Take to the Trees: 3 South African Treetop Stays

l 11

EDITOR’S VIEW

IN THIS EDITION

This month our focus is on two of the Western Cape’s most beautiful regions where properties of the highest standard is available. And when looking at the property market, we still need to remind ourselves that it is a buyers’ market. Not everyone can buy property cash or with saved funds and most people need to obtain finance from one of the many available financing institutions. With the current extremely low interest rate, now is the time to bite the bullet and buy that long awaited dream house. Not everyone in the property market is having a ball though. Rentals are a problematic sector as many landlords experience rentals dropping further due to a swelling oversupply as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to force lockdowns and many workers continue to work away from the office. According to the authoritative Rode property report, rentals for decentralized grade-A space decreased by 5% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the first quarter of 2020, thereby declining for the third consecutive quarter. Grade-A nominal rentals decreased by 8% in Cape Town and 7% in Johannesburg − the worst declines of the major cities. As the aftershock of the pandemic reach into the economy, construction of new office buildings and retail space is likely to slow down. What is more likely in the case of office space is that the older buildings and layouts of exclusive offices will undergo a facelift and conversions to better utilise the available floor space. Sharing of office space and hot desks are likely to become an even more daily offering in this sector, putting landlords under more pressure to ensure that their finances are balanced. According to Rode there are early signs that the market is starting to cool, with prices trending sideways since December on a month-on-month basis. This could be because the interest rate impact is starting to fade, while unemployment and salary cuts start to play more of a role in curbing demand growth. House prices in South Africa are still lucrative with a slight price growth of about 4% in February 2021 compared to February 2020, mainly due to the already mentioned low interest rates. This means that so far in 2021 house prices have outpaced consumer inflation, which averaged 3% in the first two months.

Pearly Beach

a coastal gem

Travel along the N2 from Cape Town, through Hermanus, Past Stanford, then onto Gansbaai, Franskraal and Uilenkraalsmond, and another 11kms further you find Pearly Beach.

COVER VIEW

Pearly Beach is a seaside hamlet in the Overberg District of the Western Cape. An area where the Southern Right Whale comes to calve and mate along its migratory route (June to October), where they can be seen with their young ones all along the coastline. The history of Pearly Beach dates back to the 1920’s and a great deal of the town’s charm lies in old traditions and the jovial camaraderie between residents and holidaymakers, who all share the same passion for long, lazy walks along vast stretches of pristine beaches, casting your reel and diving into refreshing waters, unspoilt beauty and serene landscapes.

Being a popular angling spot, a myriad of species such as cob, galjoen, steenbras and a variety of others are often found in the shallow, inshore reefs, while boat fishing is also popular. A lively angling club ensures fun over weekends and holidays, with regular angling competitions and social activities. In addition, several outdoor activities could be added including the likes of horse trails on the beach, organized hikes, etc. Pearly Beach is also one of the world’s greatest botanical hotspots. Several plant species are endemic to a small area of lime soils near Pearly Beach, where the fynbos is

largely untouched and is alive with various flowering species during August and September. Pearly Beach has various shops that sell anything from wine to winches, and a variety of quaint restaurants and pubs, guesthouses, B & B’s and self-catering accommodation options. Another great attraction is the nearby Dyer Island and Great White Shark viewing industry at the nearby Kleinbaai harbour, a mere 20 mins drive from Pearly Beach. Dyer Island is a 20ha nature reserve, situated 8.5km from Kleinbaai Harbour.

“What is important is that Pearly Beach, while still retaining its rural character, is no longer mainly only a weekend or holiday destination. With comfortable access to all the necessary infrastructure, the likes of medical services, shopping and modern technology, the demand has grown from clients who are moving their primary residences to Pearly Beach and working remotely from home. However, we remain extremely environmentally responsible and conscious. In addition, we have an extremely efficient and passionate Conservancy who are dedicated to the preservation of our fauna and flora”, and who, in turn also work very closely with the Pearly Beach Ratepayers’ Association” says Nelia Muller, Resident Seeff Agent in Pearly Beach. A property now on sale to buyers looking for a great retreat for the whole family and enjoying the perfect beach front location in Pearly Beach, this property presents the ultimate in beach house aesthetics and features. A stunning design with an interior bursting with positive character – quirky and rustic yet achieving a coherence with a variety of specially designed treatments. Careful detailing of the home displays a high level of creativity, and, combined with the beautiful fynbos surrounds and beachfront, makes this property extremely unique. Presenting 3 levels of unbeatable style, the infrastructure boasts 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a guest toilet, games room that leads onto a deck and boardwalk to the beach, open plan kitchen and living area with built in fireplace.

The top level presents the bar area with built in braai that leads out to a huge patio and open verandah with unsurpassed ocean views. Additional features of note would have to include the outdoor shower, larger than standard double garage with automated door, aluminum window and door frames, 24/7 rapid response security.

TASTE VIEW CANDICE GOLDSTEIN the wizard of raw food using plant-based food creatively.

Although Candice Goldstein has been a foodie for as long as she can remember, it was only when she was in her early 40s that she decided to become a chef. “I studied part-time at Capsicum Culinary Studio, while working in a restaurant during the day. It was very stressful as I had never worked in a professional kitchen before. I worked every area of the kitchen, from preparing salads to cooking at the grill and helping with the pastry. My head chef was extremely tough, and it was one of the hardest times in my life,” she recalls. “Parallel to this, I was getting knowledge and expertise from Capsicum in my evening classes, where I was studying for a two-year Culinary Arts Diploma. Goldstein, who lives in Johannesburg, graduated in 2015 and not long afterwards, left for the US to study Raw Cuisine in Los Angeles with Matthew Kenney Culinary. Kenney, the author of 12 books and founder of dozens of vegan restaurants is an American celebrity chef, entrepreneur, author, and educator specialising in plant-based cuisine.

Black Bean Nachos makes a delicious shared plate or cocktail snack.

Says Goldstein: “A few years before, I had l anded a gig helping in the kitchen at Leafy Greens Café where I was introduced to Raw Cuisine. This was hugely inspiring to me, and I knew it was what I wanted to study and get involved with.” It was at Matthew Kenney Culinary that Goldstein learnt how to live a plant-based life in the most cutting edge and creative way.

“I realised I did not need to eat animal products to live a healthy life and the food we were making was earthy chic healthy upbeat plant-based artistry on a plate. Over the course of three months, we prepared every classical cuisine dish, with a special ingenious plant-based equivalent using the principles of raw cuisine. The course was a complete mind shift in consciousness, lifestyle and food preparation for me.” Upon her return to South Africa in August 2015, Goldstein decided to start her own business supporting her plant-based lifestyle. “I saw the need for products in this clearly expanding market and Raw Wizard was born. “The name suggests products that are tasty and unique, incorporating raw vegan principles,” she says. Goldstein designed the range around products that she would want to eat – natural, plant-based everyday products that were delicious enough to appease all palates. It is also important to her that the company supports naturally grown and additive-free produce and that most of their packaging is recyclable glass. What does the Raw Wizard range include? “There’s vegan nut cream cheese made from cashew-macadamias which comes in three flavours: Chives, Spicy Peppers and Thyme and Herbes de Provence with Lavender, and which is delicious on crackers, spooned into sauces or added to salads; vegan cultured plain cashew yoghurts, plain or chia flavoured, which can be used as a sour cream base or sweetened with fruits and honey and added to muesli; eight different flavoured fermented krauts – from beetroot, cabbage, fennel and ginger to carrots, onion, garlic, chilli and oregano – excellent as a topping, filling or side vegetable; two different flavours of sprouted burger patties and last but not least, a seasonal kimchi with miso, either mild or super-hot.” Adds Goldstein: “The health brand status of Raw Wizard has proved to be more and more relevant in a world where people are making healthier choices to feel vital and avoid medical problems and expenses. There is also greater cruelty-free consciousness and environmental protection awareness which ties in with the plant-based lifestyle.”

Goldstein recently launched a plant-based recipe channel on YouTube - Plant-Based Wizard - where she presents recipes for everyone! Go to https://youtu.be/M-uUxP727Bc When asked what her last meal would be, Goldstein doesn’t hesitate: “My Black Bean Nachos Shared Plate - a delicious creamy protein-rich dish, full of flavour and satisfaction. The sour cream black bean base is made with the Raw Wizard cashew yoghurt and pairs exquisitely with the fresh greens and tomatoes, the genuine Mexican guacamole (which is soured with lime not lemon) and a round of corn nachos.”

The health brand status of Raw Wizard has proved to be more and more relevant in a world where people are making healthier choices.

Black Bean Nachos Shared Plate (serves 2) This makes a delicious shared plate or cocktail snack. INGREDIENTS: • ¼ cup coriander leaves, roughly chopped • 4 cherry tomatoes, quartered. • 3 medium lettuce leaves, shredded • ½ cup (85g) cooked or canned and drained black beans or aduki beans • ¼ cup (60g) Raw Wizard plain or chia cashew cultured yoghurt • 1-3 chillies, de-seeded (depending if you like it mild, medium or hot) and finely chopped (or ¼ tsp chilli powder) • ¾ tsp cumin powder • 1 tsp coriander powder • Pinch of Himalayan salt • ½ ripe avocado plus another pinch of Himalayan salt • 1 tbsp lime juice • 1½ tbsp water • About 10 non-GMO plain nachos chips • 26 x 15 cm flat rectangular plate. METHOD: Use freshly cooked beans rather than canned. They are loaded with fresh nutrition. Making your own is also sodium and sugar free, and do not contain preservatives, additives or heavy metals as is often the case with canned food. Soaking them first is crucial. It makes the beans very digestible after cooking and more nutrient available. The beans begin to break down whilst soaking and this reduces cooking time. Once cooked, drained and frozen, they are as convenient as canned beans, but so much nicer and healthier. To cook your beans, place 1 cup (200g) in a bowl and cover them well with at least 7cm of water. Cover the bowl with a plate. Leave it like this in the fridge for 48 hours. Do not leave the beans at room temperature as they could begin to ferment. Drain and rinse the beans well. Place in a pot covering with water double their volume. So, if the soaked drained beans make up 3 cups, put 6 cups water into the pot. With the lid off, bring to the boil then simmer on a medium heat for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the water has just about boiled away and the beans are tender. Do not boil the water away completely as the beans will dry out and will burn at the bottom.

Once the beans have cooled, take ½ cup for this recipe. Freeze the rest of the beans in ½ cup or 1 cup portions in lidded glass jars for use in other bean recipes when needed.

Candice Goldstein, the wizard of raw food.

Prepare the coriander first. Remove the leaves from the stems as the stems have a bitter taste. Then wash, dry and chop roughly and set aside. Keep a sprig of coriander for garnish. Prepare your cherry tomatoes. and set aside. De-seed your chillies, chop finely and set aside. Wash and dry your lettuce and shred. Set aside. Prepare your guacamole. Remove the avocado from the skin and mash with a fork. Add the salt and lime juice to taste. It should be quite tart. Lime has a higher sugar content, making it the preferred choice over lemon in traditional Mexican guacamole. In a medium bowl, place the yoghurt, spices, salt and chillies and mix gently. Now mix in the beans and coriander. Raw Wizard yogurt is the perfect sour creamy addition that is quintessential to Mexican cuisine. TO ASSEMBLE: • Place your bean mixture on the 26 x15 cm square plate, taking up a third of the plate from one end. • Top the beans with the lettuce. Dot with the tomato wedges and garnish with the coriander sprig. • Place the guacamole in the second third of the plate next to the beans. In the last third of the plate place the nachos.

BUYING A PET? Make the right choice.

“Mommy, I want a dog, please mom!” Are these words the beginning of a lifelong friendship between children and their families and their favourite housemate, or is it the start of a nightmare that feels as if it never ends? This is the exact reason why one should consider buying nor adopting the right pet for your family before taking the big step. Growing up with a pet can be a wonderful experience – pets provide children with company and unconditional love. At the same time, it is a valuable lesson in responsibility, care taking and eventually to have to say goodbye to something you loved for ever. In general, your family should try to buy a dog with a low activity level and, because most families with young children are time poor, choose a dog that won’t require a lot of grooming. It is essential that your pup/ dog is well-socialised with humans and other animals. Every dog should receive some basic obedience training and know how to sit, stay, drop and come when you call it. Firm ground rules must be laid down for your dog, but children must also learn to follow rules, such as not patting your dog when it is sleeping or eating. Children need to understand that a dog is not a toy and must be treated appropriately. • What is the lifestyle you lead – is your family homebound, or do you like to spend weekends and holidays away from home. • The age of your children • Where do you live – free standing house, flat, security complex, farm or small holding • How much time do you and the rest of your family spend at home? • Can you give your pet enough exercise? • How much are you prepared to spend on your pet – the I initial buying as well as the care afterwards Let’s say you and the family have decided on getting a dog to add to your family, there are even more aspects to consider.

PET VIEW

The first hurdle is to be definitive about breed selection because all dogs and cats are individuals and, although breeds have common behaviour characteristics, their temperaments can vary. Just as important as selecting the breed, is the individual temperament of the animal and the way it is socialised and managed by you. To complicate things further, many of the cats and dogs fall into the categories of “mongrels” or “mutts”- crossbreeds, whose breed is often difficult to define but they can make great pets. Also decide one why you want a specific breed – be it as working dog, guard dog, small or large breed. The choice of breed will influence the way you interact with your pet daily and determine whether you meet each other’s needs.

In South Africa, the most popular dog breeds are Yorkshire Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Bulldog, Rottweiler, Golden Retriever, Bull Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Beagle Pomeranian and smooth haired Chihuahua. In the city environment working breeds will mostly not be bought for that role, but working dogs such as St Bernards, Doberman Pinchers and Border Collies make great pets and friends for the kids. Guard dogs, including Germ Shephards, Maremmas, Rottweilers, Dobermans and Akitas can fulfil this role while being a great family friend at the same time. They can be very protective and, although loyal and safe with their own family members, can sometimes resent outsiders coming into their territory. This could potentially cause problems with visiting friends. Some people mistakenly believe that they are better off to buy a small dog. This is not always the case, as many small dogs are intimidated by children’s behaviour and may not be comfortable being chased by a toddler. This can result in snapping. Most small terriers like Jack Russells and Fox Terriers, are very energetic and love to

chase and catch things. This can be problematic when kids are involved. Try to meet both parents of your potential pup - temperament is partly inherited so if either parent is shy or aggressive, then avoid. If both parents are delightful with kids, you are heading the right way.

LEGAL VIEW When it comes to transfer costs, we have to distinguish between costs the seller is liable for, and costs the purchaser is liable for. Below I will make a clear distinction between the two and clarify what exactly those costs involve to make it easier for you to understand the next time your attorney sends you a Statement of Account. I will also touch on the financial duties of the Transfer Attorney. Transfer costs are normally collected from the Purchaser as soon as possible.

The Purchaser will have to budget for the following: 1. Conveyancer’s fees – Determined by the Legal Practice Council’s conveyancing fee guidelines. 2. Administration fee – Issuing of the clearance certificate. 3. Deeds office fees – Lodging your request at the particular deeds office and are determined by the value of the property. 4. Postage and petties – Firms have different guidelines, but it is customary to recover between R600–R1000 5. Certificate – Obtained from the homeowners association and/or body corporate for levies. 6. Purchase price – Either cash or through bond approval. 7. A deposit – If it is a requirement of the offer to purchase.

www.snyman.com | info@snyman.com | 087 350 9000

8. Transfer duty – Transfer Duty must be paid to the Receiver of Revenue for properties with a purchase price above R900 000, and if the property is below that price, the purchaser will attend to the payment of the Transfer Duty Exemption Certificate which will be given by SARS. 9. Occupational rent – If the purchaser moves into the property before the registration and the seller agrees to this, the purchaser will then have to pay occupational rent for the days occupied by the purchaser. 10. Fee–Deeds office searches, CIPC searches, and FICA verification.

The Seller will have to budget for the following: 1. Rates and taxes to the municipality – Calculated over three to four months, as prescribed by the municipality concerned. 2. Levies – To the homeowners and/or body corporate 3. Agents commission – Including 15% VAT 4. Costs for the cancellation–Existing bond and the actual amount that must be pai to cancel the bond if applicable. 5. Electrical, borer beetle, gas installations, and electric fence certificate (whichever is applicable)

It is paramount to have sufficient funds in the Attorney’s account to cover the expenses mentioned. The Transfer Attorney must exercise care when handling the amounts mentioned above and the Attorney may not under any circumstance use the money given for personal use, furthermore the Transfer Attorney must exercise a level of care upon making payment to the different parties and ensure that the money does not end up in the wrong hands.

Why use a rental agent and how to choose the right one. While owning a rental property is usually with the aim of earning handsome financial returns, it also comes with pitfalls and challenges. If you do not have a good calibre tenant who pays their rent on time or looks after the property, you can quickly be left out of pocket. It also becomes a challenge if you are not able to keep an eye on your investment and make regular inspections.

RENTAL VIEW

property is properly looked after and maintained. The agent should also keep the landlord abreast of any legislative changes and ensure that all documentation and contracts are compliant.

The latest rental market data shows that the rental market remains strained due to the current economic climate with rental arrears remaining a challenge for landlords. An experienced agent usually knows how to quickly spot a problem and take appropriate action.

How to pick the right rental agent

New legislation is adding to the challenges faced by landlords. The rental landscape has become more complex and legislated. It is no longer a simple process to evict a tenant and cutting off their electricity or locking them out of the premises will find you on the wrong side of the law.

Check that the agent has access to the necessary systems and technology to source and vet tenants and to manage the collection of rentals and the maintenance needs of the property.

What does a rental agent do?

All rental agents must comply with EAAB (Estate Agency Affairs Board) regulations in terms of being registered with the EAAB and in possession of a valid Fidelity Fund Certificate (FFC). There are usually two types of services offered by rental agents. The first is just a basic tenant sourcing service which includes marketing the property and sourcing and vetting a suitable tenant. The agent will assist with providing advice on the correct rental to charge as well as what the appropriate rent deposit should be. The agent will also provide a lease agreement which protects the interest of the landlord, collect the rent deposit and first month’s rent and assist with the incoming inspection upon occupation of the premises by the tenant. The second, would be a full managed option which, in addition to the above, entails the full management of the tenant and property for the duration of the lease agreement. This includes regular inspections of the property, attending to maintenance issues, ensuring the deposit is invested in an interest bearing account, collecting the monthly rent timeously and managing any late or arrear payments and taking the necessary legal action when needed. A managed solution will usually also include attending to the timeous renewal of the lease as well as outgoing inspections. This option is often preferred as the landlord can ensure that the

The most prudent option is to choose someone local in the area where your investment is located. Check that they have a track record and that they are registered and in possession of a valid FFC.

Check that they have the necessary systems to ensure there are no slip ups in terms of rent collection and taking the appropriate action in the event of late payments or defaults. Ensure they are able to manage the maintenance needs of the property and have trusted suppliers who can assist when necessary. Author: Gina Meintjes

New Wilde Paarde Estate offers something for everyone The new Wilde Paarde Country Estate, located on the southern side of Paarl, opposite the world-renowned Boschenmeer Golf Estate, offers spectacular views of the Paarl, Simonsberg, and Drakenstein Mountains. Named after the Wildepaardejagt River which runs through the southern edge of the estate it is the new jewel in the crown of the Cape Winelands. The river derives its name from the sound of the rocks rolling down the river which sounded like wild horses running to the early Settlers. The land was granted to Isaac De Villiers and Son in May 1826 and surveyed in 1854. The 16ha estate offers 118 single residential erven on a plot-and-plan basis with plots ranging from 547sqm to 1164sqm. There is a choice of 12 building plans with a choice of houses ranging from 180sqm for three bedrooms to a luxury 490sqm home with five bedrooms. Prices range from R3.2m to R6.7m This is a “Plot and Plan” estate where all the plots are for freestanding houses. There will not be any clubhouses or play areas or blocks of flats. This will help to keep the levies to a minimum which to start with have been pegged at R1 250 per month. The smallest plot is 547sqm and the largest 1164sqm, something to suit everyone’s pocket. The estate’s architect will liaise with purchasers regarding any alterations they want to make to the standard plans, and quotes for those alterations will be done by the approved contractors. If you are from the Paarl area, you will be aware of the magnificent mountains which surround the area. From Wilde Paarde Country Estate you have views to the west of Paarl mountain, to the north, the Drakenstein Range, to the east and south you have the Simonsberg range. Really stunningly beautiful. As a bonus, the Wildepaardejagt River runs through the southern part of the development, and beyond the river there is a 3.5-hectare greenbelt defining the southern border of the Estate.

ESTATE VIEW

This greenbelt will be for the exclusive use of the residents and they can picnic next to the river, walk their dogs (pet friendly estate), ride bikes, jog etc. There is a 24-hour manned security gate and patrols throughout the day while electric fencing around the residential perimeter further enhances the safety of residents. It is the developers’ intention to build some Turnkey houses for those purchasers who prefer that option. All the services are in place and the first batch of houses will be registered within the next week or two. There are no phases as happens in most developments. Every plot is ready for construction.

LIFESTYLE Paarl is one of the most sought-after country towns in the Cape Winelands/Boland region, especially with families who want access to the top class schools, being Paarl Boys High (Boishaai), and Paarl Gimnasium which ranks among the top producers of Springbok Rugby players, along with the Paarl Girls High and Paarl Gimnasium Girls High and La Rochelle. It is an excellent commuter town for those working in Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Worcester, and offers a laid-back lifestyle with easy access to the country’s top wine farms. There are excellent amenities in the town including Paarl Mall, Paarl Mediclinic and Cape Town is a mere 45 minutes’ drive.

ARCHITECTURE Inspired by the strong Dutch heritage evident in the beautiful buildings for which our town, Paarl is renowned, the decision to base Wilde Paarde Country Estate’s architecture on the contemporary Cape Vernacular style was an easy one.

This is a more informal style of the older Cape Dutch style which the 17th century settlers made endemic to the Western Cape and lending itself to a charming country style. Replacing the elaborate gables and incorporating other modern features, the Vernacular style has proved to be very popular on Country Estates and wine estates in the region.

Shopping online here to stay. With the current Covid-19 pandemic still raging in the country and all over the world, shopping patterns of consumers have changed drastically over the past year or so. In South Africa the online shopping market has grown in phenomenal strides over the past few years and most of the big retailers have a strong online presence. It is estimated that this market segment will grow by at least 4% year on year over the next four years. It is also estimated that by 2024 almost 51% of all shopping by consumers in South Africa will be done online. According to businessinsider.co.za the value of South Africa’s online retail sales has more than doubled in two years. In 2018, online stores sold R14 billion worth of goods, representing just 1.4% of the total retail market. This grew to more than R30 billion in 2020, spurred by Coronavirusinduced lockdowns which kept people indoors. While the growth rate is expected to be more subdued in 2021, online retail is still expected to top R40 billion and account for 4% of all retail in South Africa. This growth was predicated by Mastercard’s 2020 study on consumer spending, which found that 68% of South Africans were spending more time shopping online than prior to the pandemic. Apart from data and airtime – which remain the most bought items online – more than half of all South Africans surveyed by Mastercard reported buying more clothing and groceries through e-commerce platforms in 2020. And there is a myriad of options, depending on what you want to shop for. Takealot.com is South Africa’s largest online retailer. It was launched in 2011 following the acquisition and rebranding of an existing ecommerce business by Naspers. In 2015, it merged with competitor Kalahari.com and since 2018, Takealot has been owned by this South African internet conglomerate. And South Africans are not shy to buy online. The products mostly bought through the various portals are clothing, apparel and footwear, pet accessories, jewellery, men’s grooming products, shapewear, smart watches and marketing tips. Online shopping has come to stay and will only grow in future, irrespective of any pandemics or new retail tendencies.

Take to the Trees: 3 South African Treetop Stays

If you’re in need of an immersive nature experience to escape the helter-skelter of life, why not take to the sanctuary of the trees? South Africa offers a plethora of treetop stays, and I’ve picked my top three.

1. Synergy Treehouse

Scarborough’s charm lies in the fact that it’s a short drive from the city;only 45-minute’s drive from town and you’re safely in the seaside conservation town. This property topped one of my bucket lists for many years and during the lockdown, I was finally able to witness the Synergy magic in person. Although the house is not technically a treehouse, the glass and steel building carefully follows the steep incline of the land, with immense consideration to the trees. The generous decks that wrap around the property have been carefully crafted around the magnificent Myoporum trees that surround the home. The main structure includes a downstairs master bedroom opening onto the pool and sun deck, and then upstairs a modern kitchen, lounge and then veranda with views over the town. Outside there’s a large dining table, boma fashioned into the garden, and then a little higher up a second bedroom floats above the trees. synergy-escape.com

From the ocean to a forest hideaway – our next experience takes us deep into the forests that inspired the iconic novels by South African author Dalene Matthee. The Teniqua Treetop Suites offer eight unique stay options in the heart of the forest. Arriving just in time for sunset, I lit up the braai and watched the last rays of the sun work their golden magic through the forest. After a hearty meal, the large bathtub offered the chance to forget about all my woes as the sounds of the forest falling asleep filled the air. The Knysna Louries are regular visitors so look out for the unmistakable flashes of green and purple. The suites are set in 36 hectares of pristine Garden Route forest – with two trails to fully explore them. Be sure to ask the team about the steep, but rewarding walk down to the Karatara river and rock pools. Since the suites are spaced out, you possibly won’t see another guest during your stay. The quaint town of Sedgefield is less than a 15-minute drive away if you’re needing to stock up on anything. teniquatreetops.co.za

3. &Beyond Ngala Tree house

Surrounded by the Kruger National Park’s world-renowned Big 5 territory, &BEYOND Ngala’s Treehouse may just be South Africa’s crowning glory treehouse experience. Standing at twelve meters tall, the freestanding masterpiece was engineered by legendary safari lodge outfitters Fox Browne Creative. From either the Ngala Tented or Safari lodge, it’s a relatively short drive until arriving at the treehouse site. Your host and guide then walk you through the bush, as the magnificent structure slowly comes into view. A thicket fence creates a safe boma around the base of the treehouse, and from there it’s time to experience the magic. Once you’ve stepped in, it’s an unforgettable journey up until you reach the top. The first level houses the fully-equipped kitchen, where meals are served – with Smeg appliances you’re immediately aware that you’re in for something utterly unique. The next level features the bathroom with a shower that offers prime views into the bush. The third level is the bedroom with a plush king bed and surrounded by glass so that you never feel separated from the wild surroundings. Lastly, the top level is a viewing and relaxation deck for alfresco dining and game viewing from the luxury of the top of the trees. andbeyond.com

A PLACE OF CARE AND NURTURE

In the centre of Stellenbosch, an old community clinic in the tree-lined Victoria Street has turned the page to reveal a brand-new chapter in its journey of caring. The historic structure which nurtured the physical health of the local community, recently reopened its doors as a beautifully restored, multipurpose facility that now cares for the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the town.

CARE VIEW

The exciting journey to transform the badly neglected clinic building with heritage status into a caring economic hub started in 2019 when the Stellenbosch Municipality awarded a ten-year lease for the building to Stellenbosch-based NPO, Ranyaka Community Transformation. Pioneering investors with the support of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), include Buco, Nedbank’s Enterprise Development Department, the Stellenbosch University, the Jannie Mouton Foundation, Entersekt and individual donors, translating the vision into reality. TheCoCreate Hub opened its doors in the last week of July. In a town where centrally-located business premises and support services come at a premium, community entrepreneurs can access affordable working, trading and retail space, whilst Stellenbosch residents and visitors the opportunity to ‘buy local, feast local and connect local’ from small business owners residing in or working from communities surrounding central Stellenbosch. There is a deli, gift shop, gallery space and boutique where local talent is showcased and celebrated. Local barbers and hairdressers offer their services from the beauty bar on a rotational basis. The eatery space features a large map of Stellenbosch, highlighting all the ‘dorpies’ that make up this diverse town and from your hot-desking countertop, one overlooks the courtyard where funky food carts custom-designed for the Hub serve up a feast of local fare. The antiquated brick walls that were uncovered during renovations now form a focal point of the development hub.

The immaculately restored building is now a centre providing business opportunities for many residents.

Bulelwa Tito and Lerato Mtiya from Yeyethu Designer Studio in Kayamandi are two of the local entrepreneurs who are trading from the Hub’s fashion room.

Adjacent to the public trading space, is a section of the Hub reserved for level 1 and 2 B-BBEE local business owners and the NGO sector who have access to office space, hot-desking facilities, business support, a meeting room and a training room, available for hire to any organisation or company looking to host a training session. Ranyaka’s Building Business programme will also support business owners through practical business support, training, the allocation of mentors and assistance with business compliance and local supply-chain registration. “The Hub is about so much more than a trading space, though”, says Ranyaka Marketing Manager, Sonya Olivier. “Our vision is that it becomes a place of purpose and meaningful connection, genuine care. Our slogan from day one has been ‘Unlock Stellenbosch’. This is what it’s all about. Unlocking economic opportunity, but alsounlocking potential and forging new friendships. Caring for the community I swath we do and what we try to execute.” NO AVERAGE MAKEOVER “Working on a historic building brings new surprises every day,” says local project manager, Will Hammers. “We never knew what we were going to discover. One expects to find a concrete floor underneath a cement floor topping. In one room, we removed the topping – and there was no floor underneath! And because the walls aren’t straight, it’s a challenge to attach a straight piece of timber to it,” he adds. When the plaster was removed, the team discovered beautiful brickwork, which has now been left exposed. Other hidden gems included lovely arches and rustic timber lintels. These too have now been left exposed to feature the interesting textures, striking focal points and a stunning juxtaposition between the old and the new. “In line with Ranyaka’s commitment to caring for the people from the town and its surroundings, and promoting local economic inclusion, preference was given to local B-BBEE micro or small contractors who reside and/or operate their businesses within the municipal boundaries of Stellenbosch,” says Marli Goussard, Ranyaka Enterprise Development manager.

Says Ranyaka Stakeholder and Relationship Manager, Amy Levendal. “The transformation of this space has been nothing short of dramatic. We would like the Hub journey to serve as tangible evidence of the power of collaboration, passion and the support of not only pioneering investors, but the very communities it seeks to serve. We look forward to the next exciting phase of this journey as we continue to build bridges and unlock opportunity for all the people of our beautiful town.”

The hub food cart is operated by local business entrepreneurs who in the past did not have a venue to run their business from.

Around the world in a whim. by Lizl Naude, Owner & Creative Director of Lilly Loompa Upcycled Homeware

Travelling broadens one’s mind. It has been said that “Travel is the only thing you buy, that makes you richer.” According to Tourism 2020 report released by Statistics South Africa, foreign arrivals dropped by 71% from just over 15, 8million in 2019 to less than 5 million in 2020. It is evident that the Covid-19 pandemic impacted the tourism industry quite hard around the world and in South Africa, mainly due to the lockdown and travel restrictions that were imposed. Most of us are experiencing travelling FOMO (fear of missing out) right now. We haven’t been able to move as freely as we would want, because of the restrictions. We cannot visit our friends and family as often and easily as we used to! This is something we took heavily for granted.

The excitement and preparation of an upcoming holiday is a feeling that we all miss. Booking your flights, packing, waking up early to either drive or fly, seems so foreign now. Arriving at the airport, checking in, and hearing the announcements over the intercom. Seeing people from all walks of life coming and going. AAAAAH, how I miss that! A few years ago, my husband and I went travelling around our beautiful country. Our road trip lasted 14 days and we drove along the East Coast of South Africa. We visited 5 provinces and passed through 6 in total. So, to remind myself of my travels, I thought to share an easy and fun project with you. To remind me of our trip, I decided to make a lampshade using a map of South Africa.

Here is how I did it! You will need the following materials: • A map (preferably of an area or country you have travelled before) • Tracing paper • Lampshade frame • Thick permanent marker in the colour of your choice • Thinner permanent marker in the colour of your choice • Pen in the colour of your choice. • Glue gun

How to do it: 1. Start by tracing the outline of the country. Start from the outside in. Use the thicker marker. Also outline the national roads with the thinner marker. 2. Then take the pen to outline the secondary roads, and areas of interest. 3. Grab the lampshade frame and carefully glue the paper to the frame. Try to work as neat as possible. You only need a few items to start this project.

4. Add some ribbon, or a strip of paper in your choice around the edges. This will give the lampshade a more finished look.

Fix the shade to a stand and flick the switch.

This is a quick and easy way to update any room. You can even try to do it as a hanging pendant light. Now every time you switch on the lamp, you will be reminded of your trips and adventures! Go ahead and try it! “What I try to do is to make sure that all of the materials I use for my different projects, were once used by someone else and were discarded. Once you start looking around for materials to use, you will realise that you don’t necessarily have to go to the shops and spend a lot of money to be able to complete your project. There are some waste products you cannot use from recycled stock, but in my designs and projects it is surprising to see how much usable waste goes to landfill. “But ever since I seriously started pursuing my upcycling business, your attention is focussed on those products that others regard as trash,” Naude emphasis. Upcycling is the transformation of waste into new products that offer a greater value than the previous material. Upcycling is a relatively new concept but is growing in stature as more and more people realise the value of waste. The basis of upcycling is to re-invest into the environment by “giving junk a second chance”. It is also known as creative reuse, which is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. It allows us to keep even single-use items in use indefinitely. Add some ribbon or paper to complete the look.

Arrange your new lamp shade in your favourite spot in the room.

“It is also important to note the difference between upcycling and recycling as these are really two worlds apart. Recycling involves the destruction of waste in order to create something new, whereas upcycling takes waste and creates something new from it in its current state. While recycling is practical, upcycling is highly creative and can involve a wide variety of techniques and materials to create the finished product.” “My team and I manufacture a variety of products, from storage holders, to dinner table accessories, décor and small furniture, among others. Our homeware is created through a process of hip cycling, which is essentially upcycling discarded waste and transforming it into desirable products that would complement your home. Eco-friendly, handcrafted and 100% South African, each Lilly Loompa piece, once trash, is now a meaningful piece of treasure,” she says.

Put your garden spotlight on trees

- it is Arbour Month!

South Africans celebrate Arbour Week in the first week of September to place the focus on these important inhabitants of our gardens. It is an opportune time to call on all South Africans to plant indigenous trees as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management. Arbour Week is this year celebrated from 30 August to 5 September during which time two trees are annually selected for special attention. In 2021 the common tree of the year is the sweet thorn (English), soetdoring (Afrikaans), mookana (North Sotho), mooka (Tswana) or the umuNga (Zulu, Xhosa). The rare or uncommon tree of the year for 2021 is the Portulacaria Afra or Spekboom, which is probably better known to many gardening enthusiasts. Formerly known as Acacia karroo, the sweet thorn is one of South Africa’s most beautiful and useful trees. It is integrally part of our country’s history and very widespread throughout southern Africa. The sweet thorn has a rounded crown, is variable in shape and size, reaching a maximum of about 12m where there is good water. The bark is red on young branches, darkening and becoming rough with age. The leaves are finely textured and dark green. The flowers appear in early summer in a mass of yellow pompons. Many insects visit and pollinate these flowers.

Growing The sweet thorn makes a beautiful garden specimen and the bright yellow flowers look very striking against the dark green foliage, are sweetly scented and attract insects which are essential to any bird garden. The sweet thorn is adaptable to soil types and is frost and drought hardy. However, for best performance, water well and deeply until established. Plant with plenty of compost, bone meal or superphosphates (commercial tree tablets also work well). The growth rate is fast, up to 1m per year. The Spekboom, Porkbush or Portulacaria afra is a popular succulent garden plant in use around the world and is often used for bonsai. It has now been shown to be effective in carbon sequestration, in semi-arid landscapes and thicket vegetation it is also being used for restoration purposes. Portulacaria afra is listed in the National Red List as Least Concern (LC) which indicates that it is not threatened in its natural habitat.

Growing This versatile plant can be used in full sun or semi-shade in dry areas or even in well-watered flowerbeds. It can tolerate a moderate degree of frost, especially when mature.

GARDEN VIEW

The Spekboom can be used as a screen or even a clipped hedge. It also makes a handsome and hardy bonsai. Various forms are found in cultivation, most of which originate from the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden in South Africa. These orms include a prostrate low growing ground cover, ‘Prostrata’; a shrubby form with small round leaves which turn an attractive yellow in full sun, ‘Aurea’ and ‘Foliis Variegatus’ a slow growing variegated form which is well suited to pot culture. The Spekboom is easily propagated from cuttings. Cuttings or truncheons strike root easily and can even be planted directly into the ground where they are to be grown. Alternatively, cuttings can be taken in the normal manner and allowed to dry out for a day or two in a cool, dry place and then planted in washed river sand. Keep them in a warm shady position until they are rooted and ready to be planted out. Cuttings root quickly and can usually be planted out after four to six weeks.
