Communiversity at the University of Cincinnati offers convenient and innovative classes designed to boost your career and enrich your life. Classes are noncredit, informal and fun! Online and face-to-face class options. 2

During the winter, many of our surroundings are in hibernation mode. Much like the tea plant, which goes into a “low power mode to conserve the decreased sunlight and nutrients available during the colder season, humans are really no different. The winter tends to slow us down and keep us indoors more. But, Spring is here! And just as the tea plant uses its stored energy to develop new growth, we should too. This Spring, Communiversity offers a wide variety of new classes for your personal growth and enrichment. With new classes and experiences like painting a Tahitian Landscape, baking French Macarons, walking tours in historic downtown Newport and Eden Park, yoga classes on and off campus, and even tennis and golf lessons with the pros; there are several opportunities to use your stored-up energy. And if our friend the tea plant inspired you to jump start some growth of your own, be sure to check out our Herbal Wellness Tea Blending Workshop, to learn some of the benefits found in the tea leaf. Happy Spring! Janet Staderman, Program Director

ASTRONOMY Location: All classes held at the Cincinnati Observatory Center

Instructor bios available online at uc.edu/ce/commu “Fascinating history! Dave is extremely knowledgeable, accessible and funny. Excellent class! ” - student from our Astronomy class

The Cincinnati Observatory strives to share the universe and our historic site with all our visitors, and to comply with ADA guidelines, will make all reasonable accommodations to ensure a positive experience when visiting the Observatory. However, please note that there are limitations imposed by our architecture, being a National Historic Landmark, and our being a functioning astronomical observatory. The physical act of getting to the telescope’s eyepiece for viewing can also be an issue. The eyepieces on our two main telescopes can be anywhere from 4 feet to over 14 feet above the floor, which typically requires climbing a stepped platform to reach.

BIG BANG: THE FIRST THREE MINUTES An awful lot happened in the beginning moments of the history of the Universe. First, there was nothing and then... there was everything. It did take a little while, though; cosmologists say about three minutes. Have you ever wondered how things came to be the way they are? The lumpiness of matter or the emptiness of space? Planets, stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies; all of it started very small. So how did it get to be called the BIG Bang? If a cosmos falls in a void, does it make a sound? So, what’s up with this idea of a BANG, anyway? What went bang? When did it bang? Did it actually bang? Was there anything before the Big Bang and where was that? We’ll answer these questions and perhaps some others as we explore the where, when, what, how and why of the beginning of the cosmos. Instructor: Dave Bosse Monday, April 30, 7–9 pm $35

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE OBSERVATORY Look to the heavens through the oldest continuously used telescope in the world; explore the depths of the 1873 observatory including its attic and basement; and learn why President Adams laid the observatory’s original cornerstone in 1843. Hear the fascinating history of the founding of the observatory; investigate how the 19th century astronomers determined time for the city of Cincinnati; discover why the observatory was designated a National Historic Landmark; and find out what is in store for the future. The Moon will be viewed through the telescope following the program, weather permitting. Instructor: John Ventre Tuesday, May 22, 7–9 pm $35

BINOCULAR ASTRONOMY Sure, binoculars aren’t exactly the Hubble Space Telescope, but they are actually quite capable astronomical instruments that provide a unique and refreshing view of the Celestial Heavens. When both of your eyes get involved with seeing, a synergy takes place in your brain that enhances the image beyond what a single retina can deliver. Even common binoculars will reveal the constellations more intimately, the phases of Venus or the moons of Jupiter. Dozens of “deep sky” objects (galaxies, nebulae, and such) are visible with inexpensive binoculars. Large or small, name brand or not, bring along your binoculars. Instructor: Dave Bosse Wednesday, May 9, 7–9 pm, $35

NEW! HOW WE KNOW WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE UNIVERSE This course reviews the technologies and techniques astronomers use to explore and understand the Universe, beginning with 19th century spectroscopic discoveries to present-day detection of gravity waves. Instructor: Terry Endres Monday, April 23, 7–9 pm, $35

CINCINNATI LOCAL

NEW! AN AFTERNOON IN THE OLD & NEW SOUTH

NEW! CINCINNATI & SOUP: A HISTORY OF CINCINNATI’S MOST FAMOUS FESTIVALS AND FOOD

Monday, May 7, 7–9 pm, $39

This April, the Historic Preservation Office of Newport, Kentucky takes us on a tour of the Southgate Street School. Built in 1873 and expanded in 1893 this school was the only public school in Campbell County for African-American students until integration in 1955. It was designated a local landmark in 2010 and now serves the community as a historical museum. Following the Southgate Street School tour, we will tour the General James Taylor Mansion, in Historic downtown Newport, KY in the East Row District, with vintage costumed docents. In the early 1790s, James Taylor came to the wilderness at the mouth of the Licking River and selected the highest point on his land grant to build his home. In 1815, he replaced that first log home with a grand Federal Style home designed by Benjamin Latrobe, called “Belle Vue.” Latrobe designed part of the Capital Building in Washington and worked with the wife of the 4th President, Dolly Madison on the White House. The Taylor house was damaged by a fire in 1842 and rebuilt in 1845; yet Latrobe touches remain.

Graff says that while working with metal can be physically challenging, welding offers the perfect opportunity for those looking to hone their creativity and develop problem-solving skills. “The mental and physical aspects complement each other nicely. I enjoy working with metal because at its core, it’s taking very simple things, like steel and fire and a hammer, and with practice you can hone your skills to make something beautiful,” said Graff. Graff is an expert welder/fabricator and UC graduate in mechanical engineering. He believes arts can be both functional and sculptural, and anything is possible when using metals as an artistic medium.
