Who doesn’t love summer? Even as adults we look forward to school being out. Because with it comes high temps, cool waters, and an excuse to have a little sand between our toes. Ah yes…summer is a time to enjoy a slightly slower pace. But just because summer vacation may mean a break from class time, it doesn’t mean the learning has to stop completely. On the contrary, I find summer to be the perfect time to learn something new; something I’m genuinely interested in – taking up a new hobby, trying a cooking class, checking out this city that I love, or finally mastering that computer program I’ve been putting off. If you’re sticking around Cincinnati, you can use Communiversity as a way to turn your family’s staycation into a worthwhile time! If summer is taking you off to somewhere else take advantage of learning on the go. Communiversity offers over 300 online courses – accessible from most any device. This summer, try one thing new. You won’t regret it. I promise, you’ll still have time to fit in a few lazy summer days. Janet Staderman, Program Director

ASTRONOMY NEW! HOW TO USE YOUR TELESCOPE Do you have a telescope sitting in the closet or over in the corner and you would love to use it if you only knew how? Do the dials and knobs leave you mystified? Intimidated? Which end do you look through? There are all of these various pieces that do what? Perhaps you know how your telescope works (sort of), but you’re not sure what to do with it. You say you can find the Moon, but beyond that, the telescope won’t cooperate. Fear not! The answers are all here. However, much you know or don’t know about YOUR telescope, I guarantee you will leave with enough knowledge to take on your scope, one-on-one, and come out victorious. We start with the sky and end with your eye. Your telescope will forever be your friend (until you get a bigger friend!). Bring your telescope along, cardboard spyglass or Hubble wannabe, and we’ll make this a hands-on learning experience.

SPACEBALLS How would a home run look on Mars? Could you hit a baseball off the Moon? Answering these questions requires knowledge of physics, mathematics, and planetary science, but it’s not as hard as one might think. With the right information, anyone can figure it out! Join local astrophysicist Aaron Eiben at the Cincinnati Observatory to see just how. If the sky is clear, we will also gaze through the best telescope in town. Instructor: Aaron Eiben Monday, July 16, 8-10 pm, $35

“So much information. Everyone should come here!”

Instructor: Dave Bosse Tuesday, July 17, 8–10 pm, $35

The Moon will be viewed through the telescope following the program, weather permitting. Instructor: John Ventre Tuesday, September 18, 8-10 pm, $35

at the Observatory class

LONGITUDE: JOHN HARRISON AND HIS CLOCKS Knowing what time, it is, exactly, has been part and parcel of knowing where you are on the planet, especially at sea. Comparing sky-time with your clock-time told you where you were, your longitude. This was a nearly impossible task with the mechanisms of early time keeping up to the 18th century, which resulted in seafaring catastrophe after catastrophe; lost at sea or found on the reef. All of that changed in the 1700’s because of the life-long work of a third-grade educated, back-woods carpenter, who took on the scientific establishment of his day and brought us into the world of modern, accurate time-keeping. John Harrison’s clocks and advances in clock making told us what time it is, exactly, and set records in accuracy that stood for centuries, even into the 21st century. Let’s find out what makes clocks tick (literally). Instructor: Dave Bosse Wednesday, September 5, 7–9 pm, $35

HOW WE KNOW WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE UNIVERSE This course reviews the technologies and techniques astronomers use to explore and understand the Universe, beginning with 19th century spectroscopic discoveries to present-day detection of gravity waves. Instructor: Terry Endres

CINCINNATI LOCAL

NEW! EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF CINCINNATI

NEW! OHIO’S JOURNEYS TO WORLD WAR I

What do you think are Cincinnati’s wonders? The inside story behind 8 Wonders of Cincinnati shows you how author Wendy Hart Beckman chose which wonders to describe -- and which ones to leave on the cutting room floor. Illustrated by Allison Ranieri, 8 Wonders of Cincinnati includes a variety of modern and historic photographs, as well as original art created by Ranieri. We’ll discuss how authors approach the research and writing of such a book. You’ll also pick up some tips on publishing along the way!

On April 6, 1917, the United States officially entered World War I and over 200,000 Ohioans played a major role in the Great War. It seems fitting this Spring that we celebrate Ohio’s history in this great war. This program brings to life the history of this event with historic photos of the war and documents as seen through the eyes of local Cincinnatians. Our grandparents and great-grandparents who were involved in that “conflict” are gone and, at best, most people do not see them as the young vital men that they were when this happened. Few ever talked about the war. Come and discover names of WWI heroes in Southwest Ohio that you might not know. Instructor: Cheri Brinkman

The Complete Financial Workshop Gary Hollander says his favorite saying is, “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.” He explains, “The people who come to me to develop a financial plan (which Hollander coins “a financial physical”) are lost and confused as to how to meet their goals or objectives. At about age 50, folks look at their retirement, not their mortality, and become frightened. Fear of failing financially. Fear of running out money.” This class is not just another retirement planning workshop. “It is for any adult who wants to take charge of their financial life and needs tools to make better decisions for the rest of their life. Retirement is one of many things, but there are other considerations: insurance, kid’s college, liability, etc.”

NEW MEDIA MARKETING

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

NEW! ACHIEVING TOP SEARCH ENGINE POSITIONS

NEW! BECOME A WEDDING OFFICIANT

The vast majority of Web traffic comes from search engines. That means the most important thing you can do to increase your website’s traffic is to improve its search engine ranking. To do that, you have to understand both the art and science of search engine optimization (SEO). In this course, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to boost your website’s visibility. You’ll also explore how to select keywords, why you should amass as many potential keyword choices as possible, and which keywords hold the most potential.

The modern couple is getting creative in all aspects of their wedding plans: choosing nontraditional spaces and tons of personalization, including asking close friends to perform their ceremonies. But what are the steps you need to take to get to become legally able to perform weddings in the Tri-State, and where do you start if it’s a destination wedding? Civil Celebrant Jill Gibboney has been marrying Cincinnati couples for over a decade, and in this course, she will teach you the hassle-free steps to take to make your friends’ days super-special, or start a little ‘side hustle’ doing weddings. This Summer, join James Kiffmeyer, RPh., BS, MA, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati James L.Winkle College of Pharmacy, as he reveals the most essential and community used vitamins and minerals and covers natural substances for pain management in two new courses offered for Summer: Vitamins, Minerals and You on Wednesday, August 8, and Pain Management and Drug Therapy, on Wednesday, July 18. “Most people tend to think that their metabolism is too slow, or that carbs are bad,” said Sarah Williams, who teaches the new Communiversity course Master Your Metabolism, Thursday, August 9. “There is a lot of misinformation out there and it leads to confusion and frustration.” In Master Your Metabolism, students will learn about good and bad calories from a macro-nutrient perspective and gain an understanding of counting macros and metabolic positioning. Williams will also teach strategies for meal planning and prepping as well as dining out. By the end of the workshop, students will walk away with many resources to start their individualized macro diet and shed fat fast. The food choices we make every day directly affect our health, our community and the well-being of the earth. “My father always made sure we had a garden, which we ate out of all summer long,” Communiversity instructor Theresia Marsh said. “Although we kids didn’t really like weeding it, we’re grateful for it now.” In Eating to Better Your Environment, Saturday June 30, you will learn about ways to reduce your environmental impact through your food decisions, while improving your food’s flavor and nutrition and simultaneously strengthening your community. We will also cover local food resources.

Unsolvable Problems and the Role of Polarity Thinking Are you facing a recurring problem or challenge in your personal life that, over time, hasn’t been easily solved? Or, in your profession, are you in need of real-time, useful data that can tell you the views of different stakeholders toward initiatives, such as improving customer or client satisfaction, saving money or strategically planning for success? Consider what happens in your life if you over-focus on work and neglect your home and family. Relationships at home suffer. You become stressed. You may ultimately be less productive at work. Or, what if you were to pay more attention to your family or home rather than work? Work relationships suffer, and you might even hurt your chances of promotion, or lose your job! Likewise, in an increasingly on-demand business world, leaders are required to make tough decisions and manage daily tensions. These decisions and pressures are many times a result of overemphasizing one value or point of view to the neglect of equally important ones. In two new courses this Summer, Dr. Melinda Butsch Kovacic, co-founder of Ignite Partnerships, Inc., introduces Polarity Thinking. A theory, process, or tool that lets us tap into the thinking of each side to minimize the fear that each one may conjure up. Once we do that, we’ll be better aware of the interdependent conflicts between the values of each side so we can work toward linking both sides together. It’s about “both-and” and invites a move away from “you are wrong, and I am right” thinking to “we are both right.” “There are two truths to every polarity and neither one—on its own—is the whole truth.” Dr. Butsch Kovacic is a doctoral trained academic administrator and clinical and community researcher who is a Master of Polarity Thinking trained under the creator of Polarity Thinking, Barry Johnson, co-founder of Polarity Partnerships. Dr. Butsch Kovacic has used Polarity Thinking to mentor students and faculty, to support organizational strategic planning, to enhance research enterprises, and to support her personal development, as well as her own and others’ marriages and relationships. She has previously presented her applications of Polarity Thinking in her 2017 TEDx UCincinnati Talk. Over the last two years, she and her business partner, Theresa Baker, have shared their knowledge and applications of Polarity Thinking in short workshops.
