Whether you are a fresh-faced new student or a seasoned veteran returning to face another trimester, we are excited to be a part of your professional development at whatever stage you are at! But regardless, it is without a doubt that everyone begins to feel that building imminent pressure to secure that certain graduate role towards the completion of their degree. For us at least, this was (and is) the case. Especially in comparison to others, at times it seems like we are falling behind in the career race, or moving too fast and missing out on novel experiences unique to our 20s.

It certainly is confusing as to where or when to start this race; you may feel a little lost or completely overwhelmed. But that is why the UNSW Business Society (BSOC) exists - to help you define your journey and provide you with different avenues and opportunities to achieve it, beyond merely textbooks or lectures.

Through this, we want to make your endeavour just that little bit easier and help you ace your first, second or third interview.

Supported by the UNSW Business School, BSOC is here to empower you to form your own narrative. As a nonfor-profit organisation run by students for students, we offer you a quintessential university experience - one that develops your technical skills and provides you with opportunities to expand your networks from orientation, progression to graduation.

So this year, we have a challenge for you. To try something, not because everyone else is doing so, but because you want to. To shoot for the moon, not because if you fail you will still land amongst the stars, but that even if you land amongst the stars you are that much closer to achieving your goals. To drive at your own pace, because everyone defines success by different measures.

This Careers Guide is just one by-product of this goal, and we encourage you to peruse

Networking

1 Network with Purpose!

Networking is an often complex matter, especially for those who are new to it or faced with a similar situation for the first time. Questions such as ‘what should I say?’ or ‘what should I wear?’ will often pop into the mind’s of these individuals. That is why it is important to ‘network with purpose’ to get the best experience possible and all the answers you want. To start off, it is great to create small goals in areas you would like to work on. For example, if you want to increase your confidence, meet a new friend or gain industry contacts. Moreover, think of a few topics or questions you would like to discuss before the networking event. The best questions are the ones that can not be answered by a simple “yes” or “no”, such as: “What role do you undertake at your company?” “What is it about working at your company that is different compared to others?” “How did you get involved in your field?”

For first year students, having the ability to network with confidence will open up a lot of doorways as there are so many great chances to discover the various career opportunities students may be interested in. It is also a perfect time for you to find out more about the potential firms that they may be interested to work at. For penultimate or final year students, networking events are a great time to foster new connections. It is important to get acquainted or ask questions about internship placements or graduate opportunities that certain firms may offer.

2 Research and Be Informed

When it comes to networking events, it is crucial that you can maintain a good impression. By taking the time to research the firm, you may come across potential questions you would like clarification or even better, important information that will allow you to keep engaging conversations.

6

3 Actively Listen

Networking involves the process of both receiving and giving information. Listening attentively to the person you are talking to will allow you to establish rapport by showing interest in their delivery of advice. An effective listener will implement both verbal and non-verbal cues, maintain good eye-contact and respond appropriately to the conversation to convey their engagement to the other person.

4 Follow Up New Contacts

Never be afraid to follow up with the individuals you meet at an event. You can pop up to them by sending an email or a friendly LinkedIn message telling them you enjoyed the conversation you shared, and make reference to some of the topics you discussed that were of interest, if appropriate. Finally, make sure you make the most out of the events you go to by building valuable relationships with both sponsors and attendees at the event you never know where those connections may lead!

CG ‘20

Attire and Appearance Dress for Success Whether it be networking events, job interviews or corporate jobs, what you wear and how you act can play a major role in how others perceive you. Your dress code expresses a visual image to employers regarding your attitude to the company and professionalism in general - so don’t underestimate the power of a sharp suit or blouse! Body language is another subliminal way others assess your credibility, leadership and trustworthiness. Ensure you maintain eye contact, reduce nervous gestures and maintain a good posture.

For men

For women

Business Casual

Business Formal

Business casual incorporates a style of professionalism with a relaxed feel. For example, this may be worn for informal corporate events.

Business formal is the standard dress code expected in corporate firms as well as more formal networking events.

• Business separates, rather than a full suit. A skirt worn with a cardigan or jacket for example. • Coloured shirts and blouses, rather than collared button-downs. Choose a solid neutral colour or muted patterns like stripes or checks, avoiding low-cut shirts, plunging shirts and bright patterns. • Shoes may be comfortable flats, loafers as well as pumps but should remain closed-toe. Aim for neutral colours such as black, brown, navy and grey.

• A well-cut pantsuit or skirt suit in a conservative colour such as black, navy or brown. • White button-ups with a collar or a conservative blouse. • Closed-toe heels in a neutral colour such as taupe, black, grey or brown. • Neat and simple hair, makeup and jewellery. Depending on the event and company, body piercings and tattoos should be covered. • Skirts never more than two finger-widths above the knees.

• Wear collared button-ups in white, blue, or pink. Conservative patterns like checkers or stripes are acceptable, with or without a tie. • Ties should be solid, neutral colours like black, navy or grey or have a simple pattern. • Pullovers and sweaters worn over shirts should be solid, striped or another conservative pattern. Aim for colours that contrast with the shirt worn underneath. • Shoes can be oxfords, loafers, or any other comfortable dress shoes in brown or black. Formal boots are also acceptable, however, avoid sneakers.

• A tailored suit in a solid, neutral colour such as black, grey or navy. • Ties and other accessories should be both modest in colour and style – solid colours or striped patterns in muted or neutral tones. No novelty ties such as polka dots or colour changing. • White, collared button-up shirts or blue, collared button-up shirts that complement suit choice. • Appropriate accessories such as a black belt, watch or cufflinks can also be valuable additions.

Phone Interview

Video Interview

Generally conducted by the HR team, phone interviews can be both scheduled and unscheduled. The questions asked may vary from behavioural and motivational to questions about the relevant industry.

Video interviews are becoming increasingly more popular. These are often scheduled to suit your time and date and requires a webcam or device with a front-facing camera and microphone.

Potential questions include: • Why did you apply for this role and what sets you apart from other candidates? • What are your strengths that can be utilised in this role? • What are your weaknesses? • What is the most important thing you look for in a job/company?

Top Tips • Make sure you have a pen and paper by your side • Find a quiet place where you can take a business call • If you are called at an inconvenient time, ask if you can talk at another time and suggest alternatives

Situational Questions

Behavioural Questions

Situational questions are used to demonstrate how you would handle a hypothetical situation.

Interviewers will have a list of skills which they will ask you to demonstrate by presenting a situation in which you behaved in a specific way. The best approach is to prepare beforehand by using the STAR technique to write out a list of skills you think the employer would need. For example, in a customer service role, employers look for teamwork and communication skills, so think about situations in which you demonstrated these skills.

TIPS: • Think about the question carefully before responding - don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat the question or ask for time to think. • Break down the situation in your head and apply a step by step logical process for your solution. • Practice, practice, practice - it is difficult to guess the situational questions that will be asked so the best approach is to practice responding under pressure to a broad range of questions.

Examples of common questions: • Tell me about a time when you demonstrated good leadership. • Tell me about a time when a project you were in charge of fell behind schedule. What did you do about it?

Competency Interview

S

Competency interviews are used to evaluate a candidate’s key competencies, especially where it is difficult to select based on technical merit. Questions may delve into a particular skill or competency or knowledge of the firm and the industry as opposed to questions about industry experience.

T A

Partner Interview An interview run by a partner of the respective firm. Generally these interviews are used to assess a candidate’s personality fit for a firm.

R 9

SITUATION

TASK

Explain the task you had to complete, highlighting any specific challenges or constraints e.g. deadlines, issues or costs.

Trimesters

Since 2019, UNSW works on a three-term academic calendar model, also known as UNSW 3+. UNSW3+ means 3 x 10 teaching week terms with an optional 5 week intensive summer term. There will be roughly 2 weeks break between each “Trimester” and students will be given the option to take up to 3 courses per term. To enrol for courses, students choose all courses at the beginning of the year with class time slots open at the start of each trimester.

when taking 3 a trimester as opposed to 8 when taking 4 a semester. At the same time the greater flexibility provided by trimesters means more flexibility in your choices when deciding when to take time off for internships, work, volunteering and exchange opportunities. This means you can now better determine how you want to undertake your education.

Theses changes means several things for you as a student. You can now graduate faster as it is easier to complete more courses a year; 9 courses

Term dates for UNSW3+ have been finalised for 2020.

Things to make a note of! • Make sure you plan carefully what courses you want to do for the upcoming year.

• Full time students are now considered based on trimesters! The minimum requirement is 2 courses a term or a total of 12 units of credit per term (one course being 6 units of credit generally).

• Ensure that the courses you want to do are offered in that specific term.

• To check if you make the full timer status, refer to UNSW’s online system here: https://student.unsw. edu.au/new-calendar-load

• Make sure you read your course handbook to ensure enrolment into the correct classes. 16

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

Accounting Connecting many different aspects of a business together, accounting is the vital link between upper management decision making and the front-of-office revenue. Accountants look over the financial transactions and financial statements, making sure the process is accurate and as seamless as possible. By analyzing and coherently understanding the accounting financial statements, accountants are therefore equipped with the knowledge to maintain the economic front of the business. The accounting department represents a vital part for each company as they are tailored towards the operations and functions of each business. They ensure the accounts system is efficiently run and properly managed as well as providing internal and external reporting of a business. Specific roles and responsibilities of the accountant will vary from business to business, so it is imperative for aspiring employees to research the job they are interested in and to make sure it meets their expectations.

Management Accounting

Management Accounting is utilised in many companies whereby accountants provide services and information for internal processes, typically to advise managers on how to control company assets and allocate resources. This will involve preparing reports and accounts that provide timely and reliable financial information leading to cost-cutting and cost-effective decisions. Unlike financial accounting, the main stakeholders are an organisation’s internal parties such as department managers and directors who are able to use the weekly and monthly reports to bolster operations in key areas such as cash, accounts payable, inventory and sales revenue generated. .

HANNAH WALLACE Strategy Associate

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? I am currently a strategy associate at Woolworths. This involves working on projects that contribute to the overall strategy of the supermarkets business. Most recently I have been part of the project team delivering the roll out of reverse vending machines across our stores for the NSW container deposit scheme. How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I completed a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in accounting and finance at university. I was keen to get experience early on, actively seeking out vacation work, including an internship at EY in my penultimate year. Upon completion of my studies, I secured a graduate position at Woolworths. As a graduate I was able to experience both commercial and corporate finance roles as well as a secondment in the strategy team. My studies at university helped me to grasp the technical aspects of my role, however it is the soft skills I developed through my involvement with clubs and societies on campus that have been most valuable.

Can you tell us about your work culture and environment? What sets it apart? Woolworths has a very inclusive work culture which encourages and celebrates diversity. Retail is a team game and worktions Is crucial to our success. We have recently transitioned from allocated desks to a flexible working environment to further improve collaboration between teams. One of the things that I am particularly proud of is the strong community focus. Woolworths supports many local and national charities which often means fundraising morning teas or mufti days at Do you have any advice for someone applying for CA? Or the field you're involved in? Making a positive impact on the world and in the lives of others

Rebecca Glover CA is a Chartered Accountant and Chief Financial Officer at World Vision Australia – the world’s largest private humanitarian development organisation, operating in over 90 countries across the world. As a Chief Financial Officer, I’m responsible for 50 staff and a number of departments. The traditional markets in which we operate are fundamentally changing. And given this environment, it’s people with strong analytical, problem solving and forecasting skills that stand out when I’m hiring business professionals. For that reason, I always prize candidates with a Chartered Accountant designation. Quite simply, they’re the people who will most quickly adapt to these changing markets. As a Chartered Accountant I understand how challenging it was to get that accreditation – the process, the rigour and the training. Seeing that designation immediately gives me a sense of the capability and calibre of that person.

MEGAN MACKAY Graduate

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in?

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? ShineWing Australia has a supportive work environment with an open and social culture. When you start as a grad, you are assigned a buddy who is there to help you find your feet and make your transition from uni to work as easy as possible. Within my division we work in teams of 8-10 people, and they end up being like your work family who make you look forward to coming to the office each day. There are lots of great opportunities to meet people across all divisions of the firm both socially and professionally. There are regular team building events, end of month drinks, an annual ball, social club events and we also participate in various CA sporting tournaments and social netball throughout the year.

I work in the Business and Private Client Advisory (BPCA) division and my duties can be wide and varied. BPCA offers a variety of services to a diverse industry and client base, including but not limited to high net worth individuals, family groups, private and public entities. The team I’m in focuses on the automotive industry and my work is made up of a mix of compliance (preparation of financial statements and tax returns), ad hoc consulting work (tax reviews and performance reporting) and reviewing junior staff's work.

Can you tell us about ShineWing's work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

Do you have any advice for someone applying for ShineWing? Or the field you're involved in?

For anyone applying for ShineWing Australia I'd say to make sure you share a bit of your personality or other interests besides accounting in your application and interviews. While it’s very impressive if someone has well developed technical skills, these can always be taught on the job. People skills are just as important - you need to show that you can build relationships with colleagues and clients, and will work well with a team. That’s something that is a lot harder to learn!

Consulting Consulting is becoming an increasingly broader industry incorporating roles such as management consultants, recruitment consultants and business advisors, to name just a few. Thus consultancy is a varied profession, with projects and clients changing constantly. This can be the beauty but also the challenge of the profession. Regardless of your major, if you’re a creative problem-solver who is interested in different types of business models, then being a consultant might just be for you. Consultants divide into two broad types: strategy and operations. Strategy consultants advise management teams on top-level decisions like prioritizing new markets to enter, developing price strategy, mergers and acquisitions, how much to invest in research and development, how to structure the organisation and how to deal with competitive threats. Operations consulting is more about how to implement strategy, for instance; how to improve the efficiency of the recruitment process, or implement a new sales strategy. The industry is divided into the ‘Big 3’ strategy consulting firms (McKinsey, Bain, BCG), the ‘Big 4 professional services firms (PwC, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, KPMG) who primarily do operations consulting (as well as auditing and accounting), and a large number of small ’boutique’ companies, who often specialise in a particular type of situation or subject matter.

Interview with:

JACQUELINE LAM Application Development Associate

The great thing about my role is that it varies depending on the project I’m assigned to and the position I am assigned to within that team. For one project, whilst I initially joined the team as a business analyst, I took the initiative to carry out a project management role given this role was unassigned and I believed was necessary to track progress and meet deadlines. Your role really is what you make of it!

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I studied a Bachelor of Commerce and Information Systems at UNSW. Coming from an information systems background, I was pleasantly surprised that I could relate some concepts I’d picked up at uni and was able apply them at Accenture. You pick up a lot of skills and knowledge on the job. I’ve also found that people are very understanding towards someone who might just be starting out and is inexperienced. Personally, my first manager took the time to ease me into the role, mentor me and support any training and upskilling which would better equip me to perform my role.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

Can you tell us about Accenture's work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

ACCENTURE

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in?

At Accenture, we pride ourselves on developing our people because we recognise that people are our single greatest asset. In that regard we invest a lot into training and allowing you to upskill and develop in areas of your interest. So far, I’ve really appreciated how open and accommodating everyone is. Despite being a large company, everyone has been very friendly and very accessible, regardless of whether you work with them or are even in the same division and people are very happy to chat or catch up for coffee. On top of that there are a lot of people looking after you and to ensure transitioning to Accenture isn’t overwhelming.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Accenture? Or the field you're involved in?

Know your strengths and what you bring to the company but be flexible and open to new experiences. Especially in technology, as a dynamic industry where things change rapidly, I’ve found this has made my journey much smoother and more interesting. With Accenture being such a large company it’s easy to get lost and not know where you belong or what you bring to the company but as long as you are open to trying roles that you might not have initially aligned yourself to or acquiring new skills, Accenture provides plenty of support and resources. You never know, you might end up discovering something you really enjoy but had never heard about or thought you wouldn’t like.

It’s a bit of a love hate relationship, but I mostly enjoy how versatile my role is and that I’m not bound by my title. When I first started, I panicked at being labelled a software engineer as someone who has no technical background. Luckily, to date I’ve not had to code and have been encouraged to play to my strengths, undertaking business analyst roles. It’s important to be flexible. I’ve been enabled to undertake training in configuration and implementing systems without needing strong technical skills. Whilst it keeps things interesting in the sense I never know what my next role will entail it also means constantly training and upskilling to ensure I can fulfil my role.

Interview with:

QUAN ZHOU

Can you tell us about Bain & Co.'s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? Bainies are deeply invested in helping our clients through every step of the journey towards achieving results and impact. Emphasis is placed on building genuine supportive relationships with the clients you work with. A strong focus on formal and informal mentorship really helps me feel supported as I challenge myself through work. The culture is very vibrant with everyone entirely comfortable being themselves at the office, which has led to me meeting some life-long friends through work!

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I stumbled across case competitions at university and it was an eye-opening experience to be able to solve problems in such a multi-disciplinary way. I was really excited by the prospect of being able to solve complex business problems in innovative ways as a career. I think the critical thinking and communication skills I developed throughout my Commerce/Law degree are integral to my everyday work.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? As an Associate Consultant I have had a variety of different responsibilities on my cases, from building complex analytical models to creating workshops and engaging with clients. You are supported from the day you start, with 2 weeks of intensive on-boarding and training, 2 weeks of global training, as well as local training throughout the year. Since joining Bain at the start of 2019, I’ve had the opportunity to work on strategy for a leading agribusiness company, a published article on the future of healthcare, and a commercial due diligence case in our Private Equity practice amongst other cases and proposals. Outside of case work, I’m involved in Women @ Bain, Bain Social Impact and Recruiting!

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Bain & Co? Or the field you're involved in? It’s important to be very clear on why you are interested in working in management consulting and specifically why you are interested in Bain. Reflect on how your past experiences demonstrate the value you could bring to your role. Be structured and thoughtful during your case interviews, but also don’t forget to bring your own personality and flair.

At the end of the day, Bain is a business centred on people. Whilst learning new analytical techniques and ‘cracking the case’ is very exciting, I find the most interesting, challenging and rewarding part of my work is communicating my insights to those around me. Effective communication is the difference between a strategy that is implemented and one that stays unread as a document on a shelf. From explaining your analysis to managers and partners, to convincing a client to change their entrenched processes, it’s a fresh and interesting challenge every day!

Consumer Goods and Retail The Consumer Goods and Retail Industry is one of the largest sectors in the world as it is heavily centred around companies who make and sell goods that are intended for direct use by consumers in their day-to-day activity. In such a broad and fast-paced market, there are a diverse variety of career opportunities for individuals embedded from the supply chain of creating the product all the way to the end result of marketing and selling to the consumer. It is an industry that is well attributed for people who enjoy working collaboratively in a team, have excellent organisational skills and have great analytical skills that extend into market research and consumer behaviour. Fast-moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies focus on selling large bulks of products to consumers usually at relatively low-cost. This often encompasses non-durable household goods such as beverages, toiletries or packaged goods and other consumables. Hence, FMCG businesses will often heavily invest in marketing, advertising and brand differentiation to establish brand awareness and consumer loyalty. In particular, students who have experience in marketing and management are highly sought after for leadership and management roles, or provide support services in the retail sector. As a result, huge companies with considerable market share in the FMCG sector will often actively seek motivated individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit to fit within the company’s various service lines. Receiving a placement as a graduate or vacationer within the FMCG sector will most likely see you having a product-centric role where you will be involved in improving aspects of a product in areas including sustainability, marketing or strategy.

Interview with:

ALANA PASQUALE

Territory Sales Manager Can you tell us about Nestlé's work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

As a Territory Sales Manager for Nestlé Professional I’m responsible for building and maintaining relationships with diverse customers across Western Sydney and Regional West NSW. My focus is on selling products within the culinary and beverage portfolio of Nestlé Professional across different channels including healthcare, restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs, bakeries, universities, schools and hotel groups. Every day is different, but I’m on the road for the majority of the week speaking with lots of different people, connecting with chefs and cooks, and finding ways to improve their business with our products and services.

One thing that sets Nestlé apart is the progressive culture and environment. A memorable experience was on International Women’s Day, where Nestlé demonstrated the importance of diversity and inclusion with celebrations and visits from notable guest speakers. Nestlé also encourages a flexible working environment for employees, and the change to activity-based working last year has fostered a workspace that breathes this culture. Another standout is the company’s investment in training and development with an array of development courses available for staff to upskill themselves both within and outside their position. I believe this shows the company values their employees.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? With a recruitment background, I had a taste of a fast-paced sales environment and knew that I wanted to work in a similar role where I could help diverse clients every day, and work within a team to reach mutual goals. Luckily the first year in the graduate program is a year in Field Sales, where I got to experience exactly this. I also worked in Hospitality for several years, which helped with making my way around kitchens and being able to communicate with chefs and cooks about products and cooking methods.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Nestlé? Or the field you're involved in?

NESTLÉ

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in?

Take time to figure out which areas you enjoy working in at the moment when selecting your Graduate Stream. If you want to pursue Sales, don’t worry if you have no corporate sales experience because your skills are easily transferrable - whether this is working in a team on group assignments or in a part-time customer-facing hospitality or retail job. Being able to work alone and in part of a team is integral, and the ability to communicate with people from all backgrounds is a must. If you love a challenge, it’s a very exciting environment and rewarding environment to work in.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

The role of a Territory Manager has definitely put me outside my comfort zone, and relies a lot on my own self-belief and confidence. The work is very diverse, as some days I may have to demonstrate how to make a Nestlé product in a chef’s kitchen or present information to clients on how to grow their business. At first I found the face-to-face sales element a little intimidating, as you come across different personalities every day. However, I’ve learnt to embrace the discomfort, believe in my own ability and always ask for help because everyone has been in your shoes once, and when you reach those goals it’s extremely rewarding.

Interview with:

NICHOLAS BRADBURY What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? I'm a National Account Executive working on our Woolworths business specialising in the Home Care Category. P&G people are owners, so the primary duty of a National Account Executive is to own the growth-delivery of the customer/category combination you're working on - for both P&G and the retailer. We achieve this through building strong partnership with retail partners, in doing so, ensuring our products are on-shelf and available for consumers. We also manage a promotional program and trade-spend budget to ensure products are effectively promoted to encourage consumers to trial and re-use our brands. We manage the logistics of new product launches with our retailers to ensure our innovation is exciting and appealing for consumers, as well as reporting back on business performance - it's a very rewarding role.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I got started in FMCG through my father - he spent 38 years in the industry and it was something I found interesting and wanted to pursue when I finished my studies. At University, I studied psychology which ignited a love for understanding and working with people, so I feel my work and study integrate. Despite not having a commercial-based degree, P&G are more interested in who you are, vs. what you studied - as knowledge and skills can be built.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

Can you tell us about P&G’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? P&G is a great place to work. I'd describe the culture as “work hard, play hard, and very collaborative - P&G is not an organisation with functional silos. In my perspective, P&G is set apart by the ownership and trust we put into each employee from Day One. We enable people by allowing them to jump in and solve real business problems, then intentionally celebrating the wins. Also, the drive, willingness to help, and collaboration of P&G people set the organisation apart from others within the industry.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for P&G? Or the field you're involved in?

PROCTER & GAMBLE

When applying to P&G, my advice is to be yourself and do your research - as I mentioned, P&G is interested in people, and while your academic results and background are important, P&G acknowledges there are equally important traits not visible on a University transcript. In terms of doing your research, interviews are as much about you working out if P&G is where you see yourself, as it is for P&G to assess if you're the right fit. To work in FMCG, my advice is to be relentlessly curious, smartly driven and creatively agile - day-to-day we don't realise the gravity of how fast the market is changing, these skills will help you stay ahead of the curve, and focus on the emerging areas. Also - have fun during the process! FMCG is an incredibly rewarding industry to enter, working with great brands, and strong retail partners in a fast-paced, every changing environment. While the application process seems daunting, the multitude of possibilities creates one of the most exciting times in your life.

I find the most interesting, and challenging, part of my work is solving the business problems which appear each day. Why? - Because it allows me to deeply analyse the problem, then work with, and leverage the expertise of, the very talented people within our organisation to create innovative ways of solving them. I also enjoy the pace of the industry, it truly is fast-moving, and requires agility.51

For 180 years P&G has been working to improve people’s lives in small but meaningful ways with our brands and products. We lead by shaping the future of our industry and we are recognized as one of the most innovative companies globally. Home to some of the most trusted brands like Gillette, Head & Shoulders, Olay, OralB and Pantene, serving 5 billion consumers across the world. Joining P&G means that right from Day 1 you'll have real responsibility and start adding value to our business straight away. We believe nothing beats hand-on experience when it comes to nurturing great leaders. Most of our people started with us right out of university and they've built a rewarding career across a variety of roles. This build-from-within philosophy means we're focused on fostering a culture of coaching and learning to enable your longterm development. We bring out the best in each other when every talent brings their unique self to work and every voice is heard. In Australia alone, we have 30 nationalities working under one roof. Being a force for good, we use our voice to spark conversations in society that can motivate change through both our brands and our people. We make a positive impact in addressing gender bias and leverage innovation to drive sustainability efforts. Do something that matters with P&G!

The accounting professional services industry is comprised of many key players most notably seen in the Big 4 Accounting firms (EY, PwC, KPMG and Deloitte), mid-tiers (such as Shinewing) as well as boutique accounting firms. Interview with: What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? As a Business Services professional, my day-to-day activities can include preparing financial statements, completing tax returns, completing business activity statements; all the while building meaningful relationships with clients by helping them achieve their business objectives.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? The most interesting/challenging part of my job is working on clients from a range of different industries. This means that I am always learning and get to experience a range of business issues. This experience has provided me a strong base of knowledge to continually build on throughout my future career.

Assistant Accountant Business Services Can you tell us about BDO’S work culture and environment? What sets it apart? BDO has a fun and inviting culture. As soon as I stepped foot in the office I felt very welcomed and this has not wavered since joining. As a mid-tier firm, BDO has really helped me get through the stressful periods of university as they take on a more intimate and involved approach in supporting and developing their people. Do you have any advice for someone applying for BDO? Or the field you're involved in?

BDO

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? During my final year of high school, the careers team emailed us about cadetships (where you combine work and study) for an accounting firm. Given that I enjoyed working with numbers, I searched online for cadetships and came across BDO. As I progressed through my degree, I have found that what I learn at university, I have already learned at workwhich has been really helpful!

EMILY BAITA

One piece of advice I’d give to students applying at BDO is not to be daunted by the application process. Although the recruitment process may seem somewhat demanding and competitive on the outset, by the time you get to the assessment centre, it is nowhere near as scary as expected. At the assessment centre, you will find that the whole BDO team is very friendly and welcoming. The team creates an environment that helps you relax and be the best you can be.

Solicitor, UNSW Alumni B.Comm B.Law What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? I work in the Corporate practice group, specialising in M&A. The team works on both private and public takeovers and advises clients on general corporate law matters. Depending on the stage of a transaction, I will be responsible for: - Assisting the client in its due diligence into the business being acquired, working with HSF’s specialist teams to understand specificaspects of the relevant business (eg IP,employment, finance); - Drafting and negotiating transaction documentation; and - Managing the completion process once atransaction has been signed, which involves monitoring and progressing the status of various pre-conditions to the transaction completing.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? HSF’s clerkship and graduate programs offer the opportunity to gain experience working in different teams within the firm. As a clerk, paralegal and graduate, I gained experience working in Disputes, Private Equity, Equity Capital Markets, Corporate (Funds M&A), Asset Finance and Corporate (M&A) before ultimately deciding to settle in Corporate (M&A). I primarily draw on my studies of corporations and contract law, but also find that my understanding of areas such as property, trusts and competition law from university also comes in handy when working with specialist teams on various different legal areas affecting a company.

Can you tell us about HSF's work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

One thing I value about HSF is that people are always happy to help you out with a problem or question. HSF has a diverse team with different perspectives and specialist knowledge, making it easy to find an answer to a tricky question or develop a solution to a problem faced by a client. Interview with:

SOPHIE GE

Consulting Human Capital Organisation Transformation Graduate What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in?

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Deloitte? Or the field you're involved in? I think it’s very important to pinpoint exactly it is about Deloitte and the role you’re applying for that interests you. In order to have that understanding, it’s important to talk to people who have worked in the company and the field. What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? The ambiguity and variety. I think there is a certain excitement that comes with changing expectations and uncertainty.

As a graduate in Human Capital Consulting, this varies depending on what project I’m on. We have a broad range of leadership, diversity and inclusion, change management, culture, learning and HR operating model design to name a few. Currently, I’m working on a Leadership Program for an Executive Leadership team. My day-to-day responsibilities include analysing interview and survey results, designing the collateral for the lab (e.g. slides, posters, workbooks) or finding content we can leverage such as journal articles, videos and learning materials.

DELOITTE

Can you tell us about your work culture and environment? What sets it apart? The culture of Deloitte is very supportive, friendly and collaborative. I think what sets Deloitte apart is that everyone is incredibly thoughtful, open-minded and understanding. From Day 1, I have always been encouraged to express a point of view and my contributions have always been valued, which is something that is very important to me.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I applied for the Human Capital Consulting vacationer program because I’ve always had an interest in people strategy and the future of work. I studied finance in University which on the surface, may not seem particularly relevant to my current role, but I definitely didn’t feel like this was a limitation. Deloitte really values diversity of thought and backgrounds, and much of our learning is done on the job.

Technology

Technology in business is a growing necessity. As the years go by, the business world is leaning more and more toward it, making it almost impossible to separate the two from each other. Google, Microsoft and Checkbox are some of the companies at the forefront of many dynamic changes in the technology industry. These companies have been changing how they have been delivering their offerings, often leveraging increased data gathering to create actionable insights through data analytics. MINWOO Can you tell us about Checkbox’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

Customer Success Manager

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your Checkbox as a company is pretty young (only 4 years old!) but has a nice bell curve spread across employee work? ages (from 18-56), which leads to a pretty youthful

A challenging aspect of my day-to-day is managing all the

and all hours of the day, lunch at the park etc.), balanced with a sharp focus on hands-on development and growth. The evolving nature of being in a startup means that we focus on developing skills that help us "evolve" and fit the needs of the business as it scales. For example, when I started, I was focusing on developing my client-facing skills by educating our customers about our product - now that Checkbox has grown, I'm more focused on large scale delivery projects and thinking through sustainable technology innovation in enterprise organisations. Who knows what role I'll play in Checkbox's future? The beauty of working in a scaling startup is that what is required at every stage of the business' evolution is ity. One thing is for sure - it only gets better and more rewarding with time!

involved in. When I started out at Checkbox, it was fairly straightforward because I was liaising with one contact at a fairly small organisation - but I'm now working with multiple ments, which can be taxing to manage. Having said that, the nature of the work really does stretch you to become better

CHECKBOX

The most interesting part of my work is that every project is solve, the solution that we design, varies quite a bit depending on which customer we're working with. Nothing really stays the same; you can guarantee there will always be change!

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university?

In my penultimate year, I realised I wanted to take my future career seriously, but, with zero industry experience, I felt I needed to start with something small to leverage myself into a "bigger" career opportunity. At the time, I had been working with Checkbox's CEO (Evan Wong) through his other startup in the education space As a CSM, my role involves helping customers realise (Hero Education). So, when I shared that I was looking to the value of our technology, a drag-and-drop automawork in the tech space, he let me know that his tech startup, tion platform, by means of teaching and supporting Checkbox, was looking for interns - a perfect match! customers to build out their own software, or to As you can probably tell from reading this, that small opporfacilitate the delivery of software from ideation to tunity leveraged itself and I'm now proudly full time at everyday use! Checkbox! It's an incredibly dynamic role that has me working In terms of my studies, I think they largely set a good with customers across various organisations across foundation when it came to understanding the basics of working in the B2B tech space. However, and you'll probably cations, legal, data, financial services and insurance. hear this a lot, what you learn in uni is really only meant to be a starting point for your knowledge - your growth is Do you have any advice for someone applying for Checkbox? Or specifically the expedited when you get onto the field and begin to apply the fundamentals that you learnt in the classroom.

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in?

field you're involved in?

Business and tech are seemingly at odds, where one can be quite abstract, and the other quite detailed. My advice to someone looking to work in the tech space is to be conscious of these two sides, know which one you can easily lean into, and which one you need to spend time and energy developing. One way to assist in this developing to use a pretty broad, but helpful framework called "Keep, Problem, Try" or KPT, which we're currently using at Checkbox. It is a retrospective tool used to evaluate the behaviours and principles that we should "keep", or "try" to adopt, to eliminate "problems". My advice is to apply this framework to your uni-studies and work experience (whether tech or non-tech related), so that you can begin to build a portfolio of lessons and principles which you can apply to your future career - it's particularly helpful for our context, as a tech startup, because we're always figuring out new ways of doing things so we want to keep a running record of all the lessons that we've learnt along the way! In line with this iterative-learning approach, we're constantly looking for people who are problem solvers, are keen to dive into the details, and who learn from past experiences. The beauty of working in a dynamic environment is that new challenges and obstacles appear (literally) every day. These challenges not only need to be overcome with thoughtful design, but with strong execution - it's like preparing a meal: you can read the recipe all day, but at some point, you have to start cooking!

Finance and Banking A career in finance opens up a whole new avenue of work that is dynamic and fast-paced however it rewards the individual with a development in challenging yet niche skills. The roles within this industry requires strong numerical and analytical skills which are needed to thrive in an environment where time management and multitasking become the bread and butter of the trade. These finance roles are often client-facing so strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must in order to excel within the pressure-intense situations you and your team deal with.

Investment Banking Division

Within Corporate Finance, Investment banking stands out as one of the most competitive fields. In making complex financial and strategic deals, there are a lot of important stakeholders to account for and a lot of decisions to make regarding the interests of your client. As an intern or a graduate, you can be assigned to an industry/ sector team. Industry sectors include: Consumer, Financial Institutions, Healthcare, Industrials, Media & Telecommunication, Natural Resources, Real Estate, Gaming and Technology. IBD is typically split into three areas: Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A): The M&A division presides over companies that are intent on acquiring/merging with another public or private company. Generally speaking, in an acquisition, a larger company obtains the majority stake in another company while a ‘Merger’ takes place when two firms join together to produce a single new firm. Equity Capital Markets (ECM): When a company wishes to raise additional capital to expand their business, the ECM division is able to discuss recommendations or organise and structure the offer process. They will also be able to provide marketing awareness for an equity-issuing campaign such as in the form of Initial Public Offerings. Debt Capital Markets: Similar to the ECM team, DCM market analysts provide advice and raise various types of debt for institutional clients and governments.

Interview with:

ADAM MCRAE Analyst

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? In investment banking we work with companies to help them raise money, merge or acquire other companies or provide other financial advisory services. As an analyst I get to help by creating company presentations, drafting documents for disclosure on the ASX, building financial and valuation models, analysing industry or market research and attending meetings with the company or other advisers. Even though I am still early on in my banking career, I find that I am given complete responsibility to drive client deliverables on behalf of the firm.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university?

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

Citi’s culture really surprised and impressed me. Investment banking can often carry negative stereotypes, but since starting at Citi as an intern I have found everyone to be welcoming, friendly and helpful. I have also been blown away by the amount of exposure I have received early on. For example, on my second day I met the CEO of one of Australia’s most high-profile companies, or when I was an intern I was able to attend meetings with some of Citi’s most prestigious clients. I now also find myself regularly presenting my work to senior executives at client meetings. Citi has continued to provide me with an endless number of learning opportunities, which has contributed to my experience here being so engaging and exciting.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Nestlé? Or the field you're involved in? One of my favourite quotes is “how you do anything is how you do everything”. Early in your career I think you need to make the decision to leverage every opportunity presented to you and make the most of it. Regardless of what the experience is, you have the potential to learn something new which can improve your application. Investment banking is ultimately a people business, so being able to bring a broad range of perspectives, skills and experiences to work helps you connect with colleagues and clients to make a real impact.

CITI

Prior to and during uni I competed as a state rower, so when moving into the corporate world I was looking for something with a similar elite team-based environment. Growing up in Queensland there is not a major finance culture so my interest only sparked after attending a careers fair in NSW. To me the most compelling part of investment banking is the intensity and camaraderie and the collective teamwork. So learning how to work as part of a high performing team – whether in sports or studies – has been incredibly beneficial and helpful.

Can you tell us about Citi’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

Working through urgent client requests. Given the nature of our work, clients tend to call on us with business critical issues requiring urgent attention. For example they may have received a takeover offer, may be facing some form of activism impacting their share price or may just require urgent advice on a live deal. Although time pressure is always a challenge, being able to work through these matters with the client is highly stimulating, motivating and rewarding. Investment banking gives you direct access to senior executives very early on, which really is like nothing else! It is an amazing training ground for the rest of your career regardless of the direction you go in.

Interview with:

QUYNH PHAM

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? As an AMP Capital Real Estate Graduate, I rotate around the Real Estate division which span the core functions of Property, Investment and Funds Management. Thus, my responsibilities vary widely, depending on the team I am in. One month I may be assisting with a state-wide legal transition project for our Office and Logistics assets and another I will be onsite at Marrickville Metro to oversee the daily operations of running a shopping centre! My role as a graduate is to learn all about real estate asset management by absorbing as much as I can from every team I’m in and ultimately kickstart my career in Property!

Can you tell us about AMP’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? AMP’s flexible work environment with a flat, non-hierarchical structure is what sets it apart. Everyone is respectful of your time and commitments outside of work and extremely supportive of a healthy work-life balance, so you won’t ever feel like you’re being micro-managed (as long as you complete your work of course!). Everyone is very friendly and approachable and willing to give you time out of their day for a coffee and chat, if you simply reach out. The graduate program also equips you with a solid support network of people that can guide and advocate for you along the way. Do you have any advice for someone applying for AMP? Or specifically the field you're involved in? The Property industry has recently become Australia’s biggest employer. It is an extremely social industry, and employable staff are ones who are not afraid to network not only internally but also externally. When applying to AMP, just bring yourself, a can-do attitude and an open mind! This will help you make the most out of each rotation and encourage you to try something new. Specifically, for Real Estate, you should have a keen interest in property and clearly discern this in your application. Even if you don’t have experience in the sector, your passion for the industry will speak volumes!

AMP

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? Although I did not major in Real Estate studies, I have always been interested in the property industry. In my penultimate year, I completed a 3-month summer internship at a Property company which gave me a taste of the industry and I instantly knew it was for me. Everyone is super down-to-earth and social, and I particularly like real estate assets because they are tangible and withstand the test of time. My experience doing case competitions also helped during the selection process when I was faced with a similar component in the assessment centre.

Real Estate Graduate, AMPC

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? The best and most challenging part is the rotational nature of the grad program. I love that I’m able to work in many different teams, meet different people and more interestingly, learn how teams interact to ultimately drive return for investors. However, this also means that I regularly change teams. This can be difficult especially when you start to build rapport with the people in your team and want to continue to see a project through end-to-end. Ultimately though this experience teaches you how to prioritise, value your time and experiences. 83

Interview with:

Quantitative Trader

What do you do? What duties, functions, and responsibilities are you involved in? As a Quantitative Trader, my role focuses on the end-to-end trading process, which starts with research and extends all the way to trade execution. Every strategy starts with a hypothesis that is generated based on sources such as experience, market microstructure or market anomalies, to name a few. A Trader needs to review terabytes of historical data retrieved from our in-house database that currently houses decades’ worth of information. We then conduct quantitative analysis using statistics, machine learning and various other techniques to verify the hypothesis. One check is never enough! To further test the hypothesis, we need to conduct a simulation and ensure that there are no false positive signals. Once the hypothesis is substantiated, we put the strategy into production to further optimize on latency with efficient algorithms that we code ourselves. Constant monitoring of our strategies and their performance in the market is a key responsibility of a Trader. This feedback is used to further refine the strategy while also developing new hypotheses. Less than 10% of hypotheses are moved into production and hence creativity and constant idea generation is what sets a successful trader apart from a good trader.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I graduated from Australian National University with a Bachelors in Actuarial Science. I was instantly attracted to trading due to its result-oriented environment where I could see my actions directly become results. A non-hierarchal and competitive environment is what attracted me most to Flow as I constantly wanted to better my skills and stay ahead of the competition. Basic concepts learnt in Mathematics, Statistics, Probability and Coding definitely helped me develop further within this role. Furthermore, the in-house training program at Flow is uniquely designed to bring out your strongest qualities and help you succeed as a Trader.

Can you tell us about Flow Traders’ work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

FLOW TRADERS

XUN CHUN TEE

At Flow, we foster a unique ”one team” culture that has provided us with a competitive advantage. Knowledge sharing and constant encouragement of idea generation is at the heart of our trading floor. All traders work in teams and this helps us develop ideas and strategies that eventually generate profits! It also helps facilitate positive conversations between traders that encourage us to look at ideas from different perspectives. The speed at which we work is definitely fast paced and ideas can be put into production within hours!

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Flow Traders? Or the field you're involved in?

The key is to understand Flow Traders’ core business and the role of a Graduate Trader within such a firm. Motivation and passion is essential for any trader and we like to see this through the recruitment process in various areas such as the field of study you undertook, what extracurricular activities you took on and even self-initiated projects that you may have taken on in your own time. Practice is key for the math test and finding different sources or even making your own math test to randomly spit out numbers will help prepare you for this test. Everyone can ace it if they practice! Take time to understand the proprietary trading industry. Ask yourself what you would like to get out of a long-term career and see if Flow can provide you with the right platform to achieve your goals.

What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work?

As previously mentioned, less than 10% of hypotheses actually go into production and hence creativity and constant idea generation are key requirements in my day-to-day job. This constantly keeps me on my toes and encourages me to improve every day. Constant failure can be demotivating, but in this case I see failure as an opportunity to learn!
