Mission & Goals MISSION Our mission at the University of Maryland School of Social Work is to develop practitioners, leaders and scholars to advance the well-being of populations and communities and to promote social justice. As national leaders, we create and use knowledge for education, service innovation, and policy development.

dual degree and certificate programs

PLANS OF STUDY

WORLD-CLASS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS The majority of students complete the 60-credit MSW program in two years, which is comprised of a foundation and advanced year.

1-year advanced standing program Students who have earned a BSW degree within the last five years may be eligible for the 36-credit advanced standing program. Accepted students can complete the MSW degree in three semesters.

DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS The School of Social Work offers five dual-degree program opportunities in partnership with other top-ranked UMB Schools and regional Maryland Universities:

UMSSW’s CSWE accredited 60-credit master’s degree is divided into 24 foundation and 36 advanced credits where students can choose from a rich curriculum of advanced courses.

u MSW/MBA, Master of Social Work and Master

Students who need a part-time option must complete the program within four-years.

FOUNDATION (First-year field placement) 480 hours Two 8-hour days per week (Mondays and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays) ADVANCED (Second-year field placement) 720 hours Three 8-hour days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) Students are not encouraged to work full-time while enrolled full-time in the MSW program.

In the advanced year, students choose between the Clinical and Macro concentrations. Students may use elective credits to take courses in both concentrations. In addition, students select a specialization or field of practice in the Advanced Curriculum.

Students are selected for field-based stipends focused on Baltimore community outreach. Award Range: $2,000 to $5,000

UMB Scholarship Opportunities UMB offers a number of scholarships to students who demonstrate a strong ability to succeed through their academic achievements, community leadership, and service. Award Range: $2,000 to $7,000

BHWISE Fellows Advanced year students interested in providing behavioral health services to individuals across the lifespan. Award: $10,000 in advanced year

CAMPUS HOUSING

BALTIMORE Baltimore is a city of more than 265 neighborhoods with unique cultural festivals and traditions. Eateries, museums, theaters, sporting events, and other community activities make living in the Baltimore region an unforgettable experience. Applicants can select both concentrations and any of the five specializations at the Baltimore location.

Convenient housing is available in Baltimore at Fayette Square and Pascault Row apartments. Featuring the best amenities of apartment living, students can forget long commutes and arrive to class with ease. *USG does not have student housing, but many options are available in close proximity to the campus.

SHUTTLE SERVICE AND PARKING UM Shuttle provides the University community with a variety of fare-free bus routes that travel to neighborhoods such as Federal Hill, Mount Vernon, Canton/Fells Point, and the BioPark. Student parking is available at both campus locations.

Students at both locations have ample opportunity to travel to D.C., Philadelphia, and New York. Our outstanding faculty teach courses at both locations. Student field placements are within 45 minutes of their home address and are available in Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, and Southern Pennsylvania. Admission criteria and deadlines are the same for students applying to take classes at the location that best accommodates their academic interests, career goals, and life outside of School.

THE UNIVERSITIES AT SHADY GROVE (USG) Students who intend to specialize in Clinical Behavioral Health may apply for admission to the MSW program at the USG location. Students may take advantage of leadership opportunities, social events, volunteer service, and can also attend events at the Baltimore location.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MSW PROGRAM u A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university u A minimum of 60-credit hours in the liberal arts u Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is preferred u GRE or MAT score is required if overall GPA is 2.5 or below (GRE or MAT scores are strongly encouraged for applicants whose GPA is between 2.51 and 2.99)

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ADVANCED STANDING MSW PROGRAM u Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and on the last 60 credits u Bachelor of Social Work degree from CSWE accredited program in the last 5 years u Support from field supervisor and Chair of BSW program for Advanced Standing u Earned ‘B’ or better in all methods/practice courses

HOW TO APPLY There are two components of the application: 1. Application Submission—Submit a complete application

(transcripts, references, and any other special circumstances) no later than the deadline. u S tudents may apply for spring or fall admission (Advanced Standing Shady Grove is spring ONLY) Advanced Standing (AS) applicants must also submit a Case Plan. One of the 3 professional references for AS applicants must be a field supervisor. The Social Work Department Chair must complete a form. Transfer applicants must also submit a transfer statement. One of the 3 professional references must address academic standing. *Fee waivers are available for members or alumni of the following: Americorps (Vista, Teach for America, etc.), Peace Corps, TRIO (McNair and SSS only), and Military/Veterans. To officially request a fee waiver, all documentation must be submitted at least 5 days prior to the application deadline.
