Screen and Kyocera develop Truepress JET S320 prototype

Truepress JET S320.

By Colleen Bate

Screen Graphic Solutions and Kyocera Document Solutions have partnered to develop Truepress JET S320, an A3 sheet-fed digital inkjet printer prototype. The Truepress JET S320 prototype made its debut at the Printing United Expo 2023 in Atlanta USA in October. According to both companies, in recent years, especially in the commercial printing and publishing markets, businesses have shifted toward digital printing technology. This change is driven by a broader societal shift toward companies that leverage digital data. In contrast to the traditional production of broadcast-style advertisements and prediction-based mass production, there

is now a demand for data-driven targeting and personalised advertising materials. This shift has resulted in a move toward production that involves printing only the necessary quantity at the required time, often with targeted messaging. Screen GA has provided a line of highspeed, continuous-feed inkjet digital presses, the Truepress JET 520 series, in response to these needs. These have been widely embraced for various printing applications such as transactions, direct mail, catalogues, brochures, publications and more. Now a global leader in this market, Screen GA has been commercialising an A3 sheet-fed inkjet digital printing machine by

leveraging the technical expertise in A3 production printers held by Kyocera Document Solutions along with Screen GA’s Truepress ink SC/SC+ technology for ink compatibility with standard coated papers. This proprietary ink prints on commercially available coated papers without the requirement of coating or priming. With the introduction of this product, Screen GA is expanding various solutions, including the enhancement of workflow solutions integrated with its EQUIOS workflow system, hybrid printing in conjunction with CtP and offset printing, and increased productivity through the combined use of the Truepress JET 520 series.

Durst Group subsidiary PPD to relocate headquarters to Lienz By Colleen Bate

Durst Group subsidiary PrePress digital – Software Development (PPD), which has seen remarkable growth in recent years, has taken a significant step for its future development with plans to relocate. A leader in developing innovative solutions for the printing industry, PPD will relocate its headquarters to the centre of Lienz in the third quarter of 2024. headquarters to Lienz marks a significant milestone in its success story and underscores the Durst Group’s commitment to the future. The work on the Schlossberg Villas will be completed in the next twelve months. Durst Group CEO and co-owner Christoph Gamper emphasises the strategic importance of this decision. “The relocation of PPD to this new, modern environment is a logical step for our subsidiary to offer its services to third-party companies in the field of digital printing and production technologies. We are convinced that PPD will continue to grow

and expand in this environment,” he said. PPD CEO Hans Peter Schneeberger added: “The new location offers us the ideal size and position to be perceived as an extremely attractive employer in the region. Our employees will enjoy a pleasant working environment in open and well-lit spaces, which are excellently connected to public transportation. We will continue to follow our sustainable principles and generate a significant portion of our electricity needs through a photovoltaic system on the building’s roof, emphasising our commitment to eco-friendly solutions.”

installed in September at CMYKhub’s West Heidelberg premises by Currie Group engineers supported by Horizon technical specialists flown in from Japan. “The new Horizon CABS4000 will allow our resellers to support the growth of small brands and look after larger customers by offering print-ondemand efficiencies. While the sweet spot will probably be runs between 2 – 4,000 copies, we anticipate being able to handle much shorter and much longer run lengths. Basically, we’d consider doing a single book if we can do it profitably and keep the price reasonable for our resellers,” said CMYKhub CEO Dayne Nankervis, who experiences a sense of professional excitement at the Horizon CABS4000’s potential.

COMMENT ROWAN

Community engagement is integral for growth and goodwill Think Laterally’s Mick Rowan discusses the merits and advantages of community connections

BUILDING NETWORKS

In times of economic downturn or crisis, and I think we all know what that looks like, a loyal and supportive local customer base can be a lifeline for your business. Customers who feel a strong connection to your brand and its community involvement are more likely to stand by you when times get tough. This support can provide much-needed stability and resilience during challenging periods.

I

n an era where corporate social responsibility is increasingly under the spotlight, community involvement is not just a commendable endeavour; it’s a strategic move that can bring significant advantages to your business. In Australasia’s vibrant business landscape, engaging with your local community can be a game-changer, fostering goodwill, customer loyalty, and growth. Building a stellar reputation is a cornerstone of any successful business, and community involvement offers a direct path to this goal. When your company actively participates in local events, sponsors community activities, or supports charitable causes, you send a powerful message: you care about more than just profits. This genuine concern for the community can elevate your brand’s image and make it more appealing to customers and stakeholders.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Loyalty is the holy grail of customer relationships. When customers perceive your business as a caring member of their community, they’re more likely to return for repeat business. In Australasia’s competitive market, fostering customer loyalty can be a game-changer. Your clients will not only appreciate the quality of your services but also the fact that they are supporting a business that gives back to their local community. Word of mouth referrals are like gold in the business world. When community members experience the positive impact of your involvement, they become natural advocates for your business. They will share their favourable experiences with friends, family, and colleagues (and if you’re lucky on Google, too), effectively becoming your unofficial marketing team. Positive word of mouth referrals can significantly expand your reach and customer base.

CREATING CONNECTIONS

In a crowded marketplace, standing out is essential. Community involvement can be

When prospective clients see that you’re not just another company but a socially responsible one, they are more likely to choose your services over competitors who lack that community connection. Differentiation can lead to increased market share and revenue. Engaging with your local community can open doors to valuable relationships. Building connections with residents, other businesses, and local organisations can lead to collaborations and partnerships that benefit everyone involved. These relationships can be instrumental in driving growth and expanding your influence within your community. Participating in community events and gatherings provides an opportunity to gain insights into your target audience’s needs, preferences, and concerns. In the dynamic business landscape of Australasia, fostering a strong connection with your local community can set you apart, enhance your brand reputation, and create a loyal customer base. It’s a win-win scenario where your business thrives, and your community benefits from your support. So, as you look to the future, consider the resounding benefits of community involvement, and make it an integral part of your business strategy. In a world where quality and customer service reign supreme, being a company that cares about its community can be the key to enduring success in a competitive market. Currie Group hosts Open House at Sydney Demonstration Centre

urrie Group has hosted a series of open house events at its Sydney Demonstration Centre following its recent partnership with Canon Production Printing Australia. The Sign & Display… By Appointment series of open house events has provided existing and potential buyers with the opportunity to view the Currie Group’s latest expanded range of large-format equipment and also book one-on-one sessions and demonstrations. According to Currie Group business development manager – sign & display, Ashley Playford-Browne, the Sydney Demonstration Centre located at Macquarie Park features an HP Indigo,

an EFI Pro 30h hybrid printer as well as the latest Canon Colorado M-series printer. “It is about inviting the Sydney market to come and experience the technology and play around with it to see if these products represent the most appropriate fit for their needs and their business,” PlayfordBrowne told ProPrint. “This is an exciting time for Currie Group in the Sydney market. We have had a dozen demonstrations already in the last week and we have another full week of demos planned as well. We plan to continue to do this for the coming weeks and months ahead. “It has been interesting to see that we have had a mixture of both existing

customers – leveraging off the base of Indigo users – but also several new customers to Currie Group looking to branch out into different printing market categories. “Printers are definitely looking to diversify as well as graphics businesses that are installers or exhibition specialists are also looking to bring the technology in house. As a result a lot more diversification is happening up and down the value chain to reduce turnaround times and reduce errors to assist with supply chain delivery.” If you missed your opportunity to book an appointment, contact the team at Currie Group.

Currie Group confirms first Colorado M-series sale

urrie Group has confirmed the sale of the first Colorado machine following the partnership with Canon Production Printing Australia. The sale to Melbourne-based Fleetmark was confirmed at the recent event in Sydney hosted at the Currie Group Demonstration Centre. “Fleetmark has purchased the first Canon Colorado M5W under the Currie Group banner to complement their truck curtain business in Melbourne where they also use two EFI machines – so this brings everything under one roof in terms of service and support,” said Currie Group

Tango Visuals secures first Arizona sale for Currie Group

urrie Group has confirmed the first Arizona sale to Melbournebased signage and POS company – Tango Visuals. According to Currie Group business unit manager, sign & display, Paul Whitehead, the deal emphasises the importance of the partnership with Canon Production Printing Australia. This is the first Arizona for Currie Group, and shows in a short period of time both in the relationship with Canon Production Printing Australia and the standing that Currie Group have in the industry. “To get an Arizona sale is a very strategic achievement for us as well as collaborating with the right customer to move forward is very important and we appreciate the trust that Tango Visuals has put into Currie Group. “It is good to work with a very professional outfit that know what they are doing, and it also goes hand in hand with what we do

business unit manager for sign & display, Paul Whitehead. “Fleetmark have been traditionally in vehicle graphics and known for their truck curtains and truck graphics. We have done a lot of work with Fleetmark previously with their existing EFI portfolio. They have seen how Currie Group works from a service and support perspective and they have traditionally worked with other technologies in the 64-inch space. “To complement that type of work and the increased workload, they have seen the Colorado technology and fell in love with it. “The great thing about the Colorado is its versatility. Many printers have traditionally used eco solvent and latex technologies in the past and they either hit a productivity ceiling or have multiple footprints. “The UVgel does a couple of things – not only from a versatility and a productivity standpoint but it overcomes the challenges printers face with traditional technologies in the sense that colour

In terms of the values of the organisations – Currie Group, Tango Visuals and Canon Production Printing – we all hold customer satisfaction very high – so it is a perfect outcome for all three businesses. Tango Visuals is a 10-year old printing operation based at Croydon in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, started by twin brothers Andy and David Tierney. David Tierney told ProPrint his projectbased company undertakes a lot of print and install business nationally including interior fit-out and event activations as well as fabricated lettering, soft-signage, external signage and illumination. “We have a good list of clients, including partnerships with the AFL and TAB that are mainly Melbourne-based as well as some national work. “We are that start-up company that always thought that roll-to-roll was the way to go and now we have ventured into the flatbed space. of printing roll-to-roll Opti-Clear and then laminating on to acrylic – a little bit clunky. “We have known Paul for a long time and started looking at the Canon range. We looked at some other suppliers and the Arizona 135 as an entry level product ticked all of the boxes and we got it signed off by the client and it was all systems go very quickly. In the end it was a bit of a no-brainer. “In a previous business, we had one of the first iterations of the Arizona back in 2010, so I knew the quality, the reliability and the reputation with Canon and the Arizona in particular.” Tango Visuals has confirmed that the delivery of the Arizona 135 UV flatbed will be finalised prior to Christmas.

PROFILE KOJI MIYAO

Ricoh Graphic Communications President Visits Australia ProPrint recently sat down with Ricoh Graphic Communications President, Koji Miyao, during his recent visit to Australia.

Ricoh Graphic Communications President, Koji Miyao

M

iyao was appointed as President at the beginning of 2023, after 22 years with Ricoh – most recent as General Manager, Business Management Division. During the interview, Miyao shared his thoughts on the local market as well as the global trends facing the production printing sector in the year ahead.

SHIFT FROM OFFSET TO DIGITAL

Miyao has reinforced the global trend of growing digital printing sales as companies look to diversify from traditional offset printing methods. “Offset to digital is definitely happening right now and we have strong expectations that this will be accelerating in the next two to three years because not only Ricoh – but other vendors – are developing and introducing new technology that is providing more productivity and more cost advantages. “Many customers are currently looking to transform themselves and their digital printing capabilities. At the same time, from the customer’s perspective, print jobs and run lengths are getting smaller and smaller as trends such as print on demand and more personalisation increase, which is also providing digital printing with several advantages over offset printing.”

RICOH PRO Z75 B2 SHEETFED PRESS

The new Ricoh Pro Z75 B2 sheetfed aqueosbased inkjet machine has been launched and the first installations have commenced in Europe and North America. The Pro Z75 is expected to be available for sale in mid-2024 in Australia and New Zealand.

16 ProPrint December 2023

“The primary target for the Pro Z75 is commercial printers – for high quality printing such as brochures. For example if an offset printer is asked to print 10,000 copies on a B2-sized press, and then one month later the client requests another 500 copies – it is a time consuming and expensive process for them to create plates and set-up. This type of scenario would be a perfect digital solution for the Pro Z75 as it is much easier to complete this type of extra run on a digital press and we can also print on demand.”

THE AUSTRALIAN MARKET

Based on his observations, Miyao believes the Australian market features behavioural elements from both the European and American markets. “My instinct tells me that the Australian market is more aligned to the European market. In America more machines are sold to in-house printing operations, and in Europe and Australia more production printers are sold into commercial printers. Australia from a commercial printing perspective is an advanced country and we are very happy that the world first customer for our latest Pro C9500 is located in Melbourne.”

SUSTAINABILITY

Miyao confirmed that sustainability represents a key area of development to meet the needs of printers and the demands of their customers. “From our perspective at Ricoh Graphic Communications, we can reduce waste of paper and other printer materials as we are able to print on demand with digital printing. We are also working hard to reduce CO2 consumption in printing as well as energy consumption and this is our vision for the future. We are helping our customers to understand how much CO2 they have consumed, as this is now a common request for commercial printing customers. This is a key trend that I have observed in the European market in particular as this has been driven by the EU government.”

GLOBAL TRENDS

Following his interactions with printers all over the world, Miyao has observed a number of key trends.

“Printers globally are looking to transform themselves to capture new demand and new markets as it is difficult to grow organically. Other printers are adapting to an on-demand requirement, such as annual books or photobooks and they are also including service and delivery so they are capturing the total workflow to the customer. “I have one customer where commercial printing was previously representing almost 100 per cent of their business. They have transformed their business so that printing is now 10 per cent of their business by transforming into a company that can supply turnkey graphics solutions for retailers when they open a new store – such a 7-Eleven Convenience store. The starting point for this evolution of this business was printed materials and they have transformed themselves to create a completely new business operation.”

DRUPA

“We are still in the planning stage for drupa, but we will be displaying the Pro Z75 B2 cutsheet inkjet press as well as the recently announced Pro VC80000 continuous feed high-speed inkjet press. We are going to be showcasing our software and workflow automation solutions as well for our customers. We will also be working with important third-party partners to help show how we can fit our solutions within a customer’s entire workflow. “We look forward to seeing our customers in Australia and New Zealand at our booth at drupa. Ricoh’s DNA is to work with the customer delivering key innovation. We say our culture is customer first and we always listen to the customer and their pain points to develop a relationship as a trusted business partner.”

The new Ricoh Pro Z75 B2 sheetfed aqueos-based inkjet machine has been launched and is expected to be available for sale locally in mid-2024.

HEAT TRANSFER PRODUCTION

Mimaki DTF printers revolutionise heat transfer production in Velflex’s diverse product line Mimaki Australia has unveiled a ground-breaking addition to the world of heat transfer production with the installation of its innovative TxF150-75 direct to film printer at partner Velflex. The results surpassed expectations, showcasing the TxF150-75’s ability to deliver exceptional quality and vibrant prints consistently. The Mimaki TxF150-75 brings a new level of efficiency to heat transfer production by enabling the printing of small transfer quantities, allowing businesses to say ‘yes’ to more jobs. Moreover, the printer can handle all DTFrated films, including specialty finishes such as metallic, providing unmatched versatility for various applications within the heat transfer industry.

Velflex owner and GM Ben Carroll and Mimaki Australia marketing specialist Chris Dutkowski

T

he collaboration between Mimaki and Velflex, industry leaders in wide-format printing and heat transfer innovation respectively, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of printing technology.

Mimaki’s unique ink circulation system, making it the ideal printer not only for large-scale production facilities but also for small operators seeking efficiency in handling small print runs with substantial breaks between jobs.

“We are thrilled to embark on this collaboration with Mimaki,” Velflex owner and general manager Ben Carroll said.

This versatility ensures that businesses of all sizes can benefit from the cuttingedge capabilities of the TxF150-75, opening up new possibilities for heat transfer applications.

“Admittedly we have been a little slow to join the DTF boom – but it has been intentional. We have been biding our time, awaiting the development of a DTF printer that aligns seamlessly with our unwavering commitment to quality. The TxF150-75 from Mimaki has produced the best quality DTF prints we have seen hands down – the vibrancy and colours are second to none.” The TxF150-75 stands out with its degassed aluminium ink packs and

18 ProPrint December 2023

Velflex, with its 18 years of heat transfer expertise, undertook rigorous testing of the TxF150-75 by running various DTF film types from different suppliers through the printer. The testing process included printing jobs from Velflex’s UltraColour transfer product range, providing a comprehensive assessment of the printer’s performance and compatibility and how it compares to other transfer products on the market.

The introduction of the TxF150-75 has revolutionised Velflex’s product line, enabling it to offer single quantity transfer orders up to gang sheets by the metre. Previously constrained by a minimum order quantity of 10 transfers, Velflex can now cater to a broader range of customer needs. The TxF150-75 has also significantly accelerated the production of transfers, allowing Velflex to meet demands more efficiently. The TxF150-75’s ink rotation system reduces ink wastage, contributing to costefficiency in heat transfer production. Mimaki’s commitment to environmental responsibility is evident through the EOKO TEX ECO PASSPORT certification for all TxF150-75 inks, attesting to the world’s highest level of safety certified by a third-party organisation. This aligns with the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly printing practices. As Mimaki and Velflex continue to redefine the possibilities in the heat transfer industry, the TxF150-75 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and technological advancement, offering businesses a pathway to enhanced efficiency, versatility, and quality in their heat transfer production processes. VISUAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION

VMA Annual Industry Metrics Survey roadshow kicks off in Sydney The Visual Media Association (VMA) 2023 Annual Industry Metrics Survey event, launched in Sydney on 14 November and hosted by partner sponsor Ricoh Australia, was well attended.

T

he newly-formed Visual Media Association has released surprise findings from its 2023 Annual Industry Metrics Survey. The first event to release the report was hosted by partner sponsor Ricoh Australia and held at the company’s Macquarie Park offices in Sydney on Tuesday 14 November, before a roadshow of events across Australia. According to VMA CEO Kellie Northwood, the first survey of its kind in 10 years completed by 160 of the top printing businesses in the country representing approximately 75 per cent of the personnel employed in the category has identified key trends and forecasts for the print and visual media industry. “As we merged the Real Media Collective and PVCA over the past 12 months, one of the really important things was to look at all of the wonderful programs that both associations have done historically. “And one of them is an industry should know who it is, what it is, and how it is to allow our businesses to be more successful as well as your planning, forecasting your CapEx investments. “We are hearing a lot of things about skilled labour shortages and what the government wants us to be doing environmentally and when it comes to carbon. We need to understand as an industry, what are we actually doing? Where are we at and understand whether we are we prepared, and also, what the association needs to also be investing in for you, so that we can address some of your concerns. “I was thrilled with the high level of respondents to the survey, we exceeded our respondent target by 42% which has ensured the data we have collected is compelling and a strong illustration of our industry. I do thank each and every respondent for their time and contribution to the survey. The data too has some surprises – staff ratios sales v operational reflects a changing landscape to manufacturing, commercial to digital equipment percentages similarly so. The

shift in skilled labour innovations, as well as working flexibility trends entering our industry are interesting and I look forward to sharing these with the industry over the next few weeks,” Northwood said.

STAR BUSINESS

Omnigraphics and MMT Print set for success with new FUJIFILM Acuity R2 In September 2022, David Walton bought out Omnigraphics and MMT Print from outdoor giant QMS Media and took on the role of CEO of both companies. In this Q&A with Colleen Bate he discusses his latest acquisition – a brand new Fujifilm Acuity Ultra R2, and shares the companies′ history, evolution, and standout projects, as well as his vision for the future.

Q.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURCHASE THE FUJIFILM ACUITY ULTRA R2?

The decision to purchase the Acuity Ultra R2 was an easy one, we needed burst capacity to help with our roll-to-roll banner and billboard printing. The Ultra R2 ticked all the boxes, high-speed printing quality and has a robust chassis which we can put through its paces. The team at FUJIFILM Australia have been accommodating with all our requests and have been flexible, understanding the position our businesses are in due to the recent change of ownership. The installation has run smoothly, given the machine is the first in the world to be installed in the dual CMYK format with the low energy LED it did require some special assistance from the

26 ProPrint December 2023

technical team in the UK. FUJIFILM Australia managed these seamlessly and the communication was fantastic. The machine allows us to print high quality banners and billboards at speeds we haven’t seen before at Omnigraphics, currently boasting a headline speed of up to 402 sqm per hour. It more than doubles our capacity and allows us to have redundancy, improve our speed to market and ensure quality results for our customers. The Acuity Ultra R2 sits well in our fleet of printers, complementing the Inca X3HS with its quality and speed and allowing us to free up our VuTek 5R+ for some of the more complex lower speed printing requirements. I’m sure our customers will be pleased with the quality reproductions we can produce off this piece of equipment. The next step will be

looking to duplicate this technology at MMT Print in 2024.

Q. HOW HAS OMNIGRAPHICS EVOLVED OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS, AND MORE RECENTLY SINCE YOU TOOK OVER THE REINS?

Omnigraphics and MMT Print have both evolved over the past 20 years. Gone are the days of premium pricing on billboards and it’s become crucial to gain volume and operate efficiently to be competitive in an ever-tightening market. Out of home printing used to make up 90 per cent of our business, in more recent years this only makes up about 50 per cent of our business. Other segments we have grown into include event signage, sports signage, retail markets and longterm signage.

STAR BUSINESS reflection on our team and the collaboration efforts from all parties involved. For over five years we have also produced the Arts Trams for Yarra Trams – each year they showcase local artists’ works in the form of full tram wraps. We have the pleasure of printing these beautiful pieces each year and admiring them as they travel around the Melbourne tram network over the following 12 months.

Q. WHAT ARE YOUR VISIONS AND PRIORITIES FOR OMNIGRAPHICS AND MMT PRINT INTO THE FUTURE?

The Omnigraphics team

Omnigraphics and MMT Print will concentrate heavily on sustainable printing solutions in the coming years. We want to be able to offer printing that doesn’t affect our planet through landfill avoidance, recycling and repurposing as much of our printed products as we can. Developing new technologies and partnerships to work towards this goal is at the forefront of our business plan. We aim to expand further in retail markets and ensure we can take our businesses to the next level with the right investment in equipment and investing in people with the right skill sets to get us there.

We have over 70 staff nationally with around 35 at each location. Staffing numbers have remained stable in the past five to 10 years, however we have plans to grow our teams at both sites over the next 12 to 18 months as we hit our strides in some new market segments. We continue to be a destination employer for the hearing-impaired community in Melbourne currently boasting nine incredible dedicated and skilled hearingimpaired staff at Omnigraphics. Both factories operate both roll-to-roll and flatbed. Equipment housed at the Omnigraphics facility includes the Fuji Acuity Ultra 2 HS, Fuji Inca Onset X3 HS, EFI VuTek 5R+, Epson Surecolour 80600 (x2), HP Latex 800, Oki Seiko M64s Colour painter (x3), and a Kongsberg C64 Cutting table. Q. CAN YOU PROVIDE SAMPLES OF SOME STANDOUT PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE WORKED ON?

We work regularly on many exciting projects. This year the highlight would have to be the Diablo IV billboard we produced for Activision in conjunction with Avenue C, QMS and Southern USI. The project included hand painting specialty paints to create a UV Blacklight effect which created a unique day/ night effect. The production won the OMA’s 2nd Quarter Grand Prix Award and the Innovation in Out of Home Award. The 40 x 10 billboard was a mammoth challenge to bring together, logistically managing the size while needing to be fine and accurate with our hand painting. The outcome was fantastic, and the OMA awards were a

Geoff Selig is proudly carrying on the tradition of his grandfather, Oscar Selig, who started what is now IVE Group in 1921, as he continues to successfully lead Australia’s largest diversified marketing and print communications company. Geoff is recognised for his vision in driving IVE’s strategy and the way he highlights IVE’s value proposition within the industry to both customers and investors, a practice which ensures the company’s strong position is maintained. Geoff believes that the investment and diversification over the last 20 years has been, and continues to be, core to IVE’s ongoing growth and sustainability. The last year for IVE has seen the acquisition of primary web offset competitor Ovato in September 2022 following ACCC approval, and the launch of its e-commerce marketplace Lasoo in

46 ProPrint December 2023

August of last year, amongst other initiatives including the acquisition of Active Display Group and AFI Branding. With revenues of just under $1b for the last year and the highest earnings ever, IVE continues to drive hard to grow and diversify the business further in the ever-evolving communications sector. Currently employing circa 2000 staff, IVE has both doubled in revenue and earnings since listing on the ASX in December 2015, an extraordinary achievement for Geoff and the entire IVE team. 2021 marked 100 years since Geoff’s grandfather started what is now IVE Group. Geoff’s strength as a successful business leader was again on display that year with IVE reporting a $100.2m EBITDA in a pandemic year. As a token of appreciation to staff, IVE gifted every

employee with 500 shares while also buying back 5.4m shares for $7.4m. For Geoff, whose family has been involved in the business for three generations, this marked a real sense of satisfaction. Geoff has also always combined his outstanding career with his philanthropic interests and involvement with the notfor-profit sector – a powerful combination. Geoff was president of the New South Wales Liberal Party from 2005 to 2008. He previously served as a director of the Heart Foundation in New South Wales and is currently on the board of the Pinnacle Foundation, a charity that provides scholarships, mentoring, and support to marginalised LGBTQ youth aged 18 to 26. He also serves on the board of The Lysicrates Foundation, a not-forprofit organisation that supports Australian playwrights.

IN MEMORIAM

A rising star remembered Harry Nicholls was a print apprentice at Velflex, who joined the company after leaving school at the age of 17. He had a close-knit relationship with his family, and a love for camping allowed him to connect with nature. In his leisure time, he also enjoyed the world of video games, indulging in virtual adventures and bonding with friends over shared interests. Harry possessed an exceptional enthusiasm for learning and an innate talent for mastering printing processes and techniques. He embraced every

www.sprinter.com.au

opportunity to enhance his skills and knowledge, immersing himself in the intricacies of the printing industry. His commitment was evident in the quality of his work, earning him the respect of his colleagues and superiors. Tragically, Harry′s life was cut short in the prime of his existence, leaving a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His untimely passing serves as a reminder of the issues around mental health and importance around its discussion, not only in our industry but in wider society.

Though Harry is no longer with us, his impact and memory endure as a testament to the passion and drive he exemplified throughout his life. His remarkable achievements as a young apprentice continue to inspire others, and his vibrant personality will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Harry′s legacy will forever be marked by his unwavering dedication, vibrant spirit, and the lasting effect he left on the printing industry.
