Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a worldwide public health problem. It is estimated that nearly 90% of patients with chronic renal failure manifest some symptoms of oral disease. With advances in medical treatment, CKD patients are living longer and require oral care. Chronic kidney disease is often accompanied by disturbances in mineral metabolism which are classified as their own clinical entity known as CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). CKD-MBD affects all aspects of bone physiology: bone volume, bone turnover and bone mineralization. Jaw bones affected with CKD-MBD can have important clinical implications for the survival and osseointegration of dental implants, success of bone regeneration therapy, and increased risk of bone loss in patients with periodontitis or risk of bone fracture. Assessment of bone turnover is the most important diagnostic tool to monitor progression of CKD-MBD. Bone biomarkers and radiographical examination of bone density may be particularly useful to both, diagnosis and monitoring of bone turnover. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a reliable method with many advantages over other radiographic methods can be used for analysis of jaw bone micro-architectural changes and may be of a great help in bone quality determination in CKD-MBD.

The aim of this study was to establish the number of roots and present the root canal configuration in the maxillary and mandibular premolar teeth, and evaluate the relations among these characteristics with gender and teeth position in the Serbian population using cone-beam computed tomography. A large number of edda (ethylenediamine- N, N’-diacetate)-type ligands and their corresponding metal complexes has been successfully synthesized. The study of teeth is of great interest to anthropologists, biologists, orthodontists and forensic scientists. The existence of sexual dimorphism in permanent teeth is a known phenomenon. Aim of this study was to analyze the presence of sexual dimorphism in the mesiodistal and vestibulolingual diameter of permanent teeth in the sample of Serbian population. Measurements were taken on plaster casts of 201 individuals of both sexes, ages between 18-25 years, using a digital caliper with 0.01 mm precision. The mesiodistal and vestibulolingual diameter of each permanent tooth was determined. A Student's t-test and a Mann-Whitney U test were used to statistically analyze the obtained results. There were no statistically significant differences in the teeth crown diameter between the right and left side of the same dental arch. Majority of the teeth examined were larger in male than in female patients. Statistically significant difference in the mesiodistal diameter of male and female maxillary and mandibular canines was found. The results of this study indicate that there are significant differences in teeth size between sexes in Serbian population. Males have larger diameters in teeth crowns than females. Canines show the greatest dimorphism.

We have studied the kinetics of the complex formation of gold(III) complexes, [Au(en)Cl2]+ (dichlorido( ethylendiamine)aurate(III)-ion) [Au(dach)Cl2] (dichloride(1,2-diaminocyclohexane)aurate(III)-ion) and [Au(bipy)Cl2]+ (dichlorido(2,2'-bipyridyl)aurate(III)-ion) with guanosine5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP). It was shown that 5'-GMP have a high affinity for gold(III) complex, which may have important biological implications, since the interactions of Au(III) with DNA are thought to be responsible for the anti-tumor activity. The [Au(bipy)Cl2]+ complex is more reactive than [Au(en)Cl2]+ or [Au(dach)Cl2]+. The activation parameters for all studied reactions suggest an associative substitution mechanism. The cytotoxicity of gold(III) complexes was tested on A549 human lung carcinoma epithelial cell line and was evaluated by cytotoxic (MTT and LDH test) and apoptotic assays. The results showed that all tested gold(III) complexes displayed cytotoxic effect on A549 cells. Among the tested gold (III) complexes, AuBIPY showed the best cytotoxic effects.

The aim of restorative dentistry is the successful restoration and maintenance of the health of the tooth by an adequate reconstructive treatment to re-establish the function of damaged pulp. The potential cytotoxicity of specific materials used in restorative dentistry has been widely studied, and the aim of this review article is to summaries and discuss the cytotoxicity of glass ionomer cements when they are in direct or indirect contact with the pulp tissue. Resin modified and metal reinforced glass ionomer cements, in comparison to conventional glass ionomer cements, showed higher cytotoxic effects on pulp cells in vitro. In vivo, the dentin barrier between toxic glass ionomer cements and the pulp cells may prevent pulp cell damage. Potentially toxic resin modified and metal reinforced glass ionomer cements should not be applied directly to the pulp tissue.

Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is an appropriate method for assessment of tissue vascularity at the level of microcirculation. It is non-invasive, painless and well accepted by the patients. The results are expressed in Perfusion Units (PU). The aim of this study was to estimate bone vascularity in the human posterior maxilla during implant insertion using LDF. Introduction: Accessory mental foramen (AMF) is defined as any additional opening on the anterior surface of the mandible body that is connected to the mandibular canal. The presence of AMF is an important anatomical parameter when planning the therapy to avoid neurovascular bundle injury and other complications. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides an accurate, three-dimensional determining of the position, its dimensions and the relation of AMF to the mental foramen (MF), as well as the distinction from nutritive openings. Material and Methods: The research was carried out at the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Kragujevac, as a retrospective study where 148 CBCT images were analyzed. The analysis of the position of AMF, the relation to and the distance from the MF were made on cross-sectional and axial images. Only those openings that have had a clear connection with the mandibular canal were counted as AMF. Results: AMF was present in 12 (8.11%) patients. In most cases, AMF was positioned superior to MF, in 27% of patients. There was no significant statistical difference between sex and the jaw side. The average distance of AMF from MF was 4.52 ± 2.21 mm. In most cases, AMF is round shaped (60%). The average value of the surface area is 1.62 ± 1.14 mm2. Discussion and Conclusion: Timely detection of AMF using CBCT contributes to the diagnosis and planning of appropriate dentures, surgical technique, preventing possible damage to adjacent anatomical structures, or some other therapy.

Background: We aimed to determine the socio-economic factors associated with unmet healthcare needs of the population aged 20 and over in Serbia. Methods: We used data from the 2013 National Health Survey (NHS) of the population of Serbia. We focused only on the data concerning the population aged 20 and over. The final sample thus included 13,765 participants. The logistic regression was used to examine the socio-economic factors associated with unmet health care needs. Results: According to the data obtained in this study, 26.2% of the population aged 20 and over reported unmet health care needs during the previous 12 months. The multivariate analysis shows that significant indicators of unmet healthcare needs include: gender, age, marital status, level of education, financial and employment status. Conclusion: Females, the elderly and those with the lowest levels of education and household income, as well as those who are divorced and unemployed are at highest risk of unmet healt...

Aim: We investigated the antitumor effects of zinc(II) complex with S-propyl thiosalicylic acid [Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2] in 4T1 murine breast cancer model. Results: The Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2 complex reduced primary tumor growth in vivo and induced tumor cell apoptosis. The Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2 complex disrupted the balance between pro- and antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family members in 4T1 cells and induced G1/S cell cycle arrest. The Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2 complex increased the percentage of p16, p21 and p27 positive 4T1 cells. There was a significantly decrease in expression of STAT3 and its targets c-Myc and cyclin D3 in 4T1 cells treated with the Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2 complex thus contributing to G1/S cell cycle arrest and/or apoptosis. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the Zn( S-pr-thiosal)2 complex restricted tumor growth through induction of mitochondrial-driven apoptosis and suppression of cell cycle progression.

Introduction/Objective. Serbia has been burdened with one of the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in Europe. The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with compliance to cervical cancer screening among women in the general population. Methods. The study used the data from 2013 National Health Survey of the population of Serbia. Logistic regression analysis was further used to examine demographic and socio-economic factors which affect the disparities in cervical cancer screening practices among the female population. Results. Every third woman (35.4%) has never done a Pap test in her lifetime. This study was aimed at evaluating dentin permeability after irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and final rinse with chlorhexidine (CHX), ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) + CHX, and new combination products: QMiX or MTAD. Roots of 60 maxillary incisors were randomly divided into five groups (n = 12) before instrumentation and irrigation with NaOCl according to the final irrigation regimen: CHX (2% CHX), EDTA + CHX (17% EDTA + 2% CHX), QMiX, MTAD, and control group (distilled water). After final irrigation, ten roots of each group were horizontally sectioned and dye penetration was evaluated in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Introduction. The aim of this study was to translate the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index into Serbian language and to evaluate its reliability in practice. Material and Methods. Following internationally established methods, adaptation of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index for children and adolescents in the Serbian speaking areas consisted of three steps: forward translation of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index, backward translation, and a pilot study. Results. A pilot study included 42 participants (21 males and 21 females), mean age of 12.0 ? 1.01 years. All items showed a corrected item-total correlation coefficient above >0.20 and the standardized Cronbach?s alpha coefficient was 0.80. All correlation coefficient values were positive. Lingua plicata (LP) is a condition characterized by an increased number of fissures and grooves at the central and lateral aspects of the dorsal surface of the tongue. LP is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, but the accumulation of food in the fissures and grooves can lead to focal glossitis and halitosis. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a complex disease in which the interaction of genetic, environmental, and microbial factors drives chronic intestinal inflammation. Gastrointestinal symptoms are predominant including pathological manifestations in the oral cavity, as well as extra-intestinal complications.
