Marrettcreatesrecordasfirstnon-playingflagcoach

IN the pre-season leading up to the 1971 Western Border Football League season West Gambier had some difficult decisionstomake.

Captain-coach Bill James had ended a five-year stint as club coachafterarrivingfromVFLclubMelbournein1966.

In that time he had turned a team of “easy-beats” and moulded them into a class act who were ready to move into thetopbracket.

West’s underage teams had achieved a few premierships during the mid to late 1960s and the number of talented players West churned out in the early 1960s was a telling factorbytheendofthedecade.

These included centreman Barrie Hudson, wingman John Beaton, full forward John Madden and utility players Peter FallasandChrisYeates.

They complemented the recruiting of full back Ken Bellinger, ruckman and defender Barry Ward, former Glencoe star wingman Melville Childs, half forward Bruce Grubb, centre halfbackDeanThomasandbackpocketBarryHillstone.

Giant ruckman Bryan Wilkinson had already set a high standard during his time at the club after he arrived in about 1966.

West’s recruiters pulled off a coup in the lead-up to the season.

In 1970 they had picked up Carlton’s 1968 VFL premiership centre half forward Bill Bennett, who had fallen out with coach Ron Barassi but then convinced Bennett’s premiership teammate at former, rover Terry Board to join West. He had had finished a two-year stint as North coach and switched to Westasaplayer

ButthebigquestionwaswhowouldreplaceJamesascoach?

James was an astute leader and his on-field leadership was firstrate.

He had agreed to continue as a player so his skills would not belostcompletely

West then announced a coach completely from left field and it surprised everyone when former Port Adelaide premiership ruckman and East champion coach and player PeterMarrettatage44,wasappointedasnon-playingcoach.

He arrived at East in 1955 where he coached and won a Mail Medal and league goal kicking and in-between coached SouthGambier

He retired in 1960 but had continued his links with football, becominganumpireandadministrator

TheMarrettappointmentgaveWestthebestoftwoworlds–firstly Marrett’s football nous and clever tactics would be complemented on-field by the leadership of Bill James who wasappointedcaptain.

West won their way into the grand final against East after defeating the highly fancied South Gambier in the preliminaryfinal.

East Gambier had appointed former Fitzroy forward and ruckmanGaryLazarusandfinishedintopposition.

It was the first time since the league began in 1964 that two MountGambierteamswouldbeopposedagainsteachother in a grand final, which was played at Coleraine’s Silvester Oval.

WITH G GRREEEENNWWOOOOD D

Perhaps because the match was played at Coleraine and there were no Victorian clubs in the senior grand final, the grand final had the lowest attendance since the league started in 1964. All the pre-match discussion centred around East’s tough man MaxJochinke.

Jochinke had been recruited earlier that year from Jeparit, Victoria, and had made a big hit in the league, in more ways thanone.

hisaccuratekickingkeptthescoreboardtickingover

Importantly, East went goal-less for the third term and were introubleatthelastchange.

West attacked again and again but could not put East away withYeates,BennettandStephensallmissingeasyshots.

His tough, aggressive play, either in ruck or at centre half forward had been the linchpin upon which East had risen to thetopoftheladder

Former East captain-coach Tracey Braidwood had agreed to play on under Lazarus and he gave East plenty of experience in the full back position with youngster Barry Stevens at centrehalfback.

WestalsohadformerGeelongcaptainand1963premiership ruckmanJohnYeatesinthesidetosupportWilkinsoninruck. Itwasanimposingline-up.

As the teams lined-up for the opening bounce West’s Barry Ward and East’s Max Johincke were seen exchanging words and a fewshoulder bumpsat centre half forward, then stood virtually eye-to-eye as the two heavyweights of each side triedtoasserttheirauthority

Going with the breeze Bill James soon took control around the packs aided by some fine ruck work by Bryan Wilkinson butWestfailedtomakeanyimpressionatfirst. Then Jochinke showed his talent with some fine marks and kickedtheopeningtwogoals.

John Yeates took a great grab in the goalsquare and then the highly-rated West half forward Bruce Grubb goaled from a long way out with massive torpedo punt to keep the Roos in the game and level the scores as the quarter time siren sounded.

West4.2,East4.2

Many claim it was the turning point in the game when in a tussle for possession in East’s forward line Jochinke fell in front of West back pocket Barry Hillstone whose knees cannonedintoJochinke’sback. He was in the hands of the trainers for some time but remained on the ground. At half time the ground announcer said: “Is there a doctor at the ground? Could they please make their way to the East Gambier change-rooms?

Everyone knew Jochinke was in trouble and cheers went up fromWestsupporters. Jochinkedidnotreturninthesecondhalf

In the meantime, in the second quarter West was clearly on top around the ball and across centre where John Beaton, Barrie Hudson and to a lesser degree Melville Childs were in control.

Brian Lane was having a close tussle with Childs but Beaton was running riot on the other wing and provided plenty of supply to Grubb whose aerial work and strong body work around the flank pushed West to a two-point lead at half time.

West8.3,East7.7.

Young East centre half back Barry Stevens was having a great tussle with Bill Bennett at centre half forward and this clash was worth the admission fee on its own as each player tried togaintheascendancy

With no Jochinke ahead of centre East were a little undermanned and West slammed on three quick goals to takeacommanding23-pointleadatthefinalchange.

Grubb had been in everything for West while Wilkinson and Yeates were now clearly on top of the East ruckmen David Clark,WigleyandGaryLazarus.

Rover Terry Board turned in his best game for the Roos and wasexplosiveinthefinalterm.

Beaton was probably the player of the finals series, playing dominant roles in the semi and preliminary finals to be West’s best in each game and then again turned on another topclassperformanceinthegrandfinaltobesecondbeston thegroundbehindWilkinson.

David Clark, Gary Lazarus still got plenty of the ball around the ground while Brian Lane took the honours on his centre wing.

East Gambier knew they had to get off to a strong start against North Gambier in the A Grade 1st semi finalandtheydidjustthat.

ItwastheBulldogsthatlookedseledandcomposed in the opening minutes of the first quarter, working the ball with paence in aack and applying good defensive pressure when they didn’t have the ball to forcetheTigersintoerror

Casey Horrigan dominated the opening term, neng 10 from 12 as she connually fond space on the baseline, while the work rate of Tarsh McCallum was exceponal as east took mulple passes to find a shoongopon.

At the other end, those scoring opportunies were coming courtesy of some strong defensive work, parcularly from Morgan Amy, who played the front posion on Grace Pos, forcing balls over the baselineandalsogengherhandsonsomemisfiring feeds.

But while the Bulldogs set up a four goal buffer early, by the first break, North had seled into their work –Noni McConnell winning the ball back late to see the scoresedat10-all.

The second quarter was all about the Tigers and was basicallywherethegamewaswonandlost.

Pos and Macey Griffith looked a different combinaon in the second, aer a shaky opening quarter and their 16 from 19 was crical in seng up whatwasamatchwinninglead.

East was sll finding their goalers in good space, courtesy of McCallum’s hard running, and the willingness of Renee Henke and Horrigan to stay on the move to try and unsele McConnell and Stella Mobbs.

Mel Renko and Brianna Walters were also key in the resurgencefortheTigersastheyhitthecirclestrongly and passed into their shooters with pinpoint accuracy, while Lauran Norman was also key in transion as she drove strongly through the mid court. A RESERVE – NORTH GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD

It just wasn’t Casterton Sandford’s day in the A reserve 1st semi final. It started with a serious injury to star defender Sharna Fidler, saw accurate shooter PaigeMurrellforcedfromthecourtwithinjuryaswell which saw the half me scoreline basically pung victoryoutofreach.

It was a 16 goal buffer at half me as the Cats looked to patch together a combinaon and while their

Filder’s loss was immense as she is the queen of the intercept and had built a strong working relaonship with Claire Foster and throwing that end of the court out of balance allowed the classy Tigers shoong combinaon of Alisha Bryan and Alycia Pitson go to work.

The script reversed in the second, despite neither sidemakingnaypersonnelorposionalchanges. Aer an inaccurate opening quarter Caitlin Carraill and Elysha Collins converted 13 from 15 as West worked their way back to see a 23-all half me scoreline.

Those opportunies for the West shooters came courtesyofanimproveddefensiveeffortfromBrooke Holmes and Daena Wombwell and with more rebounding opportunies than the first quarter, Wombwell was able to use her height to great advantagetosecuretheturnovers.

As things stand heading into this weekend West Gambier hasa3-1recordoverMillicent intheAGradecompetition.

It has been tight every time and Millicent’s sole victory cameinRound15.

It is a rematch of last year’s title decider and the two competition pacesetters again look set to produce a tight contest that could go eitherway.

West has Sarah Ritter at goal shooter and she has proved an unstoppable force in 2023 and the fact she can play a strong holding game but also nail shots from distance makes her a tough match up but Millicent keeper Portia McRae is coming off a good month, peaking at the right

timeandshewillensureRitter earnseveryshotongoal.

Ritter is a smart player but is fed by an even smarter player in Lisa McGregor, who has controlled the Roos frontline for more than a decade, and when she is not delivering the ball with accuracy to Ritter she is earning her own ball andfinishingaccurately

McGregor also does a mountainofworkintransition high up the court and the Saints have a couple of options to limit her influence in Lauren Van Eeden and K i m m i T i n c k n e l l , a n d regardless of which of these tight defenders gets the job, the other one could be tasked with a role on the defensive wing to pressure the feeds

and try and win the ball back before McGregor and Ritter evengetalookin.

At the other end, the Roos defensive combination of Amy Cram and Jade Ritter work so well in synergy that even when it looks like a goaler is in space, they rarely are.

The duo will be looking to deny Saints shooter Tabatha Sandersontoomuchballclose to the post and that doesn’t just mean getting in good position on the tall shooter but also keeping the ball out ofDemiVerbena’shands.

Verbena is deadly on the feed and works the angels well with her mid court to open up opportunities for Sanderson at the post and she can hit

A-RESERVE 1.00PM COURT 1

long shots so leaving her to her own devices is just not an option.

The mid courts are well matched as well with Roos centre Tara Bryant having another stellar season, alongside her premiership team mates Mikaela Horrigan andZoeMalseed.

Theirheadtoheadbattlewith Lisa Duldig, Daisy Tunkin and Lillie Paul will go a long way to deciding the final outcome, as the team that controls possession and shows patience will be the team ahead on the scoreboard whenitcountsmost.

Millicent’s A Reserve line-up has onlylostonegamefortheseason and that was to their 2nd semi finalopponentWestGambier And while the Saints finished clearly on top, the A Reserve competition was tightly contested and there were not manyrunawayvictoriesforanyof thetopteams.

Clearly, Donna Denton looms large – the multiple A Grade association best and fairest and premiership player, brings not just her talent but her leadership to the court and she is the architect of everything that happens in the offensive third for Millicent.

Racheal Langford, West coach and goal keeper, will take on that task and she has the smarts to try and curb Denton but will need her team mates further up the court to pressure the incoming ball for Denton will have a field day

Of course, it is not just about DonnaDenton, shehastwomore than capable shooting partners –daughter Abby Denton, who has beautiful vision and delivers the ball well, as well as happy to take on the long range shot if required and Rylee Kenny, who is back after a season away from the court, with her speed arguably herbiggestweapon.

Maddie Milich will be looking deny whoever her goal attack opponent is and the young defender has taken all before her in her first season of A Reserve netball.

Milich is tight checking and hard working and while she appears unassuming she is a fierce competitor and reads the play well giving her the chance to pull in a number of interceptions and with Ellie Xanthopolous also able to play a similar role in circle defence, the Roos are blessed withoptions.

VAt the other end of the court there is plenty of scoring power as well with the Roos shooting combination of Tahlia Earl, who has had a stellar season in her return to Malseed Park, and new recruit Gracie Peterson who has great timing on her moves and finishesaccurately

Add to that the talent of junior playerLucySimpsonandtheRoos will not be worried about being abletohitthescoreboard.

Of course they won’t have it all their own way with a group of talented Saints defenders ready and waiting to make life hard –

Alice Pratt is a tight checking defender; Nikeisha Facey also denies time and space to her opponents, while Keeley Stuart and Edie Easterby bring the athleticism and willingness to hunttheinterception.

The mid courts are well matched and both teams will be looking to get on top in that area to give their team the advantage and

morescoringopportunities.

Millicent has Jackie Sunderland, whousesherspeedandsmartsto dominate, while Alana Craig is super reliable, drives hard and has a great defensive mindset when the ball needs to be won back.

West has Anna Bosco in the centre, who runs hard both ways, while captain Carlee Ransom has alwayshadaknackforfindingthe circle’s edge and delivers accurately, while Chelsea Tremelling is the ultimate wing defender who gets to balls she just shouldn’t, while Charlotte Scott is just as defensively minded as she is offensively minded and her work rate is secondtonone.

Much will come down to which shooter – Denton or Earl – erns the most scoring opportunities, with the Saints to win in a tight one.

The B Grade competition has been one of the most closely contested this season and the battle for the first grand final spot between Millicent and Casterton Sandford looms as am arm wrestle of epic proportions.

The Saints have two major headaches – tall cats shooter Shelby Nolte, who has got better every game she has played this season, and Trictia Cleary – the star goal attack who controls Casterton Sandford’s offence and feeds Nolte

with pin point accuracy With rising star Chelsea Hulm also available to take a shooting role, the Cats have no scoring issues whatsoever

C-GRADE

The C Grade 2nd semi final sees South Gambier taking on East Gambier with both sides bringing mixture of youth and experiencetothecontest.

The Demons finished minor premiers and have a versatile line-up.

Young defenders Chelsea Dunn and Alannah Clayton have played much of their junior careers together and h ave a g re at wo r k i n g relationship, working hard to hold front position and strong intheair

Both can also fill a shooting role, and the late season absence of Ella Egan due to study commitments has seen Clayton mainly playing in the shooting circle in the second halfoftheseason.

Egan could be back on court this weekend, though, giving

coach Larnka Foran the headache of who to play, with Brooke Winterfield having beenthemainstayofshooting duties in 2023, as well as being a valuable on court leader

Dunn and Clayton also have plenty of support at the defensive end, with Jess McGregor bringing her tenacity to the contest with her close checking style of defence and impressive work overtheshot.

Mel Kuhl can also take a circle defence role although she has done much of her damage in the mid court in 2023, alongsidesisterAshKuhl, who has made the wing attack role her own with strong driving and a willingness to keep reoffering.

The defence is also supported by Jade Jennings, a specialist

Vpressure applied to he Cats feeders and that task will fall to the likes of skipper Kalli Brown, Krystal Coghlan and Amy-Lee Byrne.

Their match ups with the likes of Amber Balzan, Kerri Harvey, Anna Whillas and Dakota Crawford will go a long way to deciding the finaloutcome.

The Cats defensive end will be run by Emma Grigg – a tight checking defender who contests everything. She has great support from

first time Cat Jess Cousins and teenager Sarah Richardson and they will need to be relentless in theirpressuretoforeerrors from the clinical Millicent frontline as they connect with goalers Nicole Domaschenz – the Saints own tall shooter – and Kate PattenandJosieLang.

Both sides have a simple task – limiting the scoring opportunities for the respective teams’ tall timber and whoever does that best will win – the cats inatightcontest.

Of course, the Bulldogs have an impressive mid court of their own, with coach Zena Creek playing the Dalton role asoncourtgeneral.

Tamara Janeway can fill any of the three centre court roles, while Grace Ferguson has had an outstanding season and Chloe Lines brings the defensive heat, with 15 & under player Skye Wilson also anoptioninthemidcourtand

Of course, defensively, Brooklyn Jean is the key for the Bulldogs. The young goal defender reads the play well, intercepts with monotonous regularity and is unlikely to be outrebounded and she combines well with Lines and veteranDanielaWaters.

Katie Gaffney, Megan Wilson and Millie Button ensure the Bulldogs have plenty of shooting options to test the Demons defence line and accuracy will be a big deciding factorinthismatch.

Much like the B Grade competition, this has been a tightly contested grade and while this match will be no different, the Demons should book the first grand final spot for2023.

The Tigers have an abundance of talent and the eight players, with Luca Roulstone ruled out through injury, are also incredibly versatile, giving coachCarolineWakefieldplenty ofoptionstogetthejobdone.

In the shooting circle she has the smarts and composure of Macey Griffith. Griffith sets up everything that happens in the attack end and combines well

with the height of Stella Mobbs or Ava Collins, as well as Cara Nulty, who adds another dimensiontotheshootingcircle withherspeedandtiming.

Brown, who can also head into the shooting circle if required, has had a breakout season and has had put in some stellar performances on the attacking wing where she drives hard and feeds with creativity and precision.

Millicent and North Gambier face off in the 15 & under A 2nd semi final with their last contest seeing the Saints win by 12goals.

It will see strong holding Millicent shooter Kalani Dunn battling it out with tough defender Kelsie Anderson and Saints goal attack Mylee Lynch, who has great timing on her moves and seems to find space where there is none, will battle it out with athletic defender RubyMitchell.

Both mid courts have speed to burn, both have a good defensive mindset and can the ball back and both are safe with ball in hand. The sides are evenly matched and North does have a win over Millicent this season and it is an interesting clash in that both teams basically have a starting seven that they work with, utilising support from their 15 & u n d e r B s q u a d s i f required.

The two mid courts are also evenly matched with Piper Paul, Bell Coghlan and Mia Gysbers going head to head with Maggie

NorthGambierhasdominatedthe15& Under B grade in 2023 and start warm favourites in this weekend’s top of the tablesemifinalwithMillicent.

The Tigers have lost only one game this season but the last tie these two sides met – in round 16 – North only got the chocolates by four goals, setting up a intriguing clash this weekend to secure thefirstgrandfinalspotupforgrabs.

North has quality all over the court startingwiththedefensivecombination ofPennyColemanandIsabellaStafford.

Both are tight checking defenders who also love to read the play and take interceptions higher up the court and

both rebound strongly if the missed shotscometheirway.

The Tigers then have a dynamic mid court to transition the ball through the courtwithZoeDavison, whoalsodoesa great job defensively, Lacey Allen, who can play either wing and get the job done and the speed and smarts of Lily Brookwhocontrolsthecentre.

The finishing work is left to Mia Griffith and Claire Mitchel in the shooting circle fortheTigers.

Griffithhasgreattimingontheleadand is an on court leader, while Mitchell is a master of finding space, holds strongly andisanaccuratefinisher

The Millicent line-up is also full of quality and tenacious defender Jeda Hibberd anchors the Saints defensive end, combining with the likes of Eva Crowe, Lexi Nicholls and Asha Gysbers, who bring athleticism and an ability to readtheplaytotheirroles.

And with Crowe, Nicholls and Gysbers also able to run a mid court role, coach Lisa Duldig has plenty of versatility in herline-up.

At the other end, Tahnee Grosser takes control of the attacking end, using her speed to great effect, passing with precision and finishing accurately and

justasHibberdleadsthedefensiveend, Grosser is the leader of the offensive endofthecourt.

Grosser has built good connections with Ella Matthews and Emily Walker, with Walker, in her first season as a Saint, really growing into the goal shooter role and giving her team mates astrongtarget.

Millicent’s 13 & Under A team is undefeated heading into the weekend’s 2nd semi final against North Gambier and they have basicallybeenuntroubled.

Amarlie Thomson and Indi Coghlan are an outstanding shooting combination, combining the strength on the hold of Thomson, whoisalsoanaccuratefinisher, with the speed and long range shooting ofCoghlan.

Lindy Van Eeden is another swing player, working her magic in goals or the mid court, while defensively, LolaFergusonandAudreyGalambos combine well to make life tough for everyshootingcombination.

And the Millicent defensive duo will need to be at their best when they take on Carey Grivell, who makes strong position and finishes

Grace Collins is another X factor for the Tigers – she can getthe job done at wing attack, provides a strong target in goal shooter and is also a strong defensive option at goal keeper

Ava Halloran and Amelie Adam are the other defensive options for coach Rosie Collins. Halloran loves
