Swordfish with Lemon Caper Sauce

Ingredients

4 tablespoons butter

1 small clove garlic, finely minced

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon lemon zest

2 teaspoon capers, drained, rinsed and chopped

1/2 cup heavy cream

4 6-ounce swordfish steaks,

1 1/2 inches thick, skin removed

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon seafood seasoning

1 teaspoon fresh chopped parsley salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

Preheat broiler. Oil the rack of a broiler pan and place in the oven. In a small skillet over low heat, melt butter; add garlic, lemon juice, zest, and capers. Simmer for 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Slowly whisk in heavy cream and set aside. Brush steaks with olive oil; sprinkle with seafood seasoning, parsley, salt and pepper. Arrange swordfish on the hot broiler pan. Broil about 6 inches from heat for 6 to 8 minutes until opaque in center, turning halfway through the cooking time. Serve with warmed lemon caper sauce.

Similar to a sound signaling device, the sound signaling appliance is used to communicate when on the open water. The difference is the

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Jigging for Grouper and Mangrove Snapperin Tampa Bay

Deep jigging or vertical jigging is a fishing method that has been practiced around the world but is just now getting acceptance from the saltwater anglers on the east coast. California, Mexico, and Cuba have been yoyo jigging for years and have been very productive.

The introduction of the Butterfly Jigging system several years ago opened the door for other manufactures producing new versions of jigging products.Many of the local companies have also added new jig head designs and soft baits to match the hatch.

Basic:

Find a location with moderate current and look for rocky areas, ledges, or other structures. A good bottom sounder is important to read not only the bottom, but the fish. Position the boat directly over the structure or fish and drop a jig. The weight of the jig is determined by the current and depth of water, so I recommend having a good selection of jigs before startingyou jigging trip.

Technique Grouper:

This simple technique allows you to drop the jig to the bottom, always staying in touch. By this I mean you must always feel the jig, as this will help in hook setting and keeping the jig from twisting around your leader or line.

There are several methods of deep jigging. One is positioning the boat directly over the fish or drifting over the bottom across the rocks or wreck. Always drift parallel to the rocks or wreck. Once the fish are located, it’s time to

decide which jig will work best, metal jigs or jig head with soft plastic bait. Please note that your jig should be heavy enough to always reach the bottom.

When you drift beyond the ledge, rocks, or wreck area, crank up and start another up current drift. Drop down to the bottom, crank one to two turns on the reel,this should get you several feet of the bottomstart jigging by lifting the rod tip up in a quick motion and dropping down again this creates the effect of a wounded bait. Once a fish is hooked, drop a marker over the side or hit your GPS button as this will give you a reference point for your next drift or to do a stationary drop.

When drifting for your best position in the boat, a good point to remember is that when “the wind is in your face you are in the right place.”

Anchoring is another choice if there is a strong current or strong wind, here you have a choice use an anchor or if you have one of the newer trolling motor’s us spot lock. Position the boat over the structure and start jigging, allowing the jig to hit bottom every time.Groupers will follow and attach a jig up to five or six feet from the bottom its best to keep the jig at least several feet from the bottom to avoid losing them to the rocks.

Technique Mangrove Snapper

Mangrove snapper jigging is slightly different in that you are fishing right on the bottomrather thanabove the bottom. A good bottom machine will mark mangrove snapper as they are grouped together. Drop the jig and follow it down on your bottom machine until it reaches the area where the snapper is showing up and start your jigging at that point.

I find that a good grade of clear monofilament line works well and has a thinner diameter than fluorocarbon and a lot cheaper in cost.A tight drag is recommended since you are fishing over structures, and these fish will head for the nearest hole or structure when they strike.Under normal conditions I would use a conventional reel for grouper fishing, but I find spinning tackle to be less straining and easier to maintain the proper motion for longer periods of time.

Tackle Mangrove Snapper:

In shallow waters of 15 to 25 feet I prefer jig heads and soft baits on spinning tackle, medium action rod spooled with 15-pound testFINS Windtamer braided line and a 36inch fluorocarbon leader of 30-pound test if the water is clear I might even go down to 20-pound test leader and make it longer.I only use fluorocarbon leader 30-pound and 20-pound when fishing the shallows or flats for redfish, snook, trout, flounder, or mangrove snapper.

Inshore Insights: The next week or two are prime for snook action. As they transition back into protected bay waters, redfish are also making moves, energized by cooler temperatures and rain. Rising with the Sun: A Day of Fishing and Discovery

Last Friday, I went on a fishing adventure with my friend Tom. Our day began at the dock, where we met at 6:30 a.m. Although we were planning on fishing with artificial baits, I always take shrimp as a backup. Unfortunately, all the bait shops were out of shrimp.

We loaded our boat and set out from the dock around 6:45 a.m. Once we departed, I called the Fort Pierce City Marina over the radio, hoping they might have shrimp in stock. Fortunately, they did, so we promptly acquired three dozen to ensure a successful day on the water.

The boat we had for the day was an inshore boat. I to head north along the river to the old inlet. The entire morning was dedicated to exploring the islands to the north, where we hoped to encounter some promising fishing spots. Since snook season just opened, I hoped to get a snook to come home.

Our first location yielded a few bites, and although I briefly had a fish on, with the dim lighting, we could not identify the species. Additionally, our initial spot was graced by the presence of three curious manatees, adding to the charm of our outing.

We pressed on, continuing to explore the northern islands. As the sun ascended higher into the sky, our surroundings came alive with the vibrant activity of baitfish, birds, and boils. It was promising that we would have a good bite, but to our surprise, it was unusually slow. A fellow Salt Strong Insider called me as he saw me and asked how I was doing. He told me it was a surprisingly slow bite for him,

Nevertheless, our determination paid off, and we managed to reel in three catfish, a few mutton snappers, a baby lane snapper, and two snook. We even managed to lose a few snook.

Brutally Hot, Fishing is on Fire!

Today I am fishing the BBI -Hooked on Kids- Sheridan House Key Largo Classic. Wednesday nights Captains meeting was incredible great buffet, great band and a giant silent auction. Im fishing with Brett, Matt and Corbin Alshire we met up early for the 38-mile run we had. Once we got there the bite was on. Snook, Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish got us started until the tide started moving in. The tide was getting higher and the Tarpon started rolling but only slapped at our lures.

Once the tide got up there were Taron everywhere in a big Mullet mud. We casted at rolling Tarpon only to catch Redfish. We had them 2 and 3 at a time. The Tarpon kept rolling Matt and Corbin both hooked up at the same time, while Brett had a Redfish. This was crazy 5 minutes. Matt landed his Tarpon and we Broke Corbin s off while being chase by a Shark. (Video Above)

We did this for a couple hours and were exhausted from catching fish in 95 degree temperature. We wanted to get the most species trophy, so we went looking for a mangrove Snapper. Dont you know

we found the mother lode of snappers. Cornbin caught a 13-inch Snapper which won big Snapper along with most Species. Great day they caught 2 Tarpon allot of Snook and Redfish to 26 inches and a bunch of Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish. What a great day we walked away we 3 awards for Snapper, Species and Big Redfish not to mention 2 Grands Slams. All of this and then a killer lunch at the awards. This is a tough job some days!

Still Slammin every trip!

The species are here in good numbers, when that happens, we try to catch all of them. The backcountry fish that make up the Slam are 3 of the 4, Tarpon, Snook, Redfish and Trout. If you are lucky enough to catch all 4 it is a Grand Slam. In the last couple months, we have slammed on almost every trip.

The fishing is so good I hate to miss a day but it’s a very hot summer, I know a lot of guys that just won’t do it.

The Tarpon are thick and hitting assorted lures, I use the Berkley Swimming Mullet and a weedless Fluke. There are plenty of good lures, but floating grass has been a problem so no

The bite might not have been the best today for us, but we made several memories that will last a lifetime. Tania and I pray all who made it out over the weekend had blessed and safe trips. May those heading out this week have tight lines and good times.
