A bookcase in ebonised wood, brass and iron is deliberately positioned behind the bed to create privacy when the doors are open. At the same time, the design allows light to filter through from the large French windows to the apartment ’s inner rooms.

Arrange furniture in groupings that allow your guests to either sit or stand in a circle facing each other. Then add in some interactive accessories – think nice coffee table books, pretty glassware for the drinks, or nibbles served in funky bowls Light some candles and use fresh flowers and greenery both to decorate and make the space feel like a welcoming home It’s all about the visual effect.

Sociable corners are key You need places for people to gather, grab a drink and have a chat An open-plan living/dining area invites groups of people to come together – whether it’s on a large sofa island, with seats on all sides, or around a long dining table. Meanwhile, the space between is just calling out for a little dancing session

No matter whether I am creating a family home or a nightclub, I like to picture the events that will happen in that space and design it accordingly. I am especially considerate of the furniture and materials I use in places that are intended for hosting For example, if a client likes to have long dinner parties, then it’s important to have really comfortable dining chairs for guests to linger If clients prefer to party, then instead of using natural marble work surfaces we will lay stain-resistant marbleeffect porcelain tiles.

Fitted storag e is a practical solution for often awkward spaces, from custom-fit wardrobes in the eaves of a loft to kitchen cabinetry that makes the most of nooks and crannies Its sole purpose is to be nifty, nimble and bespoke, so while you might not have given much thought to handles, the hardware you choose should be an equally measured consideration. ‘Think of your cabinet hardware like jewellery,’ says Xander Shreenan of Dowsing & Reynolds Whether it’s a glimmer of gold on a closet bar or a bronze edg e pull for ease of use, we ’ ve run through the differences out there to inspire your fitted storag e solutions

Cabinet hardware for compact fitted storage should be a little smaller than door hardware. ‘It’s one of those pieces of detail that really does have to blend form and function It’s no good choosing something beautiful if you can’t g et a grip and open anything,’ says Massimo Buster Minale, founder of Buster + Punch For a built-in TV unit or shelving, small ring pulls won’t overwhelm the space, while edg e pulls are great for a minimalist style Look to Plank’s recent collection, FOLD, for cute edge pulls in clean, modern shapes, created from sheet metal

When it comes to placement, for drawers under 24 inches, centre a single pull or knob. If your drawer is 24 inches or over you can add a second pull To g et the perfect placement for your cabinet knob or pull, divide the drawer into thirds and place the two knobs in the left and right thirds of the drawer. Mounted on the door, cabinetry knobs and pulls are placed on the opposite side of the door hing e and typically two to three inches from the bottom corner of the door for upper cabinets On base cabinets, knobs are usually placed around two to three inches from the upper corner of the door

For larger fitted storage solutions, like wardrobes, go for longer-length bars. T-bars can rang e in length from around 160mm to 280mm while closet bars work well on floorto-ceiling doors and are a long er length at around 420mm and beyond. Closet bars are elongated handles that draw the eye upwards and allow you to g et a firm grip on a heavier door.

For an enduringly stylish and industrial look, go for a solid metal. Stainless steel, brass and bronze are all sleek and stylish, giving an industrial edge to your cabinetry.
