RIP CITY TONIGHT'S QUOTE: “I don't think I'm loyal to a fault. I think I'm loyal to the person that I am. When I'm saying that this is what I want to do, I want to make this team win a championship and I want this city to feel what it's like winning the championship after such a long time.” —DAMIAN LILLARD ON STAYING IN PORTLAND

WILLEN SIN MANAGER OF GAME OPERATIONS & EVENTS DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AND WHAT YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES ARE WITH THE TRAIL BLAZERS ▶ I have game operations and events in my job title, so there’s two sides of the role. The game operations side is managing the flow, logistics and execution of the run of show for each given game night. This includes organizing pregame festivities, on-court experiences, time-out promotions, anthem singers, halftime performers and a variety of other in-game elements. On the events side, I’m responsible for coordinating and executing any major marketing events, such as our Rip City 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament that we host on campus every summer, in addition to the Rip City Rally which is our season kick-off tour around the state. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF YOUR JOB? ▶ My most memorable, yet truly terrifying, moment was being able to orchestrate the surprise for Todd Bosma’s (aka my boss) 20th anniversary celebration on the court. Those who have worked with Todd are aware of his understanding of the game script: Nothing gets past him. So, to implement and execute a surprise behind his back was difficult.

28

Thankfully, the surprise went perfectly. The moment he was able to share with his family and all of Rip City at center court was easily one of the highlights of my career. WHICH TRAIL BLAZERS/ROSE QUARTER EVENT IS YOUR FAVORITE TO WORK ON, AND WHY? ▶ Is this a trick question? Can’t go wrong with any Trail Blazers games! Every game is a new show and event. You never know what to expect and coming out victorious makes it that much sweeter.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • EMPLOYEE FEATURE

Although I will say one of the more exciting events I look forward to every year is our Rip City Rally tour. For the past seven years, we pick five cities to visit outside of Portland to kick off the season. It is an amazing opportunity for our ambassadors and staff to engage with fans that can’t come to our games as often. Overall, it is a great group of people, hosting a great event, having a great time with Rip City. IF YOU WEREN’T IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? ▶ Who knows! Probably frantically trying to learn how to animate so I could go work for Pixar or something. My dream job is to be a motivational speaker, so I might have ventured down that path. Though I am not sure what that entails.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE ASPIRING TO BE IN YOUR POSITION? ▶ Don’t be one dimensional. Game operations isn’t a specific skill set you learn or master, it encompasses a little bit of everything from communications to crisis management to event operations. I’d also add the sooner you realize that nothing will ever be perfect, the more fun you’ll have. So being able to be adaptable is key. The world of entertainment is always evolving, so the quicker you can pivot, the more ahead of the game you’ll be. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HAPPY HOUR SPOT IN PORTLAND? ▶ A friend’s house. WHAT TV SHOW ARE YOU CURRENTLY BINGE-WATCHING? ▶ Not a big TV show fan – more about the movies. I got Disney+ recently so I’m reliving my childhood. ripcity est. 1970

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • STUNTER FEATURE

JOJO YEARS AS A STUNTER: ROOKIE

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO STUNT?

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

Stunting has become an entertaining way to both stay physically fit and also push me to improve. Also, it helps having inspirational teammates, coaches and fans.

I really, really, really enjoy learning. Any chance I get I am reading, listening to podcasts or audiobooks or I am out and about in search of new experiences. I also enjoy music and may be spotted at local concerts from time to time.

WHAT ARE SOME LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW? My love of self-improvement has put me on the path of becoming a high school math teacher and wrestling coach. Wrestling was my first love before stunting. I believe education and athletics are the best way to grow mentally and physically. I am also an avid reader and closet nerd. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS A STUNT TEAM MEMBER? My favorite memory from being on the stunt team so far was starting a funny chant I made up at tryouts after dropping my final stunt. It was disheartening to not perform the way I had planned but getting back up and getting the judges involved with a chant was pretty comical. It might have saved my tryout.

32

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO ASPIRING YOUNG STUNTERS, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? With stunting, as well as everything else, keep things fun. No matter how serious you are about anything, as soon as it becomes all work and no play, you lose your passion. Don’t be afraid to try new things! Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and learn to laugh at yourself. A good attitude is the most important tool for improving at anything.

The Trail Blazers are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children and families who have been historically underserved, where they live (environmental sustainability), learn (education), and play (sport and physical activity). The Trail Blazers Foundation gives grants and scholarships to nonprofits, schools, and students and is funded through meaningful corporate partnerships and revenue from Trail Blazers license plate sales, 5050 raffle, retail programs, and other fundraising efforts. During the 2018-19 season, Trail Blazers Inc. and the Trail Blazers Foundation donated over 1 million dollars to support youth across Oregon and SW Washington.

The Trail Blazers believe our home court extends far beyond the arena and everything we do in our lives makes an impact, so we encourage fans to join us in our efforts to protect our planet and our community to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

Celebrating Five Decades of Extraordinary Employees “Growing up Trail Blazers” isn’t just a saying, it’s a lifestyle - that’s especially true for Trail Blazers Youth Basketball Coach, Matt Dietrich. Coach Matt is responsible for hosting camps and clinics for kids ages 6 to 18 throughout Oregon and Washington. “The first event I worked was the Shamrock Run. I’m sort of an entertainer. There were a ton of kids around - I found a group of ten kids who couldn’t shoot or dribble, and I gave them a little clinic right there.” Since then, Matt has taken on a variety of different coaching MATT DIETRICH roles including P.E takeovers and traveling the state on the Rip City Rally. He also hosts Rip City Academy coaching clinics for youth basketball coaches across the region. “I never thought I would coach basketball. I played at the University of Redlands, and got a degree in business. I became a project manager but ended up trading 200 emails a day for coaching 200 kids.” For Matt, this job has been the most rewarding. It’s given him an appreciation and understanding for how people learn in different ways. “They’ve taught me patience, and to come in with an open mind. You never know what someone is going through, and I’ve given them a way to escape that.” Matt has been creating extraordinary moments for these kids every day for the last three years. “I really feel that in basketball, kids are able to establish a healthy and active lifestyle where they can be in control of improvement and bettering themselves.” Join the Trail Blazers organization in saying thanks to Coach Matt as he continues to improve the lives of kids all across Rip City.
