Advancements In Dentistry That Did Not Exist 20 Years Ago INVISIBLE BRACES – Takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created especially for each person. The aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that are worn over teeth. They can be removed for easier teeth brushing and flossing.

A thin piece of porcelain or composite is used to re-create the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. Independent & Trusted Investment Advice

Mary Rourke

The bewitching hour is fast approaching, are you ready? If you have decided to spend the 31st of October in the presence of some of the scariest creatures on earth, you will want to prepare. Throwing a Halloween party can be scary in itself. Planning ahead is the only way to avoid the horrors of the party that flopped. Decorations can make or break your ghastly get together. Rather than throw up some ghosts and goblins, pick a theme. It doesn’t have to be a scary party there are many other ways to make the perfect Halloween gathering. If you do prefer the darkness of the occasion, rather than bring back the dead why not investigate the death? Create a murder mystery party complete with a crime scene. Ask guests to dress up according to a certain time period, like the roaring 20s or the Wild West. If you are not a storyteller, there are murder mystery party ideas online that can help you build the perfect crime. Set aside one room of the house that can be turned into the crime scene. Move furniture and create a scene of chaos complete with a trail of clues for your guests to follow. Make sure your food follows suit. Stick with your theme and offer guests food selections from the time period you have chosen.

Hollywood theme parties can give your guests the freedom to dress as any Hollywood characters they want. For those that want to stick with the more macabre, there are plenty of horror movie characters that would be easy to create. There are always those guests that prefer to re-create the lighter side of Halloween celebrations. Decorating for a Hollywood style party can mean a red carpet to the front door as well as glitzy lights and streamers both inside and outside. Balloons are another way to add to the atmosphere. Cut out gold stars to place on the red carpet. Add the names of your guests for a little fun. It will be an amusing welcome to the evening.

If your party plans include younger trick-or-treaters, there are many themes that kids will enjoy. Why not let them help with the decorating? Throw a Jack-o-lantern decorating party. Kids of all ages love to decorate pumpkins. For the younger guests, supply washable paint, stickers, jewels, ribbons and even glitter for them to use to decorate their gourds. Older guests may prefer to cut out a face or design on their pumpkins. Have a few designs available to help those that might not be able to choose what they would like on their jack-o-lanterns. After all of the pumpkins have been carved or decorated, give out prizes for the scariest, craziest and even funniest designs. Kids will have a great time carving their creatures and will be excited to take them home.

This Month IN HISTORY FAMOUS OCTOBER EVENTS There is no topic in history that is more popular than the weather. Canada is home to many different types of weather systems and some can be quite extreme. As the joke goes, you can start the day off in a parka and end it in a swimsuit. October is one month of the year that can see extremes. There have been few storms striking Ontario that have been as strong as Hurricane Hazel. The Hurricane was one of the deadliest storms of 1954. It left a trail of destruction across the Atlantic coast killing several hundred in its path. On October 15, 1954 the storm reached Southern Ontario. It was supposed to dissipate, but instead intensified rapidly. Toronto was pounded with winds that reached 110 km an hour. About 285 millimeters of rain fell in 48 hours across the region. Thousands were left homeless and 81 people were killed. The cost of the storm reached an estimated $100 million at the time. Hurricane Hazel left her mark changing the Toronto landscape forever. More than 50 years later, Ontario felt the power of a colder wind. It was no joke when between 30 and 50 cm of wet snow fell in the Niagara Peninsula on Friday, October 13, 2006. The surprise storm closed the Peace Bridge and forced two towns in the area to

declare states of emergency. In addition to the heavy snow, winds reached up to 90 km/h wreaking havoc on trees and power lines. More than 155,000 customers were left without electricity, some had no power for up to five days. It was a first for several areas. No snow had ever fallen as early as October 13 before. In Welland, the earliest snowfall had been recorded as October 11, 1906 when 10.4 cm fell. Insult was added to injury the day after the October 13 snowfall when temperatures rose to 8 degrees causing the mounds of snow to melt. There was localized flooding. In 2008, winter played a trick and there was no treat. A couple of days before October 31, Old Man Winter made a surprise appearance. Some residents of Ontario and Quebec saw between 10 and 20 centimetres accumulate as a fierce nor’easter spread across the east coast of the United States. The heavy snowfall was accompanied by high winds that caused reduced visibility for drivers. Because many of the trees still had leaves, the weight of the snow caused many trees to fall and branches to break. There were also widespread power outages. October of 2017 saw a completely different type of weather system. September and October temperatures averaged a record-breaking 16.7 degrees Celsius. Typically the average temperature for both September and October reaches just about 13 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recorded for October 2017 was 27.5 degrees Celsius. The fall warmth helped make up for a cooler summer. Ready to Vote? Election signs have been strategically placed on neighbourhood front lawns and pasted outside of office windows. Some may catch your eye, while others blend into a sea of signs scattered on a nearby busy roadway. They are all vying for your attention, but do you know much about the people running for municipal council and school board elections on October 22nd? Here are some tips to help you decide who gets your vote. Make a list. What’s important for you in this coming election? What has made an impact on you or your family with regards to safety in the community, recreational facilities, public health, education programs or waste management? Did a recent crisis bring something to light or did you notice a lack of health inspections in some neighbourhood restaurants that concerned you? The people you elect will have a hand in dealing with or solving these issues. Start early and research. A simple search on the Internet will give you an idea of how much exposure your potential candidate has online. Do they have their own website? Are they active on all or some of the popular social media sites? What is it that they are saying? How frequently are they posting online? From here, you can get a glimpse of what they stand for and what they are against. You will also see how controversial they might be or how they deal with public discussions. As well, you’ll find out which candidate has been proactive in addressing concerns, which are the most popular with the most followers and which ones are not.

Campaign promises. Look back to see what the candidate has done for the community in the past and don’t just rely on what is being promised. Has the candidate been involved in projects that made positive impacts? Did they have difficulty getting anything accomplished? These are good indicators of how they will perform if elected. Pick up the phone. These candidates are running on your behalf. Call them to let them know your concerns and to find out what they will do about them. Not only will you get a sense of how focused they are on your topics, but you might also be bringing a new concern to the table that they can address. Get out and vote. Municipal elections generally do not bring out the most voters, but it’s very important to have as many votes as possible in order to have the most fair election outcome. In order to vote, you must be a Canadian citizen who is eligible to vote. Check to ensure you are on the current voter’s list. There is an online service that allows voters to confirm and update their electoral information. You can visit the site at www.voterlookup.ca. Remember to bring identification. Hiking in Ontario There is nothing more beautiful than a sunny fall day. The air is cool and the leaves on the trees are putting on a spectacularly colourful show. Rather than admire the beauty from a window, consider going for a hike. Ontario is full of wonderful trails that lead right through the middle of the fall colours. You don’t have to head very far from home to enjoy the Greenbelt area of the province. It is two million acres of protected forests, rivers, wetlands and watersheds. The Greenbelt runs from the Niagara River to the Oak Ridges Moraine. There are 10,000 kilometres of trails and roads on the route. If you are looking for a quiet walk or a long hike, the Bruce Trail, Oak Ridges Moraine Trail and Ganaraska Trail are worth the trek. They are a great way to spend a couple of hours or an entire day. For those wishing to go for a stroll for an hour close to home then the Orchard Trail in Toronto’s Rouge Park is just the spot. It is an easy 2-kilometre walk that is accessible by transit. It is that short country getaway in the city. Mizzy Lake trail in Algonquin Park is five to eight hours well spent. The 11km long trail winds past nine small lakes and ponds. There is plenty of wildlife to see along this sensitive wetland route so it is best not to bring along the family dog. If you are in Eastern Ontario and are hoping to spend a day hiking through a beautiful area then make sure to visit the Rideau Trail. The route actually runs 387 km from Kingston to Ottawa, but don’t let that frighten you. There are many shorter routes along the trail that are ideal for those wishing to spend a few hours hiking.

SAVE UP TO

$500

For moderate to advanced hikers, there are trails that are further north that are great options. The Coastal Trail at Lake Superior Provincial Park follows the Lake Superior coastline and runs from Agawa Bay to Chalfant Cove. It is a 65 km trail that can take about 5 to 7 days to complete. The trail features breathtaking cliffs, cobblestone beaches and kilometres of forests. There are several access points along the way to jump on or off the trail.

La Cloche Silhouette Trail in Killarney Provincial Park is not for the faint of heart. The trail is considered difficult and extends 100 km. It is known as one of the most rugged trails in Ontario with its rolling hills, lakes and streams. Those wishing to hike the distance should expect to spend about 7 to 10 days on the trial. There are campsites along the way for overnight stays. Like any other campsite in Ontario, remember to book your spot before heading out on the trail.

Tasty Turkey Thanksgiving is one of the most traditional holidays on the calendar. It combines a mixture of family, friends, fun, and of course, fowl. Most Thanksgiving feasts involve a plump, juicy turkey with all of the trimmings. Year after year, families put together a feast based on traditional recipes. It has been the same for decades. Are you bored of the same old turkey dinner? Why not switch it up this year and try something new? It could be the perfect recipe for future Thanksgivings. There is no rule that says your Thanksgiving feast has to involve a whole, roasted turkey. In fact, you may find it challenging to fit the big bird into your oven. There are no bones about it; you need a new plan. Visit a local butcher shop and ask if they offer boneless turkey breasts. Not only will this form of fowl cut down on clean up time, it will also shorten the length of time it takes to cook your feast. Check out various recipes for rubs that will help create a lovely seasoned seasonal dish. Try splitting the breast and adding stuffing. There are many kinds of stuffings that will enhance the already tasty bird. Dark meat lovers may be disappointed with a Turkey breast meal. The breasts consist of white meat only. For those on your guest list that would rather enjoy a darker meal, add a dish of turkey drumsticks. There are many kinds

Deep-frying is not for everyone. For those feeding family and friends that prefer the traditionally prepared bird, there are options for making old new again. Raise a glass to the traditionally roasted turkey and spill a few drops on the dish while you are at it. A beer brine may be just what you need to give a different taste to your fowl dish. Try brining the bird in a dark beer. The turkey will absorb extra moisture that helps it stay juicy. It also absorbs the flavours from the brine that ensures the bird is seasoned inside and out. Using darker beers to brine the bird will help create a darker skin while giving the meat a toasty flavour. There are several recipes for beer mixed with seasonings, brown sugar and even bacon that will enhance the flavour.

If half a bird is not what you had hoped for, why not put a twist on the traditional whole turkey dinner. Deep-frying a full turkey is not new, but there are still many cooks that haven’t tried the hot oil bird bath. The benefits of deep-frying include a moist bird in a shorter amount of cooking time. If you dare to do something different and need to invest in a deep fryer, be sure to choose one that has a built in rotisserie.

Shades of Paint There is nothing duller in a home than a room that has lost its luster. You know ‘that’ room, the one that was once the room that you loved the most because of its colour. Now, it has gone from brilliant to boring and it is crying out for a makeover. The easiest way to take your room from ‘not’ to ‘hot’ is to change the wall colour. There are several ‘hot’ paint colours on the market that can add some pizzazz to your home. Blues with a twist are a great way to lighten up a room while adding a dash of colour. Muted blue-greens can create a space that is soothing and relaxing. There is just enough colour to add a sophisticated flare to a bedroom or to a bathroom. The colour creates a great backdrop for furniture in the taupe scheme. Sticking with the greens, sea foam is making a splash in homes this year. The green is brighter than the muted blue-greens and makes a statement in any room without being too bold. The colour can lighten up any space making it feel refreshing and airy. Greys seem to never go out of style. The barely-there colours are just enough to brighten up a room. They work well with a variety of accent colours to create a welcoming area in the home. The neutral tones are great for bedrooms and bathrooms. They can transform a room into the perfect spot for a moment of relaxation.

Just like grey, beige is not forgotten. There are more contemporary versions of the understated colour on the market that add a sense of warmth. If you are into something bolder, there is nothing hotter than red. Whether you choose to paint an entire room a deep red, or just one wall, the colour is sure to make a statement. The rich, dark colour is a great addition to dining rooms and kitchens. Fire engine red may not be your thing, but the red tones are what you are looking for. A berry colour is a great way to add a dark reddish tone to any room. The purplered appearance is dark and warm and not as shocking as its brighter red cousin. The deeper shade of red adds a touch of richness to any room but looks especially attractive in the dining room area. Homeowners are not shying away from dark colours when giving their houses a facelift. Black is back and holding strong in more formal rooms. There are various tones of blacks, but all add a certain sophisticated darkness to many living rooms and more formal spaces in the home. Contrasting white baseboards or wainscoting with the deep, black walls makes a room more refined. For those wanting a twist on the dark paint, there are other tones available. Purple-blacks are softer but still create a dark, sophisticated space.

Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do You Suffer From?

If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms – Numbness, Tingling, Or Sharp Nerve Pain – THEN THE FACTS BELOW MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE! Neuropathy affects every part of your life -- walking, sitting, and even sleeping. Maybe you’ve had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have. Maybe you’ve even been put on a drug with heavy side effects.

Do you have any of the following symptoms... • Pins and needles feeling • Numbness in the hands or feet • Tingling or burning sensations • Weakness in the arms or legs • Sharp shooting or burning pains If so you may have a condition called peripheral neuropathy.

My name is Dr. Joshua Nikkanen, clinic director at Crossroads Chiropractic. I’ve been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for more than 15 years. More than five million Canadians suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy By using gentle techniques, I’m able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. Numerous studies have proven chiropractic’s effectiveness in

helping nerve conditions... “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. - Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” – JMPT 1998 “Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative. Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994 What these studies mean is that with chiropractic care, you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems. How To Find Out If This Will Work For You It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution. For 14 days only, $35 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $220 for! What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive:

• • •

• •

An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. A complete neuromuscular examination. A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain-free. You’ll get to see everything firsthand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients.

Don’t let neuropathy hold you back from enjoying life.

The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. Here’s What To Do Now The offer is only good until October 18. Call today 905-830-1146 and we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located just east of Yonge St., on Eagle St., just a few minutes from you. Senior BEAT WRINKLE CARE There is no real way to avoid wrinkles as we age, but there are ways to help your skin look healthier. If you can’t beat ‘em, treat ‘em! It is no secret that the sun’s hot rays are bad for the skin. In fact the sun can be blamed for aging the skin by causing lines and uneven pigmentation. While wrinkles will happen, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays will cut down on how quickly you age. Use sunscreen all year round and wear protective clothing and a hat. Choose a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Dry skin can enhance the look of wrinkles. Start your day with a regiment of skin care that includes moisturizing. There are many moisturizers on the market that will not erase the wrinkles, but they can reduce the look of fine lines and creases. Don’t forget to choose creams that include a broad spectrum sunscreen and have an SPF of at least 15. You may be overwhelmed at all of the choices on the shelves. There are several ingredients that promise to reduce the look of wrinkles. Retinol is widely used in many wrinkle creams. Retinoids work by increasing the production of collagen and stimulating new blood vessels in the skin. Vitamin A is another antioxidant compound that helps create collagen. In addition, it is an effective treatment against

acne, for those that are plagued by breakouts. Vitamin E helps protect the skin against sun damage. For those with dry skin, Vitamin E is a welcome addition to any cream. It helps moisturize the skin while assisting in the treatment of any skin inflammation. Are You... Dreaming Of Learning How To Play A Musical Instrument?

In sticking with the vitamin family, Vitamin C is commonly used in facial creams as a skin brightener. The compound is much like Vitamin A and Retinol as it helps stimulate the production of collagen. Vitamin C also helps protect the skin from free radicals.

Wanting To Dust Off Your Old Musical Instrument?

Another popular ingredient in anti-aging creams is Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). CoQ10 is actually a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body. It is also in some foods and acts as an antioxidant that protects cells from damage. In cream form, CoQ10 helps reduce the look of aging by creating collagen and elastin. It can help reduce the look of fine lines around the eyes while it is protecting the skin from sun damage. If you are looking for a more natural way to treat your skin, there are some food extracts that can be beneficial. Green, black and oolong teas contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. All three kinds of tea extracts have been used in various anti-aging creams, but Green tea extract is the most common ingredient. Green tea extracts contain polyphenols that are effective in protecting the skin from free radicals. Studies have shown that Green Tea can also increase the skin’s moisture for a prolonged period of time.

Youth BEAT CARING FOR YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD By Samantha Forani, Graduate of McMaster University Everyone leads a busy life, and sometimes it is hard to remember to take time to care for everything around you, and that includes your neighbourhood. Your neighbourhood offers you so many things, like friends, parks, and space for activity. While it may seem like there is nothing you need to do, it is important to remember that you always have something to contribute. By doing so, you are helping maintain it or even doing things to improve it. The very first thing that everyone can contribute is their time. Start by checking your town newsletter as there are always community events going on that ask for help. Whether they are charity events to raise money for maintenance and upkeep of the community, garbage clean ups, or planting projects, these events are always looking for more volunteers. Your volunteering time does not have to be for a one day event either. Lots of towns have committees for planning, or simply providing time to necessary things each week, so if you have an hour to give to your community each week, do it! It can also be great to suggest ideas and help plan your own event that can give back to your town. It can be the simplest thing like a community picnic for people to get to know each other better, or encourage people to get outside after a long winter. Or perhaps there is an important project that the community does not have the funds for. Help organize a charity that could raise that money. And of course, if you have the means, donations are never a bad idea.

Registration now open for weekend Teen and Adult classes in November and December. CHECK OUR WEBSITE FOR FALL AND WINTER CLASSES.

Everyone wants a safe, clean, and stable community for themselves and their families. But it takes effort to keep those communities up to standards. Many do not realise the work and commitment that things like parks, community centers, local trails, and more, take to keep up and running. While it may seem like you are already giving back by cutting your lawn and keeping your property nice, it unfortunately is not always enough. But the smallest bit of effort can make a difference, even if it is maybe cutting your elderly neighbour’s lawn when you are finished with your own. It is a great feeling when you know you are giving back to the community you live in. It can be something as little as volunteering an hour a week, or for a few small events a year. But the best part is getting to know your community as well. From meeting new people, to learning things you did not even know about the area you live in, there are so many benefits to giving back to your community. So get out there, plant a tree, pick up some garbage, or whatever you want to do. You will not regret it!
