The World of HME from the Perspective of an Industry Leader: Whitney Baker

When analyzing what the next generation of postacute homecare will look like, it’s important to understand what key leaders in the industry are saying. Below is an interview with Whitney Baker, Regional Operations Director with Home Medical Products, Inc., and her insights on how to navigate the ever-changing HME industry:

What key skills or competencies are essential for success in the HME industry?

Whitney: Being open-minded and always being able to grow your knowledge base are essential. The industry changes faster than most industries, and being able to maximize the resources provided by partners like VGM and others is crucial for delivering top-notch patient care.

[ ]Being open-minded and always being able to grow your knowledge base are essential.

Time management is another essential skill. Being able to balance your day to prioritize the tasks thrown at you day-to-day in HME is crucial.

Finally, servant leadership is paramount. This means always doing the best you can to serve your team in their careers, as well as serving patients. Growing your team and having their passion for patient care mirroring your company’s objectives will get you to the next level!

How do you balance compassion and business acumen in the HME field?

Whitney: I find balance by finding the best avenue for the patient that aligns with our business model. This mean exhausting all efforts to take care of patients. If you are not able to service them in a way that aligns with your standards, then work with a neighboring partner to assist in getting the patient the best care possible.

What strategies do you recommend for building strong industry partnerships?

Whitney: I recommend working with your vendor partners, and don’t try to work against them. Yes, try to get great pricing, but don’t get to a point where they do not want to work with your company. You never know when you might need them.

What challenges related to reimbursement and auditing surprised you the most?

Whitney: Going back to the standard rates with MCR recently put a huge cut on our industry, which was alarming. Another surprise was the discovery of Humana HMO contracts with national providers.

How has technology impacted the HME industry during your career?

Whitney: It has allowed us to scale our teams and maximize on our teams’ true skillsets. It has also allowed us to develop processes and reports with one click versus long, archaic processes most EMR systems force you to sift through to understand your book of business.

What role does patient-centered care play in successful HME businesses?

Whitney: It drives top-quality care, which provides the patients with a higher quality of life. We want our patients to follow our company quote, “#liveyourlife.” [ ]

We want our patients to follow our company quote, “#liveyourlife.”

It also allows you to show payors what you do differently to keep costs down and patients out of the hospital.

Q Q Q Q Q Q

The World of HME from the Perspective of an Industry Leader: Whitney Baker

What are the most significant changes you’ve witnessed in the HME landscape over the years?

Whitney: Technology has changed significantly.

There has also been a shift in the overall business model, including companies being more segmented in the products they accel with versus being a one-stop-shop. Reimbursement rates have also changed (and not in a good way).

Provider and patient expectations of delivery methods is another major change.

The higher level of respiratory care offered in the home for high-acuity patients is also a noticeable change in HME.

How do you handle the evolving regulatory environment in the HME sector?

Whitney: It is important to work with legislation at a local level, as well as lobbying and advocating in D.C. I appreciate the great efforts VGM, AAHomecare, and local associations put into helping our industry stay sound.

I strongly believe in servant leadership and dedicating your time to your team.

What personal qualities or leadership traits are essential for success in HME leadership roles?

Whitney: I strongly believe in servant leadership and dedicating your time to your team. Try to have one-on-one time with your team on a regular cadence to ensure you understand what their day-to-day looks like. If your team knows you can do their job and are willing to “play in the sandbox” with them during rough times, you will see a level of respect and appreciation that shines brightly!

What advice would you give your younger self about managing work, life, change, etc.?

Whitney: I would tell myself to take things one step at a time. You don’t always have to say yes to everything! And finally, be passionate about what you do, and it will show!

The World of HME from the Perspective of an Industry Leader: Mitchell Pantelides

When analyzing what the next generation of postacute homecare will look like, it’s important to understand what key leaders in the industry are saying. Below is an interview with Mitchell Pantelides, owner of CWB Medical Solutions, and his insights on how to navigate the ever-changing HME industry as a member of the new generation:

What leadership skills do you find most useful in navigating the complexities of the HME industry?

Mitchell: The ability to identify certain strengths of individuals on our team and having them manage different divisions of our organization.

How do you balance strategic decision-making with day-to-day operational challenges?

Mitchell: By having a strong support team in place with key people in charge of different product categories and/ or tasks.

Listen to the opinions of those in the field and be open to their ideas.

What advice would you give to someone stepping into a high-level leadership role for the first time?

Mitchell: Listen to the opinions of those in the field and be open to their ideas.

How do you foster innovation and adaptability within your team or organization?

Mitchell: Being accredited for almost every product in HME. This has given us many opportunities to grow and shift. Everyone within our organization is extremely openminded and constantly looking for new products that can both improve patients’ lives and gain new business.

What role does mentorship play in your leadership journey, and how can new leaders seek effective mentors?

Mitchell: The first thing I did when I decided to start my first company was to speak to as many veterans in the industry as I could, and I also sought out a consultant to act as my mentor. How do you build and maintain strong relationships with industry partners, suppliers, and stakeholders?

Mitchell: My preferred methods of communication are in-person meetings. Mutual connections have been key to starting many relationships, and investing time into getting to know each individual on a personal level has been crucial to maintaining those relationships.

What lessons have you learned from setbacks or failures during your leadership journey?

Mitchell: I have learned that there will be a lot of them in this industry, so I must let them go, learn from them, and move forward.

The World of HME from the Perspective of an Industry Leader: Mitchell Pantelides

Mitchell Pantelides, Owner, CWB Medical Solutions

What personal habits or routines contribute to your effectiveness as a leader in the HME industry?

Mitchell: Having an unwavering focus on achieving something each day to grow my business, checking in with intentionality, and calling people daily just to chat. It’s not to ask for something, but instead, it’s for genuine conversation. [ ]

I was blessed with many people who taught me along the way and were willing to invest time into me for no personal gain.

What challenges have you faced as a young leader?

Mitchell: Some of the biggest challenges I have faced as a young leader is having to take on so much industry knowledge in just three and a half years. I had never owned a business, and I had only five months of DME experience within one niche of the market. Thankfully, I was blessed with many people who taught me along the way and were willing to invest time into me for no personal gain.

Mitchell Pantelides is the owner of CWB Medical Solutions. Mitchell founded CWB Medical Solutions in August 2020 and has since grown it into a full-service national DME provider. Mitchell holds a B.S. in professional sales and marketing from Florida State University and an MBA in management from the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT). Connect with Mitchell on LinkedIn or email him at mitchell@cwbmed.com Q Q Q

What stereotypes have you had to overcome?

Mitchell: When I started CWB Medical Solutions, I was only 23 years old and did not have many years of experience under my belt. Many people were concerned about a 23-year-old handling the care of their patients. Building our network of insurances and licenses nationally helped to give me credibility that many began to take more seriously.

Advancements in Respiratory Technology: Shaping the Future of Patient Care

The field of respiratory care is rapidly evolving, driven by technological innovations that promise better patient outcomes and enhanced quality of life. As healthcare providers, staying abreast of these advancements is crucial to providing optimal care. At VGM, we are continuously looking for new ways our members can care for their patients by using cutting edge technology.

CPAP Adherence

VGM Sleep Services, a dedicated CPAP division, is at the forefront of leveraging technology to improve patient compliance and outcomes. Their mission is to establish lasting relationships with patients, ensuring ongoing success in managing sleep apnea. By addressing staffing challenges and cost concerns, they empower members to focus on patient care.

leading to over 70% of patients remaining compliant after the first year. The program encompasses patient onboarding, coaching, adherence support, and regular progress reports. A particularly appealing feature of this program is that DME members incur no cost to manage eligible patients.

Technology Advancements

Sanusom and VGM Sleep Services have recently partnered to help enhance CPAP adherence. They made strides in the management of sleep apnea through a remote patient monitoring model and have developed a collaborative PAP adherence program that provides support to patients beyond the first 90 days of treatment. [ ]

Sanusom’s program stands out due to its duration, spanning seven months, in contrast to the industry standard of 90 days.

O2 Concepts is a trailblazer in respiratory technology, contributing significantly to oxygen therapy. They have provided numerous technological contributions to respiratory care and oxygen therapy. O2 Concepts’ portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are also equipped with proprietary DNA Technology®, which allows for the daily transmission of therapy adherence and device performance data. Instead of sending clinical staff to the patient to complete a concentrator check, staff members can now do this task virtually, saving an incredible amount of time and allowing providers to reallocate clinical resources to more profitable areas of the business. This proactive, device-initiated connectivity helps healthcare providers stay ahead of potential issues and improve device recovery rates and asset management practices, while also providing levels of efficiency, outcomes, and profitability.

While not directly involved in respiratory care, Darby has developed technology that significantly improves the delivery of healthcare services. The company’s AIenabled order processing technology, known as Smart Intake, automates PDF order processing, reducing time, cost, and clerical errors. Having a system working with providers to reduce the heavy manual load of paperwork allows providers to better assist their patients and reduces data entry errors.

Advancements in Respiratory Technology: Shaping the Future of Patient Care

This technology is designed to fit the way healthcare providers already work, making it an efficient and effective tool for managing patient intake.

Asset management is another concern for providers. Assets can go missing by having another medical equipment company pick up the equipment, they can be damaged due to temperatures, or patients may lose the equipment. This can cost a provider thousands of dollars with each asset lost or damaged. Trace has developed an asset tracking program to keep track of any asset. This tracking can help reduce the average 8%-10% of inventory loss. This allows the provider to be able to see where all the assets are, especially if the provider has multiple branch locations in several different states.

The future of respiratory care is bright.

As these companies and others continue to innovate, we can expect to see further improvements in patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. The future of respiratory care is bright, and these companies are paving the way.

VGM Respiratory has partnered with many thought leaders in the industry. Our focus is to help members be able to use their time efficiently, be more efficient, and at lower labor costs. With the decrease in available employees to ensure the bottom line is protected, technology will help with these results. We actively identify SaaS platforms that will transform day-to-day operations. These partnerships will enhance our members’ ability to leverage the latest technological advancements in respiratory care, thereby enabling them to provide superior care to their patients.

What’s Next for CRT? Insights from Next Generation of Leadership

The future of complex rehab technology (CRT) is emerging. As technology continues to evolve, so does the field of CRT. From mobility devices to communication aids, CRT plays a pivotal role in enhancing quality of life and promoting independence.

[CRT plays a pivotal role in enhancing quality of life and promoting independence.

I have been with VGM and working in DME for almost 11 years but have spent the last five years solely focused on CRT. CRT is the segment of DME that I really enjoy; the manufacturers, the providers, the events throughout the year, there’s something different about CRT that is inspiring. The custom nature of the business and the expertise that is necessary to navigate this space is something that has always piqued my interest.

The CRT industry is constantly changing and growing, and I believe it is essential to keep up with the latest developments and innovations. I actively participate in professional communities, attend relevant events, and follow the latest research in the field. I also do my homework and explore the CRT markets in Europe and Asia to anticipate the future trends and opportunities in the U.S. market. I have plans to visit some shows in 2024 and 2025 and bring back some ideas and products that I think will benefit the industry in the long run. Additionally, I learn a lot from networking and interacting with everyone involved in the industry, such as manufacturers, providers, industry leaders, and so on.

Challenges in CRT

With any evolving industry comes its challenges, and CRT is no different.

The ATP shortage poses a serious threat to the future accessibility of assistive technology.

ATP Shortage

The availability of Assistive Technology Professionals (ATPs) is essential for delivering quality CRT products to clients. However, the industry has been facing a shortage of ATPs in recent years. This poses a serious threat to the future accessibility of assistive technology. U.S. Rehab is committed to providing educational resources to the industry so that technicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists etc. can prepare for and pass the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) exam to become a certified ATP.

Navigating the Payer Landscape

Another major challenge that will persist throughout the foreseeable future is the political and regulatory environment in Washington, D.C., primarily with payers. Advantage plans remain a difficult issue for U.S. Rehab members, and we must keep supporting our member partners and their clients to navigate this complicated space.

Repair Issues

The industry must also find a way to facilitate collaboration among the manufacturers, providers, and the consumers to address the right to repair issues effectively. We acknowledge that wheelchair users have experienced delays in getting their chairs fixed, but we also recognize that there are obstacles and bureaucratic hurdles that prevent this from happening, such as prior authorization for parts and continued need documentation.

What’s Next for CRT? Insights from Next Generation of Leadership

Opportunities and Advocacy

While these challenges will continue, there are also many things to look forward to. One of the positive developments that I anticipate is the increased availability of seat elevation for clients who need it. Thanks to the current coverage criteria, many more clients qualify for seat elevation and can now benefit from this feature that was previously inaccessible to them.

Advocacy is the key to our success in CRT.

I am also hopeful that the CRT industry can advance the legislation that supports funding for power standing wheelchairs and upgrades for manual wheelchairs, such as carbon and titanium upgrades. These options can make a significant difference in the quality of life and health of our clients, and I hope to see them approved by D.C. in 2024.

However, none of these achievements are possible without advocacy. Advocacy is the key to our success in CRT. It was through advocacy that we secured funding for seat elevation, and it is through advocacy that we can pursue funding for power standing and titanium and carbon upgrades, as well as address the right to repair issues.

Emerging Technologies in CRT

AI is a key technology that will transform the future of complex rehabilitation and how our provider partners operate their businesses.

When it comes to emerging technologies that will significantly impact the future of complex rehabilitation, the biggest technological impact that we will see here in the very near future is within artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is a key technology that will transform the future of complex rehabilitation and how our provider partners operate their businesses. I believe AI will have many benefits, such as improving the quality of ATPs’ evaluations, simplifying the claims processing for billers, and enhancing the efficiency of customer service representatives. It will eliminate human error and automate the tedious tasks that we currently do, leaving us to focus on the work that requires human judgment and creativity. Some people may fear this change, but I am excited for us to move into this next generation and welcome this opportunity to enter a new era.

Insights from Next Generation of Leadership

The Next “Big Thing” in CRT

Remote monitoring can help us detect and prevent problems with wheelchairs before they affect the users.

One of the most promising developments in CRT is the remote monitoring of clients and their chairs. This technology is already in use by some organizations, but it has the potential to be much more advanced and widespread in the future. Remote monitoring can help us detect and prevent problems with wheelchairs before they affect the users. For example, we can anticipate motor failure and fix it before it leaves the users stranded without their chairs. This can significantly reduce the downtime and improve the quality of life for our clients.

CRT is a dynamic and innovative field that offers many opportunities for growth and development.

CRT is a dynamic and innovative field that offers many opportunities for growth and development. I believe that CRT has the potential to transform the world with its cutting-edge technologies and applications. CRT has a bright future ahead, and I am eager to contribute to the industry as it adapts to the next generation of trends.

Your Career Compass: Developing Your Personal Leadership Values

As you embark or continue your journey toward becoming an effective leader, it’s essential to recognize that leadership is not just about holding a title or occupying a corner office. True leadership transcends formal authority—it’s about influence, vision, and the impact and value you create.

True leadership transcends formal authority.

Aspiring leaders often wonder how to foster their leadership abilities and create a legacy. One crucial aspect of effective leadership is developing personal values that guide your decisions, actions, and interactions. Trust is the currency of effective leadership.

Influence and Trust: When your values are consistent and transparent, you build trust with your team. Trust is the currency of effective leadership.

Decision-Making: Values serve as decision-making filters. When faced with tough choices, refer to your core values—they’ll guide you toward the right path.

Defining Your Own Values

1 Assess Where You Are Professionally

Before diving into defining your values, take stock of your current professional situation:
