zagreb never sits still, and our modern city is very much of the 365-day variety. autumn is a magnificent time to be in the croatian capital, as the greens of the abundant flora turn vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange, inspiring romance and wonder in equal measure.
this is a brilliant time of year for culture, as the city’s museums and galleries put on their best face while the weather remains pleasant enough for outdoor events and special celebrations. Is there anything more romantic than artistic expression in a gorgeous, colourful environment? the melodies are richer, the harmonies sweeter, and the air fills with an undeniable sense of engagement and enthusiasm.
the zagreb autumn events schedule is jam-packed with creativity, from sights to sounds, with feeling at the forefront of everything. 2023 promises to be something extraordinary, as the tremendous art platform artupunktura celebrates and evaluates art in an urban context while the famous Open House zagreb festival comes here for the first time.
artupunktura - zagreb art Platform, is at the centre of this autumn’s cultural offer. Its third edition will build on the magic of the previous two, continuing its quest to bring art to zagreb’s cultural, natural and urban ecosystem. the festival speaks of ‘mapping new visions and urban ecosystems’, and the events schedule achieves this through various styles, inspirations, settings and influences. Artupunktura is a unique way to experience the fertile art scene of the city, from established names to the next generation of artists.
Ivana Franke’s spatial installation ‘resonance of the unforseen’ promises to be one of the highlights, showcasing minimalism at its most expansive. located in the zrinjevac Park music pavilion, the work uses the pavilion as both canvas and muse, combining natural ambience and human engineering to change perception in real-time. this critically acclaimed showcase has toured the world, provoking new interpretations of space and vision at every stop, proving that art is a true force in changing the world around us (sometimes, literally).
the life and work of tomislav gotovac inspires much of artupunktura. this artist, director, performer and agitator gets the retrospective treatment in ‘zagreb, I lOve YOu!’, a project named after his most famous work. It is an all-encompassing experience in five segments, with lectures, concerts and a city walk revealing gotovac and artupunktura to everyone. It promises to be a true highlight of Zagreb’s magnificent autumn events schedule.

change is constant, and this engaging exhibition focuses on its impact on everything from the creation of the universe to the entire concept of life on earth. It combines creativity with research and an eye for detail, utilising a range of styles in the process, both traditional and futuristic.

established in 2015, the event celebrates the magic and wonder of French cinema in all its guises, with five films covering contemporary, documentary, animated and classic cinema. this year’s edition opens with the iconic ‘Demons’ by Henri-georges clouzot, with a special social gathering before the movie.

three fantastic concerts featuring a trio of brilliant jazz orchestras make this a must for fans of jazz. the schedule is opened by the Zoran Majstorović Quartet and Julia Perminova trio (featuring tatiana nova), followed by the Vladimir Smardžić Tri and Jan Pele Dalmotion. the Jumbo big band (three jazz orchestras from croatia, serbia and slovenia) will bring the event to a stunning climax.

It has since been revamped in various ways, with one new interpretation premiering this autumn.

based on vladimir bartol’s international best-selling book of the same name, slovenia’s most infamous band will bring their unique sound to a story of radical politics and religious nihilism. the show was conceived in collaboration with several Iranian composers, and the tehran music Orchestra will perform alongside the band.

zagreb’s elegant architecture is undoubtedly one of the city’s most delightful characteristics. this is one giant love letter to the town buildings, promoted and celebrated by architects, builders, investors, owners, and citizens. architecture is about more than the brick and mortar of a structure, as every building plays a role in daily city life. How does architecture collide with the broader functions of a city? the Open House zagreb program will explore this and more through 35 intriguing buildings, going deep into the practical side of things will never straying too far from an appreciation of the aesthetic beauty of the capital’s architecture. all of the programs are free, accentuating the accessibility of the event.
Open House is an international festival established in 1992 and incorporated 54 major cities around the globe, including new York, london, Paris and more.
