Busola Komolafe is an international awardwinning filmmaker, TV producer, and content specialist. She is the Senior Channels Manager at Paramount Africa, overseeing production and programming strategy for the Paramount Channel Brands (MTVBase, BET Africa, Comedy Central Nickelodeon) in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. As the Senior Channels Manager, understanding viewers’ distinct preferences and interests for MTV Base, BET Africa, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon is a significant part of her role.

Diversity is also a key focus, as Busola Komolafe and her team aim to offer content that resonates with African cultures.

Busola has a few feathers on her cap. As a filmmaker, her short film Phantom won the award for Best Short Film at the Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival and the Best Short Film award at the International World Film Awards. To say she is a woman of many talents is an understatement. Busola’s story is quite interesting; from being a presenter and producer at NTA to becoming the Senior Channels Manager at Paramount, the sky is her limit. See pages 8 to 10 for her story.

COCKTAIL ATTIRE

The invitation may say cocktail attire, but you might not know what that means if you’re attending a wedding, a night on a cruise ship, or your class reunion. This is due to the ever-evolving nature of fashion trends and the myriad of fashion jargon, including cocktail attire and black ties, which can make it challenging to stay current. Read on to learn more about what this means and what ladies should and shouldn’t wear to a cocktail party.

WHAT IS COCKTAIL ATTIRE?

Cocktail attire is essentially formal wear with a much more festive feel. It is slightly more formal than a typical casual dress but still more informal than office wear. If cocktail clothing is requested of you, it will usually be stated on the invitation. If it doesn’t, you should know that cocktail attire is typically appropriate for weddings, anniversaries, reunions, engagements, etc.

. AVOID SKIMPY DRESSES; PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HEMLINE

It’s important to remember that a cocktail party is not the same as a night out with your girlfriends. Avoid donning anything that draws undue attention to you, is transparent, or is sleazy. Would it be acceptable if someone wore the same dress to your party? You have “your” answer there. Keep an eye on your neckline and ensure they don’t plunge into oblivion.

2. DON’T WEAR BALL GOWNS; DO MIDISIZED DRESSES

Save those elegant ball gowns for your “Cinderella” moment. Fashion experts typically discourage gowns that trail out and about. Midi-length gowns make ideal cocktail attire for those who find shorter dresses uncomfortable. Regardless, your options here are unlimited.

3. AVOID JEANS; WEAR TROUSERS INSTEAD

Jeans may be your go-to piece for casual wear, but that doesn’t mean you can wear them to a cocktail party. They still do not fit into the formal clothing category or even have it as an option. Try pantsuits or stylish pants paired with a sophisticated silk or chiffon blouse. Wear pumps, a pearl necklace, and minimal makeup to complete the look.

5. STAY AWAY FROM OVERACCESSORISING; DO ONE STATEMENT PIECE

Accessorising your attire can significantly improve its appearance. Even a simple dress can look better with only one neckpiece. Choose an accessory from your collection that will make a statement and go well with your clothing. Too many items at once will make the ensemble look sloppy and unattractive, ruining the whole look. One statement piece needs to stick out. Although you could add more, keep it simple with delicate pieces like finger rings, bracelets, etc.

6. DON’T DO FLIP-FLOPS; WEAR HEELS OR PLATFORMS

It is indisputable that flip-flops are incredibly comfortable, and we all practically live in them. Except in rare cases, flipflops, boots, gladiators, flat sandals, etc., are not regarded as cocktail attire. Pumps, wedges, or platform heels are excellent shoe choices that improve your silhouette.

4. DON’T WEAR A CRUMPLED DRESS; CONSIDER DRY CLEANING OR STEAMING YOUR ATTIRE CONCLUSION

If you’re thinking about wearing a jumpsuit, pantsuit, or fancy pants, iron it out to avoid having an unflattering ensemble. Get your clothing steamironed by a dry cleaner if you are not skilled at pressing it yourself. Not having enough time is also not an excuse because you are usually given enough time to prepare for the event.

As you are aware, cocktail clothing for ladies is somewhat formal but also appropriate for a party. And we realise that styling it properly can be confusing. Avoid wearing see-through clothing, and don’t forget to dry clean or steam your clothes before wearing them. Make sure your hair is styled in a way that goes well with your fancy attire to finish the look. You’re set if you add a cute purse as an accessory to your dress. If necessary, test wearing them and the shoes and accessories the day before the celebration to ensure you feel at ease.

Little acts of kindness and love are a common way for couples to express their love and satisfaction in their relationship. Small acts, whether heartfelt or romantic, can change a relationship.

1. MAKE YOUR HELLO AND GOODBYES MEANINGFUL

During a romantic relationship, individuals frequently show each other small gestures, and as time passes, they seem to do less for each other. However, doing so may have the unintentional effect of weakening their relationship. Saying your “hello” and “goodbye” daily is an extremely easy way to maintain your relationship. Africa has 54 countries, 3,000 tribes, and about 1.2 billion people. It is rich in beautiful culture and stories. Over the years, several individuals and media outlets have recognised the value and distinctiveness of African stories. They are committed to placing them on a pedestal within the global community.

One of the people driving this movement is Busola Komolafe, an international award-winning filmmaker, TV producer, and content specialist. She is currently the Senior Channels Manager at Paramount Africa, in charge of production and programming strategy for the Paramount Channel Brands (MTVBase, BET Africa, Comedy Central Nickelodeon) in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Busola Komolafe’s leadership has been nothing short of revolutionary. Her devotion, vision, and strategic thinking have opened up new avenues for Paramount Africa.

With time, demands, and the changing prevailing culture of the continent, Paramount Africa’s dedication has taken on several forms.

First, African music and skills were brought to the attention of the world through an incredibly widespread music platform. Subsequently, it was by promoting the production and marketing of indigenous African entertainment, especially in the film and television sector. Currently, they are working towards translating well-known content worldwide into native languages.

One cannot overstate Paramount Africa’s influence on the media landscape. So far, they have succeeded in building launchpads that have elevated African voices, stories, and culture into the spotlight and platforms that have developed into safe havens for successful African creatives. They’ve done this by creating opportunities for talented people to become stars while keeping the integrity of their stories and spurring reform in the African film business.

In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Busola Komolafe discusses the intricacies of her role as the senior channels manager for Paramount Africa, the initiatives and programs Paramount Africa has implemented to support creatives in the media industry, and the impact of technology in adapting content to cater to diverse audiences across Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

As the Senior Channels Manager for Paramount Africa, how do you approach programming strategy for diverse channels like MTV Base, BET Africa, MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon?

In my role as Senior Channels Manager for Paramount Africa, each channel caters to a unique audience, so we try to understand viewers’ distinct preferences and interests for MTV Base, BET Africa, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon. Combining market research, audience feedback, and industry trends, we curate a programming strategy, ensuring each channel remains relevant and engaging. Diversity is a key focus, and we aim to offer a variety of content that resonates with the diverse cultures across Africa. For instance, when it

comes to MTV Base, we closely monitor trends in African music, collaborate with artists and producers, and leverage social media analytics to curate a lineup that resonates with our youthful audience. By featuring African artists and showcasing vibrant music culture, we ensure that MTV Base remains the go-to destination for contemporary African music enthusiasts.

In overseeing programming strategy, what key factors do you consider when selecting or renewing shows for channels like MTV Base, BET Africa, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon?

Several factors come into play when selecting or renewing shows. We carefully analyse the show’s performance metrics and audience ratings to understand its impact and relevance. Additionally, we

also consider cultural sensitivities and preferences specific to each channel’s target demographic.

Collaborating with other talented content professionals is crucial to identifying high-quality shows, and staying abreast of industry innovations helps us curate a fresh lineup. Ultimately, chosen shows align with Paramount Africa’s overall programming strategy, whether focusing on African productions or fostering specific genres popular within the region.

Paramount Africa has been successful in nurturing female talents. Can you share specific initiatives or programs you’ve implemented to support and promote women in the industry?

Paramount Africa is deeply committed to empowering women in the entertainment industry. I am thrilled to highlight some of the innovative initiatives we’ve implemented to support and promote female talent.

A cornerstone of our efforts is the introduction of dedicated programming blocks such as “Queens of Afrobeat” and “Queens of Base” on MTV Base. These platforms serve as powerful showcases for female artists, providing them with the recognition they truly deserve.

The MTV VJ Search has also been instrumental in discovering some of the most influential female talents in the industry today and giving women a platform to shine, including Stephanie Coker and Ada’ Folu Storms’ Ogunkeye. Additionally, we recently welcomed Oluchi Harrison as the newest member of the Paramount Culture Squad. This dynamic group of young, brilliant minds is passionate about pushing the boundaries of African culture across various spheres. Through initiatives like these, we strive to identify and empower emerging talents, offering them opportunities to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and thrive within the industry.

But our commitment to gender diversity doesn’t end there. We’ve revamped our music blocks to ensure more inclusivity, with a special emphasis on highlighting female artists. This deliberate move reflects our belief in providing equal opportunities for all voices to be heard.

Some of our shows with huge female casts emphasise the importance of women’s strength. The reality show Unstoppable Thabooty on BET follows media personality Thando Thabete as she tries to balance multiple careers and maintain close relationships. Also, Queendom, set to air in April on BET, celebrates women’s doggedness and resilience, explores themes of fate and power struggles, patriarchy and aggressively celebrates heritage and tradition.

In line with our commitment to talent development, through the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, the Talent Accelerator Program — a platform created to invest in young, emerging female creatives. The initiative saw the selection of 11 outstanding young women to work across different departments through the filming of MTV Shuga season 5. We didn’t stop there; The popular MTV Shuga down south recently provided opportunities for 18 aspiring graduate interns interested in forging a career in entertainment.

During the production of In Bloom, 60% of the cast and crew were Women, both in front of and behind the lens, creating an environment where their voices are valued, respected, and celebrated. These initiatives not only showcase our dedication to promoting gender equality in the industry but also underscore our belief in the transformative power of women’s voices. At Paramount Africa, we’re not just championing talent; we’re igniting a movement towards a more inclusive and equitable entertainment landscape.

How do you ensure Paramount Africa stays innovative and competitive in the evolving TV landscape?

At Paramount Africa, we are committed to telling authentic African stories by continuously adapting to the evolving landscape and staying in tune with audience preferences. We achieve this by focusing on producing compelling content that resonates with our audience, ensuring that we meet their expectations and maintain our competitive edge. We also embrace innovation and closely monitor emerging technologies and trends to explore new opportunities for growth and engagement.

Ultimately, our goal is to continue delivering high-quality and impactful content that captivates viewers and reinforces Paramount Africa’s position as a leading player in the industry.

As a content specialist, what traits do you believe are crucial for success in the dynamic world of TV? Success in TV requires a combination of strategic thinking, adaptability, and creativity. It is important to anticipate and respond to changing audience preferences. Creativity in content creation and problem-solving is essential for staying ahead. Effective communication and collaboration with a diverse team are also vital, as is a commitment to continuous learning to keep abreast of industry advancements and emerging technologies. There are many things involved; it’s important to have a good blend of all of them.

What challenges have you faced in the African Creative Industry, and how do you see them evolving in the future?

The African creative scene is growing, but hurdles still exist. Funding can be tough to find, and sometimes, people don’t quite see the value of creative work. This means artists might not get the recognition or support they deserve.

However, Paramount has played a pivotal role by providing platforms like the MTV Africa Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and the BET Awards to recognise and celebrate African talent. From Wizkid’s historic win in 2011 to Rema’s recent achievement in 2023, these accolades highlight the global impact of African artists and their contributions to the music industry.

Paramount’s commitment to promoting black excellence and culture extends beyond awards ceremonies. Artists like 2Face, D’banj, Wizkid, Ice Prince, Davido, Burna Boy, Sarkodie, Libianca and Tems have all left their mark on the BET awards, further solidifying Africa’s presence in the international music scene.

Paramount’s impact in the entertainment landscape, providing talents with expression platforms, undoubtedly underscores its unwavering dedication to excellence, empowerment and innovation.

What advice do you have for budding filmmakers and content creators looking to break into the industry?

My advice for aspiring filmmakers and content creators is to be persistent, embrace learning, and build a diverse skill set. Network actively within the industry, seek mentorship and never underestimate the power of collaboration. Keep abreast of industry trends, technologies, and audience preferences. Most importantly, believe in your unique perspective and storytelling abilities. The journey may have challenges, but perseverance, continuous improvement, and a genuine passion for storytelling will set you on the path to success.

Are there specific reality shows currently running on Paramount Africa that you find particularly exciting or impactful?

I particularly loved the just-concluded MTV Base

Inside Life: The New Wave, which followed the lives of three rising music stars. It offered an unparalleled glimpse into the struggles and resilience of the Nigerian youth and how much hard work they put into their craft. It presented a reality that otherwise goes ignored. The show provided a platform to learn beyond the glitz and glam the media world presents the realities and grit of celebrity life. Shows like these are fun to watch and offer interesting insights into real-life situations and the music industry. We are currently working on another one called Ghosted, an MTV international Franchise we are localising for Nigeria; I can’t wait for our audience to see that show.

How do you see the future of reality shows in the African entertainment landscape?

With the rise of online platforms, creators can reach more people and make money from their work. Imagine a future where African creativity is everywhere! By working together, both governments and stakeholders can help artists thrive. This means creating laws that protect artists’ ideas and encouraging more people to appreciate African art, music, and stories. I’m optimistic about the future of the African creative industry.

Can you share some of your experiences as a presenter and producer at NTA and FRCN and how they shaped your career?

My time as a presenter and producer at NTA and FRCN is invaluable as this is where it all began at age 19. The experience shaped the future of my career. These roles allowed me to hone my presentation and production skills while building a deep understanding of broadcasting. These experiences laid the foundation for my multifaceted career, instilled in me the importance of versatility and adaptability, and helped me become the woman I am today.

As someone passionate about authentic visual storytelling, how do you balance meeting audience expectations and pushing creative boundaries?

Balancing audience expectations with pushing creative boundaries is a delicate process. While respecting audience preferences, I believe in challenging norms and introducing innovative storytelling formats. Engaging in research and audience feedback helps us understand viewer expectations, enabling us to infuse creativity within those parameters. Collaborating with

As the industry continues to evolve, reality shows will likely diversify in genres and formats, catering to the varied interests of the African audience. I’ve worked on a few of them in the past, and it’s nice to see the industry grow. Inside Life: The New Wave, for example, was a different approach to reality TV, and I’m immensely proud of the team and what they were able to achieve. Viewers were taken into the world of their favourite artists and what it took to become them. The key is to strike a balance between entertainment, cultural relevance, and inclusivity, ensuring that reality shows remain a vibrant and integral part of the African entertainment experience.

What strategies do you employ to discover and nurture emerging industry talents?

At Paramount Africa, we employ a multifaceted approach to discover and nurture emerging industry talents through initiatives like the MTV VJ Search now known as the Paramount Culture Squad. The MTV VJ Search has been instrumental in unearthing some of the most popular on-screen talents today, including Ehizojie’ Ehiz’ Okoeguale, Stephanie Coker, and Ada’ Folu Storms’ Ogunkeye.

More recently, we announced Oluchi Harrison as the newest member of the Paramount Culture Squad. The Culture Squad is a dynamic group of young, brilliant minds passionate about pushing the boundaries of African culture across various spheres. By providing platforms like these, we aim to identify and empower emerging talents, giving them opportunities to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and grow within the industry. Our talent discovery strategies go beyond just onair personalities. We actively seek out and nurture talents in various creative fields, including music, film, fashion, and more. Through partnerships, competitions, and mentorship programs, we strive to create an ecosystem that supports and elevates the next generation of industry leaders. Ultimately, our goal is to foster an environment where emerging talents thrive.

Phantom won the Best Short Film award at the Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival. Can you share the creative process behind the film and how you approached storytelling in the short format to make it stand out?

Phantom also won Best Short Film at the International World Film Awards. Creating Phantom was a unique challenge and an immensely rewarding experience. The creative process involved meticulous planning, from script development to production and postproduction. The short format demanded precision in storytelling, so every scene and dialogue carried significance. I believe it was important to talk about the importance of mental health from a Nigerian perspective and how it is so often overlooked, and I’m proud of the results. It follows the struggles of a released kidnap victim who is still mentally in bondage and how she tries to overcome the trauma that followed. The aim is to shed more light on the difficulties of mental illness and how to overcome them. I focused on a compelling narrative that captures the core of your emotions.

Short films often pose unique challenges in conveying a compelling narrative within a limited timeframe. How did you navigate these challenges while ensuring the emotional impact and thematic depth of Phantom remained intact?

It required a meticulous approach. I prioritised a strong and concise narrative that conveyed the core themes effectively. The actors played a crucial role, allowing emotions and messages to be communicated efficiently. The collaboration with a talented crew and thoughtful editing ensured that every moment contributed to the emotional impact of Phantom. It was essential to strike a balance between brevity and depth, and the film’s success in maintaining both aspects validated the creative choices made during its production.

In overseeing programming strategy, how do you adapt content to cater to diverse audiences across Nigeria and the rest of Africa?  In overseeing programming strategy, Paramount prioritises the adaptation of content to cater to diverse audiences across Nigeria and the rest of Africa. We leverage technology across all our brands to gain valuable insights into audience preferences and behaviours through social media listening tools and insights backed by research. This data empowers us to create content that resonates with our viewers and drives meaningful engagement.

Dedicated to understanding the evolving needs and preferences of our audiences, we conducted an Insight Study titled “Reflecting Me: Representation on Screen” in 2021, which was updated in 2023. Spanning 73 countries, including Nigeria, this study surveyed over 2.5 million individuals to explore the impact of onscreen representation and the demand for greater diversity and authenticity in media. The findings reinforced our commitment to accurate and authentic representation, promoting inclusivity, breaking down perception barriers, and providing inspiring role models for our viewers.

Our commitment to representing Africa’s diverse cultures and experiences is evident in our reality TV shows tailored to specific markets. Programs such as Inside Life and short-form GenZ Code on MTVBASE, Isono and Redemption on BET Africa, and multilingual telenovelas offer a platform for African talent to shine while authentically reflecting the nuances and complexities of different communities. Through our programming, we aim to foster a sense of belonging, self-esteem, and confidence among viewers, challenging stereotypes and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

Additionally, we prioritise accessibility by dubbing content into local languages and providing subtitles. The isiZulu-dubbed adaptation of SpongeBob SquarePants on Nickelodeon exemplifies our commitment to cultural representation and inclusivity, amplifying diverse voices and celebrating cultural richness. Furthermore, the upcoming launch of the isiZulu adaptation of PAW PATROL on NickToons, 18 March 2024 demonstrates our dedication to expanding accessibility and representation across diverse audiences.

By conducting research-driven insights, and offering culturally resonant programming, Paramount Africa continues to set the standard for inclusive and impactful media content

across Nigeria and the wider African continent.

What personal traits or habits do you think have contributed most to your success in your career?

Knowing what my vision and purpose is has kept me grounded in staying the course and never giving up. Perseverance and resilience have been crucial during challenging times. Adaptability and a willingness to embrace change and innovation have allowed me to stay ahead.

Effective communication within the team and with stakeholders has fostered collaboration and creativity. Additionally, continuous learning and an insatiable curiosity about industry trends and technologies have been instrumental in shaping my career.

Looking back at your journey, is there a particular project or achievement that stands out as the most rewarding for you?

While every project holds a special place, the international recognition I received from my film, Phantom is one that stands out just because it was rated on an international level. Apart from the two awards in the bag. (Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival and International World Film Awards) It was also nominated for awards in New York and Los Angeles. It was a collaborative effort of a dedicated team and the fulfilment of a creative vision. This achievement validated the storytelling approach and reinforced the potential for African narratives to make a name on the international stage.

Can you share any go-to beauty or makeup essentials you swear by, especially when preparing for public appearances or important events?

I prioritise skincare. Starting with a good moisturiser and sunscreen is nonnegotiable for me. My routine is not complete without sunscreen.

I swear by a nicely blended foundation that enhances natural features and a versatile eyeshadow palette for a polished yet nude/clean look. I love my up do’s for hair, because it make my face pop. It’s important to feel confident and comfortable in your appearance, and these go-to beauty essentials have been reliable companions for me.

Beyond your professional endeavours, what hobbies or interests do you pursue in your personal life?

I find joy in travelling. It’s a passion that allows me to immerse myself in diverse cultures and gain new perspectives. Travel enhances my creativity and opens my mind. I also enjoy binge-watching psychological thriller movies or series. The human mind is fascinating. I love great conversations and meeting people. I also have a passion for God. Without His direction and steady guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

BUT YOU ARE ALSO THE SOLUTION SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE PROBLEM,

Lastweek, I spoke about how we need to take responsibility for the roles we play in the misfortune that sometimes happens in our lives. However, acknowledging the problem and taking accountability is only half the solution. Once you identify it, that’s when the real work truly starts: Self-reflection and introspection.

that’s what I think from what I’ve experienced myself and through observation.

We need to realise we have agency and power over our thoughts, actions, and choices. While external factors undoubtedly influence our circumstances, our responses to these factors shape our reality. Recognising our role as both the problem and the solution empowers us to take proactive steps towards growth and flourishing.

I’m no expert, but here are some ways we can navigate this journey:

Self-awareness And Mindfulness:

Understanding yourself at every level is so important. Self-awareness allows us to recognise patterns of behaviour that may be holding us back and empowers us to make conscious choices aligned with our values and aspirations. Being present in each moment allows us to break free from destructive thought patterns and respond to challenges with clarity and composure, but most of all, without judgement.

Accountability And Continuous Learning:

Remember, if you want a healthy life, you have to be willing to do healthy things. So the real question is, are you ready for that work? Are you willing to do what it takes to get the solutions you require and deserve? And if your answer is no and you aren’t, that’s also fine; whenever you wake up is your morning. No one can force you to see it; no one can force you to be ready. You have to be fully convinced of something before acting on it with the conviction required to make a change. At least,

Accepting accountability fosters personal growth and strengthens relationships by building trust and integrity. Embrace a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities for learning and development. Seek knowledge, acquire new skills, and remain open to feedback and constructive criticism.

Self-Care And Setting Boundaries:

We should prioritise activities that replenish our energy. Learn to say no to commitments or relationships that drain your energy and prioritise activities that align with your priorities and values.

Sometimes, the urge to assess my life arrives without warning, a gentle yet unmistakable whisper from somewhere deep within. It’s not tethered to a particular date or dictated by some external calendar event. Instead, it’s an intuitive, organic summons that calls for a pause and a turning inward. This feeling often emerges in mid-March, like clockwork, bringing with it a subtle yet insistent sense of urgency.

CURATED CHAOS

A QUIET REBELLION

This isn’t about the societal pressure to set resolutions or the relentless selfimprovement chatter that seems to peak at the start of a new year. It’s something far more personal, a quiet rebellion against simply allowing time to slip away unheeded. It’s a recognition that true growth doesn’t neatly align with dates on a calendar. Instead, it follows its own rhythm, its own subtle but undeniable timeline.

There’s a distinct quality to this call to reflection. It’s both a tender invitation and a steadfast reminder. It invites me to honour the journey thus far and to look back with both compassion and honesty. Yet, it’s also a reminder that life is fleeting and complacency is my greatest enemy. This feeling, this gentle nudge, is my inner compass, guiding me back to what fundamentally matters.

The past twelve months haven’t played out like a suspenseful movie, filled with twists and turns or easily defined climaxes. Instead, life has seemed to move at a more deliberate pace, punctuated by ordinary days and quiet routines. It’s in those unassuming moments, the ones that might fade into the background if I’m not paying attention, that the most meaningful shifts occur.

The changes, at first glance, may seem slight. A new perspective gained from a thoughtprovoking book. A flash of courage when confronted with self-doubt. A deepened sense of empathy sparked by a shared story. These moments might not register as monumental, but their significance becomes undeniable when they accumulate over time.

That’s the thing about growth; it’s often incremental and almost imperceptible in the day-to-day. It’s only when I look back, comparing who I am now to the person I was last March, that the evolution becomes clear. Yet, even with that awareness, a question lingers: Have I used this

time to become a better version of myself? Have I expanded my capacity for compassion, for learning, for living with intention? These aren’t questions with easy, neatly packaged answers, but they lie at the heart of what a truly examined life means to me.

The ‘pillars of life’ concept acts as my guiding star. It breaks down the complexities of living fully into critical areas: mind, body, spirit, relationships, finances, and impact. This framework not only helps me identify where my life flourishes but also mercilessly exposes the areas where I might be falling short. This process of self-inquiry is inherently challenging. I must confront difficult truths, whether it’s a stagnant mind in need of stimulation, a body deprived of proper care, or a spirit longing for deeper meaning. It forces me to ask: Am I prioritising growth in ways that align with my desire for a deeply fulfilling life? Do I seek knowledge, or have I become complacent and incurious? Do I feel healthy and alive or merely going through the motions? Am I driven by a sense of purpose or simply drifting from one obligation to the next?

The pillars also compel me to look outward. Do I feel the love, support, and true connection of my community, and am I actively giving those gifts back in equal measure? Do I manage my finances responsibly, using them as a tool for security and also for generosity? Am I finding meaningful ways, both big and small, to leave a positive impact on the world around me?

These aren’t one-time questions but rather touchstones I return to for continuous realignment. These pillars provide a structure for celebrating successes and coursecorrecting with intention. They remind me that a welllived life is a multifaceted mosaic, constantly evolving and demanding my conscious attention.

The reality is, my life pillars are in a constant state of flux. Sometimes, it feels as though I’ve finally found a sense of stability, only to be met with a new challenge that reveals areas of vulnerability. Just when my

relationship with my body feels strong, my financial goals may need attention. During seasons of intellectual expansion, my sense of spiritual belonging might falter.

The beauty lies in the understanding that this dynamic is not only natural but also vital. Those wobbly pillars aren’t failures; they are signals pointing me toward where I need to focus my energy and dedication. It’s both a humbling and a deeply empowering process. To see where I fall short, yet instead of shame, feel the motivation to do better. To acknowledge the hard-fought gains I’ve made, not as reasons to settle but reminders of my capacity for progress.

Why wait for some arbitrary point on the calendar to dictate when I should strive for a better life? Why surrender my agency to the illusion that a fresh start requires confetti or champagne? The real power, the transformative shift, comes from deciding, right here, right now, that I choose growth. I choose to live with purpose.

This isn’t about vague promises or grand gestures. It’s about a steadfast commitment to the everyday choices that collectively determine the quality of my experience. I will prioritise learning, forever staying a student of this wild and wondrous world. TAGINE

Originating from Morocco, Tagine is a traditional North African dish named after the earthenware pot in which it is cooked. This tasty slow-cooked stew contains a blend of spices, tender meat, seasonal vegetables, and dried fruits. If you are looking to try something new in the kitchen, then this article is what you need to start.

Ingredients

• 1 to 1.5 pounds (450 to 675 grams) of meat (chicken, lamb, or beef), cut into chunks

• 2 onions, finely chopped

• 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced

• 2-3 tomatoes, chopped

• 1 preserved lemon, sliced (optional)

• 1/2 cup of green olives (optional)

• 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil

• 2 teaspoons of ground cumin

• 2 teaspoons of ground ginger

• 2 teaspoons of paprika

Damsel

Amedievalword with a highly specific (but often misused) meaning, “damsel” describes a young, unmarried lady-in-waiting.

It’s also the broad title given many a helpless heroine in Hollywood movies — the proverbial “damsel in distress,” trussed to the train tracks or otherwise waiting to be saved. Elodie is neither of those in Netflix’s pleasantly disruptive fantasy story, which places Enola Holmes star Millie Bobby Brown squarely in control of her fate.

A revisionist fairy tale in which Elodie is hastily married off and served up as dragon chow to satisfy a generations-old curse, Damsel treats Elodie as an action hero for our less genderrigid times. The loud-and-clear message, achieved by eliminating “distress” from the title is (though it’s still an essential part of the formula): Passive damsels be damned! Here’s a woman who can fend for herself!

The eldest daughter of one Lord Bayford (Ray Winstone), kindly patriarch of a cash-strapped land, Elodie first appears with her hair and makeup neatly in place. She’s ready to pose for a royal portrait if she cared about such things (she’s more inclined to bow hunting and horseback riding). By the end of the tale, she’s charred and scarred, her dress dirty and torn to shreds, having endured a Die Hard-level gauntlet of dangers. (Technically, Elodie survived much worse, as tough guy Bruce Willis didn’t have to contend with a firebreathing reptile. Like John Rambo, she can sew her own wounds.)

Elodie isn’t so much a damsel as she is a maiden, and she’s hardly the first who can get by without being rescued by a man. Rather, she’s the latest — and arguably the most resourceful — in a cycle that began with Disney’s Frozen a few years back. Now, after Hulu’s The Princess and Netflix’s own Nimona, helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Damsel demonstrates how a genre that young people have enjoyed for a century needn’t be exclusively centred on boys.

In Dan Mazeau’s script, even the antagonists are women: Robin Wright, whose dastardly Queen Isabelle subverts the precious Buttercup she played in The Princess Bride, and Shohreh Aghdashloo, whose smoky voice seems an ideal fit for the fire-breathing dragon. There’s another obvious advantage to giving this fearsome CG creature the power of speech. Doing so explains how the dragon established the pact with a long-ago king (Matt Slack) who has called for so many royal sacrifices. But it also means that clever Elodie can reason with the beast. One doesn’t necessarily need brute strength to slay — or sway — a dragon.

In its idyllic opening stretch, the movie serves up the usual kind of romantic wish fulfilment. Sure, this is an arranged marriage, but the prince (Nick Robinson) is charming

enough, and the wedding dress looks just dreamy. Still, something is clearly off in the kingdom of Aurea, and just before the wedding, Elodie’s stepmother (Angela Bassett) starts to worry … with good reason. The night of the ceremony, Elodie is carried up the mountain behind the castle and tossed down a large dark chasm.

At the bottom, she finds abandoned shoes and broken tiaras — evidence of her actual fate. How many brides have been offered to the dragon through the ages? In one of the movie’s effective scenes, Elodie finds a spot the dragon can’t reach, and there she discovers a wall where a dozen or so previous princesses wrote their names. They also left a map, sharing what they’ve learned with future victims. It’s an inspired show of solidarity in this umpteenth update on the Bluebeard folktale, which Fresnadillo makes literal by having the camera pan around the cave to reveal the wives who came before.

So many Netflix offerings look barely polished enough for the small screen. But every so often, one arrives with an all-star cast, lavish production values and the kind of creative oversight (by veteran producers who came up through the studio system) committed to making movies, as opposed to “content.” Damsel belongs to that old-fashioned tradition, even if its message feels totally contemporary. For his part, Fresnadillo immerses audiences in Elodie’s predicament through a balance of practical and digital effects, including huge jets of fire that singe at her heels but never quite catch up.

What matters most is whether we believe Brown in the role, and the Stranger Things star has no trouble embodying the kind of quick-thinking independent mind it takes to survive such an adventure. The movie doesn’t reveal too much of her personality before that first twist, though Elodie is shown drawing mazes in her spare time — a skill that comes in handy when trying to navigate the cavernous depths. Her only tools are a brass dagger stitched into her bodice and a bejewelled orb that serves as a lamp. If MacGyver could make do with that, so can she.

In classic tales, damsels spend their time learning to be ladies. Elodie bypasses all of that, using her intelligence to uncover the secret explanation of these horrific sacrifices, which could be read as centuries of what-they-don’t-tell-you patriarchal control. Deliciously improper at times, Damsel adheres to codes that can feel a bit calculated, less organic than crafted in response to a newly progressive corporate agenda (the signs are there at all levels, from inclusive casting to occasionally self-righteous dialogue). However, role models like Elodie remain all too rare, and if the movie changes the way young women say the word “damsel” going forward — no longer daintily, but with a growl — then it’s moved the needle.

WATCH OF THE WEEK

THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR

Wes Anderson’s brand of straight-faced weirdness can be an acquired taste, but the accomplished writer-director finds a hospitable outlet for his sense of whimsy in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a 39-minute adaptation of the Roald Dahl story. He also finds the right outfit to bankroll that on awards-hungry Netflix, which surely had visions of Oscar nominations when releasing it (it won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film!) dancing in its head.

Anderson previously brought his breezy touch to Dahl with the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox in 2009, and Henry Sugar is to be followed by three shorter shorts: The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison, each running about 17 minutes.

Like Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest too-cute movie that premiered last year before landing on streaming, and The French Dispatch before that, the director’s reputation remains a magnet for big-name talent, with Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character and Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, and Dev Patel fleshing out the cast.

Rather than acting and interacting, in Henry Sugar, those characters essentially take turns reading portions of Dahl’s story amid shifting

pastel backdrops (the Wes Anderson trademark) that illustrate the tale, creating

a lovely picture book.

The vaguely hypnotic aspect of that well serves a story without much (or really, any) meat to it. It tells how Henry Sugar mastered the art of seeing without his eyes, initially intent on using that to cheat at gambling. Yet the skill and the winnings at the local casino that go with it yield a sort of spiritual epiphany.

Henry Sugar is considered slightly more adult in tone than some of Dahl’s best-known stories – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda (which Netflix recently featured in musical form) among them.

Ultimately, the mix of marquee names, relatively bite-sized format and Netflix as a platform feels like an ideal marriage of talent, material and distribution – a better combination, frankly, than Anderson’s last few movies. Then again, when it comes to prestige directors, fans have a way of seeing with their hearts more than their eyes.
