FASHION TRENDS

What’s In and What’s Out This Season BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

I

t’s the season to be stylish! The holiday season is clearly upon us as we find ourselves engulfed in the warmth of glittering lights and upbeat songs. Whether participating in virtual celebrations, quiet family meals, or holiday get-togethers, your wardrobe selection is a major factor in bringing happiness. Let’s explore the festive fashion scene for 2023 and discover what’s in and what’s out.

WHAT’S IN

1

. VELVET SOPHISTICATION

2

. PEARLCORE

The first trend that comes to mind this year is the appeal of velvet. Velvet isn’t just a fabric option; it represents luxury that can be found on jackets, dresses, and accessories. It’s an obvious pick for anyone looking to make an unabashedly bold statement because of its soft feel and spectrum of vivid hues.

If there is one trend on your list that you should try out, make it pearlcore. You probably already have a few pearly pieces in your closet, so why not wear them to your next holiday gathering? You can’t go wrong with timeless yet stylish pearl drop earrings or shoes with pearl-encrusted straps if you want to ease into the trend. You can even opt for a full-on pearl outfit if you want to wear pearls with everything you wear.

3

. MISMATCHED MAGIC

The boredom of perfectly matched ensembles is over. The mismatched magic is the main theme this season. Play around with contrasting colours, patterns, and textures to put together a visually arresting ensemble. Enjoy a fun mash-up of fashion elements to express your individuality and unleash your creativity.

4

. SHEER ELEGANCE

5

. BOWS AND RIBBONS

In the 2023 festive season, sheer fabrics make a triumphant comeback. They are subtle yet seductive. The sheer elegance trend lends a mysterious touch to festive ensembles, whether they take the shape of translucent sleeves or a delicate overlay on a dress. The secret to creating a smart yet alluring appearance is to strike the right balance when combining sheer and solid pieces.

Using bows and ribbons, add a whimsical touch to your holiday clothes. These whimsical elements, whether they’re on your dress, in your hair, or on your shoes, give your ensemble a charming touch. It is the ideal approach to spread happiness and stylefully commemorate the season.

6

. MONOCHROMATIC MASTERY

In 2023, monochromatic mastery becomes a major feature of celebratory fashion, embodying the essence of simplicity. The wearer creates an impactful and elegant outfit by sticking to a single colour scheme, turning it into an art form. Making a lasting fashion statement is made easier with this trend, which goes beyond the norm.

7

. “QUIET LUXURY” JEWELLERY

We expect to see the “quiet luxury” trend carry over to jewellery this holiday season. No, wearing fashionable pieces is not required. Consider timeless pieces that enhance your holiday ensembles, such as delicate necklaces, gold hoops, and plain statement earrings. These accessories elevate your celebratory ensemble without taking over.

CONCLUSION WHAT’S OUT WHAT’S OUT

Say goodbye to unnecessary adornment, and outfits that are too complicated. This season, outdated styles are replaced with sustainability and simplicity.

It’s important to remember that you should incorporate your unique style into the trends as you go through the varied options for festive attire. Making an impression wherever you go is guaranteed if your clothing embodies the happiness and energy of the occasion.

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL START WITH 2.FOREPLAY Sometimes, a fast finish results from rushing into the main event. Long-term foreplay not only creates anticipation but also gradually raises arousal. To make the final act more gratifying for both parties, explore each other’s bodies, express your wants, and allow the anticipation to build.

THE STOP-AND-START 3.METHOD The stop-and-start approach is something to consider if you feel things are moving too quickly. Pause for a moment, letting the arousal drop a little, and then start again. This method makes lovemaking a sequence of peaks and plateaus for increased pleasure while assisting you in keeping control and extending the experience.

any relationships place a high value on intimacy, and both partners M frequently want to prolong those intimate moments. You’re not alone if you want to cherish every intimate encounter and go beyond the

quickie. This article will discuss six valuable hints and techniques to help you last longer and, most importantly, make the experience go smoothly, making you feel more satisfied and connected.

Changes in roles not only make things more exciting but may also make things last longer. Certain positions inherently lessen sensitivity, allowing you greater command over the tempo. You may create a more lasting and pleasurable experience by experimenting with different angles and movements to see what suits both parties the best.

KEGEL EXERCISES MEN 5.FOR Not only women can benefit from Kegel exercises; they’re also helpful for men. Kegel exercises, which strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, can help with ejaculation control. You can improve your overall sexual enjoyment and your stamina by including these workouts in your routine.

MINDFUL 1.BREATHING

OPEN 6.COMMUNICATION

Mindful breathing is a simple yet effective way to extend intimacy. You can lower your heart rate and better regulate your arousal by paying attention to your breathing. To enhance the pleasure and strengthen the bond between you both, encourage your partner to join you in syncing your breathing and creating a shared rhythm.

Being open and honest with your relationship may be the most important advice. It creates a friendly and understanding environment when discussing your preferences, desires, and worries. You can collaborate with your partner to create an intimate encounter that satisfies both of you emotionally and physically by being honest about your needs and listening to theirs.

CONCLUSION

Physical and emotional factors must be considered to go beyond the quickie. Couples can experience more satisfying and prolonged sexual moments by focusing on foreplay, experimenting with positions, using the stop-and-start method, including Kegel exercises, breathing mindfully, and keeping lines of communication open. It’s important to remember that enjoying the journey together and forging a stronger bond outside the bedroom is just as important as the final goal.

INNOVATIVE FLAIR

Adenike Ogunlesi’s Impact on Children’s Fashion

F

ashion entrepreneurs in Nigeria are working hard to improve and grow children’s fashion, which is helping the entire fashion sector. The focus is on designing fashionable, colourful apparel for children that emphasises originality and sophistication. Leading this movement is Adenike Ogunlesi, a fashion entrepreneur well-known for her significant contributions through her brand Ruff ‘n’ Tumble. From humble beginnings, she painstakingly developed Ruff ‘n’ Tumble into a prestigious brand in children’s fashion, exhibiting an extraordinary fusion of originality and quality. In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Adenike Ogunlesi talks about the nuances of children’s fashion in Nigeria, highlighting the development, difficulties, and inventive spirit that drive the sector ahead. Diving into her business path, Adenike recounts how Ruff ‘n’ Tumble

COVER Ruff ’n’ Tumble is synonymous with children’s fashion in Nigeria. What inspired you to specifically focus on designing clothing for kids? The story of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble started when I realised I needed to travel outside Nigeria to find good quality, durable and stylish clothing for my three children. I started by making pyjamas, and it gradually grew to become what it is today. On the journey, I discovered there was a real need for global quality clothing for little children locally, so I became curious and started asking more questions, and to my surprise, I wasn’t the only mother with this need. There were lots of mothers who wanted good quality, trendy, durable clothing for their children. The fact that it was locally available, accessible and convenient to bring the children in-store to fit the clothing felt like I had invented sliced bread! With the realisation that there was an existing opportunity, my desire to create value and build a brand that catered to the needs of the customer (the parents) and the consumer (the children) came alive. This opportunity also lent itself to show the possibilities that could exist in the industry on a local level.

deep understanding of the target audience. We focused on building a brand identity and storytelling. We were very clear on communicating the values, mission, and vision of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, fostering a connection with customers. We emphasised high-quality products and unique, attractive designs to stand out in the market. In addition, we prioritised the customer experience; I stand on excellent customer service to build trust and loyalty. We’ve been able to engage with the local community through events, sponsorships, and partnerships, and we have also utilised a mix of marketing channels, including social media, traditional advertising, and digital platforms, to reach a diverse audience. Implementing an effective e-commerce strategy to tap into the growing online market across all our locations

“In the kid’s fashion industry, we stay ahead of trends through research of global trends, local tastes, and nuances. It’s fashion. Being innovative and authentic.”

The name Ruff ‘n’ Tumble is unique and catchy. What inspired the choice of this name for your children’s clothing line? A friend of mine – my neighbour at the time, said to me that she was going to do a teddy bear festival on the grounds of the National Museum Kitchen. She said she was looking for somebody to make clothing in ankara. I said you are looking at the person. I’m the person who’s going to do it for you. She said, under what label? I said I don’t know. I will find a label after, but I will make the clothes. She said, what will we write in front of your canopy? She asked because she had a degree in marketing and graphic arts or something like that. I said I wanted to make clothes that set children free. I’m tired of looking at children – wearing clothes they can’t breathe, move or play in. So I said, I just want clothes children can rough around in, you know? And she said, OK, I’ll draw a drum with children tumbling out of the drum. Considering your initial challenges selling clothes from the trunk of your car, how did you strategically position Ruff ‘n’ Tumble to become a prominent brand in the Nigerian children’s fashion industry? The first step to the success of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble was that the brand was solving the problem of many parents like me who had great taste and wanted quality clothing made available to their kids locally. The strategy still remains creating top-notch outfits that can stand headto-head with global brands. We keep up with this quality and create awareness online and offline. That is how we’ve gotten to become the industry leader. In the competitive world of fashion, especially for children, how do you approach staying ahead of trends and maintaining the brand’s relevance over the years? In the kid’s fashion industry, we stay ahead of trends through research of global trends, local tastes, and nuances. It’s fashion. Being innovative and authentic to who we are in our purpose, our choice of colours, textures, fabrics, accessories, and finishing techniques creates a highly desirable product that makes us who we are. The journey from a tiny shop to a national brand is impressive. What were the key marketing strategies that played a crucial role in establishing Ruff ’n’ Tumble as a household name? Building a children’s shop into a national brand like Ruff ‘n’ Tumble involved a combination of strategic planning, marketing efforts, and a

Children’s fashion trends can be dynamic. How does Ruff ’n’ Tumble stay attuned to the evolving preferences of young consumers, ensuring your designs remain appealing to both kids and their parents? The fashion industry is generally fastpaced, but our products are more timeless, comfortable, and authentic, unlike the general fashion industry, which has fastpaced designs. We also stay informed on our customers’ preferences with the help of rich data that is reported, analysed and shared with cross-functional teams in real-time, enabling us to make data-driven decisions that solve the problems of the customer/ consumer and ensures premium customer experience. We keep innovating and researching to understand global trends, local tastes, and nuances, as well as utilising data from customer surveys and focus groups to make business decisions that meet the needs of our customers. Ruff ’n’ Tumble operates in major Nigerian cities. How do you tailor your designs to cater to the country’s diverse cultural and regional preferences? We currently have 15 stores across Nigeria: Lagos(8) Ikeja GRA Store, Palms Mall Lekki, Circle Mall Lekki, Ikeja City Mall Alausa, Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, Ikeja, Novare Mall Lekki, Opebi Store, Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall - Surulere. With the brand called TIMOTI- WA (which means ‘Where I come from’) that fuses ankara, adire and other indigenous fabrics in a collection that is sold in the Ruff ‘n’ Tumble stores, we are able to cater to the cultural needs of each region.

behaviour, trends and curate personalised customer experiences. We also have an e-commerce link to shop from anywhere in Nigeria by just clicking the link on the @ruffntumblekids Instagram page. As a fashion entrepreneur, how do you balance the artistic and creative aspects of designing children’s clothing with the practicalities of running a successful business? We are a customer-focused brand. We make our products with our customers- children in mind, so it’s easy for us to balance our creative expressions and the practicalities of making clothes for children. I ensure our designs are visually appealing and practical for the dynamic needs of both children and parents. It involves integrating vibrant colours, comfortable fabrics, and playful styles to resonate with children’s preferences. Simultaneously, I prioritise durability and ease for parents, creating a harmonious blend where creativity meets practicality, resulting in clothing that looks good and stands up to the energetic nature of kids while catering to the convenience of parents. Ruff ’n’ Tumble has a factory and warehouse. How do you maintain quality control and ensure that the production processes align with the brand’s commitment to excellence? Ruff ‘n’ Tumble upholds uncompromising quality control through a meticulous fabric selection process, continuous training sessions for our production team to ensure alignment with the brand’s standards, rigorous evaluation of prototypes and samples, and a commitment to continuous improvement driven by customer feedback. This approach is integral to sustaining the high standards synonymous with Ruff ‘n’ Tumble. Being a judge on Lions’ Den, you have insights into budding entrepreneurs. What advice would you give someone looking to start a career in the Nigerian children’s fashion industry? My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to explore Nigeria’s fashion and clothing industry is to be clear on your values and principles. The good book says whatever your hands find to do, to do it well. Do not compromise on quality and excellence. As William Foster says, “Quality is never an accident, it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skilful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives”. I believe that there are seasons and phases. Everything happened as it did, and when it did, to help me to become my truest, most authentic and highest expression of myself. The Nigerian fashion industry has seen notable growth. In your opinion, what role does children’s fashion play in shaping the overall narrative of Nigerian fashion globally? Children’s fashion reflects the diversity and creativity inherent in Nigerian culture. It serves as a dynamic expression of the country’s unique aesthetic and prints, contributing to the global recognition of Nigerian fashion as bold, versatile, and culturally rich. At Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, we have collections dedicated to celebrating Nigerians’ vibrant prints like ankara and adire. The nation gains international attention as children wear these clothes for holidays outside Nigeria. It elevates Nigeria’s fashion profile and contributes to the global conversation about inclusivity, cultural representation, and creativity in the fashion world.

“Ruff ‘n’ Tumble is dedicated to empowering and developing local talent in the Nigerian children’s fashion industry, boasting a workforce of over 100 employees.”

With the rise of e-commerce, how has Ruff ’n’ Tumble adapted to the changing landscape of online shopping, especially in the context of children’s fashion? Ruff ‘n’ Tumble is fully plugged into exploring tech solutions that can optimise its business operations and create opportunities for better service delivery. We are already currently exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to predict our customer

GIFT GUIDE

JOYFUL GIVING A Guide to Thoughtful Gift Ideas to Spread Festive Cheer BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE

T

he festive season is here again, the time of cheer, the most anticipated season of the year. Despite the coldness of the season, it also comes with the warmth of joy, laughter, and the spirit of giving. At this time, even though it’s going to be a delightful experience to shop for the perfect gifts for your loved ones, it’s undeniable that the stress of finding a suitable item can be overwhelming at times. Therefore, this guide will help you figure out the right gifts to get them.

PERSONALISED SOUVENIRS When it comes to gifts, personalising it would mean a lot to friends and family. Items such as engraved pieces of jewellery, monogrammed mugs, and personalised photo albums add a special touch that shows you put in effort to create a long-lasting physical reminder for them.

HOMEMADE TREATS AND GOODIES Bring out the inner chef hidden inside you and whip up a batch of homemade cookies, jams or any delectable treats you are exceptionally good at for your loved ones. Get it all packaged in festive containers and delight their taste buds.

SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES

Knowing the recipient of the gift and what appeals to them helps make a decision. A month or two paid gym subscription for a gym enthusiast is an intentional gift, so is covering the monthly membership for a book club for a book lover. These types of gifts go a long way in putting a smile on the faces of the receivers.

EXPERIENCE GIFTS

Memories are for life, and when creating them, always make sure it’s the best one that makes them smile when they remember it. Creating memories with your loved ones will always resonate in their minds for as long as they live. Tickets to a live concert, a cooking class, a game in which their favourite team is playing, or a weekend getaway leave an enduring impression on people, sometimes even more than physical gift items.

In addition, there are options for gifting tech-savvy family members and friends with the latest gadgets and devices. There’s always a gadget for every interest. Also, bringing a touch of nature into the festive period with succulent green plants or even herb gardens in beautifully decorated pots isn’t just aesthetically pleasing but also shows growth and life. Above all, let your gifts reflect love, thoughtfulness, and joy. A compassionate gift shows how much you know the people in your life, and you know what they say about the little things; they always matter. Whether it’s a personalised gift or an experience gift, as long as it appeals to them, they will always remember it and smile, knowing that someone knows them to such an extent. Happy gifting!

Gift-Worthy Beauty Creating DIY Beauty Hampers For Loved Ones BY DORCAS AKINTOYE Making a customised DIY beauty basket for your loved ones is a great way to express your affection and creativity while also being a kind gesture. With these personalised beauty hampers, you can design a collection of essential pampering items tailored to the recipient’s interests and tastes. This article covers six fun and simple ways to create gorgeous beauty packages that make great gifts for loved ones.

4

. LUXURY ON A BUDGET

Putting together a luxurious beauty hamper doesn’t have to cost the earth. Search for highquality goods at reasonable costs, and don’t forget about packaging—even inexpensive goods can seem luxurious with a tasteful, understated presentation.

1

. THEME-BASED HAMPERS

5

. INCLUDE ESSENTIALS AND EXTRAS

First, select a theme that aligns with the receiver’s interests. Whatever the theme—be it a beauty enthusiast’s fantasy, a spa day at home, or skincare essentials—a themed approach adds a personal touch. Put some relaxing bath salts, fragrant candles, and a cosy robe in a hamper with a spa theme.

Ensure your hamper covers the basics, such as cleansers, moisturisers, and serums. Next, infuse a hint of luxury with extras like a silk sleep mask, a set of fine cosmetic brushes, or a scented sachet.

2

. CUSTOMISATION IS KEY

6

. PERSONALISED PACKAGING

Make the gift hamper unique to the recipient by adding items that match their skin type, perfumes, or brands of choice. This considerate touch makes the gift more meaningful and demonstrates that you took the time to choose something they’ll love.

3

. DIY BEAUTY RECIPES

Include handcrafted beauty products to add a little of your originality. Homemade lip scrubs, bath bombs, and face masks offer a personal touch and show that you are dedicated to giving a genuinely meaningful and one-of-a-kind present.

PAGE 12

Using custom packaging will enhance your beauty hamper’s aesthetic appeal. Use reusable tote bags, attractive boxes, or baskets. Add a personalised tag or handwritten note to send your best wishes and make the presentation as unique as the contents.

CONCLUSION Making a homemade beauty hamper for a dear one is a fun experience that goes beyond conventionally giving gifts. A collection of beauty products can be transformed into a treasured and meaningful declaration of love with a little imagination and customisation. So explore the realm of beauty, carefully combine various elements, and make a present that will improve their skincare regimen and make them feel good. After all, a personal touch elevates an ordinary hamper into a truly gift-worthy beauty experience.

WELLNESS

Creating Harmony Within Nurturing Body and Mind for a Balanced Life

BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE

T

here’s no denying that to maintain a harmonious balance in life, both body and mind must be in peak condition. The body can’t thrive without the mind being in a good state, and vice versa. We presently live in a fast-paced world where everyone is doing all they can to achieve different goals in different aspects of life, and finding that equilibrium between the demands of daily life and the well-being of our body and mind has become increasingly crucial. Striking a harmonious balance between physical health and mental well-being is not just a goal but a journey, and it begins with intentional care. We’ll explore different practices to help nurture the body and mind, fostering a sense of balance that resonates throughout our lives.

Mindful Nutrition The foundation of a balanced life begins with mindful nutrition. Fueling our bodies with foods rich in nutrients supports our physical health and profoundly impacts mental well-being. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is encouraged and should be embraced to provide the energy and nutrients needed for optimal functioning.

Creative Activities Activities such as painting, writing, music or any other artistic expression are formidable ways to balance the mind. Channelling your creative side and using it to relax brings joy and fulfilment and promotes mental well-being.

Regular Exercise Routine Physical activity is a potent elixir for both body and mind. Engage in regular exercise to promote cardiovascular health, maintain a healthy weight, and release endorphins, which are the body’s natural mood enhancers. Be it a brisk walk, yoga, or weight training, find an activity that brings joy and sustainability to your routine.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Adequate Rest and Sleep This can’t be emphasised enough. The body needs rest to refresh and repair itself. Achieving balance can’t be done if one doesn’t recognise the importance of quality sleep. Establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine and ensure your sleep environment promotes serenity. Quality rest is paramount for cognitive function, emotional well-being, and overall vitality.

Integrating meditation into your daily routine can provide mental clarity and emotional stability. Meditation routine such as yoga helps keep your mind in a tranquil state by reducing anxiety and stress and enhancing your ability to stay present in the moment.

Other methods include taking a break from screens, fostering healthy relationships with family and friends, continuous learning and setting realistic growth goals for yourself. Keep in mind that true balance isn’t about perfection but about creating a healthy foundation that supports your general well-being on the journey of life. That said, creating a balance between body and mind is a continuous journey that requires conscious and consistent effort and self-compassion to empower yourself to lead a harmonious and fulfilling life.

DELIGHT

Crafting Perfect Gingerbread Cookies For The Festive Season

A

BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE

s the holiday season is upon us, there’s nothing quite as delightful as treating your loved ones to a tasteful selection of treats to please their taste buds. A timeless treat that would never stop being a favourite to many is the gingerbread cookie. Always adding a touch of sweetness to the festive moments, we are more than happy to guide you through the steps to preparing mouth-watering gingerbread cookies to keep the sweetness of the season going in your home.

First, we must get a list of all ingredients needed for your cookies.

Ingredients

• 3 cups flour. • 1 & 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger. • 1 & 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. • 1/4 teaspoon salt. • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened. • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed. • 1/2 cup molasses. • 1 large egg. • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. • Icing and decorations as desired. Do keep in mind that the quantities would be different if the number of guests you have in mind is more.

Directions Prepare The Dry Ingredients

Whisk together the all-purpose flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt in a medium-sized bowl. This aromatic blend will form the base of your gingerbread cookies.

Cream Together Butter and Sugar

In a separate large mixing bowl, cream the softened unsalted butter and packed brown sugar until light and fluffy. This step is essential for achieving that perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Add Molasses, Egg, and Vanilla Extract

Incorporate the rich flavours of the season by adding molasses, a large egg, and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Blend the ingredients until well combined.

Gradually Add Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, ensuring a thorough incorporation. This step ensures a consistent and flavourful dough.

Chill the Dough

Divide the gingerbread cookie dough into two discs, wrap them in plastic, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Chilled dough is easier to handle and results in cookies with better shapes.

Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper, ensuring your gingerbread cookies won’t stick during baking.

Roll and Cut Shapes

Roll out the chilled dough to your desired thickness on a floured surface. Use festive cookie cutters to create shapes that capture the holiday spirit. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheets.

Bake to Perfection

Bake the gingerbread cookies in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set. Keep a close eye to avoid over-baking, as gingerbread cookies are best when they maintain a soft and chewy texture.

Cool Before Decorating

Allow the gingerbread cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This step is crucial for decorating, as warm cookies can cause icing to melt.

Get Creative with Decorations

Once the cookies are completely cooled, unleash your creativity with icing and decorations. Let your imagination run wild as you bring your gingerbread cookies to life, whether it’s classic white icing, festive colours, or edible glitter. With these simple steps, you will have created one of the tastiest cookies ever known to humanity, so feel free to share, not just to family and friends but also to the less privileged. Sharing is caring, after all, so do well to show some love to everyone this season and beyond. Merry Christmas!!!

his festive season, ideas for gifts flood the minds of everyone who wants to give out something special. MOVIE REVIEW:

5 Christmas Films for the Whole Family t’s that time of year! Want to get more Ilistening into the holiday spirit in a way that isn’t to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want

For Christmas Is You” on repeat? Check out this list of the best holiday movies to watch with your family, and you’re sure to jingle all the way through the rest of the year or turn into the Grinch — either way, you’re in for a good time.

1. Elf (2003)

me just put it to bed right now: yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Come on: it takes place on Christmas Eve. Run-DMC’s immortal Christmas in Hollis is on the soundtrack. Some have even argued that it’s secretly a remake of It’s a Wonderful Life. Look, you can and should watch John McTiernan’s action classic year-round – but for my money, ringing in the season with the sound of machine-gun fire, C4 explosions and Alan Rickman’s accent sure gives me Christmassy vibes.

4. The Polar Express (2004)

A 2003 comedy starring Will Ferrell as the titular character is an entertaining, lighthearted family film. Ferrell gives a strong performance as Buddy the elf. He discovers that he is actually a human raised by elves and goes to New York in search of his true family, while holiday hijinks follow him wherever he goes. In today’s world of increasing cynicism, this film is an excellent reminder of just how fun the holidays can be.

2. Home Alone (1990)

This 1990 comedy is a pop culture staple. The plot centres around Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, a kid who his family leaves behind while they go on their Christmas vacation. Hilarity ensues as Kevin basically acts out every kid’s wildest fantasy. This film skyrocketed Culkin to stardom, and the iconic mirror scene is one of the standout moments in recent holiday pop culture memory. This one is absolutely a must-see.

3. Die Hard (1988)

It’s up there with ‘Is a hot dog a sandwich?’ as one of those goofy online debates that’s so played out your eyes cross whenever it hots up again, so let

WATCH OF THE WEEK

RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ glows and captivates throughout the film.

Of course, everyone is going to compare the new Beyoncé film to the other concert movie put out this fall by a heavily-sequined pop megastar with one of the biggest tours of the century. Forget Taylor Swift, though. Better comparisons for Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé might be Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy. This one is a superhero movie all the way.

Robert Zemeckis sprinkled his familyfriendly magic on this performance-capture animation starring Tom Hanks in multiple roles, including narrator, train conductor and Santa Claus. This one ticks a lot of boxes for Christmas fanatics, including reindeer, elves and a whole heap of snow. Zemeckis would later revisit the uncanny valley of the holidays with the Jim Carreystarring Disney’s A Christmas Carol, but for my money, this first crack at mo-cap holiday cheer is the perfect holiday heartwarmer.

5. Love Actually (2003)

The film that single-handedly turned Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You into a cultural juggernaut, Richard Curtis’s sprawling London ensemble piece is so sticky sweet that it’s easy to forget that each bit of holiday cheer is counterbalanced with characters destined for the naughty list. From Alan Rickman’s philandering editor to Hugh Grant’s assistant-seducing Prime Minister and Andrew Lincoln’s borderline stalker, most vignettes balance the sugar with some truly bitter spice. No matter. As Bill Nighy’s ageing rocker says, Christmas is all around it. And it takes a bit of naughtiness to make the nice shine through anyway.

There are shiny, bodyenhancing costumes, high-flying stunts, constant action, robotic creatures, hightech gadgets and a climactic finale of the hero riding on screen atop a sparkling horse. There’s even an origin story in Renaissance — a pretty good one, too. Directed by Beyoncé herself and filmed throughout her 56-show Renaissance Tour, the movie is about threequarters a concert film and onequarter a behindthe-scenes documentary. The concert scenes are eyepopping and heart-pounding. Granted, making Beyoncé look good on camera is probably as easy a job for a filmmaker as making Nazis look bad, but the 42-year-old singer absolutely

On top of her natural charisma, she goes through a department store’s worth of costume changes in the movie — even including different outfits during the same song. That happens thanks to footage from different cities being spliced together, pretty smartly, if I might add. The cameras probably could have stayed squarely aimed at Beyoncé for the whole film, and no one would have complained, but all the other people and scenery shown on screen make it an even better concert movie. Those extras include scenes showing off dance rehearsals, the technology behind her hi-fi production, and the daunting grunt work of the stage crew assembling the massive show. That stage crew, by the way, was unusually loaded with women.

movie has over Taylor’s — audience members are also prominently featured in all the concert scenes. There might not be a more inspiringly diverse crowd than the Beyhive, and seeing those fans having the time of their lives together might be an even more beautiful sight than the Queen herself. As for the origin story, old footage from Beyoncé’s childhood in Houston and her early work as a performer is dropped in here and there. Along with new footage of Beyonce with her three kids and husband — daughter Blue Ivy gets way more screen time than Jay-Z, which I didn’t especially like — the non-concert footage actually does serve to explain what’s happening onstage. The scenes with Blue Ivy, in particular, wind up being some of the most poignant in explaining who and what runs Beyoncé’s world. It’s all a lot to cram into one film, and ultimately, the 2-hour, 48-minute run time does seem about a half-hour too much. But hey, isn’t every superhero movie too long these days?
