hey say too much of a good thing is bad for you. The same is true for those using retinol. While this is regarded as a miraculous beauty treatment, too much of it can thin out the skin, which could then make your skin susceptible to ageing. 6 TIPS TO PREVENT AND TREAT RETINOL BURN OR DAMAGE

etinol offers various advantages and is frequently regarded as the pinnacle of skincare products. It helps to prevent the development and emergence of fine lines and wrinkles, promotes the synthesis of new skin cells, clears clogged pores, exfoliates, and enhances collagen production. It is a miraculous multitasker because of all those benefits. The formulations and strengths range from prescription-strength to over-thecounter, and it is available in various forms, such as serums and moisturisers. One has to question whether it’s possible to have too much of a good thing with that kind of popularity. Find out if there is such a thing as too much retinol.

Now that you’re familiar with the potential side effects, let’s explore how to prevent and alleviate retinol-induced irritation.

(1) START SLOWLY

Begin with a lower concentration and gradually increase it as your skin adapts. Patience is your ally.

WHAT IS RETINOL? One of the most well-known vitamin A derivatives, retinol, is recognised for regulating skin cell turnover and promoting collagen production. This aids in improving the tone and texture of the skin, reducing discolouration and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, using retinol can help in clearing up pimples and blemishes. Retinol belongs to the class of medications known as retinoids, frequently prescribed to treat acne.

(2) HYDRATE RELIGIOUSLY

(2) INCREASED SENSITIVITY

Combat dryness by using a hydrating moisturiser both day and night.

Your skin can become more vulnerable to environmental stressors like UV rays.

(3) SUNSCREEN IS A MUST Shield your skin from UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days.

(4) AVOID HARSH PRODUCTS

HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE When properly used, retinol, the age-defying skincare superhero, can do wonders for your complexion. Dosage and frequency management are crucial to maximise its advantages while minimising drawbacks. If you’re just getting started with retinol, start with a low concentration—generally between 0.25% and 0.5%. This lessens the possibility of discomfort while allowing your skin to adapt softly. If you’re an experienced user, you can choose higher concentrations, but always seek a dermatologist’s opinion for specific recommendations. Using retinol nightly might be too much for some skin types, especially initially. Begin by applying it 2-3 times a week, gradually increasing as your skin builds tolerance. If you experience excessive dryness or irritation, dial back the frequency or use it every other night.

THE PERILS OF OVERUSE

Steer clear of harsh exfoliants and alcohol-based toners while using retinol. They can exacerbate irritation.

(3) BREAKOUTS Paradoxically, overusing retinol can lead to acne flares as your skin struggles to cope with the irritation.

(4) EXCESSIVE DRYNESS

Redness, peeling, and burning sensations can occur, especially if you skip the gradual introduction.

While incorporating retinol into your routine, use less of other active substances for skin care, such as acids or potent serums.

(6) CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST If irritation persists or worsens, consult a dermatologist. They can recommend suitable products or adjust your regimen to minimise discomfort.

Your skin may feel dry and flaky, which is unpleasant and ugly.

CONCLUSION

Overusing retinol can lead to adverse effects, including:

(1) IRRITATION

(5) LIMIT OTHER ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

(5) HYPER PIGMENTATION

Increased skin pigmentation can occasionally result from overusing retinol.

Retinol is a remarkable addition to your skincare arsenal when used wisely. Finding the right balance of dosage and frequency, being mindful of potential side effects, and following these preventative measures will help you achieve the youthful, radiant skin you desire without the dreaded retinol burn. Patience and consistency are your best allies on this journey to healthier skin.

COVER “Versatility is also a must, as beauty is not one track. An artist must be fuelled by passion, hard work, and creativity. Over time, confidence is improved, and they are then able to hold their own even in a saturated industry” Can you share a memorable moment from your early days as a makeup artist that shaped your career? In the early days, I’d travel a lot to the north. Met and became friends with a lot of celebrities and politicians. It was how kind and gracious they all were. On one occasion, my makeup box got trampled on the tarmac, and I lost everything. My host paid me back thousands of dollars to replace everything I lost. Her kindness has stayed with me until today, and I fondly remember that moment. How did the idea for a makeup line come about, and what was the journey like from concept to reality? I’d started this thing in Unilag (University of Lagos). I was making people up and doing their hair when they had parties. So I became popular for this. I charged for my time and skill, and in my 2nd year, my boyfriend asked why I hadn’t made it a formal business. I was just happy to get paid and put it in savings then. So I listened and coined a name (after suggestions from him and my mum). We have evolved over time, with many facets to the business. Your makeup line has over 40 products. Which one do you consider your personal favourite and why? Our foundations, pressed powders, primers and pencils. I can’t pick one item. They make the art of makeup easy and fulfilling because they solve huge problems. Our foundations, for example, conceal to give a very flawless appearance to skin. It’s so amazing—the same thing with the pressed powders. What strategies or values have helped you maintain BMPRO’s success in such a competitive industry over the years? We solve problems- once I identify a gap in the beauty routines of our clients, I work tirelessly to fill it. For example, our new duo liner and mascara set to launch. One package that packs a punch. I’ve worked with lots of brands over the years, and once I find something is lacking, we go on to create a BMPRO version - an improved quality of an existing product made to cater to our peculiarities. As an artist, my first-hand experience is an asset. I’m driven by passion and imagination, and I just want to create beauty. As a makeup artist, you’ve worked with numerous clients. Is there a particular transformation or makeover that stands out as your proudest achievement? Working with Olori Sekinat Elegushi these days is a favourite. Always wellcurated for every project. Her features transform under my artistry, and it’s always a pleasure to see. Every look is inspirational.

Back when I worked with Nigeria’s First Lady- Dame Patience Jonathan. Her beauty came through with my artistry. BMPRO makeup curates beauty on faces that are otherwise ordinary. This beauty then endears them to the public. Features are enhanced and portrayed stunningly.

BMPRO has a training school. What qualities do you look for in aspiring makeup artists, and what do you hope they gain from your training programs? We instil discipline and confidence in our artists. The road to that is to ensure they become very skilled in creating beauty. Versatility is also a must, as beauty is not one track. An artist must be fuelled by passion, hard work, and creativity. Over time, confidence is improved, and they are then able to hold their own even in a saturated industry. The beauty industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of trends and keep your makeup line and services relevant? We are a stamp of unrivalled quality. This has always been our watchword. No matter what, beauty services will always be needed, and BMPRO is there to provide top-notch quality. Our patrons enjoy this. They know that with BMPRO makeup they will stand out. Can you share some advice for aspiring makeup artists who are just starting their careers in today’s beauty industry? There must not be any room for mediocrity. The beauty industry, though seemingly saturated, has room for lots more talent. Bring something to the table. Strive for perfection. Don’t hope to serve every Tom, Dick and Harry. Carve your circle and serve them very, very well. Do not expect loyalty. Do not be too emotional with your clients. Just as beauty is fickle and fades, life will always come to you in cycles. Adapt well and move when you have to.

long time ago. Now, all I do is think about the next lip colour or eye shadow I plan to use and leave my agency to deal with scheduling, financing and legal. My support on the home front, too, is super amazing. What do you believe is the most exciting aspect of the beauty industry right now, and why? As a makeup designer, research technology and AI is doing a lot. When I go to our factories abroad, I’m so blown away by what’s happening. I’m excited to be bringing them home to Nigeria and can’t wait to see how it plays out. Do you also do makeup for movies, or is your expertise primarily focused on glamorous makeup? My focus is on the glamorous and beautiful side of makeup artistry. Set life can be very tedious, and I have realised I prefer the exhilaration of creating beauty to working in the movie industry. Can you name a makeup trend that you predict will be big in the upcoming year, and why do you think it will gain popularity? Glowing Glossy Makeup. Started with skin, and now we are on to cheeks. Brows are in, and eyes should be perfected soon. There’s been a growing emphasis on inclusivity and diversity in the beauty industry. How do you think this has impacted the industry, and what role does BMPRO play in this? Our full filter foundations and powders cover a wide spectrum of skin colours and tones. We plan to continue to expand. We also have makeup that completely covers problem areas (BMPRO veil and BMPRO concealers), albinism vitiligo, hirsutism, scars etc. I have worked with thousands of diverse women, and as I said, anytime I identify a gap in the availability of products, I get to work with our factories and design products. With our products, we have been able to create stunning beauty and the wearers’ confidence skyrockets. It’s such a joy to witness.

“I’ve worked with lots of brands over the years, and once I find something is lacking, we go on to create a BMPRO version - an improved quality of an existing product made to cater to our peculiarities.”

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a CEO and founder of a beauty empire like BMPRO, and how do you overcome those challenges? I realised early on that I’m an artist first before a business manager. So getting a team to manage the business was one of the best decisions I made. As I have a lot of acquaintances and friends, this always interfered with the progress of the business. So I separated this a very

“Create your signature, and don’t be swayed by trends and what other people are doing. Don’t ever think the grass is greener in other people’s yards- it’s probably sand in there. Water your own grass!”

When you’re not working on makeup, what’s your favourite way to unwind and find inspiration outside of the beauty world? Travel. I love to explore the world - culture food and listen to Music non-stop. As a successful entrepreneur, can you share a key lesson or piece of wisdom you’ve learned on your journey with aspiring business owners? Always strive for perfection in whatever you do. Also, appreciate the people who support your business and love on them hundred percent. What role does makeup play in empowering individuals and boosting their confidence? A LOT. And the ability to apply it on oneself and do a good job? Priceless. We are planning a lot of DIY training classes this new quarter. Even if it’s one thing you know how to do well, pat yourself on the back and let it shine through. Can you share some of your long-term goals for BMPRO Makeup Group and where you see the brand in the future? The plan is to expand globally. Be available to every woman worldwide, unstopped by

We also get the occasional notification of dissatisfaction, and this helps us to go back to the drawing board to make our formula better. Finally, what’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received in your career that you’d like to pass on to others aspiring to make it in the beauty industry? Don’t care what people think. MAKING THE BEST OUT OF RICE LEFTOVERS BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA Known for its deliciousness, rice is one of Nigerian homes’ most consumed food menus. It is a comfort food and a great go-to solution for something homey, but it is also very easy to make too much of it, and the only thing more frustrating than having excess rice is figuring out what to do with it before it spoils. Fortunately, there are many ways to turn leftover rice into a new menu, reinventing it to become tomorrow’s side dish or main entrée. These delicious ideas will help you make better use of your leftover rice.

SWEET RICE PUDDING DESSERT

CREAMY RISOTTORICE Risotto is a simple, out-of-the-box solution for a quick dinner you can make with your leftover rice, and it can be served either as a main dish or as a delectable side dish. Being one of the many Italian dishes, a bowl of creamy risotto will take you on a delicious journey to Italy.

The only reason why that pot of leftover rice in your kitchen doesn’t scream dessert potential when you look at it is that you are staring at it with the wrong emotion. Let go of your regret for cooking more than you intended and think rice pudding instead. Rice pudding is a smooth way to transition from savoury to sweet. It is also that one sweet treat that is easy to make at home and might be the most comforting dessert.

RICE PANCAKE Yes, you can make pancakes with your leftover rice. You probably never imagined it, but your leftover rice from the night before can be whipped into a special breakfast treat. You can create magic from what you think is a disaster, so don’t throw that leftover rice into the waste bin or dump it in the fridge for ages just because you feel guilty about throwing it out. Change your regular breakfast routine. Instead of the usual flour pancakes, use your leftover rice instead. What is even better is that they are easier to make than traditional pancakes.

EGG FRIED RICE The ticket to a perfect homemade fried rice is leftover rice. If you are looking for an inexpensive at-home meal that reminds you of what your favourite Chinese restaurant tastes like, look no further than the leftover rice in your fridge. The time spent in the refrigerator gives it that crave-worthy crispy texture. It is so simple that you can make it even on a busy morning.

THE ITALIAN RICE BALL Another excellent way leftover rice can be used is by turning it into rice balls. Deep-fried rice ball is a common Italian street food that makes leftover rice taste like never before. You can bring this Italian street food to your kitchen; it doesn’t just help you avoid wastage but also makes you creative with your meals.

TIPS FOR DECIDING THE RIGHT COUNTRY TO VISIT Travel Companions

Identifying your travel buddies is another factor that helps decide the right country to visit. Your options will be narrowed to romantic destinations if it’s with your spouse. If it’s with family, you will look at locations that boost family ties. But if your companion is yourself, you will consider places with fun activities for solo travellers.

BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA eciding where to travel always feels overwhelming because there is an D endless option of worthwhile destinations around the world waiting for you. Whether it is an awe-inspiring experience in nature, an exploration of a new culture, or having a view of world-class art, you will always have variety in your options. So, how do you decide where to go? Well, in no time, you will hit the road, soar in the sky, or sail the sea, as these pointers will help you decide the right country to visit.

Time Availability The first step to deciding where to travel is determining how much time you have for the trip. Is it a weekend getaway or a month-long vacation? The time you have available determines the number of places you can visit, so rather than spending two days on a flight for a weekend getaway, choose a location that will take you only a few hours to arrive at to maximize your trip experience.

Environmental Considerations You most certainly have your preferred weather option and your environmental turn-offs. If you hate the cold weather, you have no business with cold countries, so they all get struck off your list automatically. If you hate noisy environments, the countries known to be rowdy will be off your list of options, which means fewer countries to choose from. Deciding where to travel by selecting a country that is environmentally pleasing to you helps narrow your choices and makes your trip worth the journey.

Map Out Your Travel Budget Your budget is a significant factor to consider as you plan your next trip. Regardless of the destination, you must spend money on transportation, accommodation, meals, entertainment, and miscellaneous. Knowing your budget will help you find some destinations, narrow choices, and make selecting a place easier. If you have a big budget, you will be striking out the cheap destinations; if you have a small budget, you will be striking out the expensive destinations.

PAGE 12

Identify The Purpose Of Your Trip It is important to know what you want out of a trip before choosing a travel destination. What do you want? Do you want to relax? Do you want to explore the world of fashion? Do you want to absorb nature? Knowing what you want is the perfect guide in deciding the right country to travel to.

WAYS TO STYLE YOUR BOOKSHELF BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA

A

side from storage for books, a bookshelf adds life and colour to a space by boosting aesthetics as style is blended into storage. A bookshelf is not meant to be owned by just book enthusiasts because books aren’t read only by book lovers. Everyone needs a bookshelf. Any paper you own that has words written on it needs to be kept on a bookshelf; it could be school books, office materials, work records, business documents, recipe books, novels, or religious books. You should also know that the way you arrange your books on a bookshelf sometimes makes reading a book difficult and tiring. Here are some simple pointers to help you step up your bookshelf styling game.

PLAY AROUND WITH ARRANGEMENT STYLES

Variety is the spice of life. You don’t have to stick to just the vertical, horizontal or diagonal style of book arrangement. Flex around with all of them. You can spice things up by arranging your science books horizontally, diagonally placing your novels, and keep your inspirational books vertically. Styling your bookshelf with all the different book arrangement styles doesn’t make it look mismatched. Rather, it gives it a touch of creativity.

LEAVE SPACES BETWEEN YOUR BOOKS

COLOUR-CODE

Do not cluster all your books together. Leave spaces between them to allow for air because stuffing them together will only make them easily worn out and stressful to look at.

LAYER IN ARTWORKS AND OBJECTS Tiny artwork pieces placed towards the back of a shelf or beside a book add depth and pattern. Also, when placed in the spaces available, fancy objects help give your bookshelf an aura of ease. Artworks and objects, when judiciously used with the spaces available between books, make the bookshelf appear aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and mentally soothing to the brain.

PAGE 14

Sorting your books by colour makes your bookshelf look like a rainbow. Who doesn’t like looking at the rainbow? When you walk past your bookshelf, the colours will automatically draw you to it, and before you know it, you will find yourself reading a book. Styling your bookshelf by colour is an excellent way to increase the number of times you visit it.

UTILISE BOOKENDS

A bookend plays a vital role in decorating bookshelves. It has both work and aesthetic value, as it serves a unique purpose and can also enhance the beauty of a bookshelf. It is used for keeping the books in position, especially paperbacks and slimmer books, which are less likely to stay upright; therefore, it keeps your books organised at all times. You can use heavy and sturdy decor or architectural pieces to salvage as a bookend. If you want your books to remain in the position you placed them, and you also want to add a sense of style to your bookshelf at the same time, then utilising bookends in styling your bookshelf is your best bet.

CRUSH NEGATIVE SELF-TALK One thing about battling bad habits is that judging yourself for not acting better is easy. Every time you slip up, make a mistake, or fall back, it is easy to condemn yourself. The more you engage in negative self-talk, the deeper you fall under the control of the habit and the more difficult it is to pull yourself out. Whenever you fall, and that self-judging talk comes, use the conjunction ‘but’ to add a new sentence. Instead of saying, “I’m weak and helpless”, you can teach yourself to say, “I’m weak and helpless, but I won’t be this way forever”.

very time you engage in a bad habit, your life’s plan breaks in transmission, which causes a rift between you and your goals. Your mental and physical health becomes affected, and your time and energy get wasted. Breaking a bad habit might not be easy, but it is certainly not impossible. Do you want to break out? Well, here are some pointers to help you delete the bad habits.

CHOOSE A REPLACEMENT FOR YOUR BAD HABITS

To truly eliminate a bad habit, there should be a standby replacement. Have a plan for what you will be doing in place of the bad habit you want to get rid of. What are you going to do when procrastination is calling your name? If you do not have an answer, it won’t be long until you answer the call of procrastination again. So, if you want to say goodbye to a bad habit, be sure to have a new habit you will be saying hello to.

STAY AWAY FROM TRIGGERS

Refraining from the things that cause your bad habits is the easiest way to break free. Do not tempt yourself; avoid the situation entirely. If you want a different outcome, you should use a different approach. You cannot remain in a zone that triggers your bad habit and expect the habit to disappear magically. Leave that situation that causes your bad habit and watch your bad habit leave you.

PICTURE YOUR SUCCESS See yourself getting over the habit, being in control, boldly saying no to it, and standing on your choice. Whatever the habit you are looking to break, visualise yourself crushing it. See yourself building a new identity, smiling, and enjoying your success.

BE WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE

You probably want to keep the idea of wanting to break free from your bad habit to yourself so that when you fall, no one will see you and no one will judge you. That is understandable. However, surrounding yourself with people who want the same thing as you do is like having a support system, a support system that will help you stay strong so you can achieve your goal. Pair up with someone and quit together. You can both hold each other accountable and celebrate your wins, too. This is a driving force bigger than you think.

MOVIE REVIEW:

The Nun II

and belief drive The Fwhichaith Conjuring cinematic universe, finds its heart and soul in Ed

and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The 2018 spin-off The Nun and its new sequel, The Nun II, have attempted to recreate that magic, right down to casting Vera Farmiga’s look-alike younger sister Taissa in a lead role as a demon-fighting nun. This decision leaves the viewer to search fruitlessly for some narrative thread connecting Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene and Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine, but that’s just one of the many goofy choices in this series that makes us question what we’re watching and why. Early on in The Nun II, Sister Irene tries to convince a sceptic of the power of faith, explaining that believing communion wine is the blood of Christ makes it so. Yet The Nun II is so utterly preposterous that it can’t summon the audience into buying into its own logic and central mythology. This horror movie may only succeed in getting viewers to react to its jump scares rather than creating a relentless mood of dread or terror, but it’s still a step up from The Nun or director Michael Chaves’s first crack at the franchise, 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona. Valak, the evil demon that manifests as a sinister nun, was defeated at the end of The Nun by Sister Irene and Father Burke (Demian Bichir) in Romania — or so they thought. The Nun II takes place four years later when mysterious deaths that look like Valak’s handiwork begin appearing throughout Europe, moving westward and catching the attention of Catholic leadership. With her experience fighting demons, Irene is the only one they trust to fight this evil again, even though she apparently didn’t finish the job the first time. She reluctantly travels to France to investigate, joined by the rebellious Sister Debra (Storm Reid), who is as eager to help her friend as she is to escape the rules imposed upon her by her vows. The Nun films traffic in blunt terrors rather than atmospheric ones that linger with the audience longer. Yet what sets the sequel apart from the first film is that those frights actually achieve their aims this time around. The Nun II won’t give hardened horror fans nightmares, but at least it will keep

them awake for its running time, while the first film mostly elicited yawns. Valak is impressively creepy when incorporeal, glimpsed as a shape in the shadows of peeling paint or the turning pages of magazines on a rack. But after appearing in three movies, Valak is now old news. The demon was far scarier in its initial appearance in The Conjuring 2 than it has been in The Nun or its sequel, especially now that the audience is hip to the franchise’s jump-scaring tricks. Yet despite its increasing familiarity, Valak still manages to unnerve, speaking to the power of the original character design and Bonnie Aarons’s performance. The Nun II never quite reaches the terrifying heights of those early Conjuring films, but it does have more creepy moments than its predecessor. The Nun II gets enjoyably silly at times, but it takes the proceedings seriously and follows the path you expect, with one absolutely wild exception. There are a few solid jokes throughout the film, and The Nun II briefly toys with interesting ideas, like the overlap between horror and Catholic martyr lore. However, it’s more concerned with providing a few jump scares than digging into anything really disturbing or thought-provoking. These films also don’t particularly care about historical or geographical settings, which is a shame, given that the series spans decades and continents. While The Nun II is set in 1956 France and was even filmed on location in an abandoned church, that doesn’t inform how the movie is shot, and there’s no real sense of place or time. Everyone speaks English, and there are no details or specificity that might add a sense of realism — or a modicum of care on behalf of the filmmakers.

WATCH OF THE WEEK

LUPIN SEASON 3 Sy. He’s always dapper in flapping coats, flat caps and rare-edition sneakers.

Lupin remains one of the most addictive thrill-rides on TV. This surprise hit portrays the adventures of self-styled “gentleman thief” Assane Diop (Omar Sy) in contemporary Paris. The Senegalese immigrant was inspired in boyhood by Maurice Leblanc’s beloved stories about top-hatted, cape-clad, monoclewearing detective Arsène Lupin. He now follows in the debonair criminal’s footsteps, pulling off heists with panache and plenty of references to his well-read paperbacks.

If you’ve managed to hang around for all eight previous films in the franchise, The Nun II will prove pleasing enough. This entry absolves the spin-offs’ worst sins; it’s sometimes sillier than it is scary, but it’s never as boring as either its direct predecessor or Chaves’s The Curse of La Llorona. A mid-credits scene provides a pointless bit of fan service that’s hardly worth staying around for, but what’s another three minutes when you’ve already put in the work with eight films?

We last saw our hero framed for murder. As we return for part trois, he’s the most wanted fugitive in France. To make amends with his ex-wife, Claire (Ellie Goulding lookalike Ludivine Sagnier), and son Raoul (Etan Simon), he hatches a typically audacious plan emerge from the shadows and pull off one last highstakes job – “the job”, as he puts it – before spiriting his family away to start a new life overseas.

Rating: 4/10

Of course, things don’t quite go entirely smoothly. Across seven propulsive episodes, Diop steals a priceless black pearl, Manet’s painting,

and an antique bracelet. He runs rings around police and settles scores with enemies. There are plentiful plot twists which we won’t spoil.

Suspension of disbelief, however, is often required. Diop’s sleight-of-hand is supernatural, while his “master of disguise” schtick doesn’t always convince. However Lupin is a criminal you can’t help rooting for. He’s explicitly compared to Robin Hood. Rather than robbing from the rich to give to the poor, he represents the revenge of the underdog and gives voice to the people. This series sees him ascend to folk hero status, which he naturally uses to his advantage. His adorable dog, the brilliantly named J’Accuse, proves a scruffy scene-stealer.

The escapist drama uses Sherlock-style gimmickry and Bond-esque stunts to keep the pace rattling along. Time-hops and slo-mo filming explain how Diop pulls off his tricks, executed with swagger by the charismatic

The show is an avenue to live out adventure vicariously, one which our dashing hero pulls off with huge charm, plenty of heart and a hefty dose of adrenaline. Rollicking, old-fashioned fun. As his followers keep reminding us: “Lupin never dies.”
