Aleph, in the sense used by Jorge Luis Borges in his fictional stories.

In this research, whose question was: "What features of the Building Process of Learning Objects in Differential and Integral Calculus during a Design Activity?" we investigate the construction process of Learning Objects in Differential and Integral Calculus. This process took place over an Extension Course offered to students of Mathematics degree from the at Institute of Geoscience and Sciences from Sao Paulo State University at Rio Claro/SP (IGCE / UNESP).
