For these mixtures, the density relaxation function g(t) changes from a stretched exponential (β=0.47) near the glass transition temperature Tg, to an exponential (β=1) form at high temperatures, whereas the composition dependence of the relaxation time τ reflects mainly differences between the Tg values. The 3:2 fragile glass (Tg=60 °C) is one of the few examples where g(t) is now known from the glass-like (60–90 °C) to the liquid-like (T>100 °C) region through the application of various dynamic scattering techniques. The τ(T) and the evolution of the width β of the distribution are discussed in terms of the physical pictures implied by current models of the liquid and glass transition phase.Publisher: American Institute of PhysicsPublication Date: 1991Publication Name: Journal of Chemical PhysicsResearch Interests: Engineering, Chemistry, Light Scattering, Chemical Physics, Ionic Liquids, and 7 morePhysical sciences, Dynamic Light Scattering, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Glass Transition, Glass Transition Temperature, Brillouin Scattering, and Relaxation Time(Physical sciences, Dynamic Light Scattering, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Glass Transition, Glass Transition Temperature, Brillouin Scattering, and Relaxation Time)•The Use of Crystalline Carbon-Based Nanomaterials (CBNs) in Various Biomedical Applicationsmoreby Evangelia A. In conjunction with traditional optical-heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect spectroscopy, polarization-selective SM-OKE measurements are used to experimentally measure the anisotropic and isotropic third-order nonlinear response of CS2, acetonitrile, methanol, and water. These two responses, which allow the intermolecular dynamics to be separated by symmetry, form a complete and independent basis for describing the polarization dependence of nonresonant third-order experiments. The Fourier transform spectral densities of these responses are presented for each liquid and are interpreted in terms of the molecular and interaction-induced contributions to the many-body polarizability. The molecular contributions are suppressed in the isotropic response for all liquids, while the line shape in the interaction-induced portion of the spectra varies with the liquid. For the non-hydrogen-bonding liquids, the isotropic line shape is similar (albeit suppressed) as compared with that of the anisotropic spectrum, but the high-frequency wing of the isotropic spectrum exhibits completely new features in methanol and water. The isotropic water response is especially notable, since it is exceedingly fast and distinct from the anisotropic response.Publisher: American Institute of PhysicsPublication Date: Aug 15, 1996Publication Name: Journal of Chemical PhysicsResearch Interests: Engineering, Chemistry, Raman Spectroscopy, Chemical Physics, Anisotropy, and 7 morePhysical sciences, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Raman Scattering, Second Language Composition, Temperature Effect, Polarizability, and Isotropy(Physical sciences, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Raman Scattering, Second Language Composition, Temperature Effect, Polarizability, and Isotropy)•A Combined Gas and Water Permeances Method for Revealing the Deposition Morphology of GO Grafting on Ceramic Membranesmoreby Evangelia A. In this work, we have achieved the chemical anchoring of GO layers on custom-made macroporous disks, fabricated in the lab by pressing α-Al2O3 powder. To this end, three different linkers, polydopamine (PDA), 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTMS), were elaborated for their capacity to tightly bind the GO laminate on the ceramic membrane surface. The same procedure was replicated on cylindrical porous commercial ZrO2 substrates because of their potentiality for applications on a large scale. The gas permeance properties of the membranes were studied using helium at 25 °C as a probe molecule and further scrutinized in conjunction with water permeance results. Measurements with helium at 25 °C were chosen to avoid gas adsorption and surface diffusion mechanisms. Conventional disinfectants (ozone, UV irradiation, chlorine) have been insufficient in providing safe water due to the development of undesirable and noxious by-products. TiO2 comprises an attractive alternative to conventional methods because of its versatility and recently explored biocidal efficiency. As a result, within the framework of this study, chemically modified, visible active nanocrystalline TiO2 powders (N-TiO2, N,S-TiO2, and Ag@N-TiO2) were prepared via a low-cost, feasible sol-gel method for the treatment of real municipal wastewater effluents. When these factors are combined with experience and scientific knowledge, they can benefit not only the patient, but also, by extension, the entire health system. The development of rapidly growing novel technologies allows for accurate diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nanomedicine can contribute to exhaled breath analysis (EBA) for disease diagnosis, providing nanomaterials and improving sensing performance and detection sensitivity. Through EBA, gas-based nano-sensors might be applied for the detection of various essential diseases, since some of their metabolic products are detectable and measurable in the exhaled breath. This phenomenon is not only connected with the rise of ROS levels in multiple tissues but is also associated with the induction of senescence in different cell types. Several signaling pathways that are associated with the reduction in ROS levels and the regulation of the cell cycle are being activated, so that the organism can battle deleterious effects. Within this context, autophagy plays a significant role. Through autophagy, cells can maintain their homeostasis, as if it were a self-degradation process, which removes the “wounded” molecules from the cells and uses their materials as a substrate for the creation of new useful cell particles. However, the role of autophagy in senescence has both a “dark” and a “bright” side. This review is an attempt to reveal the mechanistic aspects of this dual role. However, students often face difficulties in that field and how to link that knowledge to macroscopic behaviour. Therefore, the main purpose of this work is to present a specifically designed educational material that focus to the benefits of viewing visualizations to enhance students' conceptual understanding of chemistry concepts. Under this frame, educational material for specific basic chemistry concepts that are taught in the Chemistry course and supplied at the National Technical University of Athens, in which 3D visualizations with cartoons were constructed and employed. The material was designed for in class use from the educator or for core-concept use. Concepts that combine the microscopic level with the symbolic language were chosen. So, specifically 3D dimensional visualizations were made for the atomic orbitals (dxy, dxz, dzy, dz 2), types of solids-ionic structures (crystal of sodium chloride), molecular structures (water), covalent lattice structures (diamond, graphite structures), metallic structures (copper) etc. Since it was planned all constructed applications to run on all functional and most browsers in terms of 3D, so code three js (javascript that supports 3D) was used. Also, the interactive agents "cartoons" Einstein and Curie, were developed from scratch in programs that apply animation in 2D characters, giving them freedom of movement and realism at the same time. In the near future a planned research will be carried out to study and find out how the students' scientific knowledge can be reconstructed in the above mentioned concepts in the Inorganic-General Chemistry course, which is taught at three schools of the National Technical University of Athens, exploiting the developed cognitive and their metacognitive abilities, their spatial ability and their optical encoding.Publication Date: 2017Research Interests: Mathematics Education()•Photo-activated N-doped/TiO2 nanoparticles with anticancer propertiesmoreby Evangelia A. It is well established that when pure TiO2 nanoparticles are excited by ultraviolet light, the formed reactive oxygen species (ROS) can significantly damage cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and, thus, promoting TiO2 as a promising photosensitizer against cancer. Surface modification by TiO2 doping with nitrogen (N-doped) is proved to improve TiO2 photocatalytic activity, according to recent studies. This doping process is associated with the reduction of electron-hole recombination, resulting in efficient separation and stronger photocatalytic reactions, upon irradiation with visible light. Thus, synthesis of N-doped TiO2 was conducted, followed by surface and morphological characterization realized by micro-Raman spectroscopy, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) microscopy and DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) techniques. However, the design of a suitable substrate, which combines ease of use with reproducibility, remains a major problem. In this study, the use of silver mesoparticles (AgMPs) as SERS substrate was investigated. A green methodology was applied for the synthesis of the AgMPs, using the novel hydroxyethylammonium ascorbate ionic liquid as the reducing agent and chitosan as the stabilising and homogenising matrix. Experimental design was applied for the optimisation of the AgMPs' synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the flower-shape morphology of the materials. The potential application of AgMPs as SERS using Rhodamine B as the model molecule and promising and reproducible results were obtained in concentrations even at 10−9 M. Dynamic light scattering and SEM confirmed the stability of the synthesised AgMPs over a period of 18 months.Publisher: Elsevier BVPublication Date: 2020Publication Name: Journal of Molecular LiquidsResearch Interests: Materials Science, Raman Spectroscopy, Ionic Liquid, Scanning Electron Microscope, Raman Scattering, and 3 moreMolecule, Molecular liquids, and Rhodamine(Molecule, Molecular liquids, and Rhodamine)•Usability evaluation of 3-D visualisations augmented by cartoons for teaching solids and crystal structures in chemical engineeringmoreby Evangelia A. Special emphasis is placed on the presentation of the features and the potential of this electronic system as an integrated learning teaching and research tool of electronic lessons that exploits modern web technologies without any software add-ons, using only a modern Web Browser at any desktop or mobile computing device. The structure of the educational/teaching scenario is designed and extracted dynamically from the platform. There is extensive reference to the use and exploitation of a considerable number of free web-based tools for the design of an original or the reuse of an existing digital material, as well as, to the possibility of transforming a digital material into an interactive application. In each scenario the creator/designer, by using knowledge, experience and imagination, is able to create a compound digital material in accordance with one or more cognitive subjects, thematic areas and classifications. This is done by describing teaching goals and objectives, instructional phases and worksheets, and fully adjust them into the structure of a modern and pedagogically exploitable digital educational/teaching scenario that is consistent with the current applied Greek curricula of education. The potential of the AESOP Platform has already been exploited by thousands of Greek teachers. Currently the platform hosts high quality teaching digital material, scientifically and pedagogically accredited by the responsible scientific authority for educational issues of the primary and secondary education in Greece (Greek Institute of Educational Policy). Any teacher in Greece, has the potential to choose among 39 cognitive subjects of the primary and secondary education and to design digital interactive educational/teaching scenarios for all students, for diverse groups of students or even for individual students with special needs or inclinations.Publication Date: 2017Publication Name: INTED2017 ProceedingsResearch Interests: Engineering, Computer Science, Education, Educational Technology, Multimedia, and 3 moreTechnology Enhanced Education, Educational Scenarios, and service Business(Technology Enhanced Education, Educational Scenarios, and service Business)•Photocatalytic Testing Protocol for N-Doped TiO2 Nanostructured Particles under Visible Light Irradiation Using the Statistical Taguchi Experimental Designmoreby Evangelia A. However, experimentation on a real system may encounter various barriers. Therefore, a learning environment was developed in order to perform Arduino experiments on digital entities when the real ones are inaccessible. That was consisted of an Arduino-based pH meter from which measurements were transmitted to three different digital entities: a shoal of goldfish, an ancient Greek temple and an ancient Greek statue. In order to evaluate the learning outcomes of teaching through physical experiments on digital entities, a pre- to post-comparison was conducted on three Greek Junior High Schools. In each school, students were divided into two subgroups. The one group was taught about Acids and Bases through physical Arduino experiments by demonstration, using real instruments and substances, with a simultaneous observation of their effects on the digital entities in real- time, while the other group was taught through the same Arduino experiments by demonstration without the use of the digital entities. The results have demonstrated that students of the former group exhibited greater learning gains regarding Declarative Knowledge than those of the latter one.Publisher: Informa UK LimitedPublication Date: 2021Publication Name: Interactive Learning EnvironmentsResearch Interests: Computer Science, Education, and Interactive Learning Environments()•Production of copper powder form printed circuit boards by electrodepositionmoreby Evangelia A. In fact, they have been proven to be source for the recovery of metals. In the present study printed circuit boards (PCBs) were cut and treated thermally at 500oC for 1 h in both air and nitrogen atmosphere. The obtained material was dissolved in three different acid media HNO3aq, HClaq and H2SO4aq, in order to extract copper. The achieved Cu recovery percentages were 97.5, 65 and 76.5% respectively. Electrodeposition technique was applied in order to recover copper in powder form. More than 98% of copper was recovered achieved by application of high current density resulting to dendritic structure of copper. We have selected the molten salt systems containing quasispherical complex MCl4−2 anions (M=Mn+2 and Zn+2) and performed the study of their ν1(A1) isotropic Raman line profiles as a function of the temperature and concentration. We have analyzed the form of the time correlation function of vibrational dephasing and determined the type of modulation events, which cause the line broadening processes in these systems; these are found to be purely discrete Markovian. Within the formalism of the purely discrete Markovian modulation, we have made a judgement about spectroscopically active interactions in these systems. Interionic potential in complex chlorides is dominated by the attraction forces, which depend on the interparticle distance r as r−4, and by repulsion of the r−7-type.Publisher: AIP PublishingPublication Date: 2001Publication Name: The Journal of Chemical PhysicsResearch Interests: Engineering, Chemistry, Light Scattering, Molten Salt, Chemical Physics, and 10 moreIonic Liquids, Computer Simulation, Physical sciences, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Dephasing, Raman Scattering, Raman Spectra, Isotropy, Correlation function, and ionic bonding(Ionic Liquids, Computer Simulation, Physical sciences, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Dephasing, Raman Scattering, Raman Spectra, Isotropy, Correlation function, and ionic bonding)•Dynamic light scattering study of ionic KNO3–Ca(NO3)2 mixturesmoreby Evangelia A. Although the system exhibits a simple eutectic at 83 wt?% Na2B4O7 and Te = 642°C, interesting structural changes of borate glasses formed have been evidenced by means of IR and Raman spectroscopy. Over 80–100 wt?% Na2B4O7 range AlF63- anions are diluted in the vitreous matrix without significant structural changes while the further increase of Na3AlF6 content diminishes the concentration of BO4 groups and promotes the appearance of complex anions AlFx(x-3)- (x = 6, 5, 4) as well as the possible new BF4- and/or BO3F4- species.Publication Date: 1999Publication Name: Journal of Materials Science - J MATER SCIResearch Interests: Engineering, Materials Science, Raman Spectroscopy, Phase Diagrams, Infrared spectroscopy, and 7 moreBoron, Structural Change, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Infrared, X ray diffraction, Differential Thermal Analysis, and phase diagram(Boron, Structural Change, CHEMICAL SCIENCES, Infrared, X ray diffraction, Differential Thermal Analysis, and phase diagram) Download (.pdf)•Nickel Matrix Composite Coatings: Application in Textile Machinery and Evaluation of Cotton Products Qualitymoreby Evangelia A. The surface morphology, the preferred orientation, grain size and microhardness of Ni deposits were determined as functions of the concentration of the additive in bath, the type of imposed current and the frequency of imposed current pulses. The combined imposition of predefined pulse current conditions (pulse frequency) and specific additive concentration in the bath leads to specific textural modifications ([211] and [100] preferred crystal orientations) accompanied by considerable nanosized grain refinement of the coatings. The overall experimental data indicate that the production of hard and bright nanostructured deposits could be obtained under pulse current regime and reduced amounts of cis-2-butene-1,4-diol compared to direct plating.Publisher: Informa UK LimitedPublication Date: 2012Publication Name: Transactions of the IMFResearch Interests: Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Electrodeposition, Nanocrystalline Material, and Nickel()And 115 moreBooksBook Chapters•Multimedia applications by using video-recorded experiments for teaching biology in secondary educationmoreby Evangelia A.
