Santiago Rodríguez, Hannes Wolf and Agustín Ojeda each scored in the first half and New York City FC beat Orlando City 4-2 to end a three-game losing streak. New York City (10-8-2) won for the first time since a 5-1 victory over San Jose on May 31. Orlando (5-9-6) dropped to 0-6-1 in New York since 2018. There was a violent collision in the 18th minute when Orlando goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar came out of his area to stop a ball and collided with NYCFC forward Malachi Jones. Stajduhar was carted off the field, while giving a thumbs up to the crowd, and Jones was helped off by team personnel. Orlando announced Stajduhar was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition.

Lionel Messi will skip Argentina’s last Copa America group match against Peru on Saturday because of a right leg injury. Messi hurt his leg in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Chile on Tuesday that clinched a quarterfinal berth for the defending champions. The Argentina superstar received treatment on his right thigh area after getting kicked by Chile defender Gabriel Suazo in the 24th minute, but he remained in the game. Argentina assistant coach Walter Samuel says the team will go “day to day” with Messi’s injury and monitor how it progresses. Messi has battled injuries since joining Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami last season.

Midfielder Aidan Morris has transferred to Middlesbrough of England’s second tier League Championship from Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. The 22-year-old joined the Crew academy in 2017, played college soccer for Indiana in 2019 and then signed with the Crew for the 2020 season. He scored six goals in 83 regular-season MLS matches. He made his U.S. national team debut in January 2023 and has five international appearances.

Sporting Kansas City has hired longtime New England Revolution general manager Mike Burns as its sporting director. He will oversee Sporting KC’s player recruitment, roster-building strategy and development of the club’s professional player pathway program. Friday's move comes after the club parted ways Monday with Brian Bliss, who had been serving as technical director and vice president of player personnel. The club earlier this year tried to hire longtime Portland executive Gavin Wilkinson as its sporting director. But it reversed course amid public backlash tied to his handling of alleged misconduct while leading the Timbers and Thorns.
