Our cover talent this week, Chimezie Imo, has come a long way from his days at MTV’s Shuga Naija. From Shuga, he went on to play a role in Nimbe, which earned him an African Movie Academy Award nomination and Choke, which got him his first nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). Imo gives it his all when he is on set, putting everything else on pause until he finishes a project. His role as Elijah in Breath of Life was the same process. Speaking of giving it his all, for one of the scenes in Breath of Life, he had to be underwater for about 60-90 seconds uninterrupted, and even though he could swim, he couldn’t hold his breath for that long, so he had to train for three weeks. The result is what you see on screen. You might ask how a young man such as Chimezie Imo stays grounded. He surrounds himself with the right people— a supportive network of peers and mentors, and he practices mindfulness techniques. This upcoming star’s story is quite an interesting read. You’ll find it on pages 8 to 10. Picking an outfit to wear to the movies on date night can be hectic. But don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Pages 4 and 5 guide you on what to wear. It will surprise you that you can dress according to the movie genre you will see.

DATE NIGHT DOS AND DON’TS Fashion Tips for a Perfect Movie Night Ensemble

BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

1

COMFORT IS KEY

Make sure you don’t sacrifice style for comfort while choosing your clothes. Choose materials that breathe, such as jersey or cotton. You can combine comfort and style perfectly with a comfortable sweater, chic jeans, or casual dress. Remember that you will be seated for several hours, so ensure your attire is suitable for an extended movie marathon.

2

WEATHERAPPROPRIATE LAYERS

Wearing clothing appropriate for the weather can help you be ready for any sudden cold or hot theatres. Adding flair to your ensemble and staying warm in different weather conditions may be achieved with an elegant jacket or a stunning shawl. Additionally, layers let you change your appearance without sacrificing style for pre or post movie plans.

FOOTWEAR MATTERS

4

Make intelligent shoe selections; comfort need not be sacrificed for style. Choose chic ankle boots, adorable flats, or trendy sneakers. Make sure your shoes are appropriate for varied terrain if your date night includes a stroll or dinner before the movie. After all, you don’t want painful feet distracting you from the movie.

5

VERSATILITY IS VIRTUE

Pick an ensemble that works well for both dinner and the movie. You may easily adjust to varied circumstances with a dress that can be dressed up or down or with an ensemble that coordinates well. This way, you’re always ready for a spontaneous change of plans without thinking about your appearance.

ACCESSORISE WITH CARE

Use well-selected accessories to complete your movie night look. Keep it understated and sophisticated; a bold watch, tasteful jewellery, or a chic belt can add flair to your outfit without being unduly flashy. When watching a peaceful movie, stay away from loud accessories that could disturb other people.

6

CONSIDER THE MOVIE

Dress according to the kind of film you plan to watch. Choose a carefree and fun outfit if it’s a casual comedy. Choose a dressier outfit for a more formal occasion, such as a premiere or romantic movie. Allow the film genre to influence your wardrobe selections so that they blend in with the evening’s overall theme.

CONCLUSION You’ll look and feel your best if you incorporate these thorough and simple-to-follow fashion ideas into your movie night outfit. Recall that the objective is to combine comfort and style in just the right amounts so that you can enjoy the movie and leave a lasting impression. Now grab some popcorn, settle in, and enjoy your perfectly planned movie night!

DATING OVER 30

PRIORITISE 3.SELF-CARE

Navigating The Unique Challenges of Adult Relationships

It can be challenging to balance a job, a family, and a personal life. Prioritising self-care is essential for preserving mental clarity and general well-being—schedule time for enjoyable, refreshing, and personally uplifting activities. A fulfilled individual brings positive energy to a relationship.

BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

ome particular difficulties and complications come with dating after S thirty. Unlike the carefree days of youth, adults navigating the dating world encounter various issues that can impact their dating experiences.

The dynamics are different depending on prior experiences and established occupations, but worry not—it is possible to navigate these obstacles successfully. This article will discuss six valuable strategies to help you maximise your dating experience and successfully negotiate the complexities of adult relationships.

LEARN FROM PAST 4.EXPERIENCES You’ll probably have experienced several significant relationships by the time you reach your 30s. Think back on those previous relationships and consider what went well, what didn’t, and what you discovered about yourself. Use this knowledge to make wise decisions in your dating endeavours and avoid repeating past mistakes.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT 5.EXPECTATIONS

Potential partners may have their own commitments, and adult life frequently entails various responsibilities. Regarding your expectations from a relationship, be reasonable and consider your and your partner’s unique circumstances. A more harmonious relationship is facilitated by understanding and flexibility.

EMBRACE YOUR 1.INDEPENDENCE If you’re in your 30s, you likely possess a strong sense of independence and self-worth. Take it on! Recognise your wants, objectives, and values before searching for a partner who will complement rather than complete you. This way of thinking encourages positive relationships based on respect and understanding.

. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 2 IS KEY Effective communication is essential for any relationship to succeed. Communicate your wants, expectations, and deal-breakers honestly and openly. Though it’s common for grownups to think their partners can read their brains, being honest with your ideas helps you build stronger connections and prevent misunderstandings.

QUALITY OVER 6.QUANTITY You could notice that the dating scene differs in your 30s compared to your 20s. Make excellent relationships your priority rather than the number of dates. Give relationships that share your ideals and offer the possibility of longterm fulfilment your time and attention.

CONCLUSION

A combination of self-awareness, skilful communication, and readiness to change and evolve is needed to navigate adult relationships’ difficulties successfully. You lay the groundwork for deep connections by accepting your independence, putting self-care first, and drawing lessons from the past. Recall that little, regular actions add up to a healthy adult relationship rather than grand gestures. So go ahead and use these helpful dating advice to start your dating journey and enjoy all that dating beyond 30 has to offer in terms of fulfilling experiences.

Chimezie Imo COVER

Making A Mark in Film With Every Breath

I

t’s no surprise who our cover star is this week. Chimezie Imo has blossomed from his humble beginnings as Shina in MTV’s Shuga Naija, and now his most recent performance as Elijah in the Prime Video Naija blockbuster Breath of Life confirms that Imo is a force to be reckoned with in the Nollywood scene and fast becoming a household name amongst movie lovers across the world. A dashing young man with a charming smile, Imo, just like most of us, has big dreams to reach the peak of his acting career and hopes to someday work with international filmmakers around the world and win an Oscar through his love for storytelling. In this interview, THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Lifestyle Editor-at-Large, Eki Ogunbor, Chimezie Imo, talks a little about his childhood growing up in the choir, his lifestyle and acting rituals and his role in his most recent hit movie, Breath of Life.

THEWILL DOWNTOWN • www.thewilldowntown.com

COVER Can you share a bit about your journey into acting and how you discovered your passion for it? I started acting at the age of 6 when I joined my church Drama group “His Majesty Drama Group.” Then I went to a reality show called The Next Movie Star, where I emerged runner-up. Since then, it’s been attending auditions and seeking opportunities to do what I love. And God has held my hands all through my journey.

You mentioned watching movies with a delicious meal. What’s your favourite food to eat? I love my afang soup and poundo yam. I am also a rice man, lol. As an actor, how do you choose the roles you take on, and what drew you to the character of Elijah in Breath of Life? Roles I have played in the past have chosen me and not the other way around. When I read a script, I feel fear and the inability to drop that script until I am done. That’s one of the signs, and the same was the case for Breath of Life. I couldn’t drop the script. I kept on reading, and it was captivating page by page, and by the time I was done reading, I saw tears rolling out of my eyes. I quickly wiped them off because I thought I was being dramatic for crying over a screenplay, not until the premiere when I saw it with almost 100 people, and the entire hall was balling with tears.

“I am a product of love. I personally connect to these themes because I grew up in a home of love; my parents sacrificed so much for me and my other siblings to get an education, feed us, and become the humans we are today, for which I am very grateful.”

Beyond Breath of Life, what other projects have been particularly meaningful or impactful for you in your acting career? Every project has come with its blessing, whether big or small. But I am grateful for Nimbe; it got me my African Movie Academy Award nomination, and Choke, which got me my first Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award(AMVCA) nomination. Also, MTV Shuga; that was my first biggest job at that time. Are there specific actors or directors who have influenced your approach to acting? I watch a lot of stuff, even the not-sogreat films or shows because I feel there is always something to learn or at least unlearn after watching an actor or seeing a director’s approach. So, it’s safe to say every actor or director I have watched or worked with has influenced me in some way. How do you balance your personal life with the demands of being an actor, especially when working on intense projects like Breath of Life? I love my job so much. I take it seriously, so I like to put every other thing on hold and pause when working on projects till I am done with it. It’s the same with Breath of Life. We shot 80% of the film in Ibadan, so I had to be away from home and everyone (both mentally and physically) and then get back to my regular programming and personal life afterwards.

What’s your favourite movie genre at the moment? To be honest, I love them all and watch them all, even music videos and short content on social media; count me in. I like and respect all forms of entertainment, but as an actor, I am curious to see what I will do with an action script. I would like for that to happen. I think it’s going to be interesting.

In your opinion, what makes a film like Breath of Life relevant to audiences today? We always need to be reminded that every individual on earth is here with a purpose. We should also remember the importance of love and sacrifice (and how they’re interlinked) because the greatest love of all is for a man to lay down his life for (his son) — God’s love and I think Breath of Life tried to remind us of that. To love, to find our purpose and fulfil it. “To love, to find our purpose and fulfil it.” That said, what would you say is your purpose in life? For me, simply bringing more joy into the lives of those around me brings me joy, whether through my talents or different acts of service. I would say that’s my purpose, but as I go on in life, I discover even more purposes. How do you balance staying true to a character’s essence and bringing your own unique interpretation to the role? For me, to stay true to a character’s essence while adding my own touch, I deeply understand the character’s background, motivations, and emotions. I find personal connections to aspects of the character, allowing my perspective to enrich the portrayal. I also experiment with different

“Maintaining groundedness in the film industry for me involves cultivating resilience. Staying committed to my craft, embracing uncertainties as opportunities for growth, and being adaptable to changes on or off set.”

Breath of Life explores profound themes. How do you personally connect with the movie’s messages or lessons? One of the most profound themes in Breath of Life is love and sacrifice, some of the strongest qualities in any kind of relationship, whether friendship, relationship, or partnership. I am a product of love. I personally connect to these themes because I grew up in a home of love; my parents sacrificed so much for me and my other siblings to get an education, feed us, and become the humans we are today, for which I am very grateful.

“I used to be in a choir and headed a dance group. So I sing, dance and also write. Truthfully, I am looking at exploring these other talents more this year. For hobbies, I like to watch movies with a bowl of delicious meal.”

Can you tell us about any hobbies or interests you have outside of acting that people might not be aware of? I used to be in a choir and headed a dance group. So I sing, dance and also write. Truthfully, I am looking at exploring these other talents more this year. For hobbies, I like to watch movies with a bowl of delicious meal.

What, to you, is the meaning of life? What does life mean to you? Hmm, life. That’s a very interesting question. The meaning of life is subjective and varies with individuals. For me, life is experiencing reality by interacting authentically with the environment and other individuals. Giving something back to the world through creativity and self-expression, and changing our attitude when faced with a situation or circumstance we cannot change. Above all, I try to enjoy life because we cannot get out of it alive.

Speaking of siblings, what was it like being Chimezie as a child compared to Chimezie as a young adult? Chimezie as a kid is much like Chimezie as an adult thinking about it now. I always wanted to work hard on everything I set my mind on. Growing up, I set up a dance crew cause I thought I was going to be the best dancer in Nigeria; I even joined the choir. My mum said I once told her I wanted to be the firstborn, so I guess I have always had the mindset of getting things done in the most excellent way I possibly could.

interpretations during rehearsals to discover what feels authentic yet distinctive. Balancing fidelity to the script and my creative input helps create a nuanced and unique performance. Can you share a memorable or challenging moment from the set of Breath of Life that stands out in your mind? One of the most memorable, challenging moments in Breath of Life for me would be the underwater scene, one of Elijah’s last scenes. I had to give the director about 70 seconds uninterrupted underwater as it was a one-shot. We shot the scene for hours, and I almost caught a cold, but I loved the challenge. Did you have to learn to swim for this role, or did you already know how? I already knew how to swim before Breath of Life but never knew how to stay underwater for a long time, so I had to practice for about three weeks to stay underwater because the director wanted to have an uninterrupted 60-90 seconds of me underwater and we were able to achieve that. How do you stay grounded and focused amid the film industry’s fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable nature? Staying grounded in the film industry for me involves cultivating resilience. Staying committed to my craft, embracing uncertainties as opportunities for growth, and being adaptable to changes on or off set. I try to establish routines that provide stability amid the unpredictability. Surround myself with a supportive network of peers and mentors, and practice mindfulness techniques to stay focused during the fast-paced nature of film production.

COVER What advice would you give aspiring actors who look up to your work in Breath of Life? Rejections are part of the journey. Learn from them, stay persistent, and use setbacks as motivation to improve. Remember, every actor’s journey is unique. Stay true to your authentic self, and enjoy the process of growth and discovery in your craft. Are there specific goals or milestones you hope to achieve in your acting career in the coming years? I want to tell more great stories on a more global stage. Work with international filmmakers around the world, win an Oscar or two or gain other international recognition. Sounds cool, right? I am excited for everyone to see a couple of projects in the works, and I am also going into producing this year, so keep your eyes on Chimezie.

Listening Party for The Chorus Leader album as a producer and singer, also confirmed this at the listening party. In Timi’s words; “The whole idea is, I grew up in church, I learnt praise and worship choruses, and as a person, I discovered that in the process of songwriting and development, I know how to write choruses; it comes easily for me and the people that make music with me will know that and will agree. Cobhams is here first. I used to think that I was mad. I can call Cobham’s by 2am; he suffered in my hand. I’ll just call him and say Cobhams, wake up just wake up. Something is playing in my head.” To which Cobham’s himself replied, “I suffered. By 3am, 5am, Timi will call me with a new chorus” from a corner in the audience. Timi continued, “The chorus is like the bride; everyone can dress very well, but they cannot dress better than the bride because it’s not their wedding. I put the best ideas in the choruses, and I make sure that I write them and sing them in such a way that everybody can sing along with it.”

H

i Sweetie! Hope you’re doing well and have had a good week. For me, the highlight of my week was attending Timi Dakolo’s listening party for his new album titled The Chorus Leader which officially drops on the 26th of January. Attending the listening party was also a beautiful opportunity to gain insights into the singer’s creative process. Even better was that I shared that moment with my friends, who are also music lovers like me. In excitement about his third studio album, Timi Dakolo states, “The Chorus Leader is a project I poured my heart and soul into. It is a celebration of music, love, and talent we have as Nigerians. I can’t wait for my fans to experience this musical journey with me.” When speaking about the title of the album, the chorus leader himself said he’s been blessed by God with a gift for making sweet, catchy song choruses that are easy for people to sing along to. He literally hears them either in his sleep or while going about his day, and just like that, he’s got the chorus to another hit song. Cobhams Asuquo, who featured on the

Calling himself ‘the chorus leader’ is apt. It’s a perfect description of the music he makes and how it makes you feel. I love that Timi uses his life experiences and other relatable life stories to create music that we can either learn from or relate to in one way or another while being entertained by his unique voice and beautiful, melodious instrumental arrangements. If you’re looking for music that speaks to your soul or a body of work that takes you on a journey of emotions and life’s nuances, then this new album has that vibe and more.

The track list for this album includes songs like Omo Ayo (my personal favourite. A Yoruba word which means Child of Joy), This Woman (which features Falz, Phyno, Cobhams and Black Geez), Life [Na So E Be] (which features Patoranking), Premium Enjoyment (a song that I’m sure will be popular amongst the ladies) and Men of the South, which is the first single off the album and rightfully so because it carries a presence just like the men Timi sings of in the “war chant” sounding tune. Be sure to check our Instagram handle @thewilldowntown to watch a video of me (@ekiogunbor) at the event. I can’t wait to share all my music loves with you, but starting today, I’m introducing a new segment to my column called SGD Spotlight. In this little segment, I’ll be sharing my favourite thing for the week. It could be a book, song or movie. A destination, meal, word or quote. Whatever I’m loving for the week, you’re going to hear it here first. And for today’s first pick, it’s a slang, a popular Gen Z slang.

SGD Spotlight Slang of the week

“CAP” Meaning: To lie or exaggerate; something false or untrue. Example: “He said he has a million

followers, but that’s cap.” “She’s capping” “No cap, I think it’s true.” Have a great week fam!

Glow Up With Gold The Rise of Gold-Infused Beauty Products And Their Impact

BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

T

rends in the ever-changing world of skincare and cosmetics frequently catch the attention of enthusiasts and cause a revolution in the field. The use of gold in cosmetics is one such trend that has garnered a lot of traction. Gold has a timeless aesthetic appeal, but its appeal goes beyond that; it also promises regeneration and glowing skin. This article will examine the emergence of gold-infused beauty products and the significant shifts they have brought about in the beauty industry.

3

. LUXURY AND OPULENCE

Beyond its functional uses, gold infusions hint at extravagance and grandeur in the beauty business. Gold-plated products create a sensory experience that goes beyond the ordinary and improves the vanity’s aesthetic attractiveness. This infusion of luxury has changed consumer perception, making beauty regimens seem like enjoyable rituals as much as practical ones.

2

5

. CONFIDENCE BOOST

One should not undervalue the psychological effects of utilising cosmetic products laced with gold. Using these products regularly turns into a self-care ritual that boosts well-being and self-esteem. Consumers frequently express feelings of empowerment and pampering, attributing their increased self-esteem to the opulent experience of adding gold to their beauty regimens.

6

. MARKET EVOLUTION

The beauty market is changing due to the popularity of gold-infused cosmetics. Brands are expanding their product lines to keep up with the increasing demand from consumers for these luxurious formulations. A more diverse and dynamic beauty market that caters to a range of interests and desires has been made possible by this evolution, which has also brought about innovative formulation.

. ANTI-AGEING PROPERTIES

1

. RADIANT SKIN

Beauty products with gold added to them are praised for giving skin a dazzling glow. It is said that the valuable metal promotes blood flow and improves skin cell renewal, giving the complexion a more radiant appearance. After using products enriched with gold in their skincare routines, users frequently remark a notable increase in their skin’s overall radiance and vibrancy.

PAGE 12

The anti-ageing qualities of beauty products mixed with gold are among their main advantages. Antioxidant properties in gold are believed to fight free radicals and lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. A calculated approach to addressing the ageless desire for smooth, young skin is incorporating gold into skincare formulas.

4

. IMPROVED ABSORPTION OF INGREDIENTS Gold nanoparticles can improve how other active substances are absorbed when added to cosmetic goods. By enhancing the efficiency with which essential ingredients penetrate the skin, this synergy increases the efficacy of skincare formulation. This impact confirms the effectiveness of cosmetic products infused with gold in producing noticeable and longlasting results.

CONCLUSION The use of gold in beauty products goes beyond appearances, providing a comprehensive experience that blends pleasure with skincare advantages. Goldinfused beauty products have an influence beyond superficial appearances, reflecting the changing panorama of beauty from glowing skin to an elevated sense of luxury.

Food Pairing 101 Unlocking the Perfect Wine and African Food Combinations

T

BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

he appropriate wine can take your dining experience to new heights when enjoying a meal. A delight awaits you if you enjoy African food. The six ideal wine and African meal pairings we’ll look at in this article will tempt your taste buds. For you to quickly understand the magic of wine pairing with these mouthwatering dishes, we’ll keep it clear-cut and easy.

(4) AKARA AND SPARKLING WINE (1) JOLLOF RICE AND ROSÉ The aromas of tomato, spices, and soft rice scream out in the popular West African dish known as jollof rice. A fruity, fresh rosé wine is a good match with the dish. The wine’s acidity balances the dish by enhancing its richness.

(2) NIGERIAN SUYA AND SAUVIGNON BLANC Suya, a spicy grilled beef dish from Nigeria, goes well with Sauvignon Blanc. The wine’s citrus aromas complement the taste of the food while its zingy acidity cuts through the spice.

(3) CHINCHINGA AND PINOT NOIR Skewers of grilled meat and vegetables are called “Chinchinga” in Ghana. Pinot Noir pairs well with the smokey, savoury goodness of Chinchinga thanks to its red fruit nuances and light body.

These deep-fried bean cakes are a preferred breakfast or snack choice in Nigeria. The effervescence and crispness of sparkling wine create a pleasant contrast with the texture and flavours of Akara.

(5) TUNISIAN COUSCOUS AND CHARDONNAY Chardonnay pairs beautifully with Tunisian couscous, which is frequently accompanied by flavourful, spicy meats. The wine’s creamy texture and subtle wood flavour heighten the meal’s richness.

(6) MOROCCAN TAGINE AND MALBEC A robust red wine like Malbec is the perfect complement to the fragrant spices and delicate meats and vegetables of Moroccan Tagine. The wine’s mild tannins and black fruit flavours complement the tagine’s complex flavour characteristics.

CONCLUSION African cuisine and wine can be easy to pair. These six pairings show how wine that complements your favourite foods can enhance its qualities. Remember that wine pairing is all about enhancing your culinary experience, whether you’re savouring the robust tastes of Moroccan tagine or the warming aromas of jollof rice. Don’t be afraid to try these tasty combinations to make your next African meal a memorable dining experience. Cheers to good food and great wine!

CAREER

FILM PRODUCTION AND ITS SCOPES Diverse Careers Behind The Scenes

BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE hen discussing film production, the first things that come to most people’s minds are the actors and actresses. But then, film production is W a collaborative and diverse process involving numerous talented individuals working behind the scenes to bring stories to life on the silver screen. If you have ever considered having a career in film production but are unsure about what particular role to go for, this piece is for you. We will discuss a few of the vast array of roles that contribute to the magic of filmmaking, so if you didn’t know about some roles beforehand, enjoy reading as you get enlightened.

Producer

Cinematographer/Director of Photography (DP)

Producers are the front-runners and architects of a film project, overseeing its development from conception to completion. They handle budgeting, hiring key personnel, and ensuring the project stays on track creatively and financially. Producers wear many hats throughout filmmaking, from project conception to distribution. Their ability to balance creative vision with practical consideration is essential to the success of a film. An ideal example is the world-famous Tyler Perry.

Cinematographers, or DPs, are responsible for capturing the visual essence of the film. They make crucial decisions on camera angles, lighting, and framing to evoke the desired emotions. They also collaborate with various departments, including the production design, costume, and make-up, to ensure visual continuity and unity throughout production.

Director Directors are the visionaries who shape the overall artistic direction of a film. They work closely with the cast and crew to bring the screenplay to life, making creative decisions on everything from framing to performances.

Screenwriter Screenwriters such as Jordan Peele are the wordsmiths who craft a film’s narrative. They develop the script, laying the foundation for the story unfolding on screen. The screenwriter’s ability to create a compelling and well-structured screenplay shapes the story’s narrative in a movie and its characters.

Production Designer Production designers create the film’s visual world. They work on sets, costumes, and overall design aesthetics, ensuring the visual elements align with the director’s vision.

PAGE 14

Costume Designer Costume designers curate the characters’ wardrobes, ensuring that costumes fit the period and style and contribute to character development. Their roles are essential in creating a believable cinematic experience by imbuing the characters with the proper clothing to look the part. When naming successful costume designers, Ruth Carter, who has her shelf heavy from awards, is one to idolize.

So there you have it. Hopefully, this has given you an idea of what you could go into. This shows that film production is a harmony of diverse talents working in a symphony to create cinematic masterpieces. From the initial spark of an idea to the final cut, each career in film production contributes a unique skill set, collectively shaping the visual and narrative tapestry that captivates audiences worldwide. HEALTH

UNHEALTHY FOOD CULTURE AND I OBESITY

BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE

Understanding The Detrimental Connection of Both

t’s alarming when one realizes the prevailing rate of obesity levels in our world as of today. It’s no news that obesity poses so many risks to the human body, such as heart issues and diabetes. Quite a few factors contribute to its increasing numbers, of course, and one is the unhealthy food culture amongst several people. We all are aware of keeping our bodies in peak condition, but not everyone understands the impact of their eating habits and how it affects their health. This editorial gives you insights into the link between the choices we make in diet and the obesity epidemic.

processed snacks have become a norm and are much more accessible to the masses, creating an environment where bad eating habits progress.

Causes of Unhealthy Eating

Understanding Unhealthy Food Culture To help you understand what precisely these unhealthy eating habits are, it refers to how people prioritise tastier foods that are easier to get over foods with more nutritional value. If offered the chance to choose between a plate of salad and a cake coated with chocolate, it’s obvious what most people’s choice would be. These unhealthy choices people make every day are what give rise to the high level of obesity we are experiencing.

The Rise of Unhealthy Food Culture Modern lifestyle has enabled the rise of this ill culture that often places more value on food that can be got conveniently than food with more nutritional benefits. Fast food, sugary beverages, and highly

There are several reasons people engage in such harmful practices. Factors such as stress, depression, poverty, lack of desire to eat healthy food, and busy schedules are a few of the factors that propel people to resort to this type of habit. People under stress and people suffering from depression tend to be impulsive eaters. Most of the time, they aren’t even hungry; eating seems to be some relaxation process for them, and such mindless eating doesn’t help the body.

Dangers Posed by Mindless Eating

Like everything in life, such a risky lifestyle does have its consequences on the body. The consequences of an unhealthy food culture go beyond just weight gain. Chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other obesity-related complications are on the rise, putting immense strain on healthcare systems globally.

These are important starting steps to get the masses to change towards a healthier food culture completely. Unhealthy food culture is a crucial agent of the obesity epidemic, posing severe threats to public health in individuals of all ages. By encouraging society to switch to better eating habits, promoting nutritional education, and implementing supportive policies to allow access to healthy food, we can work towards curbing the rising tide of obesity and building a healthier future.

Curbing This Health Hazard

Bringing the obesity epidemic to an end requires a variety of approaches. A good start would be educating the public about nutrition, promoting healthier food choices, and implementing policies that discourage the overconsumption of unhealthy foods.

an we have Timothée Chalamet play everyone, all the time, in everything, please? Thank you.

Chalamet and writer/director Paul King (his Paddington movies were instant classics) are the keys to the enormous charm of Wonka, which asks what led Roald Dahl’s playful Willy Wonka to pursue a life in chocolate. Spoiler alert: It has to do with innate talent and a desire to hold onto his late mother, who Willy says “promised that when I shared chocolate with the world, she’d be right there.” There’s a timeless, old-fashioned-in-thebest-possible-way quality to Wonka, which is set in an indeterminate city that resembles bits of Paris, London, Copenhagen, Berlin and Venice all smashed together in one imaginative storybook. It may take place in the present, but there are no cell phones or computers, so that’s unclear. What we do know, or at least strongly suspect, is that we’re in a land where half a dozen bad guys — including a trio of sour candy makers perpetrating a chocpocalypse, Keegan-Michael Key’s corrupt cop and a hotelier/prison warden played with gusto by Oscar winner Olivia Colman — can’t trump the kindness and imagination of Willy and his fellow hotel/prison residents. (Calah Lane is endearing as Noodle, a resourceful girl Willy befriends, and Hugh Grant is droll as Oompa-Loompa.) King perfected a vibe in the Wonka films that is funny and sweet, with a slightly ironic edge — and that vibe translates beautifully to Wonka. The familycomedy-with-a-few-songs formula is consistently amusing, filled with whimsical details (Wonka walks across a

Then there’s Chalamet. I’m the first to admit that when this movie was announced, I wondered if we needed a new Wonka, especially since the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) is so beloved and the creepy Johnny Depp Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) is so easily forgotten. But, other than welcome reprises of a couple of songs from the original, Wonka covers very little of the territory of those movies, interested more in understanding how Willy became a person who crafts chocolates with the ability to summon memories and emotions. That through line gives Chalamet what he needs to make the character his own. It’s a big, go-for-broke performance that conveys mischief and heartache. Previous Wonkas haven’t had anywhere to go, character-wise — he’s a circus ringmaster, and we don’t really care what makes him tick. But Wonka and Chalamet do care about that. They also care about the way foods like chocolate form associations for us. That’s what makes this Wonka so unexpectedly moving. Over its course, Willy learns it’s not really about the magic ingredients (giraffe’s milk) he puts into his chocolates but about the real-life magic that happens when food brings us together to celebrate, mourn, or giggle. All of that is there in Wonka, but it’s not at all heavy-handed. King has a graceful, light touch, and somehow, he has gotten everyone associated with his movie to buy into his very specific, very endearing worldview. Wonka’s land is fanciful and made up. But the feels it makes us feel? Those are very real.

Clay is out looking for answers the next day when he’s caught in a storm of red flyers falling from the sky, reading “Death to America” in a foreign language. Esmail, whose screenplay is based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, often juxtaposes several events simultaneously to heighten tension. Still, those moments only highlight how little is actually happening on screen, and his misdirections continually meet dead ends. New wrinkles are constantly added into the mix — a mysterious shed in the woods, a series of shrieking sounds from the sky, an incident with loosening teeth — but little is offered in the form of resolution, only more mysteries. A standoff finally comes with a survivalist, played by Kevin Bacon, who forces Hawke’s character to admit he’s utterly useless without his phone. This is probably true for many of us in this modern world, but it seemed like we were headed for something greater than a lecture on our reliance on tech. A closing joke feels cheap given what led up to it, a last laugh from Esmail that seems on the audience rather than with it. Leave the World Behind has some big ideas about the end of the world and how it will come, but in the end, that’s all they are: ideas.
