Editor's Note

At the time of writing, the New Zealand general election has just concluded, and the makeup of the Government for the next 3 years has become clear. Congratulations to Mark Mitchell for securing another term as our local representative. Keep up the good work. My own term as Editor for The Millwater Mag is now coming to an end. Due to family and work commitments, I decided to see out 2020, and allow my successor to start strong at the beginning of next year. Therefore, next month I will introduce her as my co-editor for the summer December/January issue, ready for her to take the reins as sole Editor from February 2021. My thanks again to Brian Mullan who was the Mag’s navigator for five years before me. I hope I have lived up to the high standard that he set. I also am very grateful to Sarah & Grayson Furniss for the opportunity. It has been a tough year for us all; here’s to a brighter, more hopeful November.

Our last trip was to Great Barrier and it was full of adventure. The forecast was due to change to a 30 knot north-easterly on Saturday afternoon, so we left on Friday and fished the change of light on the south side of Little Barrier before cruising into Fitzroy for the night. The next morning, we made way to our usual spot for a cray dive, and after the dive we put the stove on to cook some breakfast and make a hot coffee. I continued fishing while I waited for my

coffee, when I heard – fire! The stove was alight. Some quick action with the fire extinguisher put an end to the fire (and the hot coffee) leaving a blanket of white powder all over the cabin. It was a close call and a good lesson for us both. Later that morning, we fished down towards The Pigeons where Seth hooked onto a donkey of a fish. His reel was screaming and we had to drive the boat up on the fish to gain some line back. The fight went on for about 15 minutes and Seth almost managed to get the fish to the boat a couple of times before it took off again. On about his third attempt to get it to the boat, the hook pulled and the fish was gone. This would have been a personal best and very photo-worthy fish, but that’s why they call it fishing and not catching! Make sure you get out there and enjoy the water this season and let’s hope our borders are watertight – tight lines!

Hopefully by now you’ve had the boat out a few times and have been eating some beautiful fresh fish. Already there are good numbers of fish in close and the work ups are lasting longer, with good sized snapper in feeding frenzies underneath. The water is still unseasonably cool, but it won’t be long before the temperature climbs and the Hauraki really starts to fire. November will be the month this happens, so don’t waste any time doing the gardens or promising to take the kids to sports, it’s fishing time!

Mindfulness to settle the mental snowstorm

Keeping our pets safe this Guy Fawkes If your dog or cat gets under the bed or hides in a cupboard, let them. They have figured out what works for them, so there is no need to change anything; just ensure access to their favourite spots, and maybe leave some treats in there for them to show your support.

Have you ever had a snow globe, one of those glass orbs that you shake and then watch the glittery snow falling on a cute winter scene? Remember how the “snow” takes ages to completely settle? Well, believe it or not, snow globes are a great way to understand what is happening in our mind when we try to be mindful or meditate.

Turn some music on so there is a constant sound inside. Pull the curtains so they can’t see anything. If your pet is still unsettled, pop in and talk to us about other options. Products like Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs are extremely helpful for stress and anxiety, and are available without prescription from us. There is also a great deal on these products in store now. Their websites are full of helpful tips, visit www.adaptil.com or www.feliway.com for more information.

Let me explain! Imagine that the globe represents our mind and the “snow” represents our thoughts. Our mind will never be really free of thoughts (because it’s the mind’s job to think, so it will keep generating thoughts no matter what we are doing) but our thoughts can slow and settle, just like the snow in the snow globe. As we go about our various tasks each day, the more we do, the more we “shake” and activate our mind. If you think about this for a minute, you might recognise that when you have been busy, even when you stop your mind is still very much on the go. This is one of the reasons why it’s harder to practice mindfulness or feel completely relaxed while you are doing something else. Literally, the physical activity continues to activate the mind and thinking. What you can do to “settle your snow” is to stop. Sit (or lie!) down. Just be physically still for a few minutes. It’s a really interesting

experiment to notice how many minutes it takes for you to notice that your “snow” is settling – or in other words, to become aware that your mind is slowing down, and the pace and volume of your thoughts are reducing. It will happen most quickly if you stay perfectly still, close your eyes and breathe gently and quietly. But it still might take 5 or 10 minutes - or more. People who have tried meditating often say they find it hard – and this is one of the reasons! Just like you often need to warm up at the beginning of an exercise session and find your body starts to settle more comfortably into the run or swim after 5 or 10 minutes, so it is with meditation. Before we can experience the calmness and peacefulness of mindfulness meditation, we just need to give our snow time to settle.

This time of year can cause many troubles for us as pet owners. Guy Fawkes is rapidly approaching, and it’s never just one night to get through as many people keep some fireworks for birthdays, Christmas and the New Year. If your pet gets worried with all the loud bangs, whizzes, pops, and screeches, then here are some things you can try to alleviate their anxiety.

Make a den for your dog or cat; a cardboard box with a blanket inside is usually sufficient. If your dog normally has a crate then cover it with large blankets.

There are medical options we can try, but we’ll need to examine your pet so try all the easy stuff first. As always, we are here to help you and your pets, so pop in and discuss your concerns with us and together we can find a solution that works for everyone.

Enzogenol average age of 82 years. The seniors who took Enzogenol over a six-month period experienced a five-fold reduction in loss of vision acuity compared to the control group. Furthermore, distant vision in the Enzogenol group significantly improved. Science has shown Enzogenol supports cardiovascular health, reducing DNA damage and protein oxidation. Healthy volunteers taking Enzogenol for 12 weeks were found to have improved the elasticity and overall health of their blood vessels, and average systolic blood pressure was reduced from 130 to 123.

Enzogenol is an amazing product extracted from the bark of Pinus Radiata trees that grow in large pine forests in the central North Island of New Zealand. Why is it amazing? Because it’s a supplement that contains the full spectrum of water soluble, health promoting polyphenol and flavonoid antioxidant compounds with a high concentration of OPC. Why is that good? Here are some of the findings. Researchers at the Swinburne University Brain Institute, Melbourne, investigated the effects of Enzogenol on the brain. The results showed that after only 5 weeks of taking Enzogenol, significant improvements in brain performance and positive changes in brain activities can be measured. Enzogenol influenced these brain interactions, leading to a calming effect and a state of improved concentration.

Professor Young-Hee Kang from the Department of Food and Nutrition, Hallam University, Korea, investigated the effects of Enzogenol on inflammatory processes in lymphocytes, human blood cells and endothelial cells that make up the blood vessel wall. Results showed that Enzogenol inhibited key inflammatory events in this cell culture system. These are events that can take place inside our blood vessels when atherosclerotic plaques are formed, leading to the narrowing of arteries.

Based on the average decline in brain performance with age, as seen in the normal population, the brain science researchers concluded that Enzogenol led to a recovery in functional brain age of 7 to 12 years, i.e. it reduced brain age by up to 12 years!

And it’s not just the adults who benefit. Enzogenol supplies optimal nutrition that supports children’s ability to concentrate, focus and behave normally. Parents and teachers consistently report that children with ADHD or autism are calmer and more focused, according to Dr Leila Mason, biomedical paediatrician, Auckland.

The effects of Enzogenol on eyesight has been investigated in a randomised controlled study of senior volunteers with an

Millwater Book of the Month The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follet The Evening and the Morning is a prequel novel to Ken Follet’s mega million-selling novel, The Pillars of the Earth. Set in the year 997, life is harsh for people living in England at the end of the Dark Ages. They face attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. The novel follows three main characters. Ragna, a Norman noblewoman, who travels to England to marry a mighty warrior. Edgar, a young boatbuilder whose life is changed forever in a Viking raid. Then there is Alfred, an educated monk who dreams of transforming his church into a learning centre to enrich people’s lives. These three characters’ lives become intertwined, and they come into dangerous conflict with a wealthy bishop who is determined to do anything to increase his wealth and power. When they get in the way of his ambition, he sets out to have his revenge. This is an epic story from an author who is a superb storyteller. Macmillan, RRP $49.99

Threads of Gold by Jude Thomas 1890: Lebanese immigrants arrive in the Otago Peninsula, and Billie is the first to befriend them. After a troubled start in life, Billie is now society’s darling. She is happily married with children; she is wealthy and has a thriving fashion business. Billie is passionate and powerful, and she finds herself in the thick of the action: women’s suffrage, workers’ rights and the dress reform movement. Life is perfect for Billie – until it is not. As they edge towards the dawn of the 20th Century, her relationship with her husband cools, she worries about her son fighting in the Boer War, and an old adversary returns to cause problems. Threads of Gold is a well-researched read with a feisty heroine in centre stage, and it navigates all the essential history you would want to know about this period. Eco Tip of the Month You can source compostable baking paper from places like ‘Naturally Organic’ in Albany, and there are also reusable baking sheets on the market that provide a hardwearing non-stick surface over and over again. Standard baking paper has a lining of silicone which means sadly it can’t go in your recycling or your compost and therefore adds to landfill waste, but you may be surprised to learn how often you can reuse that also. Just gently wash in soapy water with the rest of your dishes and save it for your next oven-baked masterpiece. And finally, of course, there is the option of simply smearing your tray in butter or oil and then using good old elbow grease to get it clean at the other end. Silicone moulds can be easier to clean but metal trays would be the better environmental choice. Banish single use items from your kitchen and bake the world a better place! Hayley Crawford With the weather warming and alert levels relaxing, our social calendars are starting to fill up. For the Martha Stewarts amongst us it can be a nice time to be serving home baked treats to our guests and at gatherings, which is a great way to reduce waste rather than buying packaged goodies. When purchasing ingredients, you can bring your own containers and bags to places like ‘Bulk Bin’ in Orewa to cut out unnecessary plastic wrapping, and when it comes to lining muffin trays here is a neat trick that your grandmother may have used. Save the wrapping from around butter or the seal on top of your margarine as they can double as baking paper. Cut to fit if required and pop them into your muffin tray followed by your batter and bake to create a delicious snack as shown.

This month I had the chance to speak with Amanda Abel from Fair Play New Zealand; a local, family-run business dedicated to selling sustainable and fair trade toys for children. Being a mother herself, Amanda was always mindful about the toys she brought into her house for her children. After doing thorough research she became passionate about moving away from mass-produced sweatshop toys and moving towards supporting small businesses who looked after their staff and cared about the products they were making. The Fair Play website offers all sorts of products for children, anything from soft toys, games, and puzzles to wooden trucks. You can also see that a portion of the profit from every sale gets put towards their monthly donations to two amazing causes: Woven Earth and Above Rubies. Amanda hopes to one day open a store where she can sell her products and bring attention to small artisans. In the coming months, Fair Play will also look to attend some local Christmas

Mortgage Matters Interest rates could soon be negative Negative interest rates occur when central banks like the Reserve Bank of New Zealand charge rather than pay banks or financial institutions for funds held on deposit. How will this affect you?

What is a negative interest rate? Interest rates are usually positive, meaning you earn interest on your savings and have to pay it when you borrow.

For everyday borrowers, negative interest rates will mean lower mortgage rates as it will cost less for banks to lend money. Variable interest rates are likely to drop and loans will become cheaper and easier to pay off.

As New Zealand deals with the economic impact caused by the pandemic, there are talks of interest rates dropping into negative territory.

Some think that the bank will pay you to borrow and it will cost to save – but this isn’t always the case.

While there have been cases in European countries of customers having to pay to put money into their savings – this is unlikely to be the case for Kiwis.

What would this change mean for you?

Try cauliflower rice as an alternative to regular rice, or mix it in with cooked brown rice to help up your intake of these amazing veggies. Add cauliflower to your mashed potatoes or just used mashed cauliflower instead. Make a coleslaw with finely sliced Brussels sprouts and add in grated carrot and apple for a little flavour twist. Bok choy is fantastic in a stir fry. Fermented cabbage (unpasteurized sauerkraut and kimchi) has additional benefits as they contain probiotic bacteria that improve our gut health. Add some of these superfoods to your plate daily – your body will love you for it!

They are a superfood! Not one of those fancy, expensive, exotic foods, powders or supplements, but just your common garden variety that we have easy and affordable access to. Superfoods are classified by their nutrient density; in other words, they contain very high levels of beneficial nutrients. They are high in fibre (hello, healthy gut bacteria), folate, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium and phytonutrients, and are especially rich in sulphur-containing compounds called glucosinolates. Glucosinolates are broken down, via chewing or cutting, into an active form that our bodies can use called, isothiocyanates. These are the compounds in cruciferous vegetables that may be protective against cancer.

If you would like help with creating a more healthful way of eating, contact me at paula@nutritionsense.co.nz. Both inperson and online consultations are available. A particularly exciting compound is called sulforaphane (it’s an isothiocyanate found in the highest quantities in broccoli sprouts – it’s worth Googling!). The American Institute for Cancer Research mentioned a series of clinical trials, conducted in China, that discovered that sulforaphane may protect us from various environmental carcinogens by activating cellular pathways that protect our cells and prevent tumours from developing their own blood supply.

Art Speak Who doesn’t love glass art? This November, Estuary Arts Centre will be hosting the 2020 National Glass Art exhibition and awards to celebrate contemporary glass art. Following the disruption of COVID-19 and cancellation of events, this is the first major open glass art exhibition in New Zealand since lockdown. Over 60 works from across New Zealand in a variety of glass techniques, including kiln-forming, casting, blowing, flame-working, and other specialised techniques, will be exhibited. Exhibition work includes pieces from nationally and internationally renowned glass artists Garry Nash ONZM, David Traub, Evelyn Dunstan, Carmen Simmonds, Lisa Bate, Sue Hawker, and Katie Brown. Works will be available for viewing online as well as in person at the gallery, with the majority of works available for sale through the gallery. In Gallery 2, Lizzy Dickie captures 2020; a year of reflection, loss, and hope. Through the artist’s own unique perspective, moments are caught and beautifully presented on paper with ink, pencil, and watercolour. Melissa Bell will be showcasing her intricate and bold botanical acrylic paintings, while in Gallery 4 the Auckland Watercolour Society will be holding their annual Members’ Merit awards. View a range of genres in the fluid, light medium of watercolour.

Bus Trip to Mangawhai Museum The Hibiscus Coast Singers are excited to return to rehearsals, preparing for what is now their first performance for 2020: ‘Homeward Bound’. The concert, initially planned for July, sadly had to be postponed due to the vagaries of COVID-19 lockdowns. The music for the concert centres on heading home and being home, of which everyone has had much experience this year! Robyn Allen Goudge, their Music Director, has selected a repertoire that reflects on the delight of home. The choir is ‘Home on the Range’ and will ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree’. It’s almost Christmas, so they will also share a couple of carols. The concert continues their new tradition of including a wide variety of music! HBC Singers look forward to seeing you at their concert, to be held at Red Beach Methodist Church, 14th and 15th November at 2:00 pm. Entry is by donation, but please book your seat by phoning Robyn on 09 426 6043 or emailing coastsingers@gmail. com. It has been a challenging year, but the Hibiscus Coast Singers are finishing on a high note. The choir will take a summer break, returning early March 2021. Central’s Tips November 2020

The festive season’s just around the corner and everything is starting to grow! Liquid feed the gardens, plant corn and pumpkins, stake up tomato and bean plants and tidy up the outdoors for summer.

Apply our drought fighter Aquaturf Max G to help water penetration and use mulch to help retain that precious water!

The rest of the Garden

• Plant basil beneath tomato plants – this combination is

• Our product for getting through the hot weather when

• Tie up climbing plants including tall enough stakes for tomatoes and beans –summer edibles grow quickly and they can become a tangled mess if not trained up

• Time to set the vegetables and fruit trees up for summer – give them a deep water and layer pea straw or mulch around them

• Liquid feed plants fortnightly with Aquaticus Organic Booster to give plants a good dose of valuable nutrients

• If you have enough space, sow seeds for corn and pumpkins. Did you know that corn is better sown in blocks, rather than rows, to encourage cob production?

• Pot up herbs to take on holiday at Christmas time for

some culinary oomph at the beach or camping ground

• Derris dust cabbages and cauliflowers to help prevent white butterfly caterpillars eating your garden bounty!

soil dries out is Aquaturf Max G. Its formulation helps water penetrate to the roots of the grass or garden soil

• Sweet peas and wisterias put out tendrils that need to be secured; and the quick growing canes of rambling roses should be tied back as they grow

• Paint, stain or scrub the outdoor furniture – this

gives the garden a clean, crisp look ready for the Christmas holidays

Lawns that are growing weeds This is because the grass hasn’t grown strongly enough, or bare patches provided a spot for them to grow. Spray with Broadsword (kills weeds, not grass), then re-sow with grass seed if necessary

New Zealand made; native birds and landscapes painted on silk. *Printed onto aluminium panels *Hand painted silk scarves *Wearable silk art. *Original photography

My silk journey began in 2010 when my sister, a silk artist in Switzerland, suggested I should experiment with silk. "Satherley Silks" started in 2011, later becoming "KayDesignsNZ". I have painted all my life. I studied with Louise Henderson at the Auckland Society of Arts and specialised in art at North Shore Teacher's College. I currently exhibit at Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens and have exhibited at Estuary Arts, Whitecliff Galleries in Parnell, Kitchener Street Gallery and in Switzerland. I paint on silk using a truly exciting technique, which I love for the richness of colour, blending of colours and the excitement, as the dyes are affected by temperature and humidity. I have painted silk scarves, cushions, wall hangings and now Outdoor Art Panels. I began painting birds in 2017 and those paintings are carefully printed onto aluminium. UV sunproof inks are used, gloss laminated, and fully waterproof. These can be screwed onto walls, fences etc., in exposed sites.

My workspace is a large rustic shed, without heating, which actually improves the process; the dyes becoming enriched on the silk when the air is damp. This is the ideal environment for my creative process. I am inspired by my garden, the beach and the natural surroundings of rural north Auckland. Beauty in nature is always uplifting, and expressing it in my paintings brings me joy. Silk is hypoallergenic so can be worn safely by allergy sufferers. A natural fibre that breathes, keeps you COOL in summer and provides non-bulky thermal WARMTH in winter.

EASY CARE Warm hand wash, towel dry, and iron damp to give the best lustre to the fabric. A reasonably hot iron can be used, best ironed on the reverse side especially when gold and silver paints have been used. www.kaydesignsnz.co.nz

Because of lockdown restrictions, Northern Arena has had to adopt a number of restrictive measures to keep operating, including reducing class sizes, spacing out equipment to suit social distancing, and introducing a rigorous cleaning schedule, but the membership is creeping back towards preCOVID levels.

Masked, suitably socially-distanced and mercifully Lycra-less, the groups were shown around by Chase Nutman, the fitness sales manager, who showed off various studios, pools and the general gym area. Most of the ROMEOs were astonished at the size of the complex and to learn that it is probably the largest swimming school in the Southern Hemisphere,

The October outing for the Millwater ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) was to the Orewa Surf Life Saving Club, to learn something about the invaluable work carried out by an enthusiastic team of volunteers and supporters. Founded in 1950, it is now the largest in the country – with 1300 members who patrol Orewa Beach and Wenderholm, plus Muriwai and Red Beach when needed. Training can start from the age of 3, and three generations of membership is not uncommon. Improved technology means that someone in difficulty in the water is more likely nowadays to be rescued by an inflatable rescue boat (IRB) than by a swimmer towing a line. 300

Plans by the Club to celebrate 70 years of service this year were prevented by the coronavirus, but designs are now finalised to replace the currently inadequate and wornout building. The custom-built new property will cater for all aspects of Club activities, including a restaurant and public spaces that will take advantage of the superb location overlooking the magnificent Orewa Beach. Costs will run into several million dollars, so the Club is actively seeking finance through grants, legacies, donations, and events. The Millwater ROMEOs are indebted to OSLSC Committee members Zane Taylor (extreme right in the photo), Andrea May and Gwenda Holster-Dowler for their enlightening presentation and wish them every success in their venture.

So, in an environment with a stable majority government, seeming control of COVID-19, historically low interest rates that are likely to go lower, and increasing returnee and immigration interest from overseas – it seems probable that interest in house purchases will continue to increase in the short term. With this increasing buyer interest and low levels of stock, we expect to see some further increases in local prices between now and the end of summer.

There is a suspicion that the economic impacts of shutdowns, lack of international tourists, job losses and business failures will start to fully kick in sometime in the New Year, at which point there may be some more pressured sales starting. To what extent this impacts on the local or overall market remains unknown; however, our advice remains the same. If you are thinking you may need to sell at some point, make the decision early. If there is a negative swing in the market it could be fast and brutal, so selling while the market is hot at least eliminates the worry of getting a good price for your property.

DID YOU KNOW? You could save over $10,000 in commission compared to other real estate brands when selling a home for $1,100,000. Find out more at mikepero.com/fees/

Property Talk Many of you will have heard the general media commentary recently about the boom in house sales nationwide. Millwater and Milldale have not been immune to this and we have seen strong sales numbers over the last three months. As previously mentioned, these numbers are probably significantly impinged by the relative lack of property on the market, a condition that is likely to continue through into summer and probably well into 2021. We continue to see new listing numbers at lower levels than experienced in recent years, even during the normally-buoyant spring listing period. While we are seeing a small upswing of activity, this is well below the level that is needed to satisfy the current buyers wishing to move to the area.

On the subject of Milldale, we have included sales statistics for this market for the first time. There is significant progress happening in the area with rapidly increasing numbers of residents, houses being completed daily, and sales of property also rocketing along. It appears there are very few sites available with demand again outstripping supply, confirming that new housing in the area remains popular as always. Works continue at pace on the roading infrastructure, with the main access into the subdivision off Pine Valley road reaching some significant milestones. Pricing in the area, which started at a slightly more affordable level than Millwater, has already crept up with larger sites and larger homes now starting to feature more regularly in the sales numbers.

On the subject of buyers, we are often asked if there has been a huge increase in returning Kiwis wanting to buy property in the area. To date this has not been our experience; there have certainly been more of this buyer group, but there have been equal increases in other groups also, with investors, downsizers, and upgraders all well represented. We have heard that returnees make up a higher proportion in other areas and this is most probably leading to displacement from those areas, with those vendors then buying in Millwater and Milldale.

In Millwater, the low listing numbers and higher buyer activity is leading to some very high prices being achieved. The median and average prices are possibly not reflecting this fully just yet, with a higher proportion of townhouse and apartment sales still distorting things a little. Interestingly, sales at the higher price levels (over $1,400,000) are also still going very well. We are still seeing the selloff of some property that has been on the market for some time, keeping the average days-to-sell high. If sales with a days-to-sell of 160 days and over are eliminated, then the average actually drops to around 45 days.

NOW IN SILVERDALE

Millwater ROWENAs The September outing of the Millwater ROWENAs (Retired Old Women Enjoying Nice Afternoons) was very much a last-minute arrangement. I had been waiting to see what the decision would be about moving down an alert level before putting in place the plans to meet.

Thankfully, we were able to have our lunch outing. It was quite interesting; once I sent out the text message asking everyone if they would like to meet for lunch, within a minute the ‘yes please’ replies started appearing.

There were 11 ladies for lunch on a lovely day, the venue being Farida's in Orewa. It was decided to keep it local, and support a local business. The menu choices are varied and everyone enjoyed their lunch. After not being able to meet in August due to lockdown, conversation carried on at a pace, and covered a huge range of topics. We are looking forward to more of our regular monthly outings, uninterrupted by COVID. Stay safe out there, everyone!

Fleas! Get them before they get you! and couches etc. – all nice dark places that flea larvae like to hang out. Diatomaceous Earth is a fossil shell flour that desiccates fleas on contact. It is fabulous to sprinkle in areas that your pet likes to frequent, indoors and outdoors. Just make sure it is food grade. Flee Flea is a daily food supplement that helps to deter fleas, palatable to cats and dogs. It also contributes to a healthy skin and coat . Pet Naturals is just across from Orewa Beach, so pop in after a stroll along the iconic stretch of sand and have a chat with our friendly staff. We have a fantastic range of products to help you and your pet win the battle against the pesky flea! Can't call in? Check out our online store at www.petnaturals. co.nz. Pet Naturals Just the mention of fleas is enough to make you scratch. Here at Pet Naturals we try to rely on a more natural approach to keep these bitey hitchhikers away, so here are a few tips.

292 Hibiscus Coast Highway Ph: 09 427 8122

Start a regime before the flea population becomes a problem. A healthy pet is a resilient pet. A real food diet will go a long way towards great health. Grooming your pet not only detects parasites, it also removes dead fur, reduces matting, redistributes natural oils through the coat and, not to mention, is a great bonding exercise. Using a flea comb daily is an excellent way to catch fleas. Bathe your dog using a good natural shampoo or soap - we stock NZ-made Washbar products which have no palm oil or chemical nasties. They also contain Neem oil, which is a known herbal antiparasitic. Washbar flea repellent is an external deterrent (for use on dogs only). Wash your pet’s bedding frequently in hot water and add a drop of eucalyptus essential oil to the final rinse. Vacuum daily, especially underneath beds

Wentworth College: Small School, Big Advantages Mr Philip Lee is the Head of Wentworth College, a leading private school in Gulf Harbour. He has taught in large schools in New Zealand, and also Wentworth College, which currently has 260 students on its roll. Here, he discusses what benefits a small school gives to students and their families. Wentworth College is small when compared to most New Zealand secondary schools. We like it that way, and so do our parents. Our students benefit from small class sizes and a productive partnership between students, parents and teachers. Parents really get to know the teachers in a small school and challenges can be addressed quickly, and successes celebrated.

It is hard for a child in a small school to “slip through the cracks”. A student’s social and emotional needs are known in a small school and they can be supported. The “quirky” can feel safe and appreciated for their differences. Those who need an “extra hand” can be quietly given support. Many students play a sport out of school hours because someone asks them to join the team. Belonging to a close-knit community is important for developing a sense of safety. Students need to feel a sense of belonging in order to thrive and develop healthy self-esteem and resilience. When they don’t need to worry about being part of the “in-crowd”, they can get on with their studies and develop into who they want to be. Small schools are able to provide individual care. When teenagers have so many changes and challenges in their lives, it is better for them to be in a place where they are known, and therefore can be monitored, acknowledged, and overseen. In a large school, they can become anonymous and lost. Despite what teenagers say, they need and like to be known.

It is a special type of teacher who is attracted to working in a small school. They are aware that they will be known by everyone, both students and their families. They have to be confident, approachable, and highly competent. Small schools are about partnerships between the students, the parents and the teachers. In my opinion, that is why they work so well for teenagers at this key stage in their lives.

On Saturday 14 November we are celebrating Diwali with a free Indian sweet on arrival for everyone and an amazing all-day meal: Bhel Puri (puffed rice snack) with homestyle Mattar Paneer Curry (green peas and cottage cheese curry) served with a paratha and rice, along with an array of condiments, for $25pp. Curry Club @ $25pp This month’s Curry Club on Wednesday 4 November will feature two aromatic and divine curries from the state of Bengal. Our star non-vegetarian curry is Murgh Manso Jhol, a unique preparation of chicken with mustard oil and

potatoes, while the vegetarian version is Dal Kadoo, a flavorful combination of Chana Dal (brown chickpeas) and pumpkin, tempered with fragrant spices. Both curries will be served with chapati, gobind bhog rice - fragrant small grain rice that is unique to Bengal - and an array of delectable condiments. What an amazing feast for just $25pp!

of the value of the property. A property that is rented out on a short-term basis, but not used privately, will not be classified as a mixed-use asset. Expenditure incurred in relation to these properties is fully deductible, though it is possible the residential loss ring-fencing rules may still apply. Once a property is rented out long-term to residential tenants, the residential loss ring-fencing rules will apply. These rules prevent you from offsetting tax losses against other forms of income. They apply to all residential properties and, unlike the loss quarantining rules for mixed use assets, apply irrespective of the quantum of income.

4 Course Wine Dinners @ $75pp Join us on a culinary journey to Romania on Thursday 26 November and enjoy a wonderful 4 course meal matched with fine wines to complement. It is an evening to mix and mingle with other locals and we look forward to seeing you at this event. Themed Brunch Specials @ $19.50pp November will highlight Lebanese brunch special featuring Ful Mudammas – a hearty delicious stew of cooked cannellini beans & chickpeas served with olive oil and cumin. It is traditionally served for breakfast, alongside fresh warm pita bread and hard-boiled eggs. Booking details: Phone: 09 777 6008 Email: dine@xeniagroup.co.nz

For further details please contact Craig Harrison at Quinovic 021 444 5753 or email craigh@quinovicmillwater.co.nz. With New Zealand’s borders being closed at the moment, a number of people who have rented properties on a short-term basis (e.g. Airbnb) are converting those properties to long-term residential tenancies. This raises the question – what are the tax implications?

Craig Harrison | Principal, Quinovic, Millwater https://www.quinovic.co.nz/millwater/

Whether a property is rented out on a short or long-term basis, income received is taxable. But, there are points of difference when it comes to claiming expenses and losses. Where a property is rented out on a short-term basis it can be classified as a “mixed-use asset”. One example of a mixeduse asset is your classic holiday home that is used privately on occasion, rented out on occasion, and frequently vacant. If a property is classified as a mixed-use asset, not all of the expenses are deductible. There are specific rules that scale back the expenses able to be claimed.

NEW RANGE FOR COMBINATION SKIN

There are also “loss quarantining” rules that can prevent any tax losses from being offset against other forms of income. These rules apply to mixed-use assets only if the rent falls below 2%

Pop-Up Showhome – One Day Only!

Purchasing the Right “Chef’s Knife” knife. These can cost between $90 to around $400 plus. Don’t get a cheap cook’s knife as it won’t last, it won’t stay sharp, and it certainly won’t do a good job.

lap pool, automatic louver roof above the outdoor deck for al fresco living all year round, and 2-storey glass wall that commands attention and allows natural light to flood in.

If you spend around $110-$180 ,you will get a really good chef’s knife that will last you over 20 years, will stay sharp, and will do an awesome job in the kitchen. You also need to look after it by not washing in the dish washer, getting it professionally sharpened, steeling regularly, and keeping the blade covered and away from other utensils. Remember that you are only as good as your knife!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. We recommend you to experience this house yourself to discover all the magical features. Visitor registration is now open on the Maddren website, with limited viewing time slots available.

I have helped hundreds of people to buy a good chef’s knife and I do this free of charge. I can also get chef’s knives at my cost price, so please email me if you want any help or advice. I’d love to help.

Register now to avoid disappointment, simply because this house will never open to the public as a showhome again.

Watch my video “How To Choose the Best Chef’s Knife for You” on my Facebook page. I also do a hands-on lessons in my home, for 8 at a time, for 2 hours, to learn how to use a knife like a chef! For your Dinner Parties, Outcatering or Grazing Tables, go to www.culinarylane.co.nz or facebook.com/culinarylane. This month we sadly farewell Maddren’s most popular showhome on 186 Wainui Road, which has been a hot spot for the community to drop in and discover inspirational ideas. But don’t despair! As well as a new Milldale showhome due for completion soon, Maddren has invented the POP-UP showhome, providing a rare and unique opportunity to walk through one of their best builds in Millwater. The owners of this home have generously offered us the opportunity to walk through and view even more Maddren Magic - BUT JUST FOR ONE DAY ONLY!

As a professional chef of 36 years (wow, am I that old?) the most important tool to have is a good, no, great chef’s knife. Sometimes you would have this knife in your hands 50% of your day and on a long shift, this could be 8+ hours. It needs to be sharp, comfortable, well balanced and, above all, it must be great quality so as to stand the test of time. I have some knives that are over 20 years old and still doing a great job for me. I like a light knife with a wooden handle (Victorinox for me) as this is easier on my hand. But a light knife won’t stay sharp for as long as heavier bladed knife. There are so many contributing factors to the right knife for you. Forged or stamped, European or Japanese, wooden or plastic handled, light or heavy, smaller or larger blade – and the list goes on. The most important thing is to purchase a good quality chef’s

Trust Law is Changing

Cancer Cover

Are you prepared?

The cost of life-saving cancer drugs CAN be covered by medical insurance

Do you have a Trust? Are you a trustee of a Trust?

plans which provide very basic cover. The superior plans do provide cover for the cost of expensive cancer drugs in the sum of between $300,000 to $600,000 per year.

In a previous article, we highlighted that the law relating to Trusts is changing. As the date on which the changes take effect moves closer, 30 January 2021, we felt it was a good time to remind you about those changes.

The sad situation outlined in the Herald on Sunday article highlights the importance of working with a specialist insurance adviser who has access to, and knows, the good-quality products and medical insurance policy wordings across the market.

Key Changes The purpose of the new Trusts Act 2019 (Trusts Act) is to consolidate and simplify the law related to Trusts.

If you wish to consider medical insurance and to be guided to a plan that will cover the cost of expensive drugs that are not publicly funded by Pharmac, please contact us.

Two key amendments are: (1) the inclusion in the Trusts Act of "mandatory" and "default" trustee duties; and (2) requirements relating to the management of trust information and its disclosure to beneficiaries. Trustees' Duties As a trustee you should be aware that a trustee must abide by a number of duties. These duties fall into two categories, either "mandatory" or "default" duties. Mandatory duties apply to every trustee, whereas a default duty can be varied by your Trust Deed. These duties are not in themselves 'new'. However, their inclusion in the Act reinforces the core the obligations of trustees. The aim is to ensure Trusts are appropriately managed and can be relied upon without them being open to attack due to poor management and

administration. It is important that trustees are aware of their duties, and to consider whether it is necessary to vary the default duties. You should discuss your particular circumstances with your solicitor. Who are the Beneficiaries of your Trust? The Trusts Act requires disclosure of certain Trust Information to the Trust's beneficiaries. These disclosure requirements ensure that beneficiaries are kept informed. However, a requirement to disclose may pose problems when a Trust has a large number of beneficiaries and has beneficiaries to whom you would not

be comfortable to disclose information. Have you reviewed the beneficiaries of your Trust recently? So, what do I need to do? To ensure that your Trust continues to work for you when the changes comes in to effect, we recommend you turn your mind to whether a review of your Trust is warranted. Remember to contact your solicitor to help you make an informed decision and if you need help call us on 09 421 0559 or email silverdale@simpsonwestern.co.nz. It’s what we do!

While recently enjoying a Sunday morning coffee at Millies, I read in the Herald on Sunday the very sad story of a fit non-smoker who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. The article noted that “…the ‘miracle drug’ keeping Julie alive, known as Osimertinib (Tagrisso), costs them nearly $11,000 a month in New Zealand because it is not funded by Pharmac and it is not covered under any health insurance.” The comment that the cost of this specialised cancer drug is not covered under any health insurance is totally wrong, for the following reasons:

• Drugs that are Medsafeapproved but not funded by Pharmac (such as Osimertinib) ARE covered by a number of medical insurance policies. Conversely, it is important to be aware that there are also a range of basic medical insurance plans that either do not cover the cost of such drugs, or if they do, will cap the cost at a very low level ($8,000-$10,000 per year). For expensive cancer drugs, such cover is therefore largely meaningless;

of the white bit). Earrings were, of course, not allowed. Once a month, on a random day, teachers and principals could suddenly appear at the school gate to check each student through; it was a common practice for us to carry a nail clipper in our school bag. The scene was pretty awkward with girls gathering around, clipping their fingernails out of sight from the authorities.

Additional benefits are: • Strengthening nails • Aiding hair growth • Relieving joint pain

Hilarious! However, I only attended this school for 2 years before coming to New Zealand. Although I immediately grew my hair long after I left, it didn’t last long as I soon realised the benefit of keep my hair short. To date, I still don’t fancy wearing any earrings or jewellery (my husband should feel thankful for this!), and always keep my fingernails short. It may be my personality, but it could also be that education which planted a seed in my life, and I am thankful.

• Gut health • Preventing bone mass loss • Boosting muscle mass • Heart and brain health • Weight loss

The beauty ingredient everyone is talking about. I have been asked this question a lot of late: Would I benefit from taking collagen orally? So I’ve decided to do a bit of investigating. We all have wondered what the hype is all about, and once you start investigating, you come out more confused that before you started.

Other options for boosting your collagen intake is eating chicken skin, pork skin, beef and fish gelatine from bone broth.

Which collagen is right for me and what benefits can I expect to get? Beauty isn’t just skin deep, a glowing healthy radiant skin comes from within. So, treating the inside as well as the outer will get you the results you’re after. What is collagen? Collagen is a protein produced in your body. It provides structure and support to most of your body, but particularly your skin. Sadly, as we age the quality and quantity of the collagen your body produces decreases drastically, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, dull looking, dry and dehydrated skin. This is where taking collagen supplements orally come in. They increase your natural collagen production to improve your overall skin condition.

‘every pet is an individual and deserves to be treated as such’

Time flies! l can’t believe my older son is starting middle school next year. He was only in Year 1 while I started writing in The Millwater Mag! A new phase means a new uniform. I was lucky enough to buy some good second-hand uniform for him from a lovely neighbour. On the day we collected the uniform, he curiously asked, “Mum, what did you wear in middle school?” I would never forget what the uniform looked like. In fact, I still precisely remember a string of rules which applied to the uniform. Despite being founded by an English missionary, the uniform of my middle school is surprisingly traditional Chinese. The style is called cheongsam (similar to qipao, but of course in a much lower profiled as you would have expected as a school uniform). There was a sewing line around the neck, and our hair could not grow any longer than this line. It’s a girls school with no girls growing long hair. Thinking back it was pretty ironic. We couldn’t have our fringe covering eye brows either, therefore everyone had pretty much the same mushroom haircut. The moral is simple; instead of spending time polishing our appearance, we should focus to develop our inner strength and heart, as well as learning the skills to present ourself in a tidy and appropriate manner. For such, there was strict rules regarding the length of the cheongsam, and how high the skirt opening should stop at the thigh. The school rules were famously strict down to every detail, even how long your finger nails could grow (about 1mm

Baked Cauliflower Cheese Serves 6 By using this method, your white sauce will always be velvety smooth, glossy white, and won’t catch on the bottom.

Bechamel Sauce (for Mornay) Ingredients 1ltr milk 100g salted butter

Millwater Recipes

100g white flour Salt & ground white pepper ¼ tsp ground nutmeg 220g grated tasty cheddar cheese 1.4kg cauliflower (cut into 5cm fleurettes/pieces) 100g grated tasty cheddar cheese ovenproof deep dish

Oriental Style Eye Fillet

10g butter 2 medium heavy-bottomed pots (stainless steel, not aluminium)

Ingredients 500g eye fillet 1 onion, sliced 3 tablespoons tomato sauce 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Method

4. In a wok or fry pan, heat up oil in high heat. Remove eye fillet from marinating sauce and pan fry for about 1 minute, turn and further fry for 1 minute. Remove from pan and put aside. 5. In the same pan, fry onion until brown and soft, return eye fillet to pan together with marinating sauce, stir and cook for about 1 minute, depending on how much you want to cook the beef. 6. Serve with rice. Yum!

Happy cooking! Nita Wong

3. Put in fridge overnight, or in freezer. If kept in freezer, can store up to 3 weeks. It is always good to prepare a few batches for future use, just defrost in fridge the night before.

1. Place milk in first medium pot, slowly bring to boiling point & turn off. Melt butter in 2nd heavy-based saucepan on medium heat, when melted, cool slightly before stirring in the flour to make a white roux* using a whisk. Allow to cook for 1-2 minutes on slow heat, stirring constantly but with no colour. 2. Add boiling milk to white roux gradually in 3 stages off heat, whisking at each stage till smooth. Mix in ¼ tsp of nutmeg. Bring slowly to boil, stirring often. Simmer for 5 minutes. During this time keep stirring to make sure it doesn’t catch on base of the pot. Season to taste with salt & ground white pepper (this is a béchamel sauce). Finish with the 220g of grated cheddar cheese and mix through till totally combined (this is a mornay sauce). 3. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add cauliflower & continue boiling for 4-6 minutes, depending on how soft you want your cauliflower cheese to be. Drain cauliflower really well to remove all excess water. Butter ovenproof dish, place in cauliflower, stalk side down. Spoon over hot mornay sauce & top with 100g of grated cheddar. Top with greaseproof paper and totally cover with 2 pieces of tin foil. 4. In a 180°C preheated fan bake oven, place the cauliflower cheese on middle shelf for 40 minutes. Preheat grill to 190°C & grill for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown on top. Serve while piping hot.

1. Cut eye fillet into 2cm thick slices. 2. In a container (or freezer bag for better result), mix all sauces and sugar together, then mix well with eye fillet.

DIY Security Cameras

Your Local Tides - annoy the neighbours! When you're out and your neighbour tells you the alarm has gone off, if you are anything like me you would usually drop everything and head home to see what's going on. What if there was a smarter solution where you can see what's happening from your smartphone? If you look online, there are a number of companies that offer DIY home security cameras. I decided to go with Reolink based on online feedback, which costs about half of the more known brands, but comes with some clever features. One thing I really like is the ability for these external cameras to be truly wireless, relying on the sun to keep the batteries charged. The other feature is being able to automatically activate a siren should it detect movement in a chosen area. From a convenience perspective, if it's your friendly neighbour at the front door or the courier, you can even have a conversation with them via the camera through the phone app, even if you aren't home. Being able to see my property gives me peace of mind, and also helps answer the dreaded question my wife sometimes asks – "Did we shut the garage door?"

I don't for a minute portray myself as a security specialist, but I thought it would be both fun and handy to install security cameras around my home to keep a virtual eye on things when I am out and about. Upfront, I do want to say that my solution isn't something I would recommend if you are looking for a 'bulletproof' security system. To me as a homeowner, external security cameras have two main uses: first, and the most obvious, for security reasons. Just having a security camera visible can make would-be thieves think twice about taking that parcel from your front door. The other use is to alert me to any unauthorised access to my property, especially around blind spots. Unfortunately, my personal opinion is that our bog-standard home alarm systems in most of our homes are impractical. When it goes off, rightly or wrongly, it does one thing well

Silverdale Tennis participated in the nationwide Love Tennis event last weekend which was well attended by locals young and old who had a lot of fun and learnt a few tips about tennis. They were able to enter a prize draw to win an amazing trip with expenses paid to Te Anau, which will be drawn soon. There was also a prize for a ‘guess the number of tennis balls’ and this was won by Callum Hope, who guessed the exact number. Well done Callum! Runner up prize went to Tiana Sweeney, who was a very close second. The kids enjoyed coaching with Damir, games and a sausage sizzle. The weather didn’t exactly play ball, but a good time was had by all. Junior tennis commences for the 2020/2021 season on Saturday 17 October, so if you have a child who would like to have a go, bring them to the Club on a Saturday morning at 9am for assessment by our junior coach Hayden. Ages can start at 6–9 for the 9am session, or 10am for the 10–15 year olds. The annual fee is $180, which includes a court key. Senior Club Days are Wednesday 9.30am for Midweek Mixed, Wednesday evening from 6.30pm, and Sunday morning 10.30am. For further info contact Linda l.waters@xtra. co.nz or 027 2286577.
