For although water always seeks and finds the easiest way, the ‘Waterland man’ will take the most difficult way if he has to – depending on what he wants. By working together with the water one moment and then fighting it the next. This interaction with water has marked both man and landscape. Waterland’s arteries are filled with water. In the battle against excessively high or low water levels, the Ir. D.F. Wouda pumping station from 1920 is still one of the beating hearts. The Wouda pumping station was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and is the world’s largest steam-operated pumping station still in operation. The four mighty steam engines in the huge engine room are so powerful that they could drain the entire Sneekermeer lake in two days. Together with the adjacent Teroelster pool, they keep water levels in Waterland in balance. The Wouda pumping station has a special visitor centre where young and old can learn about water management with the aim of increasing awareness about water. The Wouda pumping station has been nominated several times as the best day out in Friesland.

Go with the flow and follow the eels in Waterland van Friesland. As a result of sustainable eel management in Friesland, prosperous times are slowly returning. The eel has a rich history in Waterland van Friesland. During the golden age of eel fishing, around sixteen Frisian boats would sail to London six times a year to sell live eels there. In 2009, this tradition was partly restored with the reconstruction of eel fishing barge Korneliske Ykes II. You can sail on it, if you like. Or come along on Freerk Visserman’s electric ‘whisper’ boat, one of the last Frisian professional fishermen. Freerk supplies the eels directly to restaurants in and around Heeg. According to experts, the Frisian lakes are home to the most delicious eels of all. Taste them and judge for yourself...

The Frisian lakes that everyone enjoys now haven’t always been there. There are several stories about their origins. Were they created by humans? Did nature lend a hand? There are also exciting sagas and legends, such as those of the sisters Tsjûke and Marchje, where the name of the Tjeukemeer, the largest lake in Friesland, probably originates from. Going from A to B overland around 1400? Impossible! The water was the highway then. Waterland was far too ‘soggy’ at the time to move over land. This gave rise to a sophisticated network of waterways, which now everyone can enjoy in their own way. You can even dive below the water in your car. In the past twenty years, five beautiful aqueducts have been built. So cars and boats are no longer in each other’s way and all traffic can flow unimpeded. This provides

a wonderful, idiosyncratic image with little boats and sails that seem to glide by on dry land. Perhaps the most beautiful is to be found at Woudsend: the Ie-Akwadukt that crosses the river Ie.

SKÛTSJESILEN SNEEKERMEER

In July and August, traditionally ‘skûtsjesilen’ takes place on the Frisian lakes. These are Friesland’s iconic sailing races. Not only is it a great experience to witness the battle between these traditional cargo ships, but often the entire village or city where the competition takes place is in a festive mood for days. Join in on this experience of a sporting competition in which each team seeks how best to harness both water and wind.

WOOD SAW MILL DE RAT

Like water flows from high elevation to low, so air flows from high pressure to low. The energy of flowing air is captured in the sails of wood sawmill De Rat in IJlst, where logs are sawn into planks. The UNESCO cultural heritage craft of miller has been carried out at the Rat for around 300 years already. A visit to this wood sawmill brings history back to life. Smell the aroma of freshly sawn wood and hear the pounding of the saw frames and the swishing of the sails. Wind energy at its finest.

DROWNED LAND ELAHUIZEN

In 1680, the wind drove water levels so high that the water drowned an entire village. Sail to the black-yellow cardinal buoy in the Frisian lake the Fluessen to see where the church of Elahuizen used to be. Don’t get too close, it’s very shallow here! And listen... do you still hear the church bell ringing?

CLIFFS OF GAASTERLAND

On the shores of the IJsselmeer in Gaasterland you will find the only three cliffs in the Netherlands: Oudemirdum, Mirns and the Rode Klif (red cliff) near Warns. They originated in the Ice Age when the land in Gaasterland was pushed up by glaciers, sometimes as high as 13 metres. Admittedly, the cliffs in Gaasterland are not as impressive as the famous White Cliffs of Dover or the Irish Cliffs of Moher, but they are real cliffs nonetheless. What’s more, you can make a selfie at the edge of the cliff without worrying about a tragic outcome. So why don’t you go see for yourself? And enjoy the view from the cliff over the IJsselmeer to the distant horizon.

R AISED VILLAGE ALLINGAWIER

Before the advent of the sea dikes, the coastal areas of Friesland and Groningen were difficult to reach, barely passable and even dangerous, because they were flooded every day. Yet they still attracted a lot of people. Maybe because there was food in abundance. The ‘Waterlanders’ reduced the risk of flooding by building dwelling mounds (a terp). The small ‘terp’ village of Allingawier is a lovely example of this. The ancient village originated in the early Middle Ages.

There’s no better option for anyone wanting to experience the life of times gone by than in Allingawier and the museum village found here. The village exudes the tranquillity and atmosphere of an age gone by, Allingawier was once nominated as one of the ten most beautiful spots in the Netherlands.

they are paved to form a path for cycling or walking. Nowadays, these paths invite you to relax and enjoy the outdoors. One lovely towpath to cycle or walk along is the one at Tjerkwerd along the Workumertrekvaart.

Snake along on this thousand-yearold seawall. A ‘gulden’ or ‘golden’ spot for cycling, walking or horse riding. With its tranquillity, space and rich cultural history, there is plenty to experience in this north-western part of the Wadden Sea coast. Did you know for example that this is the cradle of the Mennonites? And that Pier Gerlofs Donia, better known as ‘Grutte Pier’, was born in this region? Follow in his footsteps and go on a voyage of discovery.

BEND OF MOLKWAR

Meander along the IJsselmeer shores on the ‘Noorderdijk’, between Hindeloopen and Stavoren, and stop at the ‘Bocht fan Molkwar’. This is a nature reserve managed by It Fryske Gea, the provincial association for nature conservation in Friesland, near the village of Molkwerum, and a true paradise for birds and birdwatchers. In this natural ‘still life’ painting, it’s the wind and the birds that provide the motion. Indulge your ears with the sounds of nature. Because – weird but true – the twittering and quacking have a calming and soothing effect. Although birdwatching can also be a busy pastime. See that western marsh harrier floating gracefully over the reed beds looking for a bite to eat that isn’t paying attention? Or spot the common teal, common goldeneye, bearded reedling and the great black-backed gull from this hide overlooking the IJsselmeer.

TOWPATH TJERKWERD

Are you familiar with them? Those delightful narrow little paths along the waterways? They are our towpaths. Barges were towed forward along these paths. This was commonly done with horse and guide, but people also did the pulling. Most of the towpaths have been preserved and are freely accessible. Sometimes

THE AFSLUITDIJK

Is the iconic Afsluitdijk the start or end of your journey along the waterways and waterworks? The fact is, you really shouldn’t miss it, as you must see the Afsluitdijk, even if only once in your life. This 32-kilometre-long dike has tamed the salty Zuiderzee into the fresh IJsselmeer. Its construction was a feat of gnarly warriors against the sea. During the Second World War, the Afsluitdijk was one of the few places to remain unoccupied during the German invasion. Now we are fighting against sea level rise and the dike is being reinforced and renewed. In short, the Afsluitdijk is a 32-kilometre-long adventure. Find out more? We are ‘grutsk’, or proud, that almost all of Waterland van Friesland is part of a ‘National Landscape’, a landscape of national importance, of which there are twenty in the Netherlands. In 2006, this area was designated the National Landscape of Southwest Friesland (Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest Fryslân) by the Dutch government. Why? Here specifically you will find a unique cultural-historic combination of natural elements and landscape characteristics.

This creates an endless palette of possibilities: walking along a former sea dike, cycling over natural undulations, canoeing or sailing through the woods on the river Luts, enjoying panoramic views, water sports on the Frisian lakes and touring along the outstretched IJsselmeer shores. four different landscapes in one day In Waterland van Friesland you can criss-cross through four completely different landscapes in any one day: the clay soils, the peat and lake area, Gaasterland and the IJsselmeer shores. They are all unique and have their own story. Their history is sometimes very easily recognisable; salt-water shells can still be found on the IJsselmeer shoreline for example, as a reminder of the former Zuiderzee. Most often however, the landscape tells a more subtle story. If you pay attention, you’ll discover more and more. THE CLAY SOILS

Discoveries by boat, bicycle or on foot We highly recommend exploring the National Landscape by boat and experiencing nature from the lakes, waterways and ponds. Water and wind add an extra dimension to your experience. For cycling and walking tours, the marked waypoints are very helpful. To make a trip you only need to know the numbers of the waypoints in this sophisticated network. In Waterland van Friesland there are no less than 817 kilometres of marked cycling routes and some 1,000 kilometres of hiking routes. For marked waypoint routes and maps, drop in at one of our Tourist Information Centres. Flamingos on the IJsselmeer shores The National Landscape is a paradise for birdwatchers. There are several birdwatching shelters, such as De Ral near Piaam and It Swin near Elahuizen. Even flamingos can sometimes be spotted on the shores of the IJsselmeer near the Steile Bank nature reserve. They arrive from Germany, just across the border from the Achterhoek region in the east of the Netherlands. The pink birds are here in late summer looking for food. The numbers vary per season: sometimes there are just a few, but sometimes there are dozens. You may discover different kinds of flamingo, such as Chilean, European and occasionally even a Caribbean or small flamingo among them.

A new electric-only route, opened in 2019, connecting the Oudegaasterbrekken, via the Blauwhuister Poelen, to the Bolswardervaart. Not really a route, but more of a crossing to sail the Frisian lakes to Bolsward or IJlst with ease. Enjoy the peace and relax in an electric sloop. Or use your muscle power on a paddleboard or canoe for a more sporty journey.

Dreamy villages with their churches, pubs and typically shaped farms. Intimate Frisian cities. Woodlands, lakes and streaky skies that might have been taken from a masterpiece. The Saint Odulf path ticks all the boxes for hikers, and links up more than 260 km of provincial beauty. Walk either the whole route or one of the fifteen sub-sections.

There hasn’t been an official eleven cities skating tour since 1997. It has been many years since it froze long enough or hard enough to organise the ‘mother of all skating tours’. But what does start every year on Whit Monday is the 11-city cycling tour. At 235 kilometres long, it’s also quite a challenge. Especially if you encounter headwinds and a rainstorm. That’s why the Helftstedentocht cycle tour is a nice alternative. It’s about 90 kilometres long and starts in Bolsward.

These beautiful routes run along the three cliffs of Gaasterland: the only cliffs in the Netherlands. Enjoy the view over the IJsselmeer at the Oudemirdumer Cliff. Take a paddle at the Mirnserklif or learn more about ‘the Battle of Warns’ at the Rode Klif. Choose between a hiking route or two different cycling routes.

There’s so much we can tell you about this route: enjoy the beautiful views along the way and the crossings you make with a ferry across the water. One particularly delightful feature you pass is the Langweerder Mill, the only mill in the Netherlands that is both a polder-drainage mill and a rye mill. But the best thing is, you can spend the night in it. An experience unlike any B&B or hotel.

This route gives plenty of room to all water sports enthusiasts. Instead of waiting for bridges, you can just keep on sailing, and enjoy the road traffic that seems to simply disappear under your boat. You start and finish in Stavoren, one of the famous eleven Frisian cities, with this 76 kilometre sailing route along these five hydraulic engineering gems.

Gaasterland feels like a totally different Waterland van Friesland. Standing on one of the three ridges along the IJsselmeer, you’ll have beautiful panoramic views all the way to the horizon. And thanks to the centuries-old woodlands it’s nice and ‘smout’, or sheltered. The rolling hills make you almost forget you’re in Friesland. The cliffs of Gaasterland Until 1932, small stretches of the Gaasterland shore were continually washed away by the waves of the Zuiderzee. Three 'cliffs' were formed as a result. This was halted upon construction of the Afsluitdijk, giving nature the opportunity to develop. On the six metre high Oudemirdumerklif for example, where you'll find more than 200 plant species.

with a guide Guided walks are regularly organised in the Rijsterbos and in the dragonfly nature reserve of the Wyldemerk. You will find the full schedule on our website.

There are 30 kilometres of bridle paths and trails for horse-drawn carriages in the Gaasterland woods just waiting to be explored on horseback. Along the way you will come across resting places especially for horse and rider. Several riding stables offer packages for equestrian experiences.

You can get a handy overview map with all waypoints for cycling and walking at one of our Tourist Information Centres.

Thanks to the former Zuiderzee, some plants even like seawater. You may also spot a badger who lives in a sett in the cliff side. Look up and who knows, you might see a ‘flying door’, a nickname for the white-tailed eagle, due to its wingspan of up to 2.5 metres.

Wandering around the Rijsterbos Rijsterbos woods are among the most famous in Friesland. The largest woods of the rolling Gaasterland region are ideal for ‘kuieren’, or strolling around. Rijsterbos woods were created by Amsterdam Regent Hiob de Wildt in 1676. This would have been the setting for ladies parading in bustling skirts along star-shaped wooded lanes. Nowadays,

it’s woods are ideal for families. An ideal walk around the ‘Rysterbosk’ is to follow the red or blue routes. But perhaps even more fun is simply to wander along the old paths and suddenly be surprised by the panorama of the IJsselmeer from Mirnserklif.

A nature reserve for dragonflies There is only one nature reserve especially for dragonflies in the whole of Europe, and that is the Wyldemerk in Gaasterland. Because of its flat and shallow water, the IJsselmeer is perfect for beginners, but it’s also good for an experienced freestyler like me. The best spots on the IJsselmeer are Kornwerderzand, the Mirnserklif and

Workum. At Workum you can get going with southerly, northerly and westerly winds. Mirnserklif is perfect for southerly, south-easterly and westerly winds. Is there an easterly wind? Then go to Kornwerderzand. Do you want to see me fly through the air? Then come to Workum. That’s my homespot.

Nature reserves along the Frisian IJsselmeer shores Did you know that the nature along the IJsselmeer shores is so valuable that no less than 5,000 hectares of nature reserve was designated as a natural monument in 1991? It is an incredibly varied area with grasslands, reed beds, swamps, shell dunes and shallows. The natural monument is especially important for the countless birds that rest, moult, breed and eat there. Guided excursions are organised regularly in the many nature reserves. Old-school windsurfing is back! This sport can be practised at various places along the IJsselmeer shores. If you are a beginner, it is better to opt for calmer waters such as Kornwerderzand. Here the water is rather flat and quite shallow. Book yourself a windsurfing lesson and you’ll be amazed at your progress within an hour! After a few lessons and plenty of practice on your board, you’ll be manoeuvring and possibly even using a trapeze to surf.

Take a beautiful walk along the IJsselmeer shoreline’s lovely Zuiderzee path: one of the Long-distance Walks (LAW 8) in the Netherlands. No less than 5 stages of this 400-kilometre-long route pass through Waterland van Friesland.

Bring the bike in the train? Great idea! Follow the ‘7 jewels of Waterland van Friesland’ route in each city and wander from one story to the next. You may of course also view and experience every city by water. Do this either with your own boat or a rented one, or with an organised tour. But you’ll definitely enjoy yourself. STAVOREN ‘High and low tide?’ The former Zuiderzee and Hanseatic city of Stavoren had both the best of times and the worst of times. HINDELOOPEN

Hindeloopen, one of the eleven famous Frisian cities, was once a closed community. However,

commercial shipping gave it a strong connection with Amsterdam. This contributed to the city developing its own language, attire and Hindelooper art. Walking through Hindeloopen now, you will feel like you’re in an open-air museum. There are so many treasures on display that Lonely Planet calls Hindeloopen a ‘top experience’. What do you think?

WORKUM According to master painter Jopie Huisman, Workum was paradise on earth. In his words: “Beyond the horizon of Workum, the earth stops. For me heaven could never be more beautiful than this.” Just look up and see all the different façades. The frontage of the city is designated as a protected cityscape.

BOLSWARD

Not the biggest of the eleven Frisian cities, but a gem all the same, for

the former Hanseatic city of Bolsward has preserved its historical riches and treasures well. Take a look at the Broerekerk and you’ll understand straight away why the city centre has been designated a protected cityscape.

Many have memories of IJlst through the wooden skates, tools and toys of Nooitgedagt. The city has a

protected cityscape, partly due to its unique and characteristic ‘overtuinen’ waterside gardens.

Welcome to the smallest of the eleven famous Frisian cities, a real jewel. Formerly of serious strategic importance, because of its location on the waterway towards the former Zuiderzee and the Hanseatic cities on the IJssel. Partly because of this, the city developed into a fortified city in the 17th century. And this can still be clearly seen and heard during the cannon shooting event.

A ‘Trojan horse’ for Sloten

SLOTEN MUSEUM The city’s museum is located in the middle of Sloten in the former city hall dating back to 1759-1761. Here you will enjoy a revealing view of the city’s history. In the attic space you’ll find the ‘Laterna Magica’ collection: the most beautiful collection of magic lanterns in the Netherlands. Moving images were made by placing two magic lantern images one after the other. The magic lantern is the forerunner of photographs, films, television and smartphones, which we consider to be very normal nowadays.

ON THE ROAD WITH THE TOWN CRIER Join town crier Pieter Haringsma in the summer. He will show you all the wonderful spots in Sloten and explain them in visual terms. This tour of Sloten starts at the Sloten Museum and will also take you to De Kaai corn mill and the Reformed church. The walk ends with a beautiful canal cruise through Sloten’s many waterways and the surrounding area towards the Slotermeer.

DE LEMSTER GATE OF SLOTEN If you sail into Sloten from Lemmer, the wonderful scene that greets you is the windmill together with the Lemster Gate, a vista often captured in photographs. In the course of time, the land-based gates of the fortified city of Sloten were cleared, but the water-based gates remained. There’s a pillory at the foot of the Lemster Gate. This recalls the failed invasion of the Spaniards in 1588.

WHITE LAUNDRY When you visit Sloten, 9 out of 10 times you’ll likely see laundry hanging on the clothesline along the defensive moat. This is an homage to the ‘bleaches’ of the past. This was a grassy commons area on which freshly washed linen was left to dry in the sun.

THE PEEWIT FOUNTAIN Water is the source of all life. That’s the story that the 11fountains Peewit fountain and the Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 project in Sloten want to tell us. And the name? It comes from the bird that the girl is cupping in her hand: the peewit is a bird species that is threatened in Friesland.

THUNDERING CANNONS Sloten is a true fortified city that still has an active town crier. During the peak season, Pieter calls the city together each Friday evening for the traditional firing of the canons on the grounds of De Kaai corn mill. He gives an enthusiastic explanation of how it all works. The canons are fired by the city’s Civic Guard, in full traditional costume. Come and watch – if you dare.

DE KAAI CORN MILL Near the Lemster Gate you will also find De Kaai corn mill. The mill is situated on a bastion of the city walls and still grinds wheat into flour. On Saturdays, the mill is open for viewing and flour sales. All kinds of flour for home bakers are on offer.

horse It’s 12 May 1588. Pier Lupckes from the neighbouring village of Tjerkgaast has a nefarious plan to invade Sloten. But the city’s ramparts are not easy to penetrate. Together with the Spanish troops of Philip II, Lupckes thinks he has found a way to control the rebellious city. His plan is to exploit the idea of the Trojan Horse, by hiding Spanish soldiers in beer barrels. He finds two skippers from Grouw, Dotte Sibles and Stomme Jelmer, to execute his plan. In bad weather, hidden in beer barrels, the barge goes over the Slotermeer towards the small city of Sloten. But at the last moment the plan leaks out and the ruse is discovered by an attentive city guard. He sounds the alarm. This is followed by a fierce and bloody battle between the brave City Gunners and the hostile Spaniards! Skipper Sibles manages to escape, but Pier Lupckes and Stomme Jelmer are captured and have to pay for their betrayal with death. They are publicly beheaded two weeks later, after which their heads are ‘exhibited’ on poles at the gate. This is to remind others not to dream up nefarious plans to attack Sloten. This infamous episode in Sloten is re-enacted every few years with the city as the backdrop during the spectacle known as the Historisch Kijkfeest.

When you re-emerge, you'll know more. You'll see more. You'll enjoy more.

Experience the power of steam Much of the Netherlands lies under sea level, and this certainly also applies to the province of Friesland. In the 19th and early 20th century, large parts of the country were flooded during winter months. The steam pumping station had to put an end to that. The Wouda pumping station, owned by FryslĂ˘n water board, still plays a role in water management. At extremely high water levels, it is activated in order to reduce the level. Once activated, the pumping station can discharge 4 million litres of water per minute from the Frisian waters into the IJsselmeer lake.

For kids Mar & Klif visitor centre also offers all kinds of kids' activities. On arrival, you slide into the 'ice cave', where we explain where traces of ice can still be found. Check our badger sett underground or take a look up from the viewing tower. A common tern, a shoveller or a wood mouse? At Mar & Klif, you can see them all at close range. There is a wide range of stuffed birds on exhibition. Would you prefer to be outdoors with the kids? Mar & Klif have some of the best woodland discovery routes.

Fun yet educational for young and old alike Your visit starts at the modern visitor centre next door to the pumping station. Here, young and old will be amazed at the immense power of steam and water, and discover how the pumping station functions and why it has achieved UNICEF Heritage status. Six days a week (and even seven days in July and August), more than 100 enthusiastic volunteers provide guided tours for visitors. The coffee and tea house in the Panorama room offers spectacular views over Lemmer Bay and the IJsselmeer lake.

Discover the history of Frisian shipping and the stories of Sneek

That's where you'll make it!

Sneek is situated in the heart of the Frisian Lakes area. It's therefore logical that Sneek Museum is all about the history of Frisian shipping. A wide range of presentations tells the stories of inland shipping using skûtsje and tjalk flat bottomed boats, and about Frisian seafaring traditions. There's also plenty of attention for sailing. After all, Sneek is famous for its Sneekweek sailing regatta. In winters, the waterways froze over and Friesland became a skating paradise. Skates, sledges and the famous Elfstedentocht marathon race prizes are exhibited in the ice room.

Joure Museum is a surprising DIY Museum. The media actually has 10 monumental buildings, which jointly make-up the oldest industrial estate of Joure. This has always been a very busy location, and it still indeed is. In Joure Museum, you can experience the passion of manufacturing, and can also get to work yourself!

From coffee to clocks The famous central feature of the museum is the first Douwe Egberts factory, where you'll experience the story behind this famous brand. Certainly also worth the effort of the photogenic Van Keverling metal factory, where copper was cast, and the authentic printing shop where printers demonstrate the work every Thursday. One door further along is the Frisian clockmaker, housing the largest collection of Frisian clocks in the world. Seen it all? Afterwards, why not enjoy a (free) cup of coffee or tea in the lovely museum café? And don't forget to get into the Witte Os for a treat, the shop where Douwe Egberts once began.

Children will be fascinated by the children's museum Thanks to all kinds of tasks, games and activities, they'll discover just how important the lakes and channels are in Friesland, as they play their way around. In addition to my work on our dairy farm, I am committed to the promotion of ‘my’ village of Woudsend. There is so much to see and do here, that it is difficult to decide on a top tip in this water-sports village. I just have to mention the ‘t Lam corn mill with its own shop, the 11 Alleyways Tour through old streets and narrow alleyways that you can stroll down, or the homely farmer’s market every Thursday in summer. Are you in Woudsend on Saturday afternoon during high season? Then take a look in the Sint-Michaëlkerk, the oldest Roman Catholic church in Friesland. Fancy a bite to eat? Well that’s not a problem in Woudsend, as the village is known for its many snug eateries.

One particular experience I like that is offered by ‘my’ Tourist Information Centre in Heeg is a trip with the Beurtveer. When you ride a bike between Heeg and Balk you can take a skûtsje over the water from one of these places. The bikes go into the hold in no time at all, but that doesn’t cost you anything extra, though a helping hand on the skûtsje is certainly appreciated. If that isn’t the ultimate Waterland van Friesland experience, then I don’t know what is.

On a beautiful summer’s day my husband and I like to cycle from Joure, where we live. From the Tourist Information Centre in the Midstraat you can cycle in half an hour to the always inviting Langweer, where we like to sit on a terrace. On our return trip, we take the ‘little ferry’. If we feel like a longer cycling trip, we can go from Joure via the 'large ferry' at Landweer to Sint Nicolaasga. It's lovely to be able to get off your bike and enjoy a walk around the woods there. 'De Oorsprong' hotel is the ideal stop for coffee and apple pie. You can cycle the calories off on the way back to Joure anyway.

Come to Makkum and I’ll show you the beautiful surroundings from an open boat. Come and join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just make sure you inform the Tourist Information Centre that you are here. We sail through many drainage channels, waterways and canals. No matter the weather, as when it rains the rain cover goes over the boat. There is always something new to see along the way. Like that time when a white-tailed eagle crashed into a duck swimming in front of the boat. Or a grebe teaching the chick on its back how to hunt underwater. I always enjoy to the fullest that kind of pure experience of nature.

Aside from spending a lot of time at the tourist information centre in Lemmer, another hobby I have is acting. Those two passions came together when the Tourist Information Centre organised an exciting evening walk with a guide. At the Lemster sluice I briefly played the ghost of James Boorder, the commander of the British war fleet who was responsible for the attack on Lemmer in 1799. I got a spontaneous applause. Every day you can book a ‘normal’ walk with a guide at the tourist information centre in Lemmer. And on request we’ll organise another exciting evening walk. Are you up for it?

There's so much to discover, learn and experience in Waterland van Friesland. The inspiration map can only show a small part of what Southwest Friesland has to offer in art, culture and knowledge. Because It Tsiispakhûs dairy museum in Wommels, the Kazemattenmuseum in Kornwerderzand and Museum Wood town of IJlst are certainly also worth a visit. The full list of museums and visitor centres can be found on our website and at the back of his magazine.

Waterland van Friesland includes seven cities and no less than 140 villages. There are simply too many to mention them all! Each city and village has its own charm and history. But we can't help mentioning the traditional village of Wieuwerd in ‘de Greidhoek’ area. The village of the four mummies that can be viewed in the famous 1609 vaults of the Reformed Church.

water and land in connection What's unique in Waterland van Friesland is that virtually all of the lakes and waterways are connected. As you can see on the map, almost all of the region is accessible by (sailing) boat. You don't have a boat? There are plenty of spots where you can hire one. Or check out our website for the location and timetables of organised boat trips.

Hosting more than 30 windmills, Waterland van Friesland really is windmill paradise. There are plenty of options for a cycling route to visit drainage windmills, ground-sail mills, sawmills and even corn mills. Why not take a look inside? A number of the many options are the corn and barley mill ‘de Onderneming’ in Witmarsum, Penninga’s Mill in Joure and wood sawing mill de Jager in Woudsend.

Do you want to feel the sand, grass or water between your toes? There's plenty of choice in Waterland on the Frisian lakes or the IJsselmeer shore. Why not moor your boat at 'Rabbit Island’ in the Fluessen of Gaastmeer lake. Did you know you're allowed to make a campfire there?

Sand, woodland and water together provide plenty of opportunities under all circumstances. In the summer sun you can build a sturdy hut and in rainy weather you can splash around in nature with your boots on. Or how about a week of sailing camp? Make friends for life and earn yourself a real sailing diploma at the same time.

Museums and visitor centres Discover the most fantastic activities for children in our museums. For example, make your own Douwe Egbert’s tea bags in Joure Museum or imagine yourself as a train driver in the Model Railway Museum in Sneek. Pop in to the Wouda pumping station, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or release your own coloured fish in the aquarium of the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. Are you looking for adventure? Then take the Viking route treasure hunt through the Frisian Maritime Museum in Sneek.

Indoor fun There is plenty to do even when it’s wet and windy, such as the Speelbos indoor playground in Joure, the heated swimming pools in Bolsward, Sneek, Joure, Koudum, Lemmer and Wijckel. The Kameleon village in Terherne has an indoor playground, and in De Avonturij play pavilion in Bakhuizen you will find an indoor playhouse for climbing and clambering. Ballorig indoor playground in Sneek guarantees lots of fun for children up to 12 years old. Finally, the real daredevils will love the climbing wall in the Stolp in Sneek.

gnomes Gnomes, witches and toadstools are hiding everywhere in our woods. In the Elfbergen woods in Gaasterland, gnomes ask you to count, sing, measure and jump. Request the booklet, including the red gnome’s hat, at Mar & Klif visitor centre in Oudemirdum. On the gnome path near the pond in Wilhelmina-oard and the Vegelinbossen in Sint Nicolaasga you will find some very special figures. Chainsaw artist Banzai-John made a harp, turtle buddies, gnomes, a monkey and a toadstool house from decayed trees, with a new work of art added every year.

Go on an adventure in the fantastic Kameleon village in the village of Terherne. Inspired by the popular Dutch book series entitled ‘De Kameleon’ (the chameleon), the village of Lenten, which is described in the book, has been recreated in full scale. On arrival in Kameleon village, talking milk churns will tell you more about the mystery of Lenten. They’ll keep talking as you make your way through the village. Discovered the solution?

The Frisian lakes and the IJsselmeer feature some beautiful beaches. The IJsselmeer’s shallow waters mean it’s very pleasant to play and swim along the coast. Check out the inspiration map on page 48 for an overview of these beaches.

When enjoying this Frisian version of the famous Mojito cocktail on holiday in Southwest Friesland, you would not say ‘cheers’ but the Frisian ‘tsjoch’. Make it extra special with local ingredients. See the tips in the 'This is what you need’ list.

Now you can add the alcoholic beverages. We start with the genever, filling the glass up to a thumb’s width below the rim. Then add spring water, filling the glass up to half a centimetre below the rim. Stir well, so everything mixes well.

Grab a nice 250 ml glass. Cut the lime half in two and put them in the glass. Take the sprigs of fresh mint, remove the leaves and crush them with your fingers or a herb grinder. Put the crushed leaves in the glass. Add two teaspoons of brown cane sugar. Fill the glass to the rim with crushed ice cubes.

For the finishing touch, top up the glass with Be(e)renburg. For decoration, add a small sprig of mint and a slice of lime to the top of the glass.
