C
urtain up, cross-dressing, popcorn stuck in your teeth – it can only mean one thing: �s the season for pantomime – oh yes it is! And so, it begins . . . “hello boys and girls!” – a friendly, painted face welcomes us into the land of the musical rags to riches tale. Panto fully immerses us. We root for the underdog, boo the baddie, help the hero, and hope upon hope for a happy ending. We experience a roller-coaster of joy and pain, tears
and laughter, love and bravery – does all this sound familiar? Yes, pantomime is an exaggerated playing out of being human. An elabora�on of our most familiar emo�ons – even Daisy the cow mimes an excellent ‘sad’! It reminds us of our worst and our best. It brings down our barriers and opens our hearts. Both the audience and the pink cheeked, polka-do�ed cast quickly become our new family; we laugh, sing, and clap along as we embark on a journey of highs and lows. Once again, this year, the Southmead Development Trust will make it possible for 800 guests to experience this wonder. On the stage in the Old School Hall, the Greenway Centre presents the tale of Dick Whi�ngton - the poor boy made good. For local families more memories will be made at what has now become, for many, a Southmead Community Christmas tradi�on. Our suppliers, customers and supporters join us with dona�ons and sponsorship so we can keep the price very low. Each �cket includes a bag of popcorn and a so� drink to give parents and carers a break from ‘pester power’. We receive cash dona�ons at the Greenway Centre and via our online Crowdfunder page ‘Panto for the people’. Our donors, sponsors and supporters feature in our adver�sing, but it’s usually reward enough for them to see the smiling faces of family Christmases made. LOCAL HERO From Trymview Hall
A
new care home in Southmead is asking the Bristol community to nominate ‘local heroes’ for the chance to win a £500 cash prize. Care UK’s Trymview Hall, on Southmead Road, is searching for local people or organisa�ons who go above and beyond for their community, friends or family, and have a posi�ve impact on the local area. The winner of the ‘local heroes’ compe��on will receive £500 and be invited to the opening of the suburb’s newest care home at its grand launch event in January 2020. There will also be two runners-up, who will win £200 for second place and £100 for third. Pamela Arnsmeyer, home manager at Trymview Hall, said: “We all know that one person who organises everything, is always there for others and never shies away from offering a helping hand
– so here at Trymview Hall, we want to say thank you. By Anthea Mustard reathing . . . we all do it, all the �me and only think about it when something goes wrong! Surprisingly singing can help us all, regardless of whether we have a star voice or not. One of the secrets is learning when and how to take a breath. Imagine - this is free and on hand in the Greenway Centre Ac�vity Studio, every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm. All you need is yourself and possibly a sense of humour! We sing a range of songs - whatever the group chooses - Beatles, Disney, Sea Shan�es, folk songs . . . it changes all the �me. Led by Jules, a professional singer, we learn where to breathe and how to extend a breath, plus Jules checks our si�ng posture and away we go with tuneful fun songs. Come along and try it in an informal happy environment - you might enjoy it!

DAWN’S CHRISTMAS POEM Christmas, By Dawn Payne It's that magic time again Families sharing Joy making sure there's a toy for every girl and boy. Frosty finger rosy cheeks sipping hot chocolate, this moment they have been waiting for weeks Chestnuts roasting marshmallow toasting. Is there something missing? Ah yes mistletoe for kissing Apple bobbin ready for fun. Oh what a cheer! someone has won. The tree stands all aglow; little coloured lights cascading from head to toe, and what is at the top so far a brightly shining star! Delights hang, tinsel baubles, chocolate coins candy canes. TRYM TEAM-WORK By Anthea Mustard TEAM SOUTHMEAD
L
ast January some of the Team Southmead volunteers met a dedicated team of Trym Li�er Pickers who, despite the cold, turned out to li�er pick the banks of the Trym and from Doncaster Road up to the source of the Trym. We admired their spirits on this very cold January day and learnt how to do a professional li�er picking job. As good Meaders we promised to keep their good work in ‘Trym’ all year, so it was with much enthusiasm that a small band of us, including lots of enthusias�c children and our two Councillors Helen Godwin and Brenda Massey, turned out in November to use the new Team Southmead Li�er Picking kit and got going. Two supermarket trolleys later, a pile of electricals, some china, and this �me only one syringe (unlike last �me) were carefully disposed off in the correct place and lots of grubby gloves later we cleaned the banks of the Trym. If you love the Mead please please don't let our lovely green spaces be plagued by fly �pping - we deserve and want be�er.

EXTREME ‘HOLE’ GARDENING By Mike Murch SOUTHMEAD RESIDENT
A
�er the contractor had finished the soil sampling ‘holes’ on Glencoyne Square (see last month`s edi�on), “let’s plant some bulbs” she said, and like an idiot I said I would try to source both bulbs and plants. So far so good. I arranged for the Blaise Nursery to supply 800 tulip bulbs and 1600 mixed polyanthus plants, these to be delivered on Saturday morning, 9th November, to Glencoyne Square. Come the day, not only was it absolutely pouring with rain but freezing cold with it. Now when you have that many bulbs and plants they have to be planted then and there. So, some 10 hardy volunteers including representa�ves from the Regenera�on team, local residents, the Architects, and United Communi�es, together with trowels at the ready, in the pouring rain, started what in ‘normal’ weather would have been a ‘doddle’. At the end of just over two hours, freezing cold, soaked to the skin, and I do mean soaked to the skin, covered in mud, we looked on with pride at what had been achieved - no we didn’t! We all couldn’t wait to go home to ‘dry out’. For my part, my hands were so cold I couldn’t undo the laces of my trainers, I shed my soaking clothes and spent half an hour under a hot shower. So, when you pass by Glencoyne and see those floral ‘masterpieces’ remember the ‘Extreme Hole Gardeners’. p.s. at least they didn’t need watering in!! Mike Murch – Head Gardener!
