This study investigated the stability of a perspective transformation over time. The findings confirmed that perspective transformations, at least in our sample, are irreversible; we also discovered that meaning schemes continue to change

Our research explored the experiences of educators who teach in a gender-responsive program for women in a jail. We interrogated how educators fostered empowerment in their classes, what their motivations were for teaching in the program, and the tensions that existed for them when using emancipatory teaching practices in jail. Findings indicate that educators used Freirean concepts to foster empowerment, were motivated to share their knowledge, were motivated to counter dehumanization, and recognized their commonalities and privilege. Trust and agency created tensions while using an emancipatory pedagogy at a jail. Findings have implications for educators teaching marginalized populations.

In this article, the authors examine the value of survivor leaders in organizations helping women transition out of the sex trade and how organizations can best utilize survivor leaders. They interviewed 10 women who have been out of the sex trade from between 3 and 20 years. They found survivor leaders (a) created relatability for participants exiting out of the sex trade, (b) modeled a hopeful future, and (c) mitigated power issues. The authors uncovered three ways organizations can engage survivor leaders: (a) on boards, (b) in paid staff positions, and (c) as volunteers. They discuss the ethical and financial issues associated with organizations using unpaid and paid survivor leaders. Furthermore, the authors recommend practical ways organizations can improve by engaging survivor leaders in peer education, policy setting, and management. They also encourage organizations to view survivors as experts. The authors’ findings move adult education beyond a focus on peer education to ...

This review aims to understand everyday learning of older adults using mobile devices. Specifically, for both academic and practical implications, we wanted to know what theoretical perspectives researchers adopted and how mobile devices play a role in older adults’ informal learning. We analyzed 28 empirical studies (15 qualitative, 10 quantitative, and 3 mixed methods) that met our selection criteria. Our findings revealed that the studies used four theoretical frameworks to understand their learning: (a) technology acceptance theory, (b) experiential learning theory, (c) social cognitive theory, and (d) activity theory. We also identified six themes of older adults’ informal learning using mobile devices through key findings from the existing studies: (a) self-learning of health or medical knowledge, (b) affective and emotional dimensions, (c) ambivalent attitudes, (d) practical uses, (e) interpersonal and intergenerational communication, and (f) collaborative learning experience...

Nurse preceptors are integral to retaining new nurses. Given the challenges associated with attracting and retaining rural nurses (Trossman, 2001), the importance of preceptors in the retention of new nurses and the dearth of studies explicitly examining the attributes and qualifications of successful rural nurse preceptors, the purpose of this study was to unearth attributes and qualifications of successful rural nurse preceptors. In this basic qualitative study, 19 participants completed 1-2 hour in-depth interviews. Data was analyzed using the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Major themes included a sense of honor, professionalism, self-efficacy, and the ability to learn. In addition to confirming previous research, the findings demonstrated the importance of emotion in the teaching/learning process and the influence of observational learning on preceptors’ present-day instruction. Practical implications included acknowledging emotion in the teaching/learning...

The purpose of this monograph is to serve as a primer for practitioners on the foundational theories of adult learning. It begins with an explanation two lenses through which learning theory is viewed: behaviorism and constructivism. The next section defines andragogy and delineates Knowles's five assumptions about adult learners. This is followed by a critique of Knowles's assumptions of andragogy through the eyes of foreign-born adult learners that examines the historic, political, and sociocultural contexts that influenced Knowles. The paper then presents several perspectives on transformative learning theory, describing theoretical approaches and criticisms of the theory. The next chapter discusses definitions, history, philosophical underpinnings, models, and criticisms of self-directed learning. A chapter on critical and postmodern theory explains their historical development, underlying philosophical tenets, and the differences between them. The next chapter examines ...

In previous greenhouse and field studies, the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid and the entomopathogenic nematodes Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema glaseri interacted synergistically against third-instars of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica, the oriental beetle, Exomala (=Anomala) orientalis, and three masked chafer species, Cyclocephala hirta, C. pasadenae, and C. borealis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). We tested whether this interaction would also occur with other neonicotinoids,

Individuals experience disease in a variety of contexts. In this study, I examined how the temporal context (e.g., historical time, social time, chronological age and the passage of time) affected the incorporation of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. I used semi structured interviews to collect data from 36 individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Historical time did little to influence the initial reaction to the diagnosis. Chronological age shaped the initial reaction to the diagnosis for some participants. Social time affected immersion in the HIV/AIDS community and the passage of time influenced the integration of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. The findings add depth to extant studies on the incorporation of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. Key Words: Time, HIV/AIDS, Self, Social Identity, Basic Qualitative Study. Since the widespread use of life-extending medications, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has been considered a ...
