Building Community One Book at a Time

Libraries are doing what politicians can’t

Arecent unattributed meme on social media reads, “I miss the old days when billionaires’ vanity projects were building public libraries, museums and music venues!” I owe Andrew Carnegie a debt of gratitude; I’m pretty sure if it hadn’t been for the Huron, South Dakota, Carnegie Public Library, I would have wound up in a juvenile corrections facility for matricide.

I jest — kind of — but I spent hours and hours there, especially every summer, reading. I even won the “read the most books” prize many summers in a row. My reading habit has served me well, and I’m so grateful I now live in a reading-oriented community.

The Pasadena City Library has a “One City, One Story” program (OCOS). For 21 years, the program has promoted an appreciation of reading and tolerance by recommending a book the entire community reads simultaneously. For its spring selection, the committee chose “Sparks Like Stars” by Nadia Hashimi and “LA Weather,” by María Amparo Escandón for summer.

As worn-out a phrase as it is, I could not put “LA Weather” down. It was fun, funny, and so twisty-turny that I almost got motion-sickness. The characters are so alive, distinct and unique. They were also maddening, and I wanted to scold every one of them at different points, yet I also loved all of them.

That’s when I knew I was in the hands of a deft author who led me into a relationship with the characters, warts and all. I see this as a television series with the Alvarado family becoming a beloved fixture of American life, as we are frustratingly short of Latinx-themed entertainment. If I were in charge of acquiring novels for development, I’d get Ms. Escandón on my schedule immediately.

She captures the ethnic, culinary and geographic spirit of LA so exquisitely, from eldest daughter Claudia Alvarado’s gorgeous home on the Malibu shore to the Chavez Ravine area of East LA. I adore Los Angeles and am proud to live here.

Ironically, as a Pasadena City Library selection, the city of Pasadena is only mentioned once. It reflects the OCOS selection committee’s eclectic taste. For example, the spring selection of Hashimi’s “Sparks Like Stars” is about Afghanistan and an orphan’s relocation to the United States.

The Alvarado family consists of the parents, Oscar and Keila, and their three daughters, Claudia, Olivia, and Patricia. In the next generation of offspring, there’s Daniel, a gender-fluid out-of-wedlock son, and two toddlers who — in the opening scene — are found drowned in the grandparents’ neglected pool.

After having been a perfect model of wedded bliss for decades, Oscar and Keila’s marriage is falling apart … then the girls’ marriages unravel. The OCOS books aim to have different perspectives on contemporary issues explored through fiction. “LA Weather” hits many of them in a highly entertaining family story.

LA Weather is a perfect title since it reflects the family patriarch Oscar Alvarado’s inexplicable obsession with the weather in California and globally. In short, he’s let his life fall apart, a metaphor tied to the Southern California drought. The book also weaves in the events that started on Nov. 8, 2016, which for me began an emotional weath-

er system I am just now recovering from. Without mentioning the Orange Menace’s name, the author reflected my despair perfectly.

Regarding the LA Public Library: while they chose to go with the NEA’s similar “Big Read” program, I discovered that the American Library Association has a template that librarians all over the U.S. can use, and 150 of them do. They call it “One Book, One Community.”

The current ALA “One Book” selection is so good that I was glued to it from start to finish. Grace Cho’s “Tastes Like War” memoir reads like a novel. It’s about her life as a Korean American whose mother was a “comfort” woman during the Korean War era.

Cho’s mother eventually became an American merchant marine’s bride, who then took her home to a little town in Washington State where — in many ways — she was treated like a sideshow. The author was an adult before she realized her mother had been forced into prostitution to eat, a fate for many Korean women.

I’d mistakenly thought that “comfort women” were sex slaves for the Japanese during their occupation of Korea, but I found out that American GIs were also using Korean women for “comfort.” I am often embarrassed to learn how clueless I am about our military’s engagement in behavior that impacts generations of people. The title, “Tastes Like War,” was the comment the author’s mother made when she tasted powdered milk.

It’s a compelling book worth reading. If you do, you’ll join people all over the U.S. to learn about an important story of the aftermath of the Korean War. I’m excited to have read both “LA Weather” and “Tastes Like War.” I’m a proud villager of the reading community. Thank you, libraries!

The Future of Pasadena Libraries

Tim McDonald shares vision as new department director

After a nationwide recruitment effort, City Manager Miguel Márquez has appointed Tim McDonald as Pasadena’s new director of the Department of Libraries and Information Services.

McDonald has worked with the city of Pasadena since 2016 and served as acting director since February 2022. He will now oversee the department’s 10 branch locations, which collectively circulate over 1.2 million library books, DVDs and other resources each year; he will also lead 99 full-time employees and direct an annual budget of about $16.5 million.

“Tim is ideally suited to serve as director

given his proven leadership skills and the universal respect he’s earned as acting director,” Márquez said. “Tim has a clear vision of public libraries as essential hubs of information and community activity, especially neighborhood libraries located within one mile of every Pasadena resident.”

McDonald said that he felt drawn to the position due to Pasadena’s tradition, innovation and values.

“The city really does walk the walk on diversity, inclusion and equity — and those are important values to me,” he explained. “Across the country, you’re seeing news stories about things like libraries really under siege in terms of what books are on their shelves. Sometimes it’s from outside the community, but sometimes it’s

from the elected officials. … The people in Pasadena want a diverse collection of materials and understand that it’s part of the democratic process to have all these diverse voices represented.”

For McDonald, libraries have played an important role throughout his life. He described them as valuable assets that have aided both his academic and personal growth since childhood.

“My mom was a librarian for a public school in New Jersey, so that was my first exposure to libraries,” he said. “Both my parents were educators. My dad was a teacher, and later a school administrator. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

During the pursuit of his undergraduate degree at Swarthmore, McDonald worked at the circulation desk of the college’s science library. He then went on to earn a master’s degree in teaching and learning from DePaul University and a master’s degree in information science from the University of North Texas. He also lived and worked in Chicago as a public schoolteacher.

“I ended up using libraries a lot for academic support, but it was also just a safe and welcoming space my whole life,” McDonald said. “During my first career as a schoolteacher, I realized that the librarian has the best job in the school because you get to know these kids over time. You don’t just have them for one year, but you get to … see them grow and develop and get to learn their interests and share literature and learning with them.”

Prior to moving to Pasadena, McDonald worked in the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, which won a National Medal for Museum and Library Service. His roles in Las Vegas included literacy manager, children’s department head and branch manager of the Sunrise Library, which has a service area population of 230,000 people.

McDonald said that some of the proudest moments of his career came from his time as a literacy manager offering programs for adults to achieve their GED credential, or high school equivalency diploma.

“We offered English as a second language and citizenship preparation classes

for immigrants that were entering the naturalization process, and that was a really rewarding part of my job,” he described. “I had classes running in 15 different sites across the city. To see people take a risk, come into these classes on the first day, who were so scared to start this journey, and then by the end of their course, the relationships that they built, the pride that they felt and the resources that the class gave them to move on to the next part of their journey is just really satisfying.

“We had seniors that spent their whole lives not knowing how to read. … To make that achievement at that time of their life is amazing. (We saw) people who had become U.S. citizens learning how to speak English. … To have a transformative effect on people’s lives, it was really great to be part of that.”

During a trip to Pasadena to visit a group of his friends, McDonald fell in love with the city. Later on, when his partner’s mother needed to move into assisted living, he decided that Pasadena was the right place to stay.

Bearing an admiration for the city’s public library system, McDonald’s vision for Pasadena’s future focuses strongly on the nearly 100-year-old Central Library, which was designed by famed architect Myron Hunt to be a learning center and cultural beacon for the community. The library is currently in the design phase of a retrofit and renovation project.

“If we can preserve this beautiful, iconic Central Library for its next hundred years, if we can really preserve its historic character and make thoughtful enhancements to meet the current and future needs of the community, that will be a terrific legacy,” McDonald said.

“Everyone I’ve met who has lived in Pasadena for any length of time has a story about the Central Library. They’ve gone there as kids, their grandparents took them, they went there after school as adults or they studied for college degrees. I met a couple that became engaged at the Central Library. There’s a lot of love for the library. … That’s what I’m really looking forward to over the next couple of years.”

McDonald expressed gratitude for the support of Mayor Victor Gordo and Assemblymember Chris Holden, who helped acquire state funding so that the library’s redesign comes at no cost to the community. The entire process will be fully funded by a grant from the California State Library.

McDonald estimated that it will take up to two years to complete the retrofit and renovation scheme along with construction plans for the Central Library. He said that the design phase should conclude by the summer of 2025 and that the construction phase will last another 32 to 36 months. This means that Pasadena’s Central Library should reopen in 2028.

“We are on track to meet those milestones, but it’s going to be a big focus of the library team’s work over the next couple of years, for sure,” McDonald said.

Alongside Pasadena Public Library’s 2,300 on-site programs, free Wi-Fi services and collection of printed books, eBooks, media and periodicals, McDonald wants to build on the resources that help community members succeed in school, earn degrees and advance their careers.

“We’re going to provide programming for all ages and all members of the community, so things that you might not expect to see in a library like support for small business or legal resources are things that you’ll see in Pasadena’s libraries,” he said.

“This summer, we’re offering a Lunch at

the Library program at Jefferson School to provide free meals to kids who may not be getting them otherwise like they would during the school year. … We want to be a trusted place where you could come in and get the services that you need to succeed in life.”

While providing resources that support the community, McDonald has said that he’s felt the love and support reciprocated from the community toward the city’s libraries.

“I am really grateful to the community for the support of the Library Services Continuation Measure that they approved last November, and that secures funding over the next 15 years, so the community can expect to receive outstanding library services,” he said.

“We’ve got a fantastic team, a really innovative, service-oriented staff and I just want to give kudos to the staff for being so tremendous and a big thank you to the community for their support of the library system.”

For McDonald, his hope for the future of his work in Pasadena goes back to his belief in the core of what a library should represent.

“Libraries are important for the community because they provide a place where anybody can go,” he said. “There’s a diversity of voices that are represented where we really represent everybody in the community, no matter what your age, your economic status, your housing status or where you were born. That’s something that’s really important to me.”

The Monument Expansion Pack

Legislators call for Biden to expand protected region on San Gabriel Mountains

Area leaders are calling upon President Joe Biden to expand the boundaries of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in an effort that would preserve almost 110,000 acres.

At a news conference on June 26, Mayor Victor Gordo, Sen. Alex Padilla, Congresswoman Judy Chu, Congressman Tony Cardenas, County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and Native American leaders gathered at a news conference to speak about why this expansion would be important for the San Gabriel Valley area.

“For Angelenos, the San Gabriel Mountains have been a lifelong connection to nature,” Padilla said. “For many low-income families in the Los Angeles area, this is the only access they have to green space and the educational and health benefits that come with it. And it is critical

that we protect these public lands to promote environmental justice in our communities.”

Padilla and Chu are urging Biden to issue the expansion through a proclamation under the Antiquities Act of 1906. The new acreage, if approved, would increase the national monument already designated by President Barack Obama in 2014 by 33%. The new acreage would bring the monument closer to communities in Altadena and Sierra Madre, increasing access to 15 million people who live within a 90-minute drive of the monument.

“I hope that President Biden will recognize the importance of these lands by designating the Western Angeles National Forest as part of the National Monument,” Chu said at the news conference. “Los Angeles is among the most park-poor regions of the country, despite the natural treasures right here in our backyard. Underserved communities without access to

green spaces miss out on the proven natural and physical health benefits associated with recreation and the outdoors.”

But the expansion would not just be about increasing access to green spaces, the letter sent to Biden by Padilla and Chu also highlights that these protections would also “protect clean drinking water supplies for Los Angeles County, as well as enhance conservation of the area’s rich cultural resources, unique geological features, critical wildlife habitat and threatened and endangered wildlife.”

Environmental advocates were quick to endorse this effort, agreeing that the San Gabriel Mountains are important to preserving biodiversity and agreed that it would protect water resources in the area.

Throughout the conference, while introducing the speakers, Gordo added a per-

sonal touch to the argument to enlarge the San Gabriel National Monument. He spoke about how his family would go to the mountains on weekends and how he would ride bikes with his friends on the mountain trails.

Barger, who represents Pasadena, Altadena and areas of the Angeles National Forest, added that she hopes the president will seriously consider their request.

“Every Los Angeles county resident in every neighborhood deserves safe and accessible nature, parks and open space,” she said. “Connecting with nature benefits our mental health and overall well-being. As local leaders, we must do everything possible to ensure our communities and visitors alike have equitable access to explore nature. It’s a stabilizing space that makes a big difference in many people’s lives.”

Salaries Can’t Keep Up

Low-income threshold increased to $70,650 in Los Angeles County

According to a new statewide study, a single person making $70,650 in Los Angeles County is now considered low income.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development released new income limits — parameters calculated annually using federal guidelines to determine eligibility for state assistance like affordable housing programs based on household income — in June. The study showed that the low income threshold increased in many of California’s 58 counties, including Los Angeles.

Unlike many other counties analyzed in the report, LA’s median household income remains below what is considered low income. For example, while $70,650 is classified as low income for a single-person household, the median income for a single-person household is only $68,750.

CDHCD attributed this upward trend to inflation and the high cost of living, with more than 50% of Angelenos now considered low-income.

On the lowest end of the report’s income classification, the “Acutely Low Income” category is singular to California after the state adopted AB 1043 in 2021. That bill was intended to increase housing and social welfare programs for the state’s most vulnerable and categorizes those bringing in 15% or less of the county’s median income as “Acutely Low Income,”

On the other end of the spectrum, the report’s “Moderate Income” category accounts for households earning up to 120% of the area median income. The remaining categories — low, very low and extremely low — are set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Figures do show that the median income for a four-person household in LA County

The study showed that the low income threshold increased in many of California’s 58 counties, including Los Angeles.

has risen from $80,000 in 2021 to $91,000 in 2022 and is now up to $98,200 in 2023. Surrounding Southern California counties reflected similar trends and many of the state’s median incomes have surpassed six figures.

Orange County’s median household income has climbed to $127,800 from $119,000 in 2022 to $106,700 in 2021. For a single-person household, $80,400 is

now considered low income in OC. These figures are dwarfed by Santa Clara County, whose median household brings in $181,300 annually — the highest rate in the state.

The impact of this new income limit in LA County will be used to determine eligibility for household income assistance and may change the income levels accepted at affordable housing facilities.

Bridging Communities

Regional Metro program brings in local contractors

The newly opened Metro regional connector in Downtown LA, uniting the Gold, Blue, Expo, Red and Purple lines, has been described by Metro officials as one of the most important transit developments in the city’s history. It’s a project that has not only stitched together LA’s light rail network, but has united several of the region’s local contractors to turn Metro’s dream into a reality.

For Pasadena-based KPA Constructors, playing a part in the $1.8 billion regional connector project was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Founded in 2017, the systems electrical contracting company had been working

“small jobs” on Metro projects until they were approached by Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), the prime contractor for the Regional Connector Transit Project, in 2019. RCC needed a radio communication system for the 1.9-mile light-rail addition, and KPA Constructors was awarded a $3.7 million contract.

“It was transformational,” said Karl Percell, president of KPA Constructors. “It was like, ‘OK, this is it. This is the shot. This is where we become who we’re trying to become … because we’ve been building for this.’”

Despite receiving the contract, Percell noticed that it required a payment and performance bond, which is used as an “insurance policy to verify that they’re going

to get the work that we said we were going to provide and that we could pay everyone we said we were going to pay.”

Percell and his team approached a bonding agent he was familiar with but that was not related to the regional connector project, and they began working together in January 2020.

“He was like, ‘You’re going to have to get a certain percentage of the contract amount,’” Percell recalled. “I think he said 10%, so $400,000, which we didn’t have.”

As time ticked away and the project commencement date loomed, Percell felt as though he was jumping through hurdles with each passing month trying to secure his contract.

“One day I called him and I’m just like, ‘They want us to start this project in May. We need to get this contract signed. … They want to start soon; we’ve got to get going.’ And then he was like, ‘OK, well you need to come up with 20% of the contract value.’ … That’ $800,000,” Percell said. “How do you just tell me that now?

Metro, the city of LA and the county of LA, CDABP has served over 2,720 contractors by providing free services like bonding assistance, contract financing, technical support, education and training, networking and matchmaking facilitation. Contractors can submit an enrollment form through the program’s website.

For KPA Constructors, CDABP allowed them to become a crucial player in the construction of Downtown’s regional connector. They were able to furnish and install the project’s radio communication system, which allows Metro and first responders to communicate with the outside world from inside the system’s underground stations and tunnels.

… And by that time, we had gone out to friends, family, (and said,) ‘Hey, this is our opportunity. This is our chance. Can you take a chance on us? Will you support us in this?’ And we were able to do that.”

Under pressure from the deadline and frustrated by his ongoing battle with the bonding agent, Percell looked for alternative forms of bonding assistance through LA Metro. His search led him to the LA Regional Contractor Development and Bonding Program (CDABP), which assists small and diverse firms in overcoming barriers to win government contracts.

“They were able to put some money in escrow for us and give us a collateral, so we got the $4 million payment performance bond,” Percell said. “At the time, I talked to the general contractor and they’re like, ‘No one else does this. No one else was able to do what you guys did.’ … We only did it with the assistance of this program for sure, which is why we’re trying to encourage more contractors to participate.”

A three-pronged effort that includes LA

“These Metro jobs, they are all complex undertakings,” Percell said. “We’re talking about utility relocation, new construction, restoration of existing construction and protection of existing construction. The light rail system itself is a complicated thing, so we knew going in that it was going to be a challenge. It was going to be rewarding, but it was going to be difficult and it was going to push us to our limits. And it did not disappoint in that aspect.”

Percell explained that he and his team faced the challenges with a willing spirit, as projects like the regional connector are what originally inspired him to become an engineer and co-found the company. He had moved to LA from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, when he was 17 years old to study civil engineering at USC, while his business partner, Kit Wong, was born in LA and attended Cal Poly Pomona.

“The reason that we started our company was we saw the opportunity that, ‘Hey, they’re about to build out light rail transportation throughout LA county,’” Percell explained. “We also saw the transformational effect that this was going to have on the LA area.”

As a USC student from 2005 to 2009, Percell related living on campus before the Expo line’s installment to living on an island. He felt stuck.

“How do you get around? Everything’s so far,” he said. “Public transportation unlocks an area to you. … My business part-

Percell recalled a moment when he was asked why he decided to become an engineer. He replied by saying that certain people are written into history for building great structures, and that he wants to be one of those people.

“I hope that we work towards the goal of building KPA to be that level, so we can be remembered and mentioned like, ‘KPA

helped build the Metro light rail system,’” he said. “That would be a dream, if we’re able to make it to that level through our hard work. … Our goal is to prove that we are capable of doing the work of being the systems electrical contractor of choice for our clients and the community.

“We want to work on projects that make our communities more connected, greener and better to live in overall for everyone who’s involved. … Our future is to keep looking for public projects that seem to be beneficial to the public at large.”

Drummer, Teacher, Co-Founder

Musician to be honored with posthumous scholarship

Ralph Humphrey was a well-known drummer in the music industry; he worked on movies including “Star Trek Enterprise,” tv shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and was a part of multiple bands. Most recently, he was a member of The Odd Dogs.

To the people who knew him personally Humphrey was a kind, generous and passionate person.

“He was very serious. His work ethic was just amazing,” said Marcelo Bucater, a former student of Humphrey’s, and current faculty member at Los Angeles College of Music (LACM). “Adding to his generosity … he would be that guy that after class, if you had a question — unless he really had to go — he would stay another 30 minutes or whatever you needed. And not only about music subjects, but it could also

be different things.”

LACM is honoring Humphrey, who died on April 25, due to cancer, with a posthumous drumming scholarship in his name. The college will hold a memorial at its Pasadena campus in late August, where more details on the scholarship will be announced.

Humphrey helped found LACM, originally the Los Angeles Music Academy (LAMA), in 1996 alongside the other department heads at the time; Frank Gambale, Ed Lucie, Joe Porcaro, and Tom Aylesbury, who was the director at the time and current president.

Humphrey was the drum department head for 27 years.

“From his years of teaching experience, he brought that as a good anchor for the department heads who hadn’t had some experience. He was able to really kind of mentor the other department heads in putting programs together and

how to evaluate students,” said Tom Aylesbury, LACM President.

Humphrey was in the music industry for more than 55 years, according to LACM, and had a very successful career with many live and recorded projects. His credits include: “American Idol,” “The Oscars,” “Family Guy,” “The Simpsons, American Dad,” “Pinky and the Brain,” and multiple motion pictures.

He was also a member of the Don Ellis big band, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and worked with Al Jarreau, The Manhattan Transfer, Free Flight, Natalie Cole and several other individuals and groups.

“He was the drummer’s drummer. Celebrities would go study with him to get tune-ups,” Aylesbury said.

Whether the people Humphrey taught were in the program at LACM or were already professional drummers, he strove to teach everything they needed to succeed in the future. Although Humphrey wasn’t at the forefront of LACM’s image, he was well-known where it mattered and was one of the first call drummers in Los Angeles, according to Aylesbury.

“Musicians can be famous to different audiences, you know, he wasn’t a public face, but his celebrity was huge amongst the musicians. He was highly respected,” Aylesbury said.

According to Bucater, he knew whenever Humphrey was in the room because he had an aura about him that he was important, but also because of the respect he received from everyone. After all, he would speak to people in a kind but very intense and direct way.

Bucater recalls funny moments in the classroom when he and his classmates would play movie tracks to Humphreys to see if he worked on the movie.

“We were teasing him and Joe because they worked together on a lot of recordings, and we would play the tracks from the movie and be like, ‘Ralph did you play this one?’ And he’s like, ‘What is that?’ And we were talking about Mission Impossible, like those kinds of movies. He said, ‘Yeah, I recorded that snare, bass drum, like sure.’ Because it was like just another day for him,” Bucater said.

Humphrey not only left his mark on the music industry, but on the lives of the students he taught.

“I would say he changed not only my life, but generations. He worked since 1996 at LACM, but before that, he taught at the Musicians Institute. So you have probably more than 1000 students from all over the world,” Bucater said. “And everybody would agree that he changed everybody’s life because he created the drum curriculum, which is also one of the most

important things, and I would say it’s one of his best works as far as a legacy.”

According to Bucater, students came from around the world to learn from Humphrey and Joe Porcaro. Bucater himself is from Brazil, and within his class, there were students from Croatia, Germany, Spain, Indonesia, China, Japan and Ecuador.

Humphrey also taught his students how to have a lengthy career.

“Ralph was the guy that never had any kind of injury, and it was, mechanically speaking, it was beautiful to watch him play because it was flawless. It was just like he was painting, and that’s a big deal, especially for drummers,” Bucater said. “We hear plenty of stories of drummers that had their career not as long as they could because of injuries because they didn’t have proper technique. So, Ralph absolutely changed lives in that matter as well.”

According to Aylesbury and Bucater, Humphrey was a natural-born teacher, and it was in his heart and something he was compelled to do.

“It’s very hard to find someone who is good as a performer and as a teacher.

That’s where, a lot of the time, you get great teachers, but they’re not amazing performers, or vice versa. Ralph was definitely one of the rare cases that he could do both at the same level,” Bucater said.

Humphrey would see the needs of his students and write curricula or books based on them. Humphrey authored two drum method books, “Even in the Odds,” published by Barnhouse and “Rhythm By The Number,” published by Alfred.

Humphrey left an impact on everyone he encountered, not only with drum knowledge and skill but with the advice he gave people.

“Personally, when I had a rough moment in my life, he was there, and he really helped. He was a wizard; that’s exactly what he was. He would know what to tell you in every situation,” Bucater said.

The prolific career Humphrey created, and the lives he changed are why LACM is honoring him with the posthumous drumming scholarship.

“Honor to continue his legacy as a musician … this is what I really would like to do just to preserve (it) — and it is gratitude for what he did here to help make LACM what it is today,” Aylesbury said.

An ‘Elite’ Team

Gym expands to share personable fitness experience

Whether one is looking to lose weight or simply wants to stay active, the Pasadena Elite Fitness team is there to help clients on their fitness journeys.

Located at 155 W. Green Street in Pasadena, Elite Fitness is a small personal training studio committed to bringing people of all ages a personable, individualized workout experience.

Its team is looking forward to reaching more members of the community, as the gym recently underwent an expansion.

“We expanded right next door, actually, brought on a new trainer and we’re trying to fill up (his schedule),” said Dan Batz, Pasadena Elite Fitness owner and personal trainer. “We’re trying to grow and, so far, it’s going well.”

Batz, who was drafted by the Dodgers and played with their minor league for several years, bought the gym in 2013 with a business partner. He became the sole owner less than two years later.

Over the past decade, a majority of Pasadena Elite Fitness’ growth has been due to client referrals, by word-of-mouth and even people discovering the gym while walking past. Batz said that advertising has been very minimal.

As a result, he and his team are excited for their new chapter and growing the Pasadena Elite Fitness family.

Customizable training

Pasadena Elite Fitness serves a wide variety of individuals who all have different fitness goals — whether they are looking to gain weight, build strength or are athletes.

Its services and programs include personal training, small group classes, sports training, nutrition counseling, injury rehabilitation and prenatal and postnatal fitness.

The gym’s specialization, however, is personal training in order to provide clients with a highly individualized fitness plan.

“Our model is the client comes into the gym, meets the trainer, goes over their goals. The trainer customizes the workout plan based on the client’s goals, their individual needs, so they formulate a program based on that,” Batz said. “From that, you determine how many days a week you will

need to reach those goals and then just go from there.”

Elite Fitness even provides FaceTime training, which became popular with clients during the pandemic. Some clients take advantage of this option and have a hybrid schedule, where they attend a couple of sessions in the gym each week paired with a few at home.

Training sessions, which cost between $70 to $90 per individual session, can be purchased in a membership or a package.

A membership is a monthly fee based on how many times a week the client comes in, whether it’s two or four times a week.

“The monthly fee holds you a little more accountable,” Batz said. “You have to come in and use those sessions each month, they don’t carry over.”

They also have a package option, which allows them to purchase a number of sessions in advance. These sessions do not expire and can be used whenever one would like.

A private, personable setting

Unlike many gyms, Pasadena Elite Fitness is dedicated to privacy.

For every session, each client gets their own private workout room complete with a wide selection of equipment.

“A lot of clients are maybe intimidated by certain gyms because it’s like all eyes on you, or you have to share equipment and whatnot,” Batz said.

“Here, you have all your equipment, it’s just you and your trainer in your own world. I think a lot of clients like that. They don’t like sharing equipment, especially after COVID, that they just like the cleanliness of the gym. They like the privacy.”

The gym’s family-like atmosphere is another distinguishing factor. Over the years, Elite Fitness has brought people together and formed a number of friendships, creating a warm, friendly community of gym-goers.

“I think that’s probably one of the coolest things that I’ve noticed is the different relationships and just the different professions,” Batz said. “We have clients use each other’s services, like they go to their restaurants, they just see each other out and about in Pasadena. … I like seeing that.”

Staying active as a senior

While Pasadena Elite Fitness serves clients as young as 10 to as old as 91, it receives a decent number of clients who are a part of the older population.

Batz stressed the importance for older individuals to establish a weekly routine to get themselves up and moving around. He said their clients have experienced good results in improving their balance, strength and functional movements by staying active.

“We’ve experienced people that have fallen, and it’s the ability to get up or cut back on the chances of them falling because their balance is improved from them working out,” he said. “But if they do fall, they’re strong enough to get up and get the

help they need if they need it.”

Attending workout sessions at Elite Fitness also allows older clients, some who may live alone, the opportunity to get out.

“Not only do they get the benefits of strength training, balance, flexibility, all that, but it’s also good to come in and just be around others and get a good workout routine going,” Batz said.

Helping others live healthy lifestyles and guiding them on their workout journeys simply makes working in the fitness industry — what Batz loves — that much more fulfilling.

“It’s very rewarding. That’s why I got into the business and that’s why I do it,” he said.

Alicia Bayramian, marketing and events consultant at One Colorado, explained why the 90s was selected as the theme of the summer movie nights.

“In the past, we’ve done movies from the 90s and we’ve seen a huge rise in attendance. So we think that adults love to come and relive a little bit of nostalgia, and parents have a lot of fun introducing their kids to the movies.”

One Colorado is home to popular retail stores like Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Lululemon, as well as delicious dining options including Salt & Straw, Ramen Tatsunoya and Sushi Roku.

Known for their signature events that take place by the historic Victorian brick buildings, One Colorado hosts family friendly opportunities and events for the community. Make sure to check out their website to learn more about fun, family friendly events happening this summer.

basis. Attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and snacks to enjoy the film. The big screen and sound will be provided for the ultimate outdoor movie experience. Optional headless headsets will also be available free of charge for movie-goers that want to fully immerse themselves into the experience.

Movies are PG-13, so parental supervision is advised. Each Saturday, the film will begin screening at 8:30 p.m.

In partnership with IPIC Theaters, guests also have the option to enjoy VIP premier seating with proof of a $50 receipt minimum from One Colorado’s restaurants and shops. The VIP package will include an IPIC promotion, popcorn, soft drink and access to the candy cart.

New this summer, customers who attend Summer Sounds at One Colorado have the chance to preorder a picnic basket from Sage Vegan Bistro and Bakery. The $99 cooler bag will include a 4-pack of Sage Brew, one appetizer, two entrees, dessert, two beer koozies and a blanket. Attendees can pre-order up until 7:30 p.m. the day of the screening.

“(One Colorado) has been doing movies under the stars for over six summers here at One Colorado and we think it’s the perfect event for movie buffs,” Bayramian said.

Head to the courtyard this July and join the community for Saturday night fun.

Mama Makes a Meal

Grief and emotion simmer over in Pasadena Playhouse’s ‘Stew’

It takes courage to grieve. It takes courage to look at the truth. It takes courage to face one’s demons and reveal long-held secrets.

At the Pasadena Playhouse this July and August, playwright Zora Howard will be challenging audiences to do all those things in her Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, “Stew.” In it, three generations of women gather in a kitchen for a command performance by Mama, who wants them there to prepare an important meal.

It’s what Director Tyler Thomas says is not your typical kitchen sink drama, even though it falls into that genre.

“Folks need to come prepared to laugh their faces off and also to be open to face some really emotional questions,” Thomas said. “They should be prepared to laugh but also be open to having their heartstrings pulled in maybe unexpected and surprising ways.”

Thomas met the playwright and had

coffee with her a little over a year ago after being introduced through a mutual friend. So when the Pasadena Playhouse’s artistic director, Danny Feldman, approached her about directing Howard’s play, she was eager to sign on.

“When I read the play, these women sort of materialized in front of me,” Thomas said. “They’re women you know so well. It was almost as if I had heard the play before just sitting in my grandma’s kitchen.”

Thomas, who is a director and choreographer based in New York and was a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, is directing in Los Angeles for the first time. She’s been impressed with the work that the Tony-award winning theater is doing.

“From my first conversations with Pasadena Playhouse, their ethos has been really inspiring to me,” Thomas said. “Their human focus, their people-first (mentality) — it’s really in alignment with how I want to be a part of building out a future of the American theater. They’ve really wel-

comed my questions in terms of reimagining how the theater could work … I found them really eager, willing and ready to be a part of building a new future for the American theater.”

“Stew” is a show that Thomas said gives her the opportunity to create a space that felt familiar to Black people.

“I wanted to create a container in which Black people could feel seen while at the same time turning something familiar on its head — to give us a new way of looking at the kitchen sink drama. I think Zora is attempting to be in dialogue with something very psychological,” Thomas said. “I wanted to take that familiar aspect and distort it, to invite us to look beneath the commonplace layers.”

LisaGay Hamilton, an actor with a long list of theater, film and television credits — including a recent performance in Broadway’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” plays the role of Mama. She also cites the Pasadena Playhouse environment as an impressive place to work and create art.

Mama is a character, Hamilton said, who demonstrates the choices Black women must make and displays the cycles in the life of a Black woman and her family. It’s an exploration of the consequences of choices and of what grief can do to a person.

It is that struggle with grief that Thomas said makes the 90-minute play more culturally relevant on a global scale than it was even a few years ago when it first premiered. She pointed out that society is grappling with grief.

“It is extraordinary that they just won the Tony for Best Regional Theater and I can see why they did,” Hamilton said. “It’s a real family wanting to provide nothing but support for their actors. The staff and stage management are really there for you so that you can do the best that you can. You can’t ask for a more safe space to make mistakes and grow and do all the things you need to do to create a full character.”

Despite a long list of acting credits — including some of theater’s most iconic characters, Hamilton said she doesn’t think she’s ever played a character like Mama before, something that both attracted her to the role and scared her about it.

“There’s a particular style that I didn’t necessarily grow up with,” Hamilton said. “For me, it’s a really transformational moment to create this character who is very, very demanding. Loves big, is harsh, is not a touchy-feely woman. She wants attention and she wants attention now. But she’s also a mother who has lost a child, so there’s a lot on her plate.”

Mama is an African American woman in her mid- to late-50s who has gathered her family into the kitchen to celebrate an anniversary. Everyone knows how important the meal is to her. As the women make the mean, you learn about their “ingredients” — what makes them who they are, their baggage and their interests..

“How do we move forward after the loss of millions of people due to COVID?” Thomas asked. “As we as a country continue to grapple with the murder of Black people in their homes and their streets? As we as a country continue to grapple with the insanities of losing children in schools to gun violence?

“The onslaught of violence and death around us makes loss ubiquitous in society at this moment. You would be hardpressed to find a person who has not, in some way, had to grieve something or someone over the past three years.”

“Stew,” she said, manages to grapple with those questions by telling a story that

Theatre 360 presents ‘Mean Girls’ in South Pasadena

Theatre 360, an award-winning, internationally known children’s theater in Pasadena, offers opportunities for young people to develop as performers.

It’s spotlighting multitalented teens with its latest production, “Mean Girls,” from Friday, July 7, to Sunday, July 9.

The musical tells the story of Cady Heron, a girl who grew up in Africa and has now moved to suburban Illinois. She experiences life in high school and soon becomes part of a clique called the Plastics, a group of frenemies/popular girls.

She becomes entangled in revenge plot against the Plastics and their leader Regina George.

Developed by Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin and Tina Fey, “Mean Girls” is based on the 2004 film, which was also written by Fey.

The film was based off Rosalind Wiseman’s novel “Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence.”

The company is presenting the high school version of the musical, which is similar to the Broadway version, without adult references and content.

The Theatre 360 production is directed by Devon Yates, who brought students into the creative process.

“There’s a lot of back and forth,” Yates said.

“I will talk to the actors and say, ‘Here’s

the line. What are you comfortable saying? How do you feel about this?’ We go in depth into the character study and why their character would say it. And also their objective driving their character forward.”

The production stars students aged 12 to 18, including Sydney Wacker as Cady Heron.

Wacker, 17, has been working with Theatre 360 since they were 8 years old. They have had a chance to play a range of different characters, from an old man to a young ingenue.

They have done shows such as “She Kills Monsters,” “School of Rock,” “Around the World in 80 Days,” “Frozen Jr.,” “Jason and the Argonauts,” “Madagascar-A Musical Adventure Jr.” and “Aladdin Jr.”

At first, Wacker thought that they would be better suited for the role of Cady’s rebellious and artsy friend Janis.

They said Cady is a challenging role because she is a different type of character than they have played in the past.

Wacker said “Mean Girls” really allows them to work on character development skills.

“Theatre 360 has always been heavy on character work and developing a really strong relationship not only with our character but the relationships your character has with other characters,” Wacker said.

“I think, for me, that’s really being tested in this show. There’s a lot of conflicting relationships that change very quickly. You have to keep up with what your character is thinking while having to juggle romantic relationships and an abundance of friendship relationships that are all completely different.”

Wacker said Cady has a creative character arc, going from being a quirky new student to a popular girl before rediscovering herself at the end.

“I’m trying to embrace Cady’s weirdness a little bit more because I’m a little bit weird,” Wacker said.

“I think seeing her relinquish that as the play goes on is a bit tragic. It’s almost like her connection to her friends Damian and Janis. She loses her oddballness and gains it again. And also just embracing her femi-

ninity is something I’ve never really had to tackle with a character. I’m trying to bring a little bit more spunk to that and really show the reason why she feels she has to embrace this Barbie-dollesque aesthetic.”

The role of Cady, like many others in the show, requires high belting, for which Wacker has had to prepare.

“I have to practice and stretch my voice every day. I need to crack an F in two numbers, which has been tricky, but I’m getting there,” Wacker said.

Wacker said they can really identify with the themes in “Mean Girls” as a high school student getting ready to go into their senior year at California School of the Arts-San Gabriel Valley.

“It’s all relatable, cliques, leaving people out. It’s really interesting to see how the whole cast can relate to the stuff going on and the Burn Book,” Wacker said. “I see it a lot today with social media and how that translates, how it’s evolved to be more anonymous on social media.”

In the show, social media will be presented through projections.

As a community theater, Theatre 360 strives to bring high-level productions. They are limited by their budget, but Yates said that they find creative approaches for each show.

The students’ commitment is impressive and important.

“My favorite thing is that the students, they are always onboard,” Yates said.

“They are always like, ‘That’s great. Let’s try it.’ Working together in the rehearsals, that’s what we are constantly doing is building those relationships. And building how we put this number together, support each other, do well and follow through throughout the course of a rehearsal into performance.”

Throughout the year, students in Theatre 360 take acting, singing and dancing classes. They also have a chance to train in backstage crew positions.

The theater company really emphasizes development of youth performers.

“We really want to educate and teach the students, just not with what they are doing during rehearsals but the mechanics, techniques and skills sets,” Yates said.

They are a year-round company, presenting five shows each season.

Generally during the school year, they only rehearse two days a week, allowing for students to focus on academics.

“We want to be a part of their lives, but we realize that we have to fit into a family’s life, and scholastics are important,”

Yates said.

In 23 years, they have worked with over 14,000 young people in the Los Angeles area.

Devon said even those who don’t pursue acting later in life can learn skills they use every day, such as being on time and prepared and working as a team.

Along with chances to perform in pro-

fessional-level productions, the company offers summer camps, a college prep program, New York trips, private lessons and special workshops.

Students have a chance to pursue different interests and learn about a range of performance types, such as Shakespeare or improv comedy.

Wacker has noticed a constant evolution as a performer, as they have continued to build on their skills and develop new ones.

“In our theater company, there’s always something to learn because we are being trained by professionals,” Wacker said.

“I’m not done learning, even if I think I am. Everyone still has something they can work on… I know I want to be the best performer I can be. Every time I take a class, I learn something new, especially in dance, which is where I struggle the most. That’s what I’ve been working on for a while.”

Students have gone on to performing

arts high schools or colleges such as the Juilliard School, Yale, Carnegie Melon, NYU, Emerson, Northwestern University, UCLA and the University of Michigan.

Alumni have worked on Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, TV shows and independent films.

Although not every student chooses to pursue an acting career, there are some like Wacker who take an interest in theater early and want to continue with it through college and beyond.

“It’s scary stuff, but I really do want to do this. I know it’s hard but because I have received the training, it’s only cemented my desire more and made me more ready for the challenge,” Wacker said.

Yates said it is meaningful to connect with students and their families and watch the performers grow over the years.

“It’s so wonderful to be a part of somebody’s journey,” Yates said.

“All Consuming: Art and the Essence of Food”

TO AUG. 14

This exhibition takes guests on a journey to the past to Europe from the year 1500

and into the 1900s and shows how artists responded to and shaped food cultures. There are 60 paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures from the Norton Simon’s collections. There are three distinct themes — “hunger,” “excess” and “sustenance” — these three dive into a range of relationships with eating and drinking, the pros and cons, displayed in two galleries at the Norton Simon Museum.

“Grand Views:

The Immersive World of Panoramas”

TO SEPT. 10

Presented by Forest Lawn Museum of Glendale and the Velaslavasay Panorama, “Grand Views: The Immersive World of Panoramas” explores the history of panoramic paintings, an immersive, large-scale artistic format popularized in the 18th and

19th centuries. Presented by two distinguished, decades-old arts institutions and panorama experts, Grand Views will feature an array of artworks and artifacts spanning the late-18th century to present, including never-before-displayed preparatory paintings, 19th century prints and posters, a painted movie backdrop, and more. Organized thematically, the exhibition addresses three major topics: the early history of panoramas, crucifixion panoramas, and panoramas in Hollywood and Los Angeles. In addition, Forest Lawn will launch a new documentary-style audio-visual program on Jan Styka’s “Crucifixion,” during the run of the exhibition. A centerpiece of the exhibition is “Panorama of the Valley of the Smokes” by Sara Velas, founder of the Velaslavasay Panorama, in 2000.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself.

Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO

PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponeme nts be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish

to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0 772 or visit this internet website http://search. nationwidepostin g.com/ propertySearch Terms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2200287252 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916)939-0 772, or visit this internet website http://search. nationwidepostin g.com/ propertySearch Terms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2200287252 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee.
