Think Globally, Act Locally

Happy campers who are awesome

“I’m Laura Mellene from Estonia, and I’m here at this Empowerment Self-Defense Global camp because of you,” she said.

“Really? How’s that?” I asked.

“My friend Pille Tsopp saw your movie, ‘Beauty Bites Beast,’ at the United Nations in New York. She contacted me right away and said I needed to see the movie and incorporate what I learned from it into my work,” she said.

Because of “Beauty Bites Beast” (BBB) and Pille, Laura now teaches Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) to Ukrainian refugee kids. Pille Tsopp is one of those people who say what they will do and then do it.

Tsopp truly “grokked” the collateral benefits of women (and anyone who’s systematically marginalized) in practicing setting emotional, verbal and physical boundaries. After the screening, Pille told me she would run for office in Estonia because of BBB.

Speaking up and taking stands can be super difficult for those who have been brainwashed into being seen but not heard. We’re often breaking unspoken, rigid gender rules of appropriate behavior.

Just the other day, a dear friend of ours laughed in disbelief when we told him that I had put my husband’s standing desk together. “By yourself?” he asked, incredulous.

“Yes,” I said.

“Even the mechanism that raises and lowers it?”

Madre and South Pasadena

“Yes,” I answered, with my own incredulity that he found my skill set so outrageous. “I like puzzles, and that’s all assembly is: solving a three-dimensional puzzle.”

My friend has a rigid mindset about women that hadn’t been challenged before, as apparently he hadn’t experienced a woman like me before. And that’s the thing about rigid mindsets: “What mindset? I don’t have a mindset!” Mindsets hide themselves from the thinker. Mindsets don’t question their own existence until something or someone challenges them.

The world of women’s self-defense is chock full of mindsets that we of the Empowerment Self-Defense world are devoted to dismantling. I’m fond of saying, “Think globally, act locally; there’s nothing as local as your own body.” There’s also nothing as local as your own mindset! If you think women and girls cannot do certain things, guess what? That belief will fulfill itself … until it doesn’t. The culture I grew up in implanted my belief that some man would always be around to protect me, but guess what? When I actually encountered a man with a knife who was about to plunge it into me, I had that particular mindset challenged big time. I’m sure the men in my life would have loved to have protected me, except they weren’t around!

I discovered so many attitudes to unpack that I realized I needed to write a book and then a movie based on it to unravel all of the misconceptions and misunderstandings that can prove deadly for someone who has

been assaulted. I am fortunate to be a small part of a larger movement that can use my book and movie to forward our commitment to empowerment.

So here I am at Camp Echo in upstate New York with my sisters and brothers of the Empowerment Self-Defense movement. We teach classes in holistic ways to people who need skills to keep themselves safe from systemic racism, sexism … all the “isms” other than Buddhism.

ESD Global is developing a phone app called “MyPwr.” I’ll dedicate an entire column to it when it’s widely available, as anyone with a smartphone can access it. For now, here’s some info from the website mypwr.co.il: “A scalable and user-friendly solution to teach the principles of Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) with the goal of eliminating interpersonal and gender-based violence.” Who would be against that? Oh, right, people are committed to keeping the status quo of a violence epidemic in place.

I usually loathe including lists as I have limited space here, but I must do it this time because of the sheer scope of global diversity we have at camp. I am so proud to say we have people from Albania, Israel, Zambia, Swaziland, Romania, the United States, Nigeria, Mali, Chile, Rwanda, Cameroon, Brazil, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Lesotho, the Philippines, Belize, the Czech Republic, Australia, Estonia, Belgium, Canada, Bolivia and Costa Rica!

Where else could I make friends with an African Muslim man committed to gender justice? Kassoum Coulibaly Sahel is one of those male leaders who gets the urgency of dissolving rigid gender mindsets. (Do a web search for Kassoum … wow.)

I predict a tour of former Soviet bloc countries for me and my gender justice warrior husband, Ken Gruberman. Daniela Draghici of Romania, Tetiana Kolot of Ukraine, Lia Jobava of Georgia, Laura Mellene of Estonia, Linda Stucbartova of the Czech Republic and Lyailya Islamova of Kazakhstan have all expressed a desire for screenings of BBB with us in attendance. Domestically, we’ll be re-launching BBB to pick up where the pandemic left off.

None of this would be possible without fierce social justice entrepreneur Yudit Zicklin Sidikman, the catalyst for so much good in the world. She is both the founder and president of ESD Global and the executive producer of BBB. If you’d told me years ago that my film would be instrumental in training Ukrainian refugee children, I would have had you checked for delusional thinking. Now, my Estonian soul doppelganger Laura Mellane and I have shared dreams, a shared vision and shared in-real-life hugs. What a miracle.

‘The First of Its Kind’

Pasadena to unveil protected bikeway on Union Street

To help increase safety and connectivity for community members on the road, the city of Pasadena has neared completion on its Union Street Protected Bikeway project, a 1.5-milelong, two-way protected bike lane that runs along Union Street between Arroyo Parkway and Hill Avenue. On Saturday, Sept. 9, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in front of city hall to unveil the new construction.

“The project really started as part of the bicycle transportation action plan that was developed in 2015 … to determine how we could really enhance the bicycle network in Pasadena,” said Joaquin Siques,

deputy director of transportation for the city of Pasadena. “Union Street was identified as a corridor where we could provide a bike facility that has additional protection and really provide that two-way connection between Pasadena City College, a connection to Caltech and bring people, residents and students from those campuses into the central business district on a corridor that had a lot of extra space.”

Along with routes meant for PCC and Caltech students, the project will also help connect residents and visitors to destinations like Old Pasadena and Playhouse Village on bike.

Outfitted with traffic signals and curb ramp improvements, the protected bikeway is the first of its kind in Pasadena. The

location for the project, which also includes a 0.3-mile-long bike boulevard that runs along Holliston Avenue between Union Street and Cordova Street, was chosen after extensive discussions with community members, who made their voices heard through targeted stakeholder meetings.

Siques said Union Street was selected because it is a one-way street with multiple lanes and “well under capacity from a vehicle standpoint” while being conveniently situated near local hotspots.

“Once we started going out and developing this as an individual project, we had additional meetings with the residents and the businesses along the route. A lot of that was coordinated through the Playhouse Village Association,” Siques said. “In addition, we had just open meetings at City Hall … where we invited the public to provide their comments and their feedback on the conceptual design and what they’d like to see in developing a multimodal connection here on Union Street.”

Siques explained that the meetings often raised questions surrounding the potential impacts to vehicular traffic along the corridor. Since Union Street has three through lanes, a left turn pocket and a right turn pocket at several locations with often light traffic volume, Siques concluded there was adequate space to remove a

travel lane and build the bikeway.

“We’re doing additional outreach onto the businesses there and the residents to make sure that people are parking in the correct space and not parking in the bike lanes,” he added. “In the lanes themselves, the bikes will be controlled by bicycle signals. We have installed that in the past in Pasadena at Marengo and Orange Grove … but here at Union Street, all 14 intersections are controlled by traffic signals and a bicycle signal. So, it’s definitely new for Pasadena.”

After using the National Association of City Transportation Officials’ guidelines as a baseline for the start of the project, the Pasadena’s transportation department sought inspiration from other cities with advanced bicycle infrastructure, namely Portland, Seattle and Austin. One of the key takeaways that informed the Union Street bikeway’s design, according to Siques, was the incorporation of driveways.

“For driveways with high volumes, we wanted to make them look different for both the bicyclist and the motorist,” he explained. “You’ll notice along the route that … really all of the high-volume driveways have a raised bikeway, so the bike lane goes up a few inches and that way the bicyclist is aware that they’re beginning to cross either one or multiple driveways that

have higher volumes. And they look a little different than the standard driveway treatment.

“At every driveway, we have green paint. But at these raised driveways, the bicyclist is raised a little bit higher and then the motorist can see that as well when they’re pulling in or out of the driveway.”

Siques noted that the project focuses both on connectivity and safety for all road users by physically separating the different modes of travel. He said he believes the work put into removing a travel lane and restriping will also successfully slow down traffic on the corridor.

“Then from the connectivity standpoint, the different land uses along this corridor, like the restaurants, … they’re limited by on-street parking,” Siques said. “(The bikeway) gives people another option to get to those venues, so we do think the connectivity it’ll provide will give an economic boost to the area by allowing peo-

ple to get there without having to drive there.”

The upcoming Union Street Protected Bikeway ribbon cutting ceremony will include a resource fair and speeches by local, state and federal elected officials and dignitaries to help raise awareness for the project and better inform local residents.

“We want to make sure that both motorists and bicyclists are aware of the operations and that they’re cautious when using this facility because even as a separated facility, there will be pedestrians going from their vehicles to the curb and vehicles coming in and out of driveways,” Siques said. “The corridor is designed to make it the most visible for bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians so they can see each other, and it has a lot of safety features built in, but we also want to make sure that all the road users are taking on that personal responsibility to be mindful of their own safety.”

Following a long standoff, Shuford surrendered to SWAT operators without incident.

Shuford was on parole for robbery.

The Pasadena Police Department’s robbery/homicide unit investigated the homicide, executing multiple search warrants and collecting evidence.

On Aug. 23, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony complaint against Shuford for the murder. Shuford was charged with one count of murder and one count of firearm by a felon. His bail was set at $3.075 million.

A New Era of Antidepressants

Postpartum survivor speaks on new FDA-approved drug

Suicide is a leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States and globally, accounting for up to 20% of postpartum deaths. Pregnancy is a roller coaster of hormonal and physical changes, but add in depression, and it can turn deadly. Postpartum depression is chronically “underdiagnosed and undertreated,” explained Dr. Walker Ladd, a clinical psychologist, faculty member and chair of the research department at Saybrook University in Pasadena. Change is on the horizon with the advent of a new Food and Drug Administration drug approved to treat postpartum depression.

On Aug. 4, the FDA approved the first

oral medication to treat postpartum depression. The drug, called zuranolone and branded as Zurzuvae, is a once-a-day pill by biotechnology companies Sage Therapeutics and Biogen.

Whereas some antidepressants can take up to eight weeks for patients to see results, the medication relieves postpartum symptoms within days. The drug works as a fast-acting steroid, binding to GABA receptors in the brain and resetting imbalanced neurotransmitters affecting patients struggling with depression.

Many new mothers experiencing postpartum depression only receive treatment well after their symptoms begin because they are not screened immediately at discharge, and they may not see their provid-

er until six weeks after the baby is born. Most women experiencing symptoms are prescribed standard antidepressants, which can take weeks to take effect.

“So now we’re looking at two or three months of suffering with life-threatening symptoms,” Ladd said. “Zurzuvae’s efficacy in a quick amount of time is a game-changer.”

Postpartum depression, an episode of major depression that can begin in the later stages of pregnancy or after childbirth, affects 15% of women in the weeks or months after having a baby. During pregnancy, hormones like progesterone are elevated to help develop the fetus. But once the baby is delivered, those hormone levels rapidly decline, returning to baseline in around two weeks. Until the advent of Zurzuvae, the only treatment for postpartum depression was an IV injection dispensed by health care professionals at certain facilities.

Like other forms of depression, postpartum depression is characterized by sadness, a loss of interest in activities that once brought joy and an overall decreased ability to feel pleasure. What follows can present as loss of energy, suicidal ideation, cognitive impairment and feelings of sadness or inadequacy.

“Having access to an oral medication will be a beneficial option for many of these women coping with extreme, and

sometimes life-threatening, feelings,” said Dr. Tiffany R. Farchione, director of the division of psychiatry in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Zurzuvae’s efficacy was tested in two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter studies. The results revealed that patients taking Zurzuvae showed significantly more symptom improvement than their placebo counterparts. Zurzuvae is currently in trial with the FDA for the general population as a treatment for depression.

Most people harbor preconceived notions of motherhood, accompanied by an onslaught of images, beliefs and information. “Anything that resembles the current norm for motherhood is depicted as radiant, attached and connected,” said Ladd, standing in direct opposition to a mother experiencing postpartum depression.

Throughout history and mythology, the concept of the “mad mother” has been ingrained in our collective psyche as a threat, explained Ladd. Many mothers who deviate from the preconceived norms associated with motherhood are met with fear. Yet, mothers with thoughts of harming themselves or their babies amount to less than 1% and are associated with postpartum psychosis rather than depression.

“We’re still really uncomfortable saying ‘mental illness’ because it comes with a stigma,” Ladd explained. “We look at this

specific topic of mothers and psychiatric differences through a lens that is very heavy with stigma.” Because of this stigma, many mothers may be hesitant to seek help.

Ladd explained mothers face undue pressure and judgment, even when not experiencing illness. There is an unfair pressure for mothers to bounce back physically and mentally after having a baby and “love every minute of motherhood and not have things like depression or anxiety, and it’s supposed to be natural,” Ladd said. “It just doesn’t happen that way for everyone.”

At the time of her son’s birth in 2000, Ladd worked as a couples and family therapist. Despite working as a trained mental health professional, when postpartum depression struck, Ladd had “no idea” what was happening to her and nearly lost her life. She finally received treatment after around two months of symptoms. After treatment, it was “like night and day,” she explained.

With medication and a specialized team behind her, Ladd remained in remission throughout her second pregnancy. “Realizing that I wasn’t going to feel like that again is one of the happiest memories I

have in this life,” Ladd said. “It felt like I got the birth I deserved, that everyone deserves.” Her experience drove her to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology, and she has since dedicated herself to maternal advocacy, which includes working as a certified doula and conducting research on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

In her book, “Transformed by Postpartum Depression: Women’s Stories of Trauma and Growth,” Ladd collected stories from 20 women about their journeys through postpartum depression and the growth they experienced. She also recently co-published a study on the experience of postpartum anxiety during COVID-19. “I’ve been trying to increase the awareness of these disorders in my work and research,” Ladd explained.

Zurzuvae has the potential “to erase a lot of the suffering that occurs, and we could potentially reform or reshape how we perceive the postpartum period,” explained Ladd. As the scientific and medical communities continue to research and delve into the root causes and treatments for postpartum depression, Ladd hopes to see a greater awareness and understanding surrounding the condition.

Grammy Museum tells a Taylor Swift love story

There’s no bad blood between Taylor Swift and the Grammy Museum.

The venue is hosting a special pop-up exhibit, “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version)” through Monday, Sept. 18, in the fourth-floor theater gallery.

The exhibit immerses the visitor into the world of Swift’s recent “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” music video, with a display of 11 costumes and two instruments.

The costumes were all worn during Swift’s original “Speak Now” era. The music video for “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” features actors

Joey King and Taylor Lautner breaking Swift out of a museum vault while Presley Cash waits in the getaway car — a symbolic representation of how it has felt for Swift to have her fans help her reclaim her music.

Swift wrote and directed the music video, realizing her dream of directing fight scenes and a heist storyline, with help from director of photography, Jonathan Sela, ASC.

The exhibit started when Swift played multiple shows at SoFi Stadium.

“We had a Taylor Swift exhibit in 2015,” said Kelsey Goelz, associate curator, Grammy Museum.

“It’s fun to have a new exhibit about her. It’s 13 artifacts — 13 is her favorite num-

“It was fun to watch all the ‘Swifties’ have a moment in the gallery, swapping friendship bracelets,” she said. “There’s such a community vibe. They came decked out; some of them were decked out in the outfits they were going to wear to the stadium. Everybody was in there singing. It was great seeing groups of friends, mother-daughter duos or a whole family checking out the Taylor Swift items. They looked at everything on each floor very carefully, so they didn’t miss a thing.”

Bloody Injustice

Open Fist Theatre Company depicts a haunting reality in upcoming Dominique Morisseau play

When it comes to drama, real events can make for some of the most compelling stories told upon theater company stages.

Open Fist Theatre Company at Atwater Village Theater recognizes this, which is one reason it is staging Dominique Morisseau’s “Blood at the Root” from Saturday, Sept. 9, to Saturday, Oct. 28, directed by Michael A. Shepperd.

“This play feels so relevant for right now because we keep reliving these incidents,” Shepperd said.

“This is a fantastic ensemble piece that uses rhythm, sound and poetry to explore friendship, racism and the miscarriage of justice.”

Morisseau based her 2014 poetic play on events that took place in Jena, Louisiana, in 2006. It began when a Black student new to the school asked if he could sit under a tree that was reputed to be reserved for white students (in the play, the student is female and named Raylynn). The principal insisted it was for everyone.

The next day, three nooses were found hanging from the tree. The community dismissed it as a “harmless, adolescent prank” and nothing was done about it. The district attorney, unhappy that students protested the event, called a school assembly. He attended it with local law enforcement officials and threatened Black students saying, “I can be your best friend or worst enemy. I can take away your lives with the stroke of a pen.”

A Black student was beaten by a group of white students when he tried to attend a party in early December, and then a white graduate of the school threatened a group of Black students with a shotgun at a convenience store.

They avoided injury by wrestling the gun away from him and turning it into the police — who then charged the Black

boys with assault and stealing a gun. The white gun owner was not charged.

Then six Black students beat a white student, Justin Barker, a student known for supporting the noose hangers and referring to Black students with a racial slur. While Barker was hospitalized, that night he attended a school event and dance. The students accused of beating him were charged as adults with attempted murder.

The case garnered national attention, becoming a symbol of racial inequity and discrimination in the school system.

The disparity in how behavior is treated based on skin color is something the play explores.

“Even though it is an event that happened in 2006, it is incredibly relevant,” Shepperd said. “That’s basically what we’re experiencing right now.”

Hanging a noose is a hate crime in California, one punishable by a $5,000 fine and a year in county jail. Despite that, there has been several recent incidents. Nooses were hung on the Stanford University campus in 2019, 2021 and 2022. In 2020, a Black doll was found hung from a noose in South Lake Tahoe and other nooses were found hung in Sonoma and Santa Clarita around the same time.

It’s why even though the events of the play took place 17 years ago, it could just as easily be set in 2023. The school board and the district attorney refused to take the hanging of nooses seriously or try to mitigate the harm that it caused.

“By calling it a prank and not addressing the racist elephant in the room, they built this up into something so much more,” Shepperd said.

“There were fights. There were protests. When one of the white students at the school beat got beat up — Black students were getting beat up by other students and it was dismissed — then a white student gets beat up by six young black men. All

of a sudden, these six Black young men, high school students, seniors and juniors, are charged with attempted murder.”

Morisseau is an award-winning playwright and actress from Detroit. She’s written more than nine plays, including three in the Detroit Cycle. She also wrote the book for the musical, “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations” for which she received a Tony nomination. She’s also a two-time winner of the NAACP Image Award.

Shepperd describes the play as a “choreopoem,” a play infused with hiphop music and movement. He’s working with Yusuf Nasir to choreograph the play. Even the play’s title has musical influences. It comes from the Billie Holiday song “Strange Fruit.” The lyrics in that song include, “Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root.”

“The way that I’m approaching it is very much a choreopoem,” Shepperd said. “There’s a lot of rhythm and movement to the piece, and a lot of time there are people speaking monologues directly to the audience. It has the feeling of ‘for colored girls (who have considered suicide)’ that was just on Broadway.”

Shepperd said the play deeply explores the double standard people of color are subjected to all the time. He points out any time something is done to a Black person, they’re immediately blamed and questioned as to what they might have done to deserve it.

“I appreciate that (Morisseau) goes into the double standard that we see all the time,” Shepperd said. “People of color are held to different standards and are treated more severely. Criminal charges get brought for things that get laughed off if a white child or teenager does it. Black folks are never given the benefit of the doubt.”

Those are issues he regularly discusses with the show’s cast as they rehearse the play and delve into how they need to portray the story.

“One of the things I tell my cast at every rehearsal is that we’re going to tell the story honestly and truthfully,” Shepperd said.

“Even though it may sting because of the highly charged nature of the piece, we can’t hold anything back. I want to offer a very true glimpse into how racism affects us not only as a society, but as humans and how those things can upend even the strongest relationships with people.”

He said the ensemble cast and the creative team are working together to make sure no one is let off the hook for the ways they engage in racist behavior. He’s also seeking out a very visually and emotionally immersive experience.

Some of that is done with music. Marc Antonio Pritchett is the sound designer, and he and Shepperd are seeking out sounds that influenced the time period.

“I love creating a really good soundscape,” Shepperd said, explaining that many group scenes he is approaching the way he would a musical number. “We’ve been discovering who can clap, who can stomp their feet and things like that. There’s a musicality that we can create just using our bodies.”

Most cast members are recent college graduates, including two whom Shepperd has worked with in a recent Open Fist production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” — Malik Bailey and Azeem Vecchio. Oth-

er ensemble members are Deandra Bernardo, Emma Bruno, Nychelle C.E. Hawk, Nicholas Heard, Jeremy Reiter II, Caroline Rose, Jack David Sharpe, Grace Soens and Amber Tiara.

“These are very talented young people who are just very strongly wanting to tell this story,” Shepperd said.

While in mid-August he and scenic designer Joel Daavid were still finalizing details of the set, the centerpiece will be a large oak tree they plan to extend out as far as possible into the space.

“Everything’s beautiful and idyllic and then all of a sudden three nooses appear on that tree,” Shepperd said.

“That is the overwhelming presence of this entire piece. How can we move forward with what had been considered to be the norm? (The racism) was always present in hidden forms, but now you can’t avoid it. It’s there all the time, sitting there, watching us, looking at it.”

Life Lessons

Comedian/teacher puts community service first

Bryan Ross could be called an “inspiration.”

The Watts-born, Compton-raised comedian spends his days teaching in schools throughout underserved communities in Los Angeles County.

In August, he did something for himself. He performed during the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland from Aug. 17 to Aug. 21.

The Ánimo Venice Charter High School teacher landed the gigs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival thanks to Ryan Mold, a London-based comic he befriended.

“I wanted to take my stand up international,” he said. “Ryan said if I was ever in London to hit him up. He’d find a couple places for me. I saw that the Fringe Festival was coming up in Scotland, so he added me to the bill.”

Ross will show off his comedic chops at

The Ice House in Pasadena at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2; The Electric Lodge in Venice at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4; and at the Asylum’s “TV Land: The Live Immersive Show” in Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7.

A teacher by trade, Ross has worked at Para Los Niños in DTLA. Currently, he is a physical education instructor at Ánimo Venice Charter High School.

“Comedy helps when the students get a bit out of control,” said Ross, who has a T-shirt line called Chuckle Brand. “I use my humor to get them back in line.”

He considers his comedy “observational and a bit self-deprecating.” Sometimes it didn’t quite translate well to the U.K. crowd, but he was nonetheless happy with the appearances.

“It was definitely an amazing, life-changing experience,” Ross said. “Once I got there, I learned that Edinburgh is a walking town. Everything is so close.

You don’t need public transportation, Uber or a car service. There’s this saying in LA, ‘Nobody walks in LA.’ It’s so true.

“It was very refreshing to be able to walk around. The architecture, the buildings, that rich history was just so amazing to take in. Everyone I met was very nice, very genuine. That’s just the start.”

The interaction with other artists was refreshing, Ross added.

“Everyone was there doing a show or promoting a show, trying to get on a show,” he said. “There was this hustle, but this positive energy of everybody hustling, trying to network and be seen. It felt like, for me, that you were doing something great. It was on such a grand scale. It’s one of the largest free art festivals in the world. Just to be a part of that was incredible.”

An actor as well, Ross said the hospitality was great in Scotland — especially at the Castle Park Guest House, where he stayed.

“It was lovely,” he said. “I had a Scottish breakfast there. I wasn’t familiar with a Scottish breakfast. It’s eggs, baked beans, square beef sausage, a flat scone and vegetarian haggis. It was a really big breakfast every morning. There was a fifth option: smoked salmon. I had more of that option than the Scottish breakfast. Those Scots know how to eat and that’s a great thing.”

Comedy wasn’t always in Ross’ cards — but community service was.

“Me growing up in Watts, I was a product of the inner-city,” he said. “I grew up in the ’80s. The crack epidemic was happening, and my father was affected, so were a couple of uncles and aunties. I saw there was a definite need for male mentors to get the youth off the street. I told myself that once I had the opportunity to do so, I would give back as well.”

Concurrently, he was frequently told he should do stand-up, something he long had in mind.

Bryan Ross will appear at The Ice House in Pasadena on Saturday, Sept. 2; The Electric Lodge in Venice on Monday, Sept. 4; and Asylum on Thursday, Sept. 7, in LA.

“Fear is what kept me from being in stand-up,” he added. “I grew up in musical comedy. One of my high school history teachers really pushed me. I was afraid of the boos. Fast forward to when I was 34, and I was tired of being afraid. I just wanted to do it. The best way was on my own terms, on my birthday, at the biggest venue I could think of: The Comedy Store off Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.”

Even though he was prepped by other comics, the show was pretty lackluster, he said.

“I fell flat on my face,” he said. “I was terrible. It was so bad.”

However, that rush of being on stage kept him inspired. That initial “failure” kept him motivated to do better next time.

“Every opportunity I had, I became more confi dent,” he said. “I love the feeling of being up there and telling my story. I knew I needed to continue doing this.”

For the Love of Pasta

Uovo brings fresh Italian meals to South Lake Avenue

In Italian, the word for egg is “uovo.”

It’s also the name of a new restaurant in town.

Opening its doors on Aug. 11 in The Commons on South Lake Avenue, Uovo is a sophisticated Italian trattoria that specializes in handmade fresh pasta from Italy.

When we say, “from Italy,” we mean fresh pasta made by hand and shipped fresh daily to Los Angeles from the restaurant’s own pasta kitchen in Bologna.

It’s an exceptionally unusual system that ultimately delivers a pasta experience that can only be duplicated in, well, Italy. The restaurant’s name provides a clue as to what makes Italian-made pasta truly superior and why Uovo goes to such great lengths to bring its pasta to its restaurants in Los Angeles. It launched in Santa Monica in August 2017, but the Pasadena store represents the fifth location of this unique-

ly modeled artisanal pasta concept.

Engineered and operated by partners Lele Massimini, his brother Carlo Massimini and Jerry Greenberg, it’s no coincidence Uovo shares courtyard space on South Lake with the reliably excellent sushi fixture Sugarfish.

Lele Massimini and Greenberg partnered with Kazunori and Yumiko Nozawa in 2007 to launch the popular sushi concept. The Sugarfish Pasadena location opened in 2015.

The Massiminis are natives of Rome and, when traveling through Italy with Jerry Greenberg, noted the distinctly superior quality of Italian pasta and initially attempted to duplicate it in LA. The success of their sushi venture opened the door for the partners to consider pivoting into artisanal fresh pasta in Los Angeles.

“(With Uovo) we had been wanting to go to Pasadena since pre-pandemic for sure, because of how much we know about the guest base, nice families, nice

people. We just love it all the way around,” Lele Massimini noted.

By the way, the partners do not think of their restaurant collection as a “chain” nor is there an ambition for world domination. Their sensibility and approach as restaurateurs is far more sincerely mindful.

As Lele Massimini explained, “We really do not focus at all on expansion. We do not have a plan. We think about the word (expansion) as bringing the food that we are so passionate (about) to neighbors that we love, the people that we love and that’s it. We look at this through a ‘quality’ lens not as ‘expansion.’ That’s why we don’t like the word ‘chain.’”

In fact, the development of multiple local locations also allows for the extraordinary process of daily manufacturing and shipping the fresh pasta from Italy.

“We want to bring the best food as an everyday luxury. As you can imagine, that’s not the cheapest process. Obviously, when we started the concept, in order to do something like that, we weren’t planning on one location.

“We use scale to make the quality better, which is a very important point. If we had one location — and we were going to do the crazy things we do, which is mak-

ing the pasta in Italy — each one of our dishes should (cost) at the very least, exactly twice as much as what it is now,” Massimini speculated.

Massiminis’ passionate obsession for the authentic quality of Uovo’s pasta is genuine.

“I was born and raised in Rome and there is a lot of rivalry between cities in Italy but it’s a known fact that I can admit as a Roman, the very best fresh pasta — the best noodle — comes from the area of Bologna and Modena. That’s why our kitchen is in Bologna.”

What’s the secret? Lele Massimini is happy to divulge.

“The reason why we make it there, we summarize it in two words: ‘eggs’ and ‘hands,’” Lele Massimini said.

“In terms of ingredients, the eggs are what makes the difference for us. Fresh pasta is flour and eggs. Flour you could get it here. You could have it air-shipped and get the exact same quality of flour as you get there. Eggs, however, are not the same thing. You cannot import eggs from Italy to here.

“Eggs there, specifically eggs for pasta,

have a different viscosity and create a pasta with a much silkier texture that binds a lot better with the sauce, which is what you can taste when you go to Bologna and Modena. You can’t replicate it without the egg.”

Hands? Lele Massimini continued, “Now you can buy the eggs in Rome, so why don’t you do the kitchen in Rome? That is because of the other variable which is the ‘hands.’ Those ladies called ‘sfogline.’” That refers to the traditional pasta artisans of Italy, who make pasta by hand without the use of extrusion machines.

“It’s a workforce that is only around Bologna and Modena,” Lele Massimini said. “It’s a typical trade of the area. Unfortunately, it’s a dying art. We’re going to try to keep it alive longer. They are ladies who have been making pasta their whole life. They have been doing it the traditional way of sheeting and cutting, so nothing is extruded. The best of them make pasta for the best restaurants in the area. Those ladies are not going to move to Rome.

“That is just as important as the egg. Both of these two variables are extremely important to make the (best) pasta. That is the reason why we have the kitchen to make our own pasta in Bologna.”

On the first Sunday afternoon of its opening weekend at The Commons snug plaza, the casually elegant space was

crowded with tables of pasta enthusiasts. Only a couple of open stools were available at its sweeping pasta counter, which is the central fixture in the restaurant’s layout.

On arrival, one is greeted with the brio of genuine Italian hospitality by manager and host Christian Bertolini, who notes that the counter seating option provides direct interaction with the chefs and the opportunity to trade notes with other local pasta lovers.

Manny Hui of Arcadia gave a literal “thumbs up” to his bowl of brodo with handmade tortellini. Yolanda Iki of Pasadena commented on the unusually crispy pancetta in her carbonara, “It’s really good!”

Meanwhile, insiders Claire Ramirez and her visiting friend, Cece Pascual of Washington, D.C., shared a true pro-tip: an off-menu special of tagliatelle with truffle butter, paired with a side of sauteed mushrooms with garlic and rosemary. This corner of the Uovo pasta counter exuded an air of happily sated contentment.

The menu at Uovo is divided into three sections, representing the trio of pasta preparation styles: “La Pasta di Bologna,” featuring dishes like the tortellini brodo and lasagna; “La Pasta di Roma,” with Roman favorites like cacio pepe and the carbonara; and “Pasta Classica,” with familiar tastes like pomodoro, spicy arrabbiata, vongole with clams and two turns on ravioli. All the pasta entrees are priced between $17 and $19.

There are also three tasting menus, portioned for two and priced between $34 and $37 per person. Each affords a sample of three pastas from the menu with an anti-

pasti starter and tiramisu for dessert. Depending on one’s preferences, the tasting menus offer an opportunity to indulge in a variety of fresh pasta selections.

It should also be noted each dish is made to order. At the counter, the chefs deliver the pasta to guests directly from the pan to the plate.

The restaurant’s space at The Commons plaza was completely rehabbed by the partners.

As Lele Massimini explained, “We always build from scratch, because we’re very specific about how we design everything. Me, Jerry and Carlo basically worked on every little aspect of the design project together. We design around the food. The food is the centerpiece, and everything is (designed) around what we need to do, to give you the best bite of pasta possible.

“We wouldn’t be able to go into a place and just adapt to the kitchen. We design our own specific kitchen. We ended up proceeding and designing a place we really love in terms of feel.”

Lele Massimini is effusive in expressing his enthusiasm for Uovo’s Pasadena opening. “We couldn’t be happier to be here. We already served this community with Sugarfish for many years, and we are super excited to just literally share the love that we have — for what we believe is the best bite of pasta you can have in America — with everyone in Pasadena.”

‘Five-Star Food’

Zankou Chicken has spawned many imitators

From its humble origins as a street corner restaurant in Beirut, Lebanon, Zankou Chicken has grown into an iconic Southern California eatery about to open its 13th location.

Having opened its first restaurant in the Lebanese capital in the early 1960s serving only chicken, the Iskenderian family made culinary history from the moment it opened its doors, The restaurant, then named Zankou after a river in Armenia, was the first to serve chicken with garlic sauce. Its garlic sauce is now world-famous and has spawned many imitators.

The family eventually escaped a civil war in Lebanon and resettled in the Los Angeles area where it opened its first U.S. location on Sunset and Normandie in 1984. Zankou Chicken’s menu, physical locations and popularity expanded rapidly from that point forward. The one constant is the Iskenderian family has continued to own and operate the franchise.

The menu relies on family recipes and fresh, never frozen, high-quality ingredients such as locally sourced vegetables. Touching on Armenian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern culinary traditions, it features not only rotisserie chicken served as plates and pita wraps, but also shawarma, shish kabobs, falafel, salads and bowls.

“Because we put so much care into each and every single menu item and the quality of the food, you are getting five-star food for medium and average prices,” said Dikran Iskenderian, Zankou Chicken’s marketing director.

“You’re not paying more than $20 a person when you eat at Zankou Chicken. Some sit-down kabob restaurants are charging $30 for the exact same thing. So, with us you’re getting a very high value.”

Iskenderian cites several examples of the ways in which Zankou distinguishes itself from other restaurants that serve similar cuisine.

“We treat the food with special importance,” he said.

“We hand dice the parsley that goes into the tabouli salad, for example. We hand dice the tomatoes. We don’t use a machine because you get a watered-down effect.

Even the lemonade is made by hand, and we put into it mint juice that is juiced by hand. Not many restaurants do that. We care about everything we do.”

Beyond its superior ingredients, multigenerational family recipes and thoughtful food preparation, the restaurant distinguishes itself with how it cooks its food. The cooking process for kabobs does not begin until an order is placed. Nothing is precooked and left sitting until someone buys it.

Zankou’s chicken is cooked rotisserie style in a manner that allows the chicken to marinate in its own juices which makes for a crispier skin with a rich texture.

If there is one signature dish that represents the way in which the eatery differentiates itself from others, it might be its chicken tarna, a trademarked marinated chicken shawarma dish named for the Armenian verb “to turn” that Iskenderian describes as “moist and delicious.”

“Some Greek places usually have one big stack of meat that is pre-made frozen and they just start cooking it,” he said. “For us, it’s not like that. We never freeze it. It’s hand-sliced, marinated in natural herbs and spices. And then we hand layer it. It’s not just one big piece of meat. Ours doesn’t give you heartburn because it’s so fresh and juicy and that’s why people love it. That’s the difference between us and a typical shawarma place.”

By serving high-quality food at affordable prices, Zankou Chicken has earned itself media recognition and even several pop culture references.

Just in the past year, it has been voted Best Chicken by Downtown LA News’ readers and Best Fast Food in California by Food and Wine Magazine. The restaurant has been referenced in multiple television shows and even in a song by Beck.

Far from resting on its laurels, Zankou Chicken has always been an innovator that sometimes chooses to zig where others zag. When it first opened its doors in Los Angeles, the only types of shawarmas locals could order in restaurants were limited to lamb and beef. But just as the family had pioneered the combination of chicken and garlic sauce decades before, it made Southern Califor-

nia reimagine the way a shawarma could be served.

Unlike some other dishes, Zankou Chicken did not invent the chicken shawarma, but “we for sure popularized it in LA,” Iskenderian said. “Before us, no one was doing that. They were doing lamb and beef, but there weren’t people doing chicken.”

Having opened in locations such as Pasadena more than three decades ago and Downtown Los Angeles just two years ago, Zankou chicken is about to be welcomed by its 13th and newest community, Long Beach. The new location is set to open in August. It is a testament to the business’ ability to navigate recent serious challenges to the industry to have reached this point at all.

During the nadir of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, numerous businesses were forced to close their doors to in-person customers. Iskenderian said Zankou Chicken was fortunate not to have locations in malls.

“All of my friends with restaurants in the malls suffered tremendously because they literally could not work for two months because the malls were shut down,” he said.

Prior to the pandemic, Zankou Chicken did about 30% of its business with dine-in customers and 70% with to-go orders. It had only worked with one delivery service, Postmates (since acquired by Uber Eats) when it suddenly was faced with an existential threat to its business.

“We made deals with the delivery companies within a week because we didn’t want to just sit and fumble our thumbs,” Iskenderian said. “We were forced to work with all the delivery companies because delivery became

very, very, prominent very, very fast. Not every restaurant did that. They didn’t want to change. And I think the ones that didn’t want to change are the ones that died.”

It was not long after pandemic-induced shutdowns ended that a new threat arose in the restaurant industry. A significant spike in food inflation forced a dilemma upon Zankou Chicken: raise prices or cut corners on ingredients. In the end, the choice was simple for a restaurant that has built its reputation on quality.

“We never want to go cheaper,” Iskenderian said. “We’re getting high quality meat from American farms and we never use anything frozen. Unfortunately, sometimes we raise the price a little bit. It’s something we have to do to maintain the high quality.”

With beef and chicken prices starting to abate, the decision not to shortchange customers with lesser ingredients appears all the wiser.

Zankou Chicken’s ability to adapt, survive, and thrive when faced with recent industrywide challenges is good news for foodies in Southern California.

The Iskenderian family’s recipe of fresh ingredients, healthy food, delicious flavor, reasonable prices and great service will continue to be served to one generation after another of families throughout the region.

Hilton’s Arcadia hotel will pay homage to the community

R.D. Olson Construction broke ground on the Hilton Arcadia with hopes of serving the community and paying homage to its past.

The hotel was thoughtfully designed to make use of a preexisting office space and to provide scenic views of the nearby Santa Anita racetrack.

“The owners are committed to the community and they’re making a lot of decisions based on what’s in the community’s best interest,” said William Wilhelm, president and chief operating officer of R.D. Olson.

For this reason, the company will utilize the existing office space at the building at 123 W. Huntington Drive near the 210 freeway.

According to Wilhelm, this decision was made with the intention of cutting environmental and monetary costs. The structure has already been stripped down to its original shell and the company plans to use the framework for guest rooms, as well as a rooftop bar.

These 173 rooms will overlook parts of

the historical racetrack and even reference its 1930s art-deco design, but unlike other nearby hotels, Wilhelm mentioned the design team has intentionally thought of window placement to minimize the smells of the horses.

“We want this to be kind of a legacy project,” said project manager Steven Soo. As he explained, “The space is really meant for the community.” Not only will it represent the history of the area, it will also serve as a gathering place for local families to spend a night away or grab a bite for dinner.

Once completed, the property will be 138,000 square feet.

Over the next two years, R.D. Olson will be refurbishing the current structure and constructing a new tower for the hotel, which has plans to open in the summer 2025. Soo is also working on other hotel projects around Arcadia, and the locals are at the forefront of his plans.

“You’ve got a group of individuals who are committed to the community,” Wilhelm said. “And they’re taking that responsibility very seriously.”

R.D. Olson has also worked on the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, Fairmont Hotel in Newport Beach, Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach, the Irvine Spectrum Marriott and the Inn at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano.

Interim superintendent unveils 100-day plan

PUSD interim superintendent Elizabeth J. Blanco, Ed.D., released her 100-day plan that aims to put a new strategic plan into action, prioritize equity among students and continue work to support students furthest from opportunity.

The 100-day plan reflects her lifelong passion for social justice.

Blanco’s 100-day plan serves as the foundation for the first days of her tenure as interim superintendent and is based on the district’s newly adopted mission to empower every student to succeed. The goal is to make district operations more efficient and responsive to the needs of schools, students and employees. The plan

also focuses on creating a stronger system for district communication.

Prior to her appointment as interim superintendent, she was the deputy superintendent for PUSD, she oversaw the academics division, encompassing Pre-K-12 instruction, special education, multilingual programs, arts, gifted education, and college and career initiatives.

“Putting the strategic plan into operation is an opportunity to move our students, employees and families to a culture of ‘with’ that elevates their voices and makes our district more responsive to their needs,” Blanco said.

“Community engagement is at the heart of everything we do. In order to design and build a better future for PUSD, we have been working diligently to gather input from parents, students, teachers,

staff and all of our educational partners.

“This has been a team effort at every step along the way.”

The 100-Day Plan can be found at pusd. us/superintendent. A progress report will be shared at the conclusion of the 100 days with the board of education, PUSD leaders, staff and educational partners.

Students learn to manage conflicts

This year, in addition to academics, TK12 students in the Pasadena Unified School District are learning how to man-

age societal stressors and conflicts with their peers. They’re getting lessons in restorative practices and mediation as the impacts of the pandemic continue to affect the social and emotional well-being of young people across the country.

The program begins this school year and is part of a new partnership between PUSD and the Pasadena-based Western Justice Center to develop conflict resolution education and youth-driven programs that empower students to be advocates for peace and justice.

TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF BARBARA MARIE SPETH

Case No. 23STPB09173

To all heirs, beneficiar ies, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of BARBARA MARIE SPETH

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Erik Speth in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Erik Speth be appointed as personal representa tive to administer the estate of the decedent.

THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administra tion of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.

A HEARING on the petition will be held on Sept. 26, 2023 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 79 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.

IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your

appearance may be in person or by your attorney.

IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representa tive, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.

YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250.
