Cannes: Critics’ Week Announces 2016 Lineup

23 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There are no American features to be found in Critics’ Week at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as the parallel section dedicated to first and second films will privilege both European productions and fresh discoveries from such countries as Turkey, Lebanon, Cambodia and Singapore.

The 55th edition of Critics’ Week will kick off on May 12 with Justine Triet’s “In Bed With Victoria,” a light-hearted, frank and modern comedy about a young single mother (played by Virginie Efira) trying to find the balance between her career and her love life.

According to Critics’ Week artistic director Charles Tesson, this sophomore offering from the Cesar-nominated director of “Age of Panic” (which opened in Cannes’ Acid sidebar in 2013) underscores a willingness to shake up the sidebar and marks a change in tone from the typically serious-minded movies that constitute the rest of the section.

Amazon takes aim at Netflix

17 April 2016 10:24 PM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Jeff Bezos’ e-commerce giant has moved aggressively against the VOD market leader in the Us with a new subscription tier.

From Sunday [April 17] customers are able to watch film and TV via Prime Video, a content-only package that costs $8.99 per month and is not contingent on paying for Amazon Prime.

Crucially that price-point puts Prime Video one dollar a month below what Netflix will begin charging its subscribers for a two-streaming option in May (upm from $7.99) – and Prime Video offers each customer three streams.

This means customers will no longer need to pay $99 a year for Amazon Prime as a way of getting content.

In fact the Prime pay structure has been overhauled and from now on will exist as a more expensive monthly outlay of $10.99. According to reports Bezos said Prime customers had requested a more flexible payment approach.

The move is clearly aimed at Netflix and caps a triumphant week for the content side of Bezos »

Tel Aviv – Ronit Elkabetz, one of the great luminaries of the Israeli film industry, died Tuesday morning after a private battle with cancer. She was 51.

The actress and filmmaker was known equally for her striking dark looks and immense emotional vulnerability onscreen. Her life ended just as her career was at an all-time high: In 2014, Elkabetz’s film “Gett: The Trail of Viviane Amsalem,” which she co-wrote and co-directed alongside her brother Shlomi Elkabetz, was awarded the Israeli Ophir Award for best film, the Jewish State’s equivalent of the Academy Award. “Gett” went on to serve as Israel’s 2014 entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, and also earned a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Golden Globes.

The casting of Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the Paramount/DreamWorks adaptation of Japanese anime hit Ghost in the Shell has drawn accusations of "whitewashing" and sparked fierce debate on social media across the Western world. Series Mania: ‘Section Zero,’ ‘Frozen Dead,’ ’Contact’ Underscore France’s New TV Ambitions

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Paris – Three high-profile Gallic series – “Section Zero,” “The Frozen Dead” and “Contact” – feature at Coming Next From France, a Series Mania/Tvfi showcase which captures the French TV in evolution.

French broadcasters still have to think of their home markets. Of the six-scripted dramas, three are procedurals made in large part for France, where murder mysteries have a long tradition. All, however, show an ambition to also sell outside their country of origin, while others capture a burgeoning attempt at diversification of France’s scripted-tv offer.

Produced by the Luc Besson-owned EuropaCorp TV’s Bad Company, and a Canal Plus original series co-financed by Studiocanal, which sells world rights, and Belgium’s UMedia, tapping into Belgian tax breaks, “Section Zero” is budgeted at €2 million ($2.3 million) an episode, per Edouard de Vesinne.

That makes “Section Zero” one of the most expensive French TV shows ever made, doubling France’ average TV »

Ricky Gervais Likens Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Dog Apology to Hostage Video

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's dog smuggling apology video, mandated by an Australian court, has drawn reactions from figures from the entertainment and political worlds. Comedian Ricky Gervais likened the now viral clip to a hostage video, while Australia’s deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce said it looks like an audition video for The Godfather. They were among a slew of people who mocked the 42-second video, made by the couple on Monday as penance for smuggling their dogs into Australia last year. ‘Supergirl’ Sails Toward Future in Cliffhanging Season Finale (Spoilers)

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Beyond lauding the pilot, Variety’s initial review of “Supergirl” posed several questions, the most pointed (or at least pragmatic) being whether this sort of unabashed superhero series – having thrived on the network’s kid sister, the CW – could take off on CBS. The answer was not entirely, which didn’t prevent producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and their team from applying a very “The Flash”-like formula to this handsome, fun, chaotic, slightly geeky addition to DC’s stable of TV heroes.

As with their other shows, the series chewed through great chunks of story, revealing Supergirl’s secret identity to multiple characters, introducing additional heroes (as in J’onn J’onzz, a.k.a. Martian Manhunter), and digging deep into comic-book mythology. While those weaned on comics might readily know the effects of red Kryptonite or the rules surrounding alternate universes, these series simply dive in and let »

‘Nina’ Review: Zoe Saldana, What Happened to Your Miss Simone Biopic?

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Nina,” an infuriatingly amateurish picture about the great singer and pianist Nina Simone, is a new low for the musical biopic genre. First time writer-director Cynthia Mort, whose main experience is as a writer on the sitcoms “Roseanne” and “Will & Grace,” unforgivably exploits Simone’s memory and name with a movie that plays like a sketch comedy parody of the worst possible Nina Simone biopic. No one involved seems to have a clue who Simone was or what she stood for. Mort has said that she could not get financing for “Nina” when she submitted the names of her preferred. »

Stephen Colbert Makes ‘Late Show’ Change in First Night Under New Showrunner

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Stephen Colbert isn’t afraid of change.

Viewers who tune in regularly to CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” may have noticed something different about Monday night’s program. Yes, the host still came on and delivered jokes and made the usual nod to his bandleader, Jon Batiste, and his band, Stay Human. But the show opened with the video introduction that typically comes after Colbert has run out on stage and made a few jokes. The opening segments seemed quicker and tighter. And the host teased what he called an “exclusive”  interview in a restaurant with Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during which they discussed the merits of cheesecake.

Why, it almost seemed as if someone had imposed the discipline of a morning-news show on the late-night host.

Indeed, that is what is taking place. Colbert’s broadcast this evening was his program’s first under a new showrunner, »
