Assam Election Results 2024 Highlights: Congress' Rakibul Hussain wins Dhubri seat by margin of over 10 lakh votes

Guwahati: The delimitation effect and internal discord failed to impede Congress’s electoral prospects in Assam’s Dhubri, Jorhat and Nagaon constituencies, where the party registered resounding victories by substantial margins.

Delimitation initially created problems for Congress in Nagaon, as a part of Kaliabor seat was merged with Nagaon seat. This merger was advantageous for Congress demographically, but both the sitting MP from Nagaon — Pradyut Bordoloi and Kaliabor MP Gaurav — started vying for Nagaon seat, resulting in a conflicting situation. However, the AICC adroitly managed the crisis by shifting Gaurav to Jorhat, which was lacking a heavyweight contender from Congress.

Nevertheless, Congress surmounted all the challenges, with Gaurav Gogoi attributing his victory to the youngsters as a reflection of “New Assam”. He emphasized that Congress endeavoured to comprehend the problems of the voters across diverse areas, inhabited by various communities and tribes.

Hailing Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi's win from Assam's Jorhat as "amazing and significant", BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia on Tuesday said the political strategy adopted by his opponent, which is his party, did not succeed in the elections. The legislator's post on the micro-blogging site led Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to state that Saikia might be on his way out of the saffron party.
Taking a dig at his party, Saikia said that money, huge publicity, presence of many leaders in the constituency and arrogant speeches by leaders campaigning for the candidate contesting against Gogoi did not yield any positive result.

Gaurav Gogoi snatched the Jorhat seat from the ruling BJP by defeating Topon Kumar Gogoi with a margin of 1,44,393 votes, according to the Election Commission.

"Special congratulations to @GauravGogoiAsm for your amazing win. This result is very significant in Jorhat in many ways.

"The outcome proved that - Money, Big Publicity, Over Doses of Leaders and Arrogant Speeches does not always help to win elections," Saikia, the MLA from Khumtai Assembly constituency, said in a post on X.

Assam's longest serving MLA for eight consecutive terms, Asom Gana Parishad's Phani Bhusan Choudhury on Tuesday won Lok Sabha elections from Barpeta constituency in Assam as a ruling alliance member. Choudhury, who has been an MLA from Bongaigaon legislative constituency in Assam Assembly since 1985, tasted victory in Lok Sabha elections in his second attempt. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, when AGP had no alliance with any other party, the MLA came fourth in Barpeta.
This time, Choudhury received 8,60,113 votes against 6,37,762 votes of his nearest rival Deep Bayan from Congress. He won by a margin of 2,22,351 votes.

The Barpeta constituency has changed its characteristics over the years and after the delimitation exercise last year, it became a Hindu majority seat from Muslim-dominated earlier.

Rakibul Hussain of Congress has emerged victorious in Assam's Dhubri by a significantly high margin of 10,12,476 votes. He defeated All India United Democratic Front's Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal.Rakibul received 14,71,885 votes and Badruddin received 4,59,409 votes.

BJP candidate Dilip Saikia has won the seat in Darrung-Udalguri after garnering 8,68,387 votes. He has defeated Congress candidate Madhab Rajbangshi by a wide margin of 3,29,012 votes.

Bijuli Kalitha Medhi of BJP has clinched the victory in Guwahati after being the leading candidate since the beginning of the counting. She has secured 8,94,887 votes, defeating INC's Mira Borthakur Goswami by a margin of 2,51,090 votes.

BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal wins the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Dibrugarh after receiving 6,93,762 votes. He has defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad's Lurinjyoti Gogoi by a margin of 2,79,321 votes.

INC's Gaurav Gogoi has emerged as the victor in Jorhat after leading since the beginning of the counting. He has defeated BJP's Topon Kumar Gogoi by a margin of 1,44,393 votes. This marks the Congress' 1st win in Assam.

Ranjit Dutta of BJP has vanquished the opposition in Sonitpur garnering 7,75,778 votes, winning by a huge margin of 3.6 lakh votes. INC's Premlal Ganju becomes the runner-up securing 4,14,380 votes.

BJP candidate Kamakhya Prasad Tasa has won the Lok Sabha Election 2024 in Kaziranga by a margin of 2,48,947 votes, defeating INC's Roselina Tirkey who received 6,48,096 votes.

The atmosphere at the BJP's Assam headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan, remained "subdued" despite the party-led alliance being on track to secure a double-digit number of Lok Sabha seats from the state. Assam, which has 14 parliamentary constituencies, appears to be favouring the saffron party in this election.

The Jorhat Lok Sabha seat is set to witness a fierce contest between two prominent political figures from the Ahom community, BJP’s sitting MP Topon Kumar Gogoi and Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi.


Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha and the son of former chief minister late Tarun Gogoi has made a strategic move to contest from Jorhat, where his father had also previously won elections in 1971 and 1977.


With Ahom voters making up 32.25% of the total 17 lakh electorate in Jorhat constituency, both candidates are relying heavily on their support to emerge victorious in the elections.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated the state's commitment to a fair and peaceful counting process. In a tweet, he emphasised that strict instructions have been given to the police to maintain law and order throughout the process. The CM warned that any attempts to disrupt the proceedings or take the law into their own hands will be met with firm action, underscoring that such behavior will not be tolerated.

The voter turnout in Dhubri in the last phase ended up with the highest turnout among all the three phases, according to the final report issued by EC.With over 26 lakh voters, the highest in the state, Dhubri’s electorate increased by more than 43% over that of 2019 due to the reorganisation of the constituency along with other constituencies during the delimitation exercise last year. This was the first election in the state after delimitation.In the Dhubri constituency, former minister and legislator Rakibul Hussain of Congress and BJP ally AGP’s Zabed Islam is challenging the three-time sitting MP, Badruddin Ajmal.

Guwahati constituency recorded the second lowest turnout. Dhubri constituency, surpassed its previous record of the highest voter turnout among all the state’s Lok Sabha constituencies, setting a new one of 92.08% followed by Barpeta with 81.02%, Kokrajhar with 80.44%.

Tribal-majority Diphu, which encompasses the two hill districts of the state, recorded the lowest turnout of 75.74%.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier predicted that the BJP and NDA allies will win 13 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, except the Muslim-majority Dhubri seat.

Exuding confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will return for a third term after the Lok Sabha elections, Sarma said “Even if a top star of Bollywood contests against the prime minister in Varanasi, Modiji will win. He is etched in the minds and hearts of people who will ensure his win,” he said.

Sarma had earlier also predicted that BJP and its allies would win 11 seats in the state. He pointed out that the scenario has changed after Congress released its list of candidates on Tuesday. “Congress has committed suicide with the selection of its candidates in Nagaon and Karimganj seats, and now we will win two more seats,” he said, without elaborating on the remark.

Amid the Met department issuing a rain alert, the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Assam were held on Tuesday May 7 to determine the electoral fortunes of 47 candidates competing for four seats — Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar (ST) and Dhubri, which collectively have an electorate of over 81 lakh.

The four remaining poll-bound seats are located across 10 districts in the lower Assam region and are bordered by West Bengal to the west, Bhutan to the north, and Meghalaya and Bangladesh to the south.

The four constituencies have a diverse electoral population, including indigenous tribal and non-tribals and an enormous group of Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, and the redrawing of boundaries during the delimitation exercise last year has significantly altered the political landscape.

In the 2014 elections, the BJP secured 7 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) each won three seats, and one seat went to an Independent candidate.

In the 2019 elections, BJP had contested in 10 seats, AGP in three and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in one. BJP won 9 seats. BJP dumped BPF in 2020 and started a new partnership with UPPL.

Assam comprises 14 Lok Sabha constituencies including Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu, Karimganj, Silchar, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Guwahati.

Among these 14 Lok Sabha seats, 11 seats are unreserved, two are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, and one is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
