T

he Nigerian entertainment industry has improved over the years, and 2023 was a year that proved it. Movies were produced at top-notch quality, and songs got international recognition and collaborations, such as Selena Gomez and Rema’s Calm Down. Let’s not forget that Davido got his first Grammy nomination in three categories. Asake had hit after hit, with his Amapiano and Yoga being the most popular. There were also low times as we celebrated the highs, such as the untimely passing of rising star Mohbad. On the movie–making front, we had hits such as Jagun Jagun, which tells the story of a warlord who begins to feel threatened by a young warrior. There was also A Sunday Affair, a romantic movie in which two best friends fall for the same man. Even though it had highs and lows, if we sum up 2023 for the Nigerian entertainment industry, it was a good year. Read our 2023 review on pages 8 through 10. This week’s fashion page shed some insight on how to detox your wardrobe for the New Year. Arranging your closet will give you a cleaner space and new insights into your style. WARDROBE DETOX T Start The Year Fresh With A Closet Cleanse

he beginning of a new year is a perfect opportunity to renew our environments and resolutions. While making resolutions to better ourselves, why not consider renewing our wardrobe? Arranging your closet is a revitalising activity that gives you a cleaner space and new insights into your style. This article will show six simple methods to begin the year with a rejuvenating wardrobe cleanse.

1

ASSESS YOUR STYLE EVOLUTION

The first step is to study and analyse your style evolution. Check if the clothes you currently own fit the person you are now. If you discover any item or clothing that no longer fits your style or way of life, it may be time to do away with them. Hold onto apparel that makes you happy and fit with the person you’ve become.

2

THE THREE-STEP SORTING METHOD

You can streamline the process using the three-step sorting procedure: keep, donate, and dispose of. Thoroughly go through every item in your wardrobe to check their fit, condition, and emotional significance. Discard or donate anything that is worn out or no longer fits. Remember, the motto of the minimalist movement is “Quality Over Quantity”.

FASHION EMBRACE THE CAPSULE WARDROBE CONCEPT

4

To streamline your everyday decisions, invest in a capsule wardrobe. Select a wide variety of classic, adaptable components that you can easily separate and, at the same time, combine. By doing this, you won’t suffer from decision fatigue, and there will be a greater emphasis on sustainable fashion through thoughtful consumption.

SEASONAL ROTATION

By arranging your closet according to season, you can save space and be prepared for any weather. Use clear containers or vacuum-sealed bags to store off-season items. Even though sifting through out-of-theseason clothing can be frustrating, this method allows you to easily access relevant items in your wardrobe.

5

INVEST IN STORAGE

Adequate storage is the foundation of any well-organised closet. Invest in several spacesaving solutions, including shoe racks, slimline hangers, and collapsible storage bins. For vertical space, hanging organisers and shelf dividers are the best options. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, a neat closet simplifies choosing clothes for each day.

6

SCHEDULE REGULAR CHECK-INS

It takes constant effort to keep a closet free of clutter. Plan on evaluating your clothing every few months by scheduling routine check-ins. Your clothing demands will change along with your style. Utilise these check-ins to determine which items are no longer relevant and clear space for new additions that suit your tastes.

CONCLUSION A practical step towards welcoming a new beginning in the new year is starting a wardrobe cleanse. By implementing these six simple actions, you may free up mental and physical space and breathe fresh life into your style and self-expression. Happy cleansing!

THE INTROVERT’S GUIDE TO DATING

Finding Love on Your Own Terms BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

lthough dating can be an exciting adventure, entering the realm A of romantic relationships can be daunting for introverts. For individuals who like their alone time, dating can be too much with

its bustling social scenes, small conversations, and intense events. Don’t worry, though, my fellow reclusive people! With six doable tactics to help you discover love on your terms, this extensive article is customised just for you. There’s no need to compromise who you truly are or put up with awkward circumstances—let’s go into this dating journey with ease and confidence.

4. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY Large groups don’t always work for introverts; instead, one-on-one encounters tend to work better. Rather than overextending yourself, concentrate on building a few deep relationships. When you prioritise quality above number, you can be sure that your time and effort are being used in fulfilling and compatible relationships.

EMBRACE YOUR NATURE 1.INTROVERTED Accepting who you are as an introvert is the first step towards finding love. Acknowledge and cherish the distinctive characteristics that define your individuality. Recognise the power and depth of being contemplative rather than striving to conform to extroverted dating conventions. Real friendships are built on a foundation of self-awareness.

OPEN ABOUT YOUR INTROVERSION 5.BE In any relationship, being truthful is crucial. Talk candidly with prospective partners about your introverted personality. This openness filters out people who might not recognise or value the beauty of introversion, in addition to laying the groundwork for comprehension. Accept yourself as you are, and those who appreciate you for who you are will come your way.

CHOOSE VENUES 2.THOUGHTFUL Choose more private venues instead of the packed clubs. Seek out locations such as a peaceful park, a charming coffee shop, or an art gallery where meaningful conversations can thrive. You may foster real connections without the loud noise of busy crowds by selecting places with intention.

CREATE 6.BOUNDARIES When it comes to dating, introverts need to learn how to set limits. Admit when you need time to yourself and be explicit about what you anticipate from social interactions. You’ll have a better, longer-lasting relationship with someone who respects your boundaries.

UTILISE ONLINE DATING 3.MINDFULLY For introverts, online dating can be a really useful tool. Carefully curate your web profile, emphasising your values and areas of interest. Before you meet up in person, take your time getting to know possible matches through texting. With this method, introverts can establish a stronger relationship before dealing with the difficulties of in-person communication.

CONCLUSION

Being an introvert when dating is not a problem to be solved but rather a special adventure to be welcomed. You make entering into real and satisfying relationships easier by appreciating and accepting who you are, setting boundaries, being upfront about your introversion, picking venues carefully, using online dating wisely, and setting clear expectations. Go forward with confidence, introverts, and may you discover love on your own wonderfully introverted terms.

2023 in Review

Highlights in the World of Entertainment

O

ne would agree that 2023 gave us more than a few glamorous and thrilling moments, especially in the entertainment industry. The Nigerian entertainment scene keeps waxing stronger yearly, and 2023 was no exception. It’s been spectacular, from the movie industry to the music business and fashion shows. There’s no denying any of that. For this expose, we will outline some of the outstanding acts and feats for 2023.

Asake There’s no way we would be highlighting the events of 2023 in the music industry without mentioning the exploits of Mr Money himself, Asake. Since his hit collaboration with Olumide on the track Omo Ope, it’s been from one high point to the other, and he clearly has no signs of stopping. From back-to-back hits to awards that still keep rolling in, to releasing his sophomore album Work of Art in June last year, to filling the 02 arena for his concert, it’s safe to say that his accolades would have his shelf breaking into pieces if they could all get stacked into one. Hit tracks such as Amapiano and Yoga reached number one across streaming charts and on TurnTable Top 100 to add to the already impressive achievements under his belt. Nominations and awards weren’t in short supply for him in 2023, with multiple nominations at the 2023 Headies awards, securing a win in the “Next-Rated” category and the “Album of The Year” category. Along with awards, his hit track Omo-Ope also broke the record for the most weeks spent on the Turn-Table official streaming chart. Asake was among the most sought-after artists for collaborations and show performances locally and internationally. His rise to stardom has been nothing short of spectacular, as it’s every upcoming artist’s dream to reach such heights and make themselves known to the world.

Davido’s Timeless Album

If there’s an album that was most anticipated and also lived up to its expectations, there’s no doubt that it would be the Timeless album from one of Nigeria’s biggest entertainment exports, Davido. A masterpiece that housed hits such as Unavailable, Feel, Na Money, Kante, and No Competition, to mention a few. Released on March 31 2023, Timeless, which is Davido’s 4th studio album, wasted no time taking over. Within four days of its release, Timeless racked up 22 million streams, beating the previous record of 18.8 held by Love, Damini. Along with the album getting nominated at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards for “Best Global Album”, its impressive feats didn’t just end there. The hit track Unavailable went ahead to be the first song to amass 100 million streams on Spotify, as well as also getting nominated at the Grammys, but this time, it was nominated in the “Best African Performance” category, making it the first time he has ever been nominated. The Timeless album also holds the record for the biggest first-day streams for an African album in Apple Music history and “Highest Charting African Album” in US Apple Music History. The superstar has had a tour for the album and performed at numerous locations outside the tour venues, where he has lit up stages and given his fans moments to hold dearly for a long time. 001, as Davido is often called, surely did something right when cooking up this album, that’s certain, especially at a time when he was still mourning the loss of his 3-year-old son, who passed in November 2022. The tragic event led to him having a five-month hiatus from social media before returning with one of the best albums for his fans. Davido is known as one of the biggest artists from Nigeria and Africa in general, and this album, along with its achievements, has shown us why he is regarded as such.

Untimely Passing of Rising Star, Mohbad On September 12 2023, the Nigerian entertainment world woke up to the news of the tragic passing of one of its vibrant upcoming artists, Mohbad. Mohbad, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, was a fast-rising rapper and singer formerly signed to “Marlian Records”, a label formed by Naira Marley. In 2022, Mohbad parted ways with the label and became an independent artist. Mohhad was said to have given up the ghost on September 12 2023, after being administered a Tetanus vaccine by a nurse who was later found to be an unlicensed nurse upon investigation by the Lagos State Police Command. Two days before his untimely passing, he had been performing at the D’General’s Bitters Ikorodu Show, along with Zlatan, Poco Lee, Nasboi, and a few other artists that graced the event. Allegations arose, which had fingers pointing towards his former label boss, Naira Marley, and his associates being involved in the death of Mohbad. His death brought about a social movement, “Justice4Mohbad”, which was a protest concerning the events that led to his demise. The protest caught the attention of international rappers such as Meek Mill, Lil Durk, and Kodak Black, who also paid their respects to him. A number of allegations came up and led to the ban of his former label’s music catalogue from being played by several radio and television stations. According to Mohbad’s mother, she believes her son was murdered, and there’s more to this than what they are actually telling the family and the general public. Bella Shmurda, his best friend, vowed to make sure that justice is served and that his friend’s death wouldn’t be for nothing. The news of Mohbad’s death and the circumstances surrounding it had everyone glued to their devices as there was always breaking news and updates about the case, whether it was true or false. Mohbad was laid to rest the next day after his death right there in his hometown in Ikorodu. The sudden burial was done according to the Yoruba land tradition of burying a person early since both parents are alive. Despite being buried a day after his death, his body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, by the Lagos State Police Command for an autopsy, which was carried out and completed on the same day. Since his death, his songs have received more airplay and also broke into the Apple Music Chart. During the week of September 29 to October 5, a massive 2.3 million views were accumulated. Another impressive feat after his demise was securing a record with six songs on the TurnTable Top 100 chart. His EPs, Blessed and Light, also received many streams, and his single Ask About Me proudly claimed the number one spot on the chart. Nigerians still mourn greatly and still work towards getting to the root of what led to his painful passing.

Nollywood Exploits Lateef Adedimeji: Jagun Jagun The Nollywood industry has been delivering major blockbusters year in and year out; it’s really something to be proud of. From the story to the production, it’s all been a spectacle for movie lovers. One of the most outstanding movies of the year is Jagun Jagun. A movie with a star-studded cast of Femi Adebayo as Ogundiji, Lateef Adedimeji as Gbotija, Odunlade Adekola as Jigan, Ibrahim Yekini as Gbogumni, Bukumi Oluwasina as Kitan \ Agemo, Bimbo Ademoye as Morohunmbo, Fathia Balogun as Erinfunto, Mr Macaroni as Moyale and many more, Jagun Jagun really delivered all the drama, and action fans all over the country and beyond expected. The movie tells the story of a warlord who begins to feel threatened by the potential of a young warrior, Gbotija, whose aim is to avenge the death of his father. Ogundiji has always been a dictator who succeeded in snatching a lot of kingdoms for the wrong leaders. The movie gained much success after its release on August 10, 2023 on the Netflix. It went ahead to earn 2,100,000 views in just its first three days and 3,700,000 views by August 20, 2023. Its views and achievements made it one of the top 10 most-watched non-English movies in the world during that period. An outstanding act was Lateef Adedimeji, who was the protagonist of the movie; one would think he was a warrior in his previous life. With his emotions and the actions he brought to it, he definitely made the entire role his own. Lateef is always known to give his all in each role he plays and this movie was one of those in which he didn’t fail to give us what we all expected from him.

Dakore Egbuson-Akande: A Sunday Affair Released on February 14 2023, A Sunday Affair was Nollywood’s Valentine’s package for movie lovers. A romance movie centred on a love triangle, A Sunday Affair tells the story of two lifelong best friends, Uche and Toyin, who fall head over heels in love with the same charming man, Sunday. Such an affair tests the loyalty between the two friends, and with time, they face the heartbreaking truth as it is finally revealed. The cast brought together to create this showpiece include Nse Ikpe-Etim as Uche, Oris Erhuro as Sunday, Dakore Akande as Toyin, Eku Edewor as Mrs Oyeyemi, Alexx Ekubo as Femi, Hilda Dokubo Mrs Okwara, Uzor Osimkpa as Kelechi, Chris Iheuwa as Sam. In the initial stage, the affair between Uche and Sunday began as a onenight fling that took place at Femi and Kelechi’s wedding party, but as time went on, they discovered that they, Uche and Sunday were, in fact, in-laws as Uche was the sister of Kelechi, the bride. At the same time, Sunday was the brother to the groom, Femi. Sunday and Uche had so much sexual tension that it could be felt by their respective siblings just by merely looking at the way they both looked and talked to each other. While with Toyin, Sunday felt they had a real connection as they actually took time to know each other before eventually getting intimate. Both ladies didn’t know they had fallen for the same man until Toyin made it known to Uche, and even though it killed her, she couldn’t bring herself to hurt Toyin by telling her that he was the man she was involved with romantically. Nse Ikpe-Etim and Dakore Akande were an elite duo indeed. It felt like they cast two best friends in reality to bring life to the script, and it worked out perfectly. Upon its release, it became the most-watched Nigerian movie in the first quarter of 2023, and honestly, who could blame movie lovers for viewing a good movie?

A lot happened in the entertainment industry that this article will not be able to cover, so we will have a few honourable mentions, such as the record-breaking hit Calm Down by Rema, Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cook-a-thon, and Tems Grammy Award-winning moment. 2023 for the entertainment world has had its downs, but it’s safe to say the high points have been way more than the low points.

CULTURE

INSIGHTS ON AFRICAN TRADITIONS Exploring the Rich Heritage of Chewa People in Malawi BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE

The culturally rich country of Malawi is located in the southeastern region of Africa. Blessed with various ethnic groups contributing to the nation’s vibrant legacy, Malawi offers a chance to dive deeper into the African heritage. For this exposè, we delve into the dynamic Chewa culture, known as the largest ethnic group in Malawi, which has “Chichewa” as its traditional language. Let’s find out what makes it unique.

Gule Wamkulu: The Great Dance of The Chewa One of the highlights of the Chewa cultural expression is the Gule Wamkulu, a secret society known for its elaborate dances, especially during special occasions. It is performed by members of the “Nyau brotherhood”, which is responsible for the initiation of young men into adulthood. This eyecatching dance exhibition is majorly performed in the season following the July harvest but can also be experienced at weddings, funerals, or installation of the tribe chief.

Spirituality and Beliefs

Origin of the Chewa Culture

Before the coming of the Portuguese missionaries and their colonisation by the Britains, the Chewa people practised the traditional religion in which they believed in a supreme being. This supreme being, which they believed, was called by various names such as Chiuta, Mpambe, Leza, Mulungu, etc. In recent times, though, it’s been shown that the main religion in Chewa is Christianity, which was introduced in the 19th century.

Chewa Cuisine

Traditional Leadership

Like any other culture, the people of Chewa have had their unique dish associated with their culture for almost as long as it has existed. “Nsima and Ndiwo” is a special delicacy by the Chewa people, who do not feel they have eaten unless they have had some of that for the day. Nsima is a starchy porridge made of corn flour and cold water, while Ndiwo, a relish served with Nsima, can be made with fish, pork beans, greens, or other available ingredients.

The supreme chief of the Chewa people is known as “Kalonga Gawa Undi”. The word “Gawa” means “the one who gives out the land”, and “Undi” means “the one who protects his subjects”.

Journeying through the cultural ancestry of the Chewa people, it is very evident that the traditions of this culture are not just remnants of the past but a living, breathing legacy that continues to shape the present and future. The creativity, unity, and uniqueness rooted in the Chewa culture are proof of the enduring spirit of the people right from the time of inception to their present-day lives. They are never shy about celebrating their cultural heritage with pride and dedication.

The first Chewa kingdom was established sometime before or after 1480. Over time, records of the Chewa tribe have shown its origins in Malambo, a region in the Luba area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are records of their initial migration into the northern, southern, and eastern parts of Zambia before finally settling in the highlands of Malawi.

BY BOLUWATIFE ADESINA MOVIE REVIEW:

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom of Atlantis but isn’t too happy with the gig because of all the bureaucracy. He just wants to be swimming around kicking ass, so we get dialogue like this: “I’m so bored I don’t even know which end of the Brine King I’m supposed to be looking at.” (The Brine King, for those not in the know, is a giant crab who is, in fact, king of one of the Atlantean realms.)

say this for Aquaman and the Lost Itowill Kingdom, the long-in-the-works sequel 2018’s Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa in the title role: I laughed quite a bit. Does it matter that the funniest parts weren’t supposed to be humorous? Not really.

It’s the essential conundrum with this piece of intellectual property from DC Comics. The very concept is absurd, occasionally with a tongue-in-cheek wink. And it’s difficult not to snicker when Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman is forced to spout nonsensical dialogue (“I’ll be sending a cephalopod with you”) and repeat the word “orichalcum”—the legendary metal of Atlantis, which emits greenhouse gases— with deadly seriousness. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives as the DC Extended Universe is gasping its last bit of air before sinking to the bottom of the franchise ocean, never to be seen again. This corner of the superhero market is essentially being shut down as the relatively new chief executive officer of DC Studios, James Gunn, reinvents the universe anew, starting with Superman: Legacy, due in 2025. Given that the latest Aquaman adventure was delayed from 2022 to 2023, it lands in theatres as something of an afterthought. (Reports of reshoots and cast conflict plagued the set.) Although the film, from talented horror movie director James Wan, isn’t quite the whale-size disaster pundits were expecting, it’s also not some grand goodbye to this version of these characters. It’s just a meaningless, standalone adventure.

Arthur’s world is upended when his old foe David Kane, aka Black Manta (Yahya AbdulMateen II), unearths an evil trident in his quest to murder Arthur in revenge for the death of his father. The spirit of a nasty former ruler, now looking like some kind of creepy skeleton, possesses Kane, giving him strength and telling him he’ll receive the vengeance he craves if he helps unleash an army of long-believed-dead monsters trapped in ice. To do this, Kane starts collecting supplies of the precious orichalcum (say that three times fast), a substance that elevates the world’s temperatures. Aquaman must team up with his nowimprisoned half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), the villain from the first movie, to save the day. Momoa himself is a sustainability advocate, and the climate change plot is in keeping with his off-screen activism. It’s well-intentioned, and yet, with all of its talk of magical gas polluting the environment—rather than, you know, human beings—it also somehow manages to downplay the genuine crisis facing our planet. Plus, whatever narrative momentum it had (never exactly propulsive to begin with) stalls when Kane and his plot take centre stage. The arrival of Wilson as Orm livens things up a bit, in part because Wilson is so intensely committed to the part. His self-importance is played just right and counters the gung-ho, macho-man energy that Momoa exudes. Wilson makes a meal out of a tiny beat in which Orm doesn’t know how to move his arms when running because, of course, he’s from the sea.

Speaking of the sea, underwater is where Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is at its best because it’s where Wan and his production team can get creative. An interlude, for example, in which Aquaman and Orm visit a Jabba the Hutt-inspired crime lord voiced by Martin Short while a fishy torch singer croons, is pretty enjoyable. Alas, the The movie starts out with a goofy prologue in back and forth with Black Manta is deadly, which Momoa describes what he’s been up to but not in a fun way, and when real stakes are introduced in the form of peril for Aquaman’s in a version of the “*record scratch* *freeze loved ones, they register like a pebble in a frame*” meme. His character, Arthur Curry, otherwise known as Aquaman, is now a father pond. to a baby boy with his wife, Mera, played by Ultimately, Aquaman and the Lost Amber Heard, whose real-life legal battle Kingdom seems destined to be forgotten, with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, added much like the realm it imagines. another layer of media frenzy around this production. She has a solid amount of screen Inconsequential and, a lot of the time, quite boring, it ends with a poignant summary time, for what it’s worth, but both Mera and of the DCEU: Patrick Wilson picking up a Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna (Kidman), are cockroach, adding it to his sandwich and quickly sidelined by the plot. enjoying the crunch it provides. Arthur divides his time between land Rating:4/10 and sea. In the latter, he serves as King

BERLIN

What made the original Money Heist such an international sensation? Was it the twisty plot, which sees a band of master criminals hiding secrets and making shocking choices before, during, and after a robbery? Or creator Álex Pina’s clever structure, which jumps around in the narrative timeline to keep viewers from learning key details too soon? Or maybe the colourful characters, each sporting the name of a major world city? All of the above were factors, sure. But so was this: Money Heist looks amazing. The dynamic cinematography and glamorous locales still stand out in the Money Heist prequel miniseries Berlin. Even at its dullest— and there are stretches in the middle of this overlong eight-episode run that slow to a crawl— the show has the flash and polish of a blockbuster movie, shot in ritzy locations in and around Paris and Madrid. Netflix subscribers will feel like they’re getting their money’s worth. But here’s the hangup: Those subscribers might be better off looking at the pictures and ignoring the words. Compared to its parent series, Berlin has a fairly flat plot, played out by a collection of broadly drawn antiheroes who aren’t as fascinating as Pina and primary collaborator Esther Martínez Lobato seem to believe. Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso), a.k.a. “Berlin,” first appeared in seasons one

WATCH OF THE WEEK and two of Money Heist as a bitter mastermind, treating people like puppets while helping his brother engineer a raid on Spain’s Royal Mint. Season three then jumped back into Berlin’s past, with flashbacks showing him to be more of a gentleman thief and a happy romantic. It’s this Berlin who anchors the spinoff, which follows him and an inexperienced team of specialists as they attempt to swipe over $40 million worth of jewellery from an auction house. As with Money Heist, Berlin uses the caper itself—the planning, the execution, and the aftermath—as a way to get to know the criminals. The new series isn’t as structurally complex as its predecessor, but there are flashbacks sprinkled throughout, some of which tell the story of Berlin’s crew. Unlike Money Heist, though, these characters—pulpy archetypes, mostly—ultimately don’t have that many depths to plumb. Berlin himself likes to say that his two main interests are huge paydays and love. This series follows that

lead, spending as much time on romance as on robbery. The ringleader swoons over a woman, Camille (Samantha Siqueiros), who starts out as just a stooge in his plan. Berlin and Damián philosophize cornily about the importance of finding someone to devote oneself to, saying together, “You cannot refuse a single moment of love!” All of the love stuff really bogs Berlin down. After setting up the premise in a zippy first episode, Pina, Martínez Lobato, and the writers typically spend only a fraction of each subsequent chapter on the progress of the jewel heist and the rest on long scenes of the characters sniffing around each other with amorous intent. To be fair, there’s some precedence for all these emotional underpinnings in the original Money Heist. One big reason why Berlin himself became a breakout character in that series is that he seemed like an icecold villain until he gradually revealed his softer side and his tragic trajectory. Berlin is meant to be a breezier adventure for him as a lighthearted rogue. (Multiple Berlin episodes end with what are effectively music videos, adding to the looser vibe.) But none of the love stories here are as exciting as the classic Money Heist looparound scenes, where the characters seem to be in a desperate situation before the writers cut to a flashback showing how they’d already anticipated the danger and engineered a solution. Those mini-twists are always fun, especially when set against the pretty European scenery. These are Berlin’s precious gems. They’re just too rare and too damned difficult to extract.
